After Caleb discovers he has the rare, Affinity for the Dead, he must do whatever it takes to hide it from a super-secret government agency whose goal is exploitation. Caleb seeks refuge in his new girlfriend, Jade, until he realizes that she needs as much protection from her family, as he does from the government.

DEATH SPEAKS:
Caleb's in high school now and thinks the chaos of last year is behind him. Unfortunately, a serial killer is on the loose and children are his victims. Caleb agrees to help the police apprehend the murderer...until the killer takes notice of Caleb and his paranormal friends.

Carson and Brett remain the bullies they always were and their posse continues to grow. How long can the two groups stay out of each others' way before there's a firestorm of retribution...

I haven't read a book by this author before so I thought I would give it a try. I thought that it was a very good book, one that is easy to get hooked on. The way the first book is written alittle bit rough but it is easy to adjust to the style of the author. I thought that all three books were very well written and all had very captivating storylines that just makes you want to read it, the books don't really work as stand alone it is better to read them in the right order. After I finished these books I did look into other books by Tamara Rose Blodgett, the way she writes keeps your attention on the books and what is happening in them.

First: I read all 6 Books from the series, so my review is actually about the whole series rather than only Parts 1-3, since it is hard to just review only parts. Sorry also for the english, not a native speaker ;)

I like the idea of the future world, that is depicted in the story. Its plausible enough, technical stuff is minimal, just as needed. I like that part. Maybe a little too much "pulse" here, "pulse" there, but still ok.

I had some trouble with the characters, or rather the method of description. For me, a picture of the character is formed in my minds eye pretty soon, but here I had some problems with that. Characters were not described much at first, but some characters will be described in more detail much later, so my mind picture needs major adjusting. In that respect the characters are described comparable to the gradual increasing depth as the technical innovations, but what works really well for the tech does not work so well for the characters. Some get never well explained or have rather unexplainable mood changes - maybe that is intentionally as a teen sees the adults?

The storyline as a whole is pretty suspensefull - not too much, and some developments are quite obvious (like the romantic developments between the teens) - but as a whole nicely done. Sometimes though i got the sense of something not completely thought through or not finished or not polished enough.... its hard to describe, but I try... (i try not to spoiler, so it might read a little cryptic here) e.g. the Showdown of book two was rather abrupt, the suspense here was minimal, the enemies too dull. Some rare scenes are also just plain confusing - character names get mixed up, or it is not clear who is doing what, saying what. Some problems also go away too easy, like some troublesome characters dying along the way... so, some story-elements are solved too cheap.

Being a non-native speaker (and having read in english) I totally love the different language levels that get depicted here. You have the plain adult language, the modern teen language, the near-future chat language, and even the old-style language from 1900s. Especially the dialogs per Pulse-Chat-Messaging are a nice touch - although here the same problem arises as with the characters: you sometimes don't really know for sure who is writing, because you dont know the last names yet, but the messages are signed with initials... but you get the drift, still, also here a little of an "unfinished" feel.

My CONCLUSION:
Although some things have a touch of not finished or polished enough, the story as a whole is still suspensefull, and the general idea is really nice. For me it was nice to read a kind of american youth language, because I just like language to that degree. Also it was nice to get a feel of american morales, e.g. the handling of "PDA" - I was in the US for two years, but that explained a lot in hindsight.

I deducted two stars, because of that unfinished feel and because of some cheap "happy"-endings.

I am so thrilled that I read the Savage series as I would not have thought to read this series had I not. That being said I would have had a better understanding of the characters when they appeared in the Savage series had I already read the Death series. Ahhh the chicken or the egg!

The first book in this series is a bit rough in writing style but as I became accustomed to it I got into the flow. I was eventually able to clearly picture each of the characters and watch them grow physically in my minds eye.

What a great concept this book has covering quite a number of 'what if' issues when it comes to scientific breakthroughs and enhancements and the moral/ethical dilemma attached to each.

I confess that the amount of domestic violence that occurs not only in this series but the Savage series did make me wonder why the author has chosen for this particular aspect to be so prevalent. It certainly raises a lot of questions and has strong emotional depth so I see how it works with the stories but so much of it???

I am enjoying this series so much I have already moved straight on to book four and from halfway through book one have found these stories hard to put down.

Oh, and I absolutely love the way that Book 3 gives us the history of many of the characters. It helps to fill in the characters and give them more depth.

Great series, thanks Tamara

I downloaded these as free box set 1-8, and I was pretty hooked for the first four. The characters were good, the world was right and understandable.
But then it started to fall apart. These people with fantastic powers seem to spend an amount of time standing around arguing about anything instead of getting on with solving the problems. Especialy when it came to handling the "baddies" and assuming that all was right when the reader KNOWs it isn't.
I also felt the violence to the female characters was almost pornographic. Not that I have read any your understand, just a feeling. If the guys want to knock the living s*** out of each other, fine, and if two of the girls want to go at it, fine. But not when a 250 lb guy repeatedly starts batting a 90 lb girl around.
And then from book 5 it seemed as more and more desperate and worsening situations developed with the gang still preferring to argue instead of using their powers to resolve things. Humour is one thing, stupidity of high IQ people is another. If the gang has these fantastic powers, then please write them in. Dont keep stopping the action whilst they all suck their thumbs.
Yes it is a 4 star review, as the story is good. Just the telling of it seemed to fall away, which was a shame
Would I recommend buying? Depends on your taste for gory violence to women.

#1 - Whispers - A good story that gets you involved in the world they live in. Easy to resd, hard to put down. There is bogeyman mentioned throughout the story but when the climax finally happens, it's a liitle disapointing; so many other adventures have occurred that the finale doesn't seem that much more impressive.
#2 - Speaks - The characters have grown a little now and get involved trying to help the police catch a murderer. Again, the action throughout the book is plentiful and flows well. Some things are a little flawed: I don't remember being that stupidly obsessed with my girlfriend in HS nor do the bullies have any real motivation assigned. Overall a good read though.
#3 - Inception - This isn't really a full story. It's more like short stories about the history of three secondary characters from the first two stories told in an interwoven fashion. It's good and adds some depth to the world they live in but this is more like bonus material than a full-on story.

Excellent

Honestly i thoight that this was a children's book qfter reading the firat few chapters of the first book. Of course children are the main character reminding me of STRANGER THINGS but each of these have different abilities up their sleves and the man of the show can pull up an army of Zombies on his side.

I enjoyed it and thanks to Jonnesy for being funny and most of the times clueless, I loved reading every part about him. Clyde has also gotten my attention and I am just wondering what's going to happen to Caleb's closest Zombie. I recommend this to any with patients up their bones because I almost stopped reading half way but decided to finish it and I am glad that I did.

You might too.

An excellent and imaginative story than captures the essence of "teenspeak" as it describes the adventures of Caleb Hart, a corpse manipulator. Taking place in the not too distant future, the story introduces a communication device that works from brain waves and a chemical that enhances innate abilities in the human as they reach puberty. The characters are fun and interesting, and come equipped with a variety of unusual talents and interesting personalities. The series sets the stage for more stories to come, with only one of the three books having an actual ending. If you appreciate teen humor and paranormal stories you will love this book.

I got this set for free, so maybe I expected too much. I honestly didn’t finish because it was, in a word, horrible. Bad writing, bad editing, bad grammar. I’m guessing this was self published. The idea was interesting but it was hard to get past the flaws. Plus, the main character used insulting phrases and played them off like the cool kids used them and only lame parents thought it was wrong. (Ex. ”’tard”, that’s so gay) pretty sure this author voted trump as she discussed healthcare for all in the scariest terms - seriously waiting for her to talk about death camps, but maybe I stopped reading too soon. Wouldn’t hand this to anyone. Sorry author.

#1 Death Whispers
This is written from the point of view of 15 year old Caleb. So the mentality is not in line with the way an adult would react or behave. As a young adult book this was an exciting drama filled story. Just seeing what will happen next is entertaining.

#2 Death Speaks
Book two raises the danger level. The bullies continue their mean streak. And the same writing style you had fun with in the first book continues.

#3 Death Inception
This was a quick story that brings us to the past giving us some history on how some of our main characters got to where they were in the last two books.

I loved the idea of this book. Set in the future with teenagers discovering their supernatural powers, I thought 'this is right up my street'. How wrong I was.

The main character was an annoying brat and the author's style of writing was too conversational and sometimes difficult to follow - don't even get me started on the grammatical errors....

Book 3 was probably the best of the bunch, much more enjoyable and easy to follow, hence the 2 stars instead of one.

P.S. a crushed oesophagus wouldn't be good for you, but it's not going to stop your breathing... that'll be your trachea. 🙄

Would've been a better book if it actually ended

The characters were funny it was a great storyline it was very engaging tale from the very beginning however it doesn't ever have closure there is no ending it just leaves everything hanging in the balance. The reader is left to wonder what happened to these characters that were so skillfully created. This book ended up being a huge disappointment and I would not recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading.

I got a huge kick out of Caleb and his friends. Jonesy really didn't have a filter and he just went full steam ahead. LOL. The first three books in the series is awesome and it does make you wonder what would happen if a simple inoculation unlocked the psychic potential of each child. There's still the good/bad questions, though. And the greater potential of the criminal element. Scary that. I do recommend these books for ALL ages.

A good book with a few errors.

Though I am an adult, I enjoy reading YA novels. This book was very attention grabbing despite feeling written very "young". There were also multiple typos and malformed sentences. Luckily through contextual clues, one could mostly figure out what was intended.

Good read for those who like the paranormal with a twist

Interesting take on paranormal abilities within humankind. Some abilities are recognised in some people today and some for the future. Thought provoking ideas about humanity and it’s fight against the regime. Look forward to the next i this series.

Disappointed Ending

I was so into this story until I came to the end! There are so many unanswered questions. What happens between Parker and Caleb? Why is Clyde different, and why is he so drawn to the police woman. Please tell me there is going to be a follow-on to this part of the story.

Entertaining

Futuristic but not totally out there. Dystopian in a utopian way. Fun and entertaining premise of a possible future. At times the YA lit aspect became tedious with regards the boyfriend/girlfriend scenarios but otherwise good. I was bummed the third book was only a novella but it was a vignette of back stories that actually left me wanting to read the next books.

The Death Series

There was so much I wanted to enjoy in this series. The premise of the abilities and how they could be used but then the body shaming and denigration of some women...

Really good books!!!!

I love box sets. In some ways it just like a long book, but a set is able to be broken up more.
Anyway, don't miss out, get this series. You won't regret it!!!!

Might have been good

Sorry. This was a DNF for me. I can read YA all day and not feel like a rake is dragging over my eyes. The extra commentary after every sentence is completely unnecessary and I wasn't willing to keep reading. Just a no from me after getting to 10%

Not what I expected

I enjoyed the read, great story with interesting characters. but genre of it confused me. It's following a group of paranormal 14yr olds. I enjoyed it enough to continue reading, but feel it could have been made darker if the MC's had been older.

Unnecessary language

The story itself was great, and the writer definitely keeps you guessing but there was unnecessary ableist language and a lot of gross sexism tbh, especially considering these are teen boys and set in a future.

Good Read

Not a big fan of zombie books but I have to say that this series was very interesting. Not the usual zombie shootem up. Different paranormal skills besides raising the dead made this not the typical zombie read but something very different and worth the read.

One of the best stories

The battery on my tablet kept depleting before I was finished reading. I found myself reading eight hours a days because I couldn't put the story down, too much going on! I didn't want to miss anything. Can't wait for more

Great reading

An interesting mix. Teens with powers, adults who don't understand them but want to control them and friendships tested and proved. What more could a reader want?
