Insatiable lust for power and control runs thick in my veins. My father served as President of the United States of America—and his father before him. Montgomerys are born to lead and rule, to fear nothing and cower to no one, to make allegiances, not friends.
But I digress.
With a senate campaign about to launch and presidential aspirations at fever-pitch intensity, imagine my dismay when my strategist tells me I need to “settle down” with a “nice girl” in order to appeal to my constituents. Enter Rowan Aldridge, a head-turning stunner with a charm school walk, Jackie O. refinement, and a well-connected family.
She’s perfect.
So I’ll do what I have to do, make her believe what I need her to believe, and as soon as the campaign’s over and I’ve secured my senatorial seat, I’ll release my pretty little butterfly back into the wild.
But this isn’t about all of that.
This is what happens when a villain falls in love.
AUTHOR'S NOTE 1: This book is SUPER LIGHT on politics. Like ... extremely. All characters and parties are 100% fictitious and not based on anything you currently see on TV or read in the news. Promise!
AUTHOR'S NOTE 2: Dark Promises is a full-length standalone romance and a spin-off of Dark Paradise. You do NOT need to read Dark Paradise first. However, for a limited time, I've included Dark Paradise + Bachelor, books in which the hero of this book has showcased his delicious villainy. :-) All books are full-length standalones. Rest assured that if Dark Promises ends around 30%, it is still a full-length novel.
Who doesn’t love a great political romantic drama? I know that ever since the introduction of the show, Scandal, I’ve been intrigued with this particular trope. I’ve read quite a few novels in the genre and I’ll admit that not all of them have worked for me. Some were entirely too bogged down with political rhetoric, which diluted the romantic angle and caused the plot to get a bit sidetracked. But with Dark Promises, Winter Renshaw gave me a story that was not only centered around the romance of its characters, but it was funny, sexy and enchanting.
Keir was a charmer that didn’t even try to be charming. He was incredibly handsome, powerful, arrogant, and had a heart as cold as ice. He himself admitted to hurting people with absolutely no regard to their feelings. It just didn’t bother him. He didn’t care. He was also the youngest son to the President of the United States. As a renowned playboy, he earned a reputation of a manwhore who had no intention of EVER settling down. But now that he wants to run for the open senate seat, he’s got to project the proper image - repair his reputation and find the perfect someone to have on his arm. That’s where Rowan comes in. She’s perfect. She’s also a bit of political royalty, as her parents were the largest donors to Keir’s father’s campaign. But she’s in no rush to get into a relationship. As a matter of fact, she’s recently been dumped and isn’t interested in another politician, even a by-product of one. This story is about two people and how a ‘fake’ relationship can turn into real love.
These characters were very easy to like. They were hilarious, even when they probably weren’t trying to be. Although Keir could come across as unfeeling and uncaring, the author gave more than one glimpse into his sweet heart, one even he seemed to be unaware of. I loved the passion between Keir and Rowan, their symmetry, and the evolution of their relationship. I did expect more for them as an ending, but I enjoyed the heck out of their journey.
Release Date: October 24, 2017 Genre: Contemporary Romance POV: Dual - 1st person Heat: 3.5 out of 5 Type: Standalone
Dark Promises tells a story about an aspiring senatorial candidate, Kier Montgomery, that needs to refine his man-whore personality to a caring gentleman worthy of his constituents votes. He needs someone like Rowan Aldridge, whose sweet personality and family influences will certainly give him the advantage to further his political career.
But it's not easy to woo a woman who just got her heartbroken. Kier worked double time to get to Rowan's good side and proved to her that he's a changed man. But still, Rowan is not impressed. Just when Kier, is about to give up something change and Rowan suddenly calling him and initiating to somewhat want to start a relationship.
What's the real reason behind Rowan change of heart? Will Kier be able to stay a "good man" for the sake of politics?
Winter Renshaw just wrote another engaging story the will keep you entertained until you flip the last page.A real page-turner! Though this is a book 2 of the Dark series it can read as standalone. If you haven't read a book written by this author this one can be a good start. Highly recommended!
I wished I knew this was the second book in the series! Gah I should have done my homework. I don’t usually mind when I go out of order, but I feel like I found out a lot of what happens in the first book, oh well.
When I got this book Kindle said it would take me 9 hours, I was like what? Then I soon realized there’s three books in this purchase, so yay!
Dark Promises was exactly what I needed. I wanted something light, political and not to angsty. This is a personal opinion, but I hate steamy covers with light steam! I dunno what’s the trend with covers these days, but I feel like steamy covers should be for erotica books and tame covers should be for NA books, but that’s just me and I’ll get off my soap box now.
This is my first Winter Renshaw book and I really like the writing style. It’s causal, yet witty and I found this storyline different. I liked where everything was going and I read it in one sitting because I was just enamored with the storyline.
What I liked about this book was the fact both the Heroine and Hero didn’t want a relationship, BUT the both wanted to pursue each other. I liked that. I don’t usually go for the no-strings attached relationship, but I really liked how they didn’t, but did liked each other.
I also liked that both the hero and the heroine were chasing each other, but kept each other at a distance. It’s hard to explain, but I liked the storyline.
If you are into something light, witty and easy to read, I highly recommend this.
What happens when your strategic plans change and suddenly your emotions are evolved?
Well, you gonna get your answer when you read this story, cause everything begins according to a plan...
Keir has a plan in order his campaign to be successful... Rowan has also a plan to forget the pain that overpowers her heart for one night... Well, things are about to get more complicated!
It was a very enjoyable story and I really liked the pair of our main characters I mean you have a cocky playboy and a woman that seems the perfect good girl and serious but in reality is a rebel who enjoys the "adventure". If you ask me this is quite challenging, they seem totally different but page after page you can certainly see they are very much alike and they have the perfect chemistry.
The plot was developing steadily and it was quite fascinating seeing Keir and Rowan evolving as characters throughout the process. In addition, the story contains some really funny dialogues and of course some really hot, steamy scenes!
I definitely recommend it and I'm looking forward to reading more from the author!!
ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review!
## Deplorable. That's how I would describe this "hero". He completely ruined this story for me. I surely don't understand all the good reviews. I don't mind the politics because it's very very light in this story. I don't mind that the hero is using the heroine to get ahead (great trope). But the characters have to have some redeeming qualities. He had none. His fiancé broke up with him because she found him in bed with 2 other women. Bleh. Once a cheater, always a cheater. He lies through his teeth about everything. He is so over the top arrogant, it's ridiculous. At the beginning, he thinks the heroine is boring, lame, and not worth his trouble. He's upset because he has to turn down the blonde with the double D's. And then we're supposed to believe that all of a sudden he falls for the lame heroine? No, just no.
“My Mama always said there are two kinds of men you never want to fall in love with. Car salesmen because they’re professional liars. And politicians because they rarely make a promise they can keep.”
Characters Keir (30, has political ambitions): The following words/phrases were used to describe Keir: womanizer, playboy, liar, confident, determined, arrogant, man-whore
Something to know about Keir: - Wants to be President of the United States someday and he will do whatever needs to be done to get him on that path
A quote about Keir: “When I don’t like something, I run toward it. I try and change it, change what I don’t like about it. Prove people wrong.”
Rowan (26, degree in non-profit management): The following words/phrases were used to describe Rowan: has a smart mouth, Little Miss Perfect, confident, smart, savvy, beautiful, kind, effervescent
Something to know about Rowan: - She loves to be naked while doing laundry
A quote about Rowan: “During the week, I’m a buttoned-up, philanthropic good girl, and once upon a time I was a buttoned-up, philanthropic good girl. Now she’s just a role I play, an outfit I wear, a skin I step into and remove the second no one’s looking.”
The Story: Keir wants to run for office, but his tarnished reputation stands in the way of public support. His political strategist said the best way to repair his reputation is to...”find a nice girl, organize some photo opportunities, and publicize the hell out of a good, old-fashioned whirlwind romance.”.......Enter Rowan. After being dumped by her boyfriend, all Rowan wants is a good time to forget about her broken heart. “All I need is one night of meaningless sex with DC’s most eligible bachelor.”......Enter Keir.
Both want something from each other, but both are unwilling to be honest about what they want. Let the games begin
My Thoughts: The following are my thoughts about this book: - It had been a long time since I read book 1, so I forgot what Keir was like. It didn't take me long to remember that he was an asshole and I didn't like him. - Their games reminded me of the movie How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. I like how the reader was in the loop but both of them were clueless to the games that were being played. - I enjoyed Keir’s slow realization of his changing feelings and desires. It took him a bit to accept the reality, but once he did he was all in. - The chapters were pretty short, so the story felt like it moved along at a good clip. No boring sections and I didn’t skip pages. - A few typo/grammar issues that were just a little bit distracting - Keir’s big gesture......awesome 👍👍
Overall: - Do you need to read previous books in series?: No. there are references to the couple from the previous book (Keir’s brother) but you don’t need to read book 1 to understand this story. - POV: dual POV - H likable? he became more likable as the story progressed - h likable? Yes - h virgin? No - First time they kiss: 33% - First time they sleep together: 34% - steamy? Yes, in some spots - OW/OM drama? there’s an ex boyfriend that causes a little drama - H/h cheat? No - Did I skip pages? No - Big secrets? yes. Both are hiding the reasons for why they are spending time with each other. The reader has full insight to the secrets. - Did I cry? No - Did I laugh? Not really - Cliffhanger? no - Epilogue? yes. 5 years later - Recommend? maybe. It’s a pretty quick read, but there’s not a ton of depth. Nothing overly special about the book, but I enjoyed my time spent with Keir and Rowan.
Quotes “I know enough about Keir to know he isn’t a lover, not in the literal sense of the word. He isn’t a serial monogamist. He isn’t a relationship guy or the kind who brings flowers and takes his sweetheart on a picnic date. He’s the guy you screw when you’re trying to get over the one who broke your heart.”
“I’d rather be the person someone needs than the person someone’s never heard of.”
“This woman sees through me like cellophane, and that makes her the first on record.”
“I can promise you, even if I were fucking comatose, I could still fuck you better than anyone else.”
“I think deep down, beneath the expensive suits and the perfectly styled hair and the shiny shoes … there’s a man who wants to do good things, who has a good heart.”
When I first read Dark Romance I hated, with a capital H, Keir Montgomery! Unlike his older brother he was a complete manwhore with no regard for anyone.
Cut to Dark Promises and surprise, surprise, as the youngest son of the President of America he is STILL a complete manwhoring playboy with little to no regard for anyone. The only hitch in his lifestyle is he's decided to run for office in a senatorial campaign and his image needs a major overhaul if he's got a chance to win and restore the family name. Keir is ambitious as hell and is willing to do whatever needs to be done.
Enter Rowan Aldridge, the daughter of his father's biggest campaign contributors from the 'perfect' family. Keir's political consultant has done research and deemed her as THE WOMAN for him to have on his arm and be in a relationship with. Keir is willing to do whatever it takes to win her over so his fake relationship brings in the votes. The only hitch is that Rowan just got her heart smattered by another Washington insider and has sworn off relationships. So what ensues is a game of cat and mouse, except the mouse has a little lion in her making Keir have to up his game and put in effort in a way he has never been the slightest bit interested in doing so before.
The dance between these two is often funny in knowing that they're both playing the other, neither believing in it being an authentic dating relationship. But the deeper they get into trying to outdo each other, the closer they become without realizing it. I started this book hating Keir from the last one but I ended up loving watching him change. Yep, Keir won me over. It's cool when the worst guy in the world for a particular girl ends up being the best guy she could end up with.
These two made a kick ass couple and the journey was so much fun to go on. Winter wrote a book more ensconced in this book then the first and it was an even better read. Who doesn't love watching a selfish, gorgeous manwhore turn into a beautiful dream of tall, dark and handsome who loves unconditionally?? 4.5 Stars all the way!
Dark Promises is the follow-up to Dark Paradise by Winter Renshaw. Rowan has been terribly hurt by a man who she thought loved her as much as she loved him but really never did and broke her into tiny pieces when he dumped her . Now all she wants is a one night stand with DC's most eligible bachelor as a form of revenge against her ex-boyfriend. Keir, a son of the current president of the US, needs a woman with an immaculate reputation to try and repair his damaged one in order to run for his own political career or he won’t have a chance at all. His strategist has plans for him and that plan is to "make him" a changed man , even though Keir really isn’t. He still couldn’t care less what people think of him or his choices but in order to make things work for once, he has to listen to what his yes men tell him and the woman they choose for him is Rowan. Rowen is dealing with her recent heart break and decides to go to a bar for a one night stand so she thinks that her luck has changed because of who just happened to sit next to her, a man who is god’s gift to women just sits right by her out of the blue but what Rowen doesn’t realize it isn’t just a happenstance meeting. Keir has set things up to get a fake relationship started while Rowen is just looking for a good time, and nothing long term. Both have their own agenda going but the more time they spend around each other, the more they let their guard down, and the more time that their real feelings become obvious. Will this blow up in their face or will their love end up saving them both? This story is filled with a lot of steamy, passionate scenes, scenes that you will need a fan to cool you off. There is also a few scenes you will need a tissue for. Rowan and Keir have a lot of chemistry together, which was evident from their first meeting. The wit and humor is also evident whenever they interacted. The angst wasn’t that much in this story but when it did come forward, it was definitely a hard pill to swallow. I loved seeing past characters Camille & Ronan make an appearance. There is most definitely a villain to this story and I had wished to see that person get their comeuppance but really didn’t get to find out what happen to them so if there is more books in this world, maybe we will. I loved this book and find anything Ms. Renshaw writes is an instant hit. She is an auto buy for me and I look forward to her next romance book.
My Rating: 4.8 stars ***** "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***
The minute I read the blurb to Dark Promises I knew that I needed to read it. I absolutely love the idea of villains and anti-heroes in stories finding the one girl to bring them to their knees. That is exactly what we saw here. Keir and Rowan were fantastic. Their chemistry was insane and the banter just as fantastic. I could not get enough of this sexy political story!
When Keir Montgomery set his sights on the Senate, he needs the perfect woman to bring it all together for him. A modern day Jackie-O to his Kennedy. Her name: Rowan Aldridge. But what happens when appearances are deceiving and the script is flipped on him and everything he plans goes up in smoke? This is the story of a villain falling in love, but is he able to keep the girl in the end?
I thought this story was great. I loved how Rowan was a gamechanger for Keir and the way she twisted him up inside when he least expected it. While I did think this story was a little rushed, I enjoyed this author's "voice" so much and loved that the characters were so sarcastic and witty. This is my first Winter Renshaw novel, but I know it won't be my last. I look forward to reading more from her in the future. 4 stars! ~Ratula
I enjoyed Rowan and Keir's story so much that I am now re-reading Dark Paradise (# 1).
It was amusing when Rowan tried to discourage Keir's pursuit by pretending to be a clingy, over the top girlfriend. Little did she know that Keir was being dishonest as well!
I really enjoyed Dark Promises I've read a few books by Winter Renshaw that are really good and I haven't read Dark paradise witch is about the heroes brother the couple are mentioned and make a appearance but this can be read as a standalone . We have a playboy hero and a heroine that a well hidden rebel the story line flowed well and the romance wasn't rushed at first these two were using one another but it quickly formed into something else . Rowen is dealing with a recent heart break and decides to go to a bar for a one night stand so she thinks that her luck has changed because a man who is known to be a player happens to sit right next to her . I was ok with Keir but once he realizes that he's falling for the heroine and selfless things he does he becomes swoon worthy . Thought it was real funny that Rowan pretty much does How to lose a guy in 10 days thing witch is really hilarious to see the heroes reaction . This sex scenes are steamy and when they both talked and had alot more things in common then they thought . Their were some things I didn't really like it felt that there were some things that needed mentioning and the end felt a bit rushed we really didn't get a clear ending just heroine saying what was going to happen . copy provided for honest review **************************************** hero=8 heroine=9 secondary characters=9 Chemistry=9 steam=9 romance= 7 humor= 3 darkness level=2 action=3 mystery= 3 enjoyment=8 angst=3 story line=8 Story ending=7 character development=10 pacing=10 cover=10 stars= 4 author=10 would I recommend this book=yes would I re read this book=yes would I read future books by this author= yes
What a tagline! The villain gets the girl-style romance. It's an intriguing premise that leaves one wanting. It's even called Dark Promises so oooo this is going to be good. Rarely is there a politician MMC who does dark, bad things in a dark romance. If anything, Keir is an entitled jerk, yes. He's selfish, yes. But he isn't irredeemable. He isn't doing actual dark things. He's your standard manipulative rich guy willing to lie for his goal. The first 50% of the book breezes by. It's interesting seeing a dude totally fake the funk. For a smidgen of time, Rowan is a little annoying, but it's more like a character annoying. It's a character quirk, but she also ups the ante by becoming a great pretender. So you have two privileged people deciding to fake the funk and pretend to be into one another, and readers get to watch them slowly fall in love unbeknownst to them. The major issue is that the book is marketed to feel like it's going to be dark and that we will get a villain, and truthfully, we don't. All we have is a regular contemporary romance with a not so great guy who decides to turn it all around. The story moves at a good clip. Rowan gets called out for her crap just as much as Keir and of course there is the fairy tale ending. All just so sweet in it's way and not really dark promise romance.
So the ending "This is what happens when villains fall in love", but after reading, the only question swimming in my mind is "is it?" though with full head tilt. It left a little bit to be desired.
It’s all fun and games until someone loses something
I received an Advance Reader Copy for Dark Promises (Dark, Book #2) written by Winter Renshaw and voluntarily reviewed this book. What does the rich & famous youngest son of an ex-US-president Keir Montgomery do when he is told to clean up his act before he announces his senate campaign and presidential aspirations? He listens to his advisor, who tells him that a certain Miss Rowan Aldridge would be just the person he needs in his life - immediately. Only Keir doesn’t realize that she will fit the bill in more ways than one, although he CAN recognize the wild child in her that she is pushing to let loose…
All her life, Rowan has been groomed as the oldest of five children exactly how to be perfect. In fact, her parents are famous for penning many sought-after volumes on just how to raise the ideal children and family. Except that society has no inkling that Rowan and her siblings have been living a lie their whole lives. Rowan is dying to kick off her boxed-in and stifled personality, customized to fit her parents’ measure, and have a wild night for herself where she can express her real inner self. But first, she needs someone in particular…
This is a very engaging story of politics having a play in the very real lives of two people who are ultimately meant for each other, if only they could stop playing games with each other. Looking forward to reading Dark Paradise as well ;-D
Keir and Rowan are more alike than they realise. Both out for a good time with no strings attached, until Keir needs to clean up his act in order to garner support for his political goals. According to his team, Rowan is just the woman to help him achieve his ambitions but he has no idea what he's let himself in for.
I love the way, through dual POV, we are able to see into the minds of these characters. So fun seeing their confusion when neither of them acts in the way the other expects. Keir really is quite a selfish and unlikeable person in the beginning and I chuckled thinking of him gritting his teeth and pulling his hair in frustration when things didn't go his way.
I admire Rowan, a strong minded woman who, after a previous betrayal, has sworn off relationships. She knows exactly what she wants and is determined to stick to her guns. I love the way that she is in charge in this story, despite Keir trying to steer the proverbial ship his way. However, the chemistry between these two is hot and eventually emotions begin to take the place of resolve.
Low on angst and the deep political stuff, this book wasn't at all what I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The push and pull between the characters, each giving as good as they got, was wonderfully written and the ending was perfect. A great contemporary romance I can definitely recommend.
Keir Montgomery, son of the President, political aspirations and a playboy. He needs to clean up his act to get ready for his announcement as a candidate. He is gorgeous and smooth talking.
Rowan, daughter of a wealthy politically connected family, wants nothing to do with it. Just out of a relationship that broke her heart with a politician. Another one is the last thing on her mind. She just wants a bit of fun to help mend her broken heart.
Keir and Rowan are delightful together. The alternating POV's is most entertaining as they plot and scheme against each other.
I did not read the first book in this series but it took nothing away from this one. The characters are strong and well developed and I enjoyed them very much.
I recommend this book for all romance readers. Winter is a clever storyteller and I guarantee you will enjoy.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another 5 star review for Winter Renshaw and 5 reasons why:
1 - Rowan- loved her. This author really knows how to create a strong and likeable MC. Winter's MCs are always so badass. Love it.
2 - Kier - hot, sexy, cocky and arrogant. I love that he was portrayed as almost irredeemable at the start but then the redemption arc was great. That part did feel a tiny bit rushed though so ie from the point he realises he's in love he kinda just drops everything. It would have been more realistic if he had still continued to struggle with love vs obligations/ career.
3 - Sexy scenes were just the right mix of sexy and romantic.
4 - Loved seeing Camille and Roman again! This was a nice surprise.
5 - Great connection between the two main characters. The relationship was entirely believable and had depth.
Rowan Aldridge has just had her heart broken and all she wants from Keir Montgomery is what he's famous for, an unforgettable one night stand. But Keir needs a steady girlfriend if he wants to be seen as a worthy candidate to run for Senate, as his womanizing ways won't endear him to the voters. And Rowan's perfect for the job. The tables are well and truly turned as Keir pursues Rowan in this fun and sexy romance. There are some delightful scenes between these two in this very worthy **5 star** read. Dark Promises is certainly not what I was expecting it to be, Winter Renshaw has delivered a gem of a story that's a joy and an absolute must read! I received an advanced reader copy.
What happens when a villain falls in love? You get a sassy steamy story that warms the cockles of your heart, that's what.
We first met Keir in Dark Paradise-a spoiled brat of a Presidential offspring who was a loose cannon of hedonistic selfish and toxic masculinity. To see him meet his match was a thing of beauty.
I enjoyed every minute of this story. This one exceeds its predecessor for me.
Received an Advanced Readers Copy for my voluntary review for Hidden Gems.. We have two people who get together under their own agenda, not willing to fall in love . But as time goes in, and Keira sees Rowanndifferently, he tries to win her heart and eventualky he does and they fall in love.. good love story.. You need to read.
The characters in this book didn't resonate with me as much as the first, Dark Paradise. Perhaps I already disliked Keir, and it would have taken a lot more effort to sway me. The book is still enjoyable and very well written.
I voluntarily read an arc of this book for a fair and honest review. That old saying about the best way to get over a man is to get under another one? That’s exactly what Rown Aldridge plans on doing after Hunter breaks her heart. And Rowan already has the new man picked out...Keir Montgomery, youngest son of POTUS ( thank God this is fiction because Donald, Jr or Eric would cause me to vomit in my mouth). Keir is a playboy, a one night stand kind of guy, which should be perfect because that’s all Rowan is looking for but he has an agenda. Keir is hoping to make a senate run and he needs the stability of being paired with someone like Rowan Aldridge...just until his election. Both in truth want the same thing but it’s complicated. Once Keir realizes that it was his rival Hunter who broke Rowan’s heart, he redoubles his efforts to get her into bed. It is then he realizes that he and Rowan are the same people. I should also mention here that Dark Paradise, featured Keir. Dark Paradise was the story of Keri’s brother Ronan and escort Camille. Keir now is confident that Rowan will be calling him by the end of the week. The sex was too good for her not to want more. But that’s not what happens. Okay future reader, enough spoilers, this is a MUST READ. Read this and you’ll want to add all of this author’s books to your library. I know I want to.
An intense, consuming and enthralling love story that'll own you from the get go...
I'm so excited about this book that I actually have a poop eating grin on my face and my heart is hammering in my chest. Seriously, I'm finding myself doing my idiot clap as I type every other word. Let's just say that I may be on cloud nine with my thoughts of Keir Montgomery and Rowan Aldridge. I'm so chuffed with this book that I'm contemplating when it'll be ok for me to re-read it. Winter Renshaw what have you done to me? I have had this lady on my TBR for ages. AGES I tell you, and I still hadn't managed to get to her when Dark Promises came up for review. This was such an opportune situation because it gave me the "in" I needed to get into her... and get into her I did. I am so obsessed with her writing. This really was the best introduction to this author I could've had.
Firstly I want to give the heads up that although Dark Promises is a standalone, it is part of the Dark duet. You don't need to have necessarily read book #1, Dark Paradise, in order to enjoy this book. However, I wish I had. Not because there are any spoilers on Ronan and Camille's story, but just because I'm a bit weird like that. Basically, you can jump right into this duet from either of the books. What I will say is be prepared to lose yourself to these books consecutively because once you've finished one you will need to read the other as though your life depends on it. Okey dokey. So, I went into this book expecting a dark romance of sorts, however that is not what this is. I can't say whether or not book #1 has a more dark element to it (because I've literally just finished this book and Dark Paradise is waiting for me on my kindle), but from the blurb it does seem like it has definitely more of a taboo feel to it. Either way I was unable to put Dark Promises down. I read it cover to cover in one sitting and I could not read it any faster, believe me I tried!
I have to admit that although this story wasn't exactly what I was expecting it to be, it is exactly what it needs to be. If that makes sense? I was expecting dark and taboo, and I got cunning and devious with a sweet and tender twist... oh, and a whole lot of delicious, scorching heat. I liked that it didn't take long for the story to open up and draw me in. I'm not saying that this is an insta-love kind of romance, however the slow burn of it isn't dragged out and tedious. There's that exciting element of the chase and will they won't they, and even as the story develops and Keir and Rowan build on their connection it's never really just straight forward. This definitely gave the plot a thrill that had me turning those pages so quick my fingers struggled to keep up with my eyes. I particularly liked that both Keir and Rowan had their own agendas that were intricately woven with their backstories, yet it wasn't difficult to keep up with the plot. That's one of the things that I absolutely adored— although the plot isn't two dimensional and there are a variety of factors that play out throughout this story it never becomes a read where you have to be on the ball 100% of the time so that you don't miss anything. This is where Ms. Renshaw's writing got me. She took what could have been a rather difficult to keep up with plot and she made it an easy read that kept it's sophistication and complexity. For me this was a true testament to her writing skill and the reason that I cannot wait to lose myself to her other books and characters.
When it came down to the cast of this story I found myself completely and utterly enthralled. The secondary characters were brilliant and a real part of the story without ever taking the spotlight away from the leading characters. I adored Hannah (Rowan's sister), she had the perfect balance of wild child, sophistication, no fracks given and tenderness. Not to mention that that girl is feisty as hell. Seriously, she was my favourite supporting character in this book and I would've loved to have had even more of her in it. In many ways she is the mediator and instigator all in one. Her relationship with Rowan and their interactions really allow the reader to see a soft and nurturing side to the heroine. I mean Rowan already has that likability about her, however in many ways she's also the carbon copy of Keir. A lot of their traits are similar with very few exceptions, and although Keir starts off as the villain there are times where she takes the whole game to another level. This is probably where I completely fell in love with Rowan's character. I loved that although she was insightful and had this caring and nurturing side, that she also played the game. She is beguiling and cunning in some ways she's conniving (not in the bad sense), but she also has vulnerabilities that Keir helps her embrace and own. Where she cares too much, he cares too little and it's in that way that they balance each other out. I have to say that I can see her being one of those heroines that I will never forget. But you know, a lot of the affection that I harbour for her stems from the way that Keir portrays her. Sure she's brilliant on her own, but when this callous and unfeeling man is brought o his knees by her, wow, it changes her game. Keir is this selfentitled and arrogant playboy that takes what he wants without a care or regard of the consequences and as the plot progresses you see a him mature into a hero that you can't imagine not ever loving. I have to admit that I absolutely loved him from beginning to end, even if the feeling intensified as the story went on. More importantly I loved that they both crave the same things, and it's those needs that bring them together and allow them to see each other differently to what they appear. Their romance has such a beautiful and organic ebb and flow—even if they try to resist it and stunt its growth.
I could really keep going on and on and on about Dark Promises and these characters. However, I just don't think there is any way that I can coherently compute just how much I loved this book. This isn't some in-depth and true to life political thriller. It's a beautiful and intense love story that takes place within a political hothouse setting. If like me you loved Katy Evans' White House series you will fall head over heels in love with Dark Promises. It is nothing short of stunning, swoony and scorching. It is everything, and I can only hope that we get more from it. I would love to see more of Hannah. She deserves a book of her own. Hell, I'd even like to see more of hunter, even if I still pity him. I just cannot bear the thought of not having more.
SYNOPSIS: Rowan has been burned by a politician who she thought loved her and all she wants now is a one night stand with DC's most eligible bachelor to get back at him. Kier doesn't care whether you like him or not, he just cares of himself and acts for his own benefit, but his strategist has other plans for him; he needs to "make him" a changed man. So Kier plays along and Rowan is the girl they picked for that. Neither one of them wants to fall in love, they're both playing for their own benefit...but something happens along the way.
REVIEW: You kind of know the plot from the beginning and of course you imagine what can happen, but I couldn't stop reading and I was rooting for the couple from the start. I loved Kier's character as well Rowan, both of them are strong willed, come from a "picture perfect" family but never really felt their love, they want to be their own person and both of them are trying to be with each other for their own selfish reasons. I loved the part where they weren't in love and I loved the part where they fell in love; you want things to work out for them. It was a very entertaining and romantic and sexy book and the only thing that I didn't like is that it had to end.
I adore political romance, ever since I read my first one, this is one genre I cannot get enough of and while this particular trope has been done time and time again, it never gets old for me. Politician wants fake wife to project wholesome image, win votes, win senate. Seems easy as pie, however, even the most unsavoury of characters can still win...current president included. However, as with all these tropes, the fake turns into the real and to keep it original the author has to put their own spin on it.
I really enjoyed Keir and Rowan's story. Keir was the son of the President and was the resident manwhore. Keir had no intentions of settling down and was quite happy sowing his wild oats to the detriment of his fathers image. However, when a senate seat comes up, Keir wants to win it and so begins a turnabout. Rowan has just been burned by a politician and the thought of falling in love with another is the last thing on her mind. But the heart wants who the heart wants, even if it is unexpected.
This was a perfectly balanced read with just the right amount of politics interspersed with humour, love and hot, hot sex. Loved it!!
“I’m tired of being the villain,” he says. “It’s all I’ve ever been. I don’t want to be him anymore. I want to be a man worthy of a woman like you.”
Rowan’s long-term boyfriend, Hunter, has just dumped her so he can focus on his Senate campaign. Heartbroken and looking to forget Hunter for just a night, she stakes out one of Keir Montgomery’s favorite bars. Her plan works, only Keir won’t sleep with her. No, he wants a long-term commitment and Rowan just isn’t buying it. Good thing she doesn’t, because Keir definitely isn’t being honest.
The drama grips you from the first page and just keeps going. I couldn’t stop reading. Rowan was an amazing heroine. She stayed smart and played the game perfectly. The things she did to try to scare Keir away were endearingly funny. I really can’t think of a single thing I didn’t like about Rowan. However, I hated- I mean, really hated- Keir in Dark Paradise, so I was hesitant that I’d be able to like him. Damn if he didn’t woo my by the end, though.
The only reason I can’t give 5 stars is because the epilogue felt rushed and incomplete. I only got Rowan’s point of view of some very important things and wasn’t shown Keir’s take which was disappointing. The rest is so good, though. Definitely worth a read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
