In Dream So Dark we pick back up right where we left off. Which means right away we're are throne back into this world of dreams, foster care, guardian angels, and good vs evil. I appreciate that the story didn't draw out in the beginning, especially since her fans have been waiting for it for what feels like forever (but than again a week can feel like a year in the book world). So many things are happening to these characters, so many trials they are each facing. It is beautiful in all its sorrow.
Dair, aka Sandman, aka hot, all consuming, alpha male. In this book we see his struggle to balance all his responsibilities. His need to be with Serenity, to also keep her safe and protected, is becoming a hard feat. It doesn't help that he is also trying to protect little Emma and do what he was created to do, while also searching for answers. His frustration and desperation has the potential to lead him down a path that he should never walk.
"She was everything to him. She was the smile on his lips, the joy in his heart, the sun on his face, and the light in his darkness."
Serenity, our very caring, giving, kind-hearted heroine. She is recovering from a gun shot wound received by protecting Emma at the end of book one. But, saving Emma has caused her to catch the eye of a...lets just say, not someone you want to be on their radar. She is fighting her own battle, and for once Dair is powerless to help her.
"Not you!" he snapped. "You are the one person on this planet that should never have bad dreams. You are mated to the Sandman. If I can't protect your dreams, what good am I?"
And Emma, precious, genius, strong, little Emma. This little strong willed eight-year old was a game changer in this book. Her story, her struggle, her journey, has been so heart breaking. But, though she experience what most wouldn't experience in a life time, she does it with such faith and courage that it was so hard for me to comprehend her strength of character. Another thing I loved about her were the little phrases that her mama would say. These little moments add more character to her already extraordinarily wise personality.
"My mama used to say that life is what we make of it, not what our circumstances make of us."
"That is one thing you will never have to worry about, little one. I will be here for as long as you need me. If you should fall, I will not let you hit the bottom. If you should stumble, I will steady you. I will show you the love that the Creator has for you."
This book was a very emotional read. It had pains, hardships, and transgression. I cried so hard while reading this book. I felt for these character (one in particular). There is this one scene (you will know when you read it) that had my heart breaking with such sorrow. But that what good writing is. It's when you are sucked up in the storyline, experiencing and empathizing with every affliction being had. Even though this book had some puffy eye moments, there was more to it. Dream So Dark also illustrated that there can be peace found through the pain, that there is help in the hardships, and that there is always justice found on our behalf.
I love all of Quinn Loftis's books and I am so glad I volunteered to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
