In a world where the law is eat or be eaten, Takita is no stranger to. However, an incredible feat happens in this installment that forces her to look at life a little differently. The dichotomy between Mika and Takita grows. As brother and sister or two growing lovers. Not sure at this point.
The Quin Zaza has a new experience, a very rare one that occurs every few years.
In a way, volume 3 accentuates Takitas development on a solo level. There isn’t much of the crew in this book.
Regardless, the panels are beautiful as always and there is something to be said for this type of art.

The logic is so weird. It's like "you're a cute baby dragon who took care of me and thinks of me as a mum so I'm going to save you and get you back to your herd, but the next time we meet I'm going to hunt you and eat you so make sure you're not eaten until then" WHAT CARNIVOROUS NONSENSE. Poor baby dragon probably doesn't understand English and said bye to her in the cutest way possible too. 😭😭😭

So fun! This book is all Takita and I love it as she’s my favourite. This volume is so much more focused than the previous two and the art was stunning... one of the best ongoing manga right now!

The author kicks up the drama by tossing everyone's favorite chatty greenhorn overboard during a fascinating yet difficult struggle with a herd of young dragons. The Quin Zaza encounters a rare sight in the skies and contrives a plan of action to make the most of this curious new opportunity. A herd of young dragons? Easy, right?

No, nothing about draking is particularly easy. In DRIFTING DRAGONS #3, Takita is ripped from the deck of the ship while in a tussle with a smallish dragon. The ship's crew, dumbstruck and angry, spend the next several days scraping the walls of a jagged canyon, searching for their lost comrade. The whole crew fears the worst; Vannabelle is quieter than normal, Mika takes to making grim jokes, and Gibbs grows increasingly protective of those crewmembers who would consider pushing themselves to the limit in their search for the missing cohort.

And yet, on the ground, Takita encounters something rather fascinating.

Thus far, this manga's highlights are less the skyfaring adventures than the worldbuilding and cultures the characters encounter in-between the dangers aloft. In the previous volume, the town of Quon served as a delightful and convivial means of exposing the cast's emotional proclivities and pride in their work ethic. In DRIFTING DRAGONS #3, Takita encounters a village, snugly built at the base of an active volcano (Mount Kin), and learns a great deal about the people and their history through their kindness and ingenuity. Of note, an outspoken hunter-class character, Ascella, is the reader's window into this culture. And it's clear the author enjoys (to some extent) using characters' social and ethnic diversity as a means to finagle newer (and more profound) humanistic insights from the central cast.

The art, again, is remarkable. The effort required to provide gradient detail for stone ovens, the precision needed for the heavy inking to backlight a treacherous struggle in an low-laying cavern, the instinct to rely on texture as the driving visual element across a sequence of skewed panels that mirror a character's fall from the heavens -- DRIFTING DRAGONS #3 is strong, visually, in ways that only become apparent upon very close observation. This volume is fun and engaging as a fantasy tale, but its visual character is as good as it gets.

I think I would give this volume a three point five. I still quite enjoy it, and I liked that this time the story seemed to be moving away from the dragon recipes a little bit. I love the creative dragon designs. I like that the story is playing with the complex feelings and morality of hunting animals, since this time one of the main characters is actually saved by one of the dragons.

However, a few plot points felt poorly executed or just disturbing. Takita falls from the airship to the ground below, but survives--and her survival is poorly explained. I like that a baby dragon then goes on to protect her, and she develops a fondness for the little creature and a determination to feed it and return it to the herd. However, to feed the creature, she cooks mayonnaise from the baby's MOTHER (if I understood correctly) and feeds it to the baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then, when she releases the baby into the wild, she tells the baby to grow up strong and she will come again to hunt it (and by implication kill it and eat it, even though it has saved her life several times by this point). It just felt wrong and really messed up. Meanwhile, another character, Mika, just wants to kill every dragon he sees and eat them--including the baby. Ugh.

The fact that the story comes from Japan, where controversial whaling continues, also sort of lends the manga a sheen of ugliness.

But the art is really amazing and the characters felt like they were getting more and more fleshed out. I really enjoyed reading it. But those dark spots really bothered me.

In this review, I want to highlight some different things.

Dragons as Sea Animals in the Sky?
As we have seen so far, dragons in this book are not in the typical "dragon" design of either Western, Eastern, or even Central American in origin. They are not even of the movie/TV show How to Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) variety. They look and behave more like sea animals. In this book we are introduce to a species of dragon that looks like jellyfish/octopus. We also seem them migrate together. In this book, we also learn what makes them fly, which reminds me of the swim/air bladder in fish.

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli
If anyone has stumbled upon my reviews for this series then you would have noticed that I keep comparing this series to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films. This comparison still holds in this volume. This time has more to do with the dialogue the look and feel of the book. The feel and look is still there, but the lines in English remind me of the English Dub of some Studio Ghibli films. For example, Takita says this to a new character on page 167 "Thank you for everything! I...I'll never forget you!" Yes, this is probably in non-Studio Ghibli films, but I think I first heard it in those films.

Mika
Mika's my favorite! I like his lines, his look, and his facial expressions. I love his expressions on page 5, 31, 162, 167, 168. I will wax more on my love for Mika in volume 5.

Verdict: I am fan of this series, but it really likes to leaving you hanging for the next volume.

A tad more on the cutesy side then the previous volumes, this one mostly focuses on Takita and, as the cover depicts, a dragon she meets after an incident. This volume focused more on the life styles of dragons at large, but does have a splash of character development for our green horn draker.
I'm hoping that the manga shifts perspectives for a while and does something with the interpersonal relationships of the crew members. Though Takita and Mika spend a great deal of time together, forming a sort of brother-sister duo, only Vannabelle and Giruad have dropped hints about their pasts.
I"m moving swiftly into the next volume, and I'm looking forward to following this story until it's very end.

Drifting Dragons Review

5/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

I found another new favorite manga series completely by accident. How? I stumbled across volume five for a dollar at a thrift shop and immediately fell in love with this series the moment I started it. I’m currently waiting on volume 14 to stop being checked out from the library so I can continue the series, but I think whoever’s reading this series is taking their time working through it very slowly. Noooooo…

In this story we follow a team of drakers who live on an airship and hunt dragons for food. Dragons in this world are giant eldritch monsters that occasionally attack cities at random. So it’s not like they’re out there hunting down cute lil dragons for sport. Although not all dragons will eventually become aggressive and attack people, they all have the potential to do so.

Despite my efforts to explain to you all why it’s sometimes ok to kill these “dragons,” I know that some of you might still not be cool with that, and that’s fine. If you feel that you wouldn’t be able to read a series in which these creatures are killed for food, then go ahead and walk away from this one. This is a major issue that people sometimes have when they start this series, and I wouldn’t want any of you to be uncomfortable with that.

Although, if you are planning on sticking around with this series, you’ll very quickly find that not only do readers sometimes take issue with that, but so do people in this world as well. There are a lot of people living in this world who hate drakers because they don’t think dragons should be hunted for food when farm animals exist. What they keep forgetting is that a cow isn’t going to burn a city to the ground just because it felt like being angry today.

Be prepared for these sorts of ethical discussions, because they’re all over this series. I’ve been thinking of Drifting Dragons as a more serious, skyfaring version of Delicious in Dungeon in my head, but since I haven’t read Delicious in Dungeon yet, I have no idea if that’s an accurate assumption or not. Look at me, finding more series to add to my tbr when my tbr is already way too big as it is…

Overall, the main plot events are related to taking down big dragons and meeting other people who interact with dragons in different ways. For example, they meet one ship and its crew that study dragons scientifically, and another ship that hunts dragons for the fun of it. Everyone has different ideas about how dragons should be treated, and those opinions often conflict with each other.

As the story goes on, you learn more about the backstories of some of the main characters, which is always very interesting. It usually comes up when they’re hunting a particular dragon, so you get both the cool dragon stuff alongside an emotionally gripping chunk of character development. I’ve never seen a story that pairs plot and character development in this exact way, so it’s really nice to get something that feels new and fresh.

At the end of some of the chapters, there are recipes for cooking different dragon dishes, and occasionally other dishes that don’t involve dragon meat or dragon eggs. I think these recipes would pretty easily translate to other real world foods if you substitute out dragon meat for chicken or pork or whatever meat you prefer. I’m interested in actually trying some of these recipes, because they all look so delicious.

I was able to find a few of them on the wiki after returning the manga to the library, but not all of them. Maybe I’ll check the manga out again and send the missing ones to whoever manages the Drifting Dragons wiki. Some of my favorites that I really wanted to try aren’t on the wiki. It looks like they mostly only have the ones from the first couple of volumes, but must have given up after a while. Not a manga giving me homework…

If you couldn’t tell by the fact that I’ve just been rambling on about random parts of this manga, I loved it so much. This series gives me so much to think about that I could just go on for days if you all let me. The dragons have such strange designs, the food looks delicious, the characters are really fun to learn about, and all the themes are so fascinating. I’m currently waiting on volumes 14-16 to get returned to the library so I can get caught up, and they can’t come back soon enough.

Also, a couple years ago, Netflix started an anime adaptation of Drifting Dragons, which I’m really sad won’t be continuing. It used a lot of 3D animation to capture the huge ships and dragons, which at first I thought I wouldn’t like, but I eventually grew to be ok with. I don’t feel like every single dragon I saw was as perfectly close to their manga designs as I would have liked, but the ones we see a lot of are pretty accurate, so that’s good. I’m not sure why nobody watched this series and why it was canceled. Maybe the manga wasn’t very far in translation yet? Idk. I’m just really sad about it.

If you’d be cool with reading a series about hunting and eating dragons, especially if you liked Dungeon Meshi, I’d love to know what you think of this one. I get the feeling that I’d probably like Dungeon Meshi based on how much I loved Drifting Dragons, so maybe I’ll get around to that one at some point. Don’t worry about trying to convince me to read Dungeon Meshi, I’ve already got it on my list. I will eventually get to it at some point. Just maybe not right now. I need to finish getting caught up with this one first.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

I got the first few volumes of Drifting Dragons in a bundle sale and had no idea what to expect. It's quickly become one of my favorite manga series.

The story here is a bit more heartfelt than the previous two and I continue to be drawn into the visual and cultural world building. I think part of my fondness is that I'm consantly being reminded of my feeling reading through Nausica for the first time.

The art remains breathtaking. Not just the obvious things like the dragons and the action, but the characters, the food, the landscape, it all puts a smile on my face.

More dragons, more great artwork, a tighter storyline, and a special character focus on Takita. She carried the narrative weight well, and also inspired me that some authors do still know how to write a female character well--brave, compassionate, and a quick-learner, yet also reckless, inexperienced, and naive, her strengths and weaknesses are balanced well. It was fun to watch her grow. So far, this series is getting better by the volume. Above everything else, it's just plain fun. I look forward to reading Vol 4!

This is a series that you have to devote time to because it starts getting good on volume 2 when the characters and world are finally developed and then it just takes off with volume 3.
The relationships between the characters, their reasons for being dragon hunters, their relationships with the dragons, and just the overall world really get flushed out here and it builds up to a really entertaining read that's told through great, detailed art.

This is the last volume that the anime adapts. (As of March 2022) I really enjoy this series. It was great to read through what I knew was going to happen, I even realized some cool things that I didn’t before! This series is relaxing to read, I love the adventure and the problems the crew face! I can’t wait to continue reading this series!

Didn’t expect us to get a bit deep with the baby dragon, Takita coming to a crossroads with the little guy was interesting, also we see how big the world is with the village we find ourselves in. They didn’t even have dragons, I will say though she did kill it a bit by saying she’d kill the baby in the future.

Takita SHINES in this volume! It’s such a treat to see everyday ship life through the eyes of a newbie- each panel is crafted to feel natural and real! I loved seeing a new cast of characters and their culture, as well as new creatures and dragons! I’m always amazed at Kuwabara’s world building! I love Vannie’s concern in this volume, too.

This volume was a little different as we start to see a little more sympathy for the Dragons. It's still basically the same with plenty of recipes and eating going on along with the dragon hunting. It's a very different series as I've said before.

Very cute story line with a jellyfish looking baby dragon, that culminates in a HTTYD 1 kind of moment. Which seeing the dragons as part of an ecosystem is neat. Fewer recipes in this book, but left off on a good cliffhanger.

Such an amazing story and the characters just pull me right in. As volume three continues the tale of the crew, we discover what happens with one bad choice. The series is definitely giving me more of a Miyazaki-esque illustrations and plot.

I'm getting to where I enjoy this series, but probably not enough to remember to go find more somewhere.
