Rate this book
Profound - In Depth - Taijiquan Theory

In the last seven centuries, many songs and poems have been composed about Taijiquan. These have played a major role in preserving the knowledge and wisdom of the masters, although in many cases, the identity of the authors and the dates of origin have been lost.

For the last twenty years, Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming has translated many of these documents and according to him, he believes numerous are incomplete for reasons relating forgotten oral secrets, authors personal understandings narrowly focused and many documents are missing.

Taijiquan Theory of Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is an attempt to join together the various theories on Taijiquan in one complete text. "Based upon my personal background and understanding, I have tried my best to compile the Taijiquan Theory and practice concepts in this book. I have attempted to make this effort as complete as possible".

This book is structured with songs and poems, followed by the original Chinese text and any interpretation of the passage. All of the songs and poems have been written by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming.

This is my forth book by Dr. Yang Jwing-ming and overall his books are great. His books go further than an ordinary martial arts book because of the scholarly work put into them. I always feel like a student when I read and I always learn something. Mostly I like how his books are written for anyone wanting to learn more about martial arts: the academic knowledge poured into these books is of the highest quality yet the language is clear.

Like other works by Dr. Yang, he started off with a General Concepts chapter that gives an in-depth history of Tajiquan, Yin-Yang theory, posture theory, qi and its movement system, and muscle/tendon changing and marrow/brain washing. The following chapters gave a great overview of taiji concepts including regulating the body and stationary/moving postures, regulating the emotional mind, regulating qi, push hands exercises, and sparring. Like his other books, the exercises and picture examples in the book are great as they demonstrate hand movements, footwork, and the exercises are supplemental to the books information.

I thought this work was superb and Dr. Yang Jwing-ming did a phenomenal job. I would recommend any of his publications to anyone interested in martial artsas a whole. Thanks!

This is the most amazing book about Taiji philosophy and tai chi as a martial art, that Ive ever read. I became a student of Dr Yang after finding one of his books, and love all of his work. But this book is special. 500 years from now, this book could be found and would serve as a document preserving the depth of taiji for future generations. it is so much more than you expect, with lessons that transcend just practicing Tai Chi forms. Highly recommend. Search Jwing-Ming Yang for more.
