Rate this book
Mr. Darcy is ready to propose on the night of his friend's ball at Netherfield. His ardent admiration for Elizabeth Bennet has grown to consume him and he must have her for his wife. However, within moments after his proposal, he is mortified by Miss Elizabeth's refusal. He is on one knee, struggling to comprehend how his glorious night has gone so disastrously wrong, when Mrs. Bennet finds them. Elizabeth cannot budge Mrs. Bennet's insistence that she marry the abominable, proud Mr. Darcy. He has treated her friend Mr. Wickham with such cruelty, her family with repugnance and disdain, and seeks to find fault in Elizabeth at every turn. However, with her mother's decree that she is to be thrown out of Longbourn if she does not marry Mr. Darcy and—worse—the happiness of two of her sisters on the line, Elizabeth decides to give the abominable Mr. Darcy one more chance. Netherfield Proposal is a full-length sweet and clean romance novel exploring the trials and tribulations of Darcy and Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy and his Elizabeth must face misunderstandings, prejudice, and scandal as they seek to find an understanding with one another.

I'm torn. I really do love the premise of Darcy being unable to overcome his crush and just giving in to propose at the Netherfield ball. But I never like the premise of them being forced to be together due to a compromise because . . . come on, Darcy doesn't follow the rules like that. He's rich. He breaks tons of social rules in the original. So, anyway, when that's the thing that drives them together, it kind of pisses me off. This one didn't go too far that direction--after all, it's not like he doesn't want to win her over, and she's willing to entertain the idea also.

Very abrupt ending with no resolutions

I did enjoy the first 80% of this work, but then it appeared as though Campbell Davies realised she had some place else to be, doing something other than giving this book an ending. The quality of the writing also disintegrated quite alarmingly, with many sentences not making any sense at all!

There were way to many things left hanging; important things. First and foremost, what happened to Wickham? We do not find out whether his claims about Georgiana are true or not because we do not get to know what Darcy says to her during their much anticipated (for me anyway) confrontation. He has seemingly locked his young sister in her ivory tower, never to be spoken to again. Except that is, by a still recovering Elizabeth who, after more than 24 hours of being unconscious, decides she just has to go for a walk, and despite blurred vision and a pounding headache, goes to visit her future sister.

Darcy wrote to Colonel Fitzwilliam regarding Wickham and what happened but we never hear anything else about that.

And then we see a still convalescing Lizzy sitting out of doors partaking of a picnic with Darcy (and Bingley for a short while but he has the good sense to return to the house before he freezes to death) in practically sub-zero temperatures! I'm afraid I dislike works that turn Lizzy into little more than a wild animal that cannot stand to be confined indoors for more than five minutes at a time! We know she enjoys walking, but she isn't half wild and she has got a brain that must tell her that as she is only just risen from a sickbed, sitting outside in the freezing wind is not a good idea!

And perhaps the biggest omission of all: when Lizzy is hurt and unconscious and word is sent to Longbourn of what has occurred, Mr Bennet decides that regardless of the fact that his favourite daughter may be at death's door, it is not worth leaving the comfort of his books and his port to attend her! This just boggled my mind.

And there is no wedding, for Darcy and Lizzy. The date for their nuptials came and went because of Lizzy's injury, but I can appreciate that we did not actually get to see them wed; the reader knows it is going to happen. It is information regarding Wickham and Georgiana that the reader is left hanging for!

To say I was shocked when I turned the page (on my iPad) and the review page appeared is an understatement. I thought there had been a malfunction with my iPad, so I went back, but Lo! there was no malfunction. The book just ended with no appreciable ending! There is no 'The End', or 'Finis', or 'and they lived happily ever after' written to indicate the book has come to an end, so that and all the above is why I have taken off a star.

3 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Enjoyable Read

I really enjoyed spending time with Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I found myself thinking of the story throughout the day and could not wait to return to it. The one thing that I would say left me a bit confused would be that we were to accept Georgiana's excuse for her actions (trying not to spoil anything) without the framework for her coming to that place. She had been very little of the story to that point and I feel that the author could have spent some (not much!) time developing this aspect. It might might have added to the length of the book in an agreeable way. Other than that, I found the storyline plausible and enjoyed the work as a whole.

Lovely

I wasn’t sure I would like Darcy being so enamored that he would propose so early, but he and Elizabeth had plenty of angst for their love to seem a reward in the end. Just the way it should. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

I've read worse Pride and Prejudice fan fiction, but I've also read far better.

There were a few anachronisms, which bothered me, like the use of the phrase 'cock up' which wasn't coined until the 1920's, or saying that 'we've called the doctor'... really? Called him what? Because you certainly couldn't have called him on a telephone 80 years before it was invented...

Most of the characters acted a little too far outside of their canon personalities for my liking, too, starting with Mrs Bennet not immediately gloating that Darcy has proposed to her daughter, then to Bingley being judgemental and disapproving, to Georgiana acting like an imbecile.

The main plot also had a massive hole in it. I assumed from the blurb that Darcy would be caught proposing to Elizabeth by Mrs Bennet, who would then make loud exclamations of delight overheard by everyone and so they would be forced to acknowledge an engagement Elizabeth had actually been declining, to spare them both from humiliation and gossip.
However, in the story, Mrs Bennet is against the match at first and is prepared to keep her silence, so all this talk of being compromised because she found him down on one knee proposing makes no sense at all. A man was allowed to offer marriage and be turned down! If everyone who was ever offered marriage was considered compromised then no woman would ever have had a choice in the matter and her 'yes' would not have been needed.
So yeah, major problem with the plot as a whole.

I was happy with Elizabeth learning to love Darcy, which was done in a relatively sweet manner, however there was then a completely unnecessary and melodramatic scene involving Georgiana being completely stupid, Wickham being insane, and Elizabeth being injured so that Darcy could worry about her. None of that advanced the story at all, since Darcy and Elizabeth already loved and understood each other, so what purpose did it serve? It could have been done away with entirely and the story would have been stronger as a result.

Unfortunately, there were too many problems for me to give this a higher rating, but if the author had a good editor to point out the anachronisms, close plot holes, and tighten the ending, it would have been a sweet story.

A forced marriage

A forced marriage story that rises up as one of the most interesting stories of the genre. Darcy is quite the arrogant, proud, overbearing versions of himself. The compromise happened during the Netherfield Ball so he is the awful original him of Austen’s story.

But soon after Charles and the Colonel give him an earful about his personality and Darcy slowly tries move away from descriptions of himself.

Georgiana is an interesting character. She is shy but she still pines for Wickham.it turns out more happed at Ramsgate than had been reported.

There are not many two dimensional characters here. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and anyone is capable of being silly or Nobel or anything in between.

I wish we had a little bit more info about what happens when Darcy here’s about Wickham has despoiled Georgiana. Also some time with Darcys relatives coming to know Lizzy would have been nice.

Refreshing plot. I recommend this book.

I liked Campbell Davies' other book Darcy's Deception: A Pride & Prejudice Variation well enough, so though the reviews here were mixed I decided to give this a try, but I just can't get into it. There is just too many leaps in logic that keep me from settling into the story, the most grievous being how Darcy proposing constitutes a compromise? He was on his knees and holding Lizzy's hand- that's it! I could see Mrs Bennet spreading the news of him proposing, but the worst that would occur from that is Darcy being humiliated at being rejected and maybe Lizzy being considered foolish for not accepting such a lucrative offer. But compromised? I can't credit that.

Anyways I'm 20% in and nothing much besides the above has stood out or happened, so it must be a short story but I can't summon the interest to finish it. I do like the pretty book cover, so there's that.

Absolutely loved this book. It's not too long, but has a good pace, and some bits that made me laugh out loud or be tensely furiously reading to find out what was going to happen. 5*

This book was not bad & I enjoyed it overall until I got to the end, although it didn’t feel like an ending. It’s like the book just stopped. There were so many loose ends that needed to be tied that you kind of scratch your head and search for the last chapter or two thinking you must have somehow overlooked them, but they are nowhere to be found. There were too many unanswered questions & no satisfactory resolution. The book was ruined be a very unsatisfying “ending”

Very good

This is a great book. It’s a very different take on pride and prejudice. The character still have similar journey even though the story is changed. Was a very enjoyable read.

Overall this was a cute story and decently written. I didn't give it 5 stars because the writing was a tad pedestrian and not as thorough as it could have been. There were so many times when I had questions simply because the author didn't fill in the gaps. Elizabeth gets a blow to the head and the physician is called. What's the prognosis? It's not addressed. Is there bruising? No description or imagery is given. This may not seem like much but when the book is littered with events that aren't fully fleshed. So the overall story seemed bland, even though it wasn't. Overall I liked the story so 4 stars it is!

The narration was the only thing that kept me listening. Wonderful narration.

The story, on the other hand, was one of the most boring P&P variations I've come across. The interpretations of these well-known characters were so severe and unforgiving. Charles lacked his playfulness. Lizzy was so demure and weak. Darcy was unceasingly cold, even with the two women who soften him most, Lizzie and Georgiana. It was hard to feel the love between Lizzy and Darcy.

Interesting and intriguing

Low angst, storyline was incredible, the ending was complete, and very expressive. I highly loved how Darcy handles the issues and how Elizabeth handles the information. Clean and respectful, Highly recommended to all to read.

Enjoyable idea but had a number of inconsistencies, anachronistic behaviour and language, and was too rushed.

I found some of Elizabeth’s concerns with Darcy silly.
I listened to the audio and liked the narrator.

What I liked about this version is that Darcy gets a new understanding of Mrs. Bennett. When the compromise is first stated Mr. Darcy looks at Mes. Bennett as conniving, but after talking to Bingley he realizes that while the money will be great for Elizabeth, Mrs Bennett is not happy about the arraignment.

I loved watching Darcy and Elizabeth come to terms with eachother.

Nice quick read.

Well Done!

I enjoyed this story. This is the tale of the unexpected engagement of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. It tells of their ups and downs and misunderstandings and of those individuals who want to break them apart. There are a few grammatical errors but overall it is well written and very interesting. I recommend this book.
