Wayfair Witches #3

A Trick for a Treat

Rate this book
It’s Wanda’s first Halloween at home for years, but that doesn’t mean she gets to enjoy the holiday. A famous werewolf has disappeared, and his girlfriends are getting knocked off one by one. Murder and mayhem might be all in a day’s work for the Wayfair coven, but this time the stakes are higher than ever. This time, Wanda’s own friends are under suspicion.

Wanda needs to discover the real culprit, and she needs to do it fast – otherwise the people she cares about could spend their lives behind bars. Oh, and while she’s at it, she also needs to pass another few of the Minister’s tests. But who ever said that being a witch was easy?

Why does Wanda keep obsessing over Will. Girl he keeps insulting you and your family and literally ratted you out, and you just... keep staring at his butt? Get a fucking grip.

As with the first two books in the series, A Trick for a Treat immediately pulled me back in. A. A. Albright once again delivers a story that’s engaging, magical, and full of charm, making it hard to put the book down. The plot is well-paced and immersive, and I found myself slipping effortlessly back into Wanda’s world.
However, there were two aspects that stood out to me this time—and not always in the best way. First, the new teacher felt extremely unpleasant, even downright off-putting, despite having nothing to do with the murders themselves. Her storyline runs parallel to the main plot, but it added a layer of discomfort that didn’t always feel necessary.
Secondly, the motives behind the murders were heavily rooted in racist themes. While it’s understandable that the author chooses to address such issues—after all, they reflect real-world problems—I felt that these parallels sometimes weighed down the otherwise light, whimsical atmosphere that I’ve come to love in the series.
Even so, the book remains gripping and entertaining, and Albright’s writing continues to shine. The ending especially has me excited for what’s next. Now that Wanda is officially a true Wayfair Witch, I’m really looking forward to seeing how her journey unfolds in Book 4.

Starting to move towards more episodes than stories, something I don't care for.

I don't mind when an author gives you the end, then offers the first chapter of the next book. That feels above board and generous even though the writing may be the same as coming to a sorta end and slapping a cliffhanger on the end.

The ever growing cast of characters really is the highlight of this series. You never quite know who you’re supposed to trust, which just adds to the fun.

This was the most interesting mystery in the series thus far, and having it all mixed together with Wanda’s stress of having to pass her exams was a good blend.

I’m slowly starting to notice a couple of larger ongoing story arcs that are growing slightly from book to book.

It’s becoming apparent that it seems like the end of each book is going to give a hint for what the next book will be about, making them feel like serial stories. Which is something I love.

It is fabulous to read a book and recognise so many of the phrases or words being used. Reading novels set in the UK is a good substitute (at least it is if the writers hail from the UK and use terminology we are all familiar with) but to find a series set in Dublin (though I would love to know which area of Ireland Riddlers Cove is situated in) covering areas I know and using terms that I have known and used for decades, that my daughter uses without thinking about it because she grew up using them, is a pleasure you really can't appreciate until you realise you haven't known it before.
Definitely a book written by someone who lives here, who grew up with the local terminology and not, as so often seems to happen, by someone living elsewhere who merely sets the story in Ireland but who doesn't really know the country or the people, the things they say on a daily basis or the little things we do without even realising or thinking about it.
Very, very, definitely a series I will continue to buy and read.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Great Story Even Starting in the Middle of a Series

I started reading thinking this was another book in a series by the same author that I read earlier this year. I soon figured out it was a different story arc in a familiar universe.

There was enough back references that I was able to quickly get engulfed into the story and its plots. Our protagonist, Wanda, is well on her way to getting back her powers while she dives into a complicated murder mystery.

The character development is well done. It's also nice to see some variation from the expected world of witches. I particularly liked the mango eating bat as a familiar.

Fun read with a nice plot.

You've got a couple of major losers in this book. Jasper is a total jerk and Plimpton is perhaps the worst thuggish teacher ever. She basically sets out to make absolutely sure that Wanda fails her tests, using every trick and cheat she can. You've also got a Gestapo-like group, the 'Peacemakers', that Plimpton wants to put in charge. So, plenty nastiness to dislike.

Wanda shows her strengths in her effort to find the source behind some murders taking place and to keep her friends from being falsely accused by the incompetent Peacemakers. To me it's a clear good vs. evil times two type of story and the ability of the author is what makes the characters to likable or so hateable.

I have to admit that I just had to dnf this book.

I got it as a freebie, and I was drawn to it because I'm in the mood for reading Halloween/Fall stories.
I couldn't get into this story at all. For me, it was too chaotic right out the gate. Maybe it's one of those that you have to read the others first in order to really get into it. It's also possible that someone else may enjoy it a great deal. I think, for me, there were just way too many characters and voices (that didn't feel distinct, even though some of them belonged to people and some to animals) for me to feel like I could follow the story well.

Nothing can beat a woman scorned!

Great! Halloween is coming up fast as are her other tests. However her hopes of taking time to study is thrown into turmoil when a werewolf drops dead. Is the chocolate poisoned? A missing band member, more dead bodies, a killer drug and a system that is actively fighting against justice are all mixed together in another great read. Wonderful characters that are blooming with every subsequent book and a plot that has more twists and blind ends then a maze. Wonderful series and hope another comes out shortly.

At times, the writing was extremely awkward. For instance, "There, on the ground, a lady is lying" It didn't fit the way any of the characters talked. Extremely clumsy phrasing.

Not a fan of authors using their own names for characters, even if it's the first initial and the last name. Left me feeling like the author may be a bit narcissistic.

The story was just too convoluted.

I have no desire to read more by this author.

Loved it!

THIS mystery was much more fascinating, and I cannot believe what the end game was! Wanda's sudden obsession with Gabriel's scent is confounding, as is Will's personality flip-flops. And NOW I'm wondering what is the deal between Gabriel and Will. With a cool treatment of magic, fantastical situations, and continual startling revelations, this series has completely engaged my interest!

Amazing read

This story pulled me in from the beginning with Wanda trying to gain ground on her memories as well as passing classes to become official. When a couple of her closest friends end up in jail she tacks on more responsibility as she tries to help find the real killer before her friends are sentenced.

I enjoyed this fast paced read.
Wanda is being tested to be allowed to investigate for her coven, The Wayfair Witches.
Added to that drama is the disappearance of a well known Werewolf band member.
Suddenly life becomes even more busy as his ex-girlfriends start to be murdered.
Interesting plot, kept me reading.
Good ending, unexpected as well.

Amazing!

This series just keeps getting better and better! Wanda is dealing with school exams and a super tricky murder case. Plus memories. Lots of memories! Which is good, since she really needs them for her exams! In addition to the murders, plural, we have the disappearance of a rock star. Was he taken or did he leave on purpose? Fantastic read!

Mystery number three is just as much fun as the first two. The mystery has plenty of twists and turns and the backstory is developing. I'm definitely looking forward to book four!

Was a pretty good book

Slightly funny, but not historical. I don't know if I'd continue to read the next in line book. For a Halloween book, it was more of a magical book with the different scenes that were happening.

Another great read from a very talented writer

More mayhem and murder abound among these pages. Join Wanda and the Wayfair's trying to solve the mystery with them. It's loads of fun and difficult to stop reading once you start.

Good mystery.

I enjoyed this story. The plot and characters are good. Wanda deals with a murder, corrupt non-witch cops, a hateful teacher, and searches for a missing werewolf. There is humor and surprises. I will be reading the rest of this series.

OK, so, time's up for the Plimptons. Durnit! And I like Max a whole lot more than Will, and not wild about Gabriel Godbody. I mean, really, GODBODY??? I also appreciate Finn. In spite of his heritage and coven (Plimpton)
