A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Lonely Planet, the brand name expert in travel, has covered the earth. Now, apparently they’re experimenting with new ways to package their guidance. Since these are “culture” trails, the emphasis is on art and music.

This once over brought my attention to trips I’d like to try. One is the Ontario Wilderness (to follow the footsteps of 7 prominent Canadian artists) and another the Ethiopian religious sites. There are many others, Glasgow, Mexico City, and Santiago/Valparaiso to name a few.

A lot is lost in the format. I presume that its size is designed to make the book affordable, but it makes for a busy page of cropped pictures. It would be a lot better as a full size coffee table book. The photos are numbered in colors that blend in with the picture (perhaps to be unobtrusive), but you can hardly see them. Since it’s hard to see the picture numbers, here’s a tip; they don’t match the numbers of the site's attractions.

There are no prices (or dollar signs) on the recommended places to eat or stay.

While it’s a nice browsing book, it’s hard to say what niche it fills.

This is another travel guide spin-off from Lonely Planet. Culture Trails presents trips centered on cultural experiences worldwide, from Copenhagen to Taiwan, Budapest to the US. The book creates trips around themes of literature, art, architecture, music, theater, dance, festivals, TV, film, and even comics. 

Each themed trip lists six to eight places to visit. So, for example, the Gothic Tasmania trip in Australia lists seven places:  the Dark Mofo festival, the amusement park Mona, Battery Point, Mt. Wellington, Cascades Female Factory (a historical site where women convicts were once incarcerated), Cascade Brewery, and Port Arthur. Each place has at least one picture accompanying its description. And afterward, there is a very short section listing two places to stay, two places to eat, and two celebrations in the area.

Some of my favorite itineraries are Copenhagen's Design Culture, Finnish Sauna Culture, Art Nouveau Budapest, Naoshima's Art Islands, and Taiwanese Folklore Reimagined.

Even though some countries have more than one themed trip, the book never feels repetitive. Still, Culture Trails is definitely meant as inspiration only, since you can't take these trips based on the info presented here alone. Regardless, it's a fun little book to page through, and I discovered a few places I'd like to visit at some point in the future.

Good ideas to visit quirky places off the typical tourist trails.

Je hoort me al aankomen. Venetië staat helemaal op de voorposten, het was maar een kwestie van tijd voor de roep van La Serenissima me te sterk zou worden.
Dit boek heeft een beetje een aparte opzet. Er zijn 52 plekken op aarde uitgekozen die allemaal 'iets speciaals', om het vaag en algemeen te houden, met cultuur hebben. Een bepaald, specifiek iets. Het kan een persoon zijn, of een culturele stroming. Zoiets dus. Dat zorgt voor een andere kijk dan in een gewone reisgids of 'best of'-reisboeken. Hier krijg je niet alles echt mooi apart: bezienswaardigheden, hotels, eten, nee. Die drie punten vloeien in elkaar over en vormen zo de ruggengraat van het boek. Elke plek wordt ondersteund door zes à acht van die plaatsen. Verder krijg je ook nog een korte, iets algemenere inleiding over de plaats én een paar handige tips. Zoals het moet, en zoals we het van Lonely Planet ook gewend zijn natuurlijk. Kwaliteit.
Het is een boek voor iedereen, en iedereen heeft een andere smaak, dus er zullen allicht een paar dingen in staan die je niet interesseren. Zelf heb ik twee delen overgeslagen, te weten dat van Bob Marley, want ik vind zijn muziek niet om aan te horen, en dat van Gaudí en co., want zijn architectuur vind ik spuuglelijk. De Sagrada Família is wat mij betreft de afschuwelijkste kerk ter wereld.
Eerst vreesde ik er even voor, want het begint met Australië (de stukken staan alfabetisch per land) en de eerste twee interesseerden mij redelijk weinig. Bovendien kwam het ook nogal zweverig over. Dat lijkt een beetje aan de auteurs te liggen, want sommige delen hebben dat veel minder dan andere. Gelukkig beterde het snel. Het valt te verwachten dat er een paar typische plaatsen hun opwachting maken (naast Venetië): Parijs, Londen, L.A., Budapest. Maar dan is het nog niet gezegd dat je ook verwacht wáár het juist over gaat. Je komt nog eens voor verrassingen te staan hier!
Bovendien zitten er ook gewoon plaatsen in die je niet helemaal zou verwachten of waar je niet meteen aan zou denken. Strips in Brussel, art nouveau in Glasgow, oude overblijfselen in Ethiopië, Bollywood in Mumbai. Ik was ook nog aangenaam verrast door Tokyo, met anime en manga. Tof! En helemaal op het einde komt de VS, met vijf hoofdstukken... Twee daarvan gaan over film & tv, twee over muziek en één over boeken. Ik had verwacht dat daar wel iets van zou tussen zitten, maar niet zoveel! Ook weer een aangename verrassing.
En dat alles overgoten met en omringd door knappe foto's, zoals gewoonlijk!

Top of the places to visit , stay and dine at - I wish that I could afford this style of travel - interesting and historic places along with out of the way adventures to be experienced also. Also one needs time to finish the places to see within each spot. Time and money !!! But still fun to read about adventures in traveling.
