As with the first two books in the series, A Trick for a Treat immediately pulled me back in. A. A. Albright once again delivers a story that’s engaging, magical, and full of charm, making it hard to put the book down. The plot is well-paced and immersive, and I found myself slipping effortlessly back into Wanda’s world.
However, there were two aspects that stood out to me this time—and not always in the best way. First, the new teacher felt extremely unpleasant, even downright off-putting, despite having nothing to do with the murders themselves. Her storyline runs parallel to the main plot, but it added a layer of discomfort that didn’t always feel necessary.
Secondly, the motives behind the murders were heavily rooted in racist themes. While it’s understandable that the author chooses to address such issues—after all, they reflect real-world problems—I felt that these parallels sometimes weighed down the otherwise light, whimsical atmosphere that I’ve come to love in the series.
Even so, the book remains gripping and entertaining, and Albright’s writing continues to shine. The ending especially has me excited for what’s next. Now that Wanda is officially a true Wayfair Witch, I’m really looking forward to seeing how her journey unfolds in Book 4.
