This book by Daniel Brand is an interesting tale about the notorious John Gotti and how he came from nothing to being one of the most successful heads of the Mafia.
The book tells about how Gotti’s family was very poor, but from an early age he started down a rough road to make money by murdering and stealing from others. Along the way, he lets fame get to his head, which leads him to always wanting to be in the spotlight and have the finest of clothing which eventually helps to lead to his downfall.
Brand writes with an interesting writing style that will have you quickly flipping through the pages to learn more about this Mafia boss. It’s a great biography that is both easy and fun to read. The book is only 99 pages, so it’s not that long of a read. If you’re searching for a short yet interesting book to try, definitely consider this one.

False flags is an interesting and realistic depiction of turmoil and unrest in the Middle East. Its use of mass hysteria and paranoia is apt, and fits in well with a modern-day climate. The best thing about the book is that it instantly forces you to question what you know, or what you think you know. This forces the main conflict to be in between the reader and the reality around them, which is clearly intriguing.
This is specifically why the elements of cliché when it comes to the characters is forgivable. The characters service the message of the book more than they service the plot and so they don’t have to be fully dimensioned, “real life” characters. However, that being said, the book is still trying to tell a story. While it has an abundance of substance, style is still a very important element that is unfortunately sometimes missing.
The dialogue is written well and believable, but the characters themselves come across as caricatures. While this certainly can be done well and could have been employed more deeply in order to really service the plot, James Henry seems to slightly err on the side of caution when it comes to his characters. It’s not that they were bad, they were interesting and exciting to read about, but they could have done with a lot more nuance.
In this case, the book plays out like a blockbuster movie. The overarching conflict is important and so is the message, but it’s not a character study. While this has a lot of benefits, such as establishing and emphasising the message and the events within the book, it does feel like something is slightly missing. It’s the fact that it’s not the equivalent length of a blockbuster movie. Usually, the big movies don’t have time to explore characters intrinsically, but it simply feels like this aspect has been ignored.
That being said, I did thoroughly enjoy the book and it did make me think and question my own reality, while also questioning how realistic or fantastic the book was.

The story of an American gangster

This is the history of the Dapper Don himself John Gotti and his rise to the top from nothing. John was a poor labors son who longed for the good life and found a way to reach out and take the opportunity to build a legacy that outshines most other mobsters of the era. There were no bridges that John would not cross or burn to get the fame and respect he desired. The author has put together a great view into the life and times that drove the choices of America's development. I enjoy reading about that era and the life of the people and how things happened. This is a great story of the development of that time. The history of American culture is a great resource and Daniel Brand has done a great job of putting together this story about one of the most prolific players in the early mafia game. If you are interested in the life of a gangster this is a great place to start. I would recommend everyone check this one out.

Gotti: John Gotti American Mafia Boss by David Brand is the second book I had read by this author. I'll be honest I had never heard of John Gotti, so perhaps was a little at a loss to start with.

The author has written a well researched short book on the life of John Gotti, an infamous Mafia boss from the USA. Brand gives the reader the information on how John came from a low class family that existed on day labourers salary. Gotti turned his poverty stricken childhood around and ended up with an estimated $15 million a year during his prime. However these mega bucks wasn't earned by hard work like his parents but by robbing, cheating and committing murder. He was known for carrying out the first unauthorised mafia boss hit in more than 30 years.

I am well aware of the American Mafia but John Grotti, 'Teflon Dan' I had no knowledge of. I found this extremely interesting. Although short, it was informative and I enjoyed it great job once again Daniel Brand.

If you’re looking to learn a lot about this iconic man, then this is a good place to start. The author has put in a lot of research that helps the audience gain a better understanding of the man and his history. I was surprised by the information in this book as I didn’t know a lot about the man’s past. It was interesting gaining a better foundation that helped me understand his mind and why he did the things he did. I could tell the author put in a lot of work on the research element of this book, which I feel is the most important aspect of such a book. However, I think the book would be better received if the author delivered a more personal literary voice and worked on eliminating some of the grammatical issues found throughout the book. Otherwise, I enjoyed the read and would recommend to anyone looking to broaden their knowledge on the mobster.

John Gotti, the man, the legend, is deified on the streets, everyone bow and tell tales about him, very few know the truth, he was just a mere low-class person just like you and I, but as he begin to make his way up, then his name you will not forget.
There are many ways to live the American dream, but this one was arguably the best and worst way possible, having just binge watch recently Breaking Bad I could find some similarities, but you can deny how stylish and dangerous this Gotti is, and for the type of book and story, the writing is amazing, I could lose myself analyzing the dialogues for hours and it’s so well accomplish you just have to sit down and disconnect to the world to enjoy this gem. A must buy for everyone who are intrigued about how the Mafia Underworld really works and who stood against them.

A very in-depth and well-written account about the life of John Gotti, his rise to power, his mistakes and how he ultimately changed the entire way the American Mafia is run.

I find it incredibly interesting how these criminal organizations are run, carrying out public activities while still remaining so private and secretive.

Gotti was a big part of the end of this secrecy and is the reason why we know so much about the mafia now.

In the first sitting I ended up reading over half the entire book, it’s that un-put-down-able.

Bravo to the author, they’ve produced a solid, thorough account of this mans life in a very accessible and easy to read way.
