"When you travel, you don't fear the unknown. You become a part of it.You don't meet a million people. You meet yourself, in million forms." She had once said.I had fallen for a gypsy heart. We were complete opposites. She was a secret traveller, I was a dreamer. She was filled with experiences, I was filled with stories.Though we lived across the street, we spoke to each other after 14 long years of awkward silence. Everything had changed. She was a well kept secret. Everything about her was a missing piece of beautiful puzzle she had turned into. But the Universe had other things to offer before I could bring all the pieces together. After all that only one question remained, WHERE IS RHEA?
Madhusudhan wrote his first novel on love when he was 21, because he realized writing about love is easier than actually finding it. His hobbies have changed from time to time but watching people behave remained his favorite.
He has written short film, ad films and along the side has also completed his bachelor's degree in Aeronautical engineering. He is currently working as a design engineer in a well known Aerospace firm. If he is not writing, you can find him watching Sitcoms, or wondering if penguins have knees.
“Sooner or later, like a boomerang, everything makes it way back to us. Everything is redirected towards its origin, every action rewarded; one by one or all at once”
Journey Across the Street is a story of love and friendship with an element of suspense in it. Two people, Goutham and Rhea, become friends as children, only to stop speaking to each other eventually over a tussle and then reconciling after 14 years.
Their personalities are stark opposites but they bond well despite their differences. Rhea has a mysterious nature and a troubled life whereas Goutham is a fairly simple guy with a normal life.
This book made me go through a myriad of emotions throughout the story. There were carefree moments of fun which one experiences while being with college friends with their ongoing banter, there was a wave of nostalgia that overwhelmed me while reading a very simple yet effective description of Goutham’s childhood, the feeling of elation that accompanies love, all along with an air of nail-biting anticipation.
The story is simple yet gripping. It unfolds various stages of one’s life in a subtle manner. There is no usual drama, there is no love at first sight. It is all about how one discovers oneself in the process called life. As you read through, you begin to cherish good old memories that have gone past in your life. The intricacies of every relationship shared by the author with every character is beautifully written. It's a simple tale that will leave a lasting impression in your memory. Kudos to the author for this stupendous attempt.
The story revolves around a college student Goutham and his love interest Rhea. The first few chapters felt like a campus based love story but the story soon progresses and the genre changes to thriller.
We’ve read a lot about how opposites attract , the same case is with Goutham and Rhea. Rhea is a free bird who finds solace in travelling , in order to leave her problems behind. Goutham on the other hand , is a sophisticated and and focused person. But cupid plays its game.
After 14 years of awkward silence , the finally interact and a love story pops but suddenly Rhea disappears or is she missing?
The writing is lucid with a few typo errors which can be ignored. The authors are described well and you can connect with them.
Journey Across The Street can be your next quick read.
Just about an ok read for me. The first part of the book was strikingly similar to Paper Towns; I couldn't help but draw comparisons. Once the story does unfold, it is a light read. There is no mind-blowing twist. The end was predictable as there weren't too many characters to create a big whodunnit anyway. Even in its predictability, the 'big' reveal was not very convincing. No big ulterior motive/back-story surfaced towards the end, even though attempt was made to do so.
I personally loathed some parts of the book, I will add them later when I have the book in front of me. Like most Indian authors I have read this year, this one also is in dire need of editing.
Can skip, can read. Not a big miss if you choose the former.
“It was fun, the childhood. Everything was new and most of the things seemed cool because most of the things that we did, we were probably doing it for the first time. We did not have the past to dwell upon or a thought about the future to be anxious about. All that we had was our present, which in itself was a beautiful present. It was the time when ‘Apple’ was just a fruit and not our short term goal. It was the time when a wooden chip shaped like a gun was the coolest thing to possess among our friends. ‘Look what I found.’ “
Book is mixture of suspense, romance and thriller in overall. Story starts with Short story competition in Gautham’s college and continues with his victory. Even after fourteen years he still miss his childhood friend, Rhea who lives across his street, they stopped talking years ago. He has group of four friends who had been very close to him.
One night suddenly Rhea appears in his balcony to ask for a screw driver and then their meetings became regular. Those balcony meetings turned to road trips and then finally led to love.
Rhea was like collection of stories and Gautham wanted to read them all. Different people in their college had different views regarding her as several people had seen her in different cities doing different jobs. He was curious to know every secret and every part of her life. They were immensely in love with each other in fact Rhea left her habit of travelling for him but one day something happened which changed their lives when Rhea got kidnapped. Her kidnapping brought them more closer to each other.

My Review
Author has framed the story in simple and beautiful manner. There were certain scentence which were amazing and were at the heights of creativity. Story describes college life in exact manner. Group of friends, in which we usually have a couple, a notorious friend and a silent person. Also problem with placements. I was able to co-relate this with my own college life. “One would say that I deserve more than the share I received for the amount of thought and time I had invested in it, but unfortunately, I could not find the one who could say that. I would not ask for it either because it was not ‘morally-right’. Ugh! Who makes these rules?” I loved these lines and was able feel Gautham’s pain here . Honestly, i am in love with Rhea’s character. Her bravery and kindness won my heart. She was mystery from the beginning till the end. The way she had her unique perception toward life and people. She fought with every situation and had explanation to every question. I am amazed with the way author plotted Rhea’s kidnapping which was planned exactly according to Gautham’s script for his short story competition. I loved the way story cusped with Rhea’s phenomenal proposal to Gautham, also am planning to steal those lines if I ever needed in future
The fabulous part was the story terminated the way it started. Even after fourteen years of break Gautham and Rhea felt same for each other. They were together in the beginning and were still together in the last.
I received a pdf copy of this book from thebookplanetpr for honest review.
The Ideality behind every character enhanced the Book. Specially,RHEA where she is lives across the street. The one who wants to be in others shoes for a whilst at least, not bothering whoever it is. Furthermore, she has wander lust. “She was carefree; a bird that belonged .......................................................................” . The way she has been through other’s life would leave the readers think who would never been through. You would shrill for deekshith, for his insults towards Anupama, back & forth. But she is the one who always seem to be busted. Though the author would have left sarcasm to the readers end rather mentioning it in few places. Typical Family scenes do happen in this book like in all our families. But author made it seem so cool, by choosing to write about them rather than ignoring during Rhea’s absence (‘WHERE IS RHEA?’) You can identify yourself with Goutham (a corporate individual) “When I am old, I do not want a few papers stapled .............................................................” “Lined up files.................. ........................... Unheard screams ........................... modern slavery” *Full marks for these three lines* And further you would like the way he loves rhea, the way he bothered about rhea until he offers a screw driver and she gives him a Taser later. The act of love carried out between RHEA AND GOUTHAM is of very best kind. Even if she is crazy where he seems normal, that pleases the reader. The way, the dialogues and the situations, the author has carried out given a boost to the book. Reader would never have a clue that the one who would only weave letters together would give the life philosophical paragraphs.(NISSAR) Somewhere the journey seem to drop from its top gear, until THE short film concept twinkles in Goutham’s mind. The book picks up its pace thereafter and will only propel you to finish the book in one go with nail biting anticipation all along. Author has upheld the story by keeping climax unique.
'Journey Across The Street' by Madhusudhan R. is a romantic story with a touch of thrill in the plot. The story is beautifully narrated and the turn of events are totally unexpected. This leaves the reader hooked to the book.
Goutham and Rhea are the protagonists. The story tells us how their childhood friendship develops into romantic attraction, after not communicating due to a scuffle, for almost fourteen long years. The story is narrated from Goutham's point of view. The way the author has portrayed the chemistry between the protagonists is commendable. Goutham is a happy-go-lucky guy whose passion is to write plots and make short films. He seems creative. He has a group which includes his college friends. The camaraderie they share is enjoyable and leaves a smile on the reader's face. Rhea's character in the beginning seems dark and mysterious. But as the story unfolds, we see her true character, and how strong it is. The story has twists which cannot be predicted during the course of the story.
The characters are all very well developed and the way each of them contributes to the plot is amazing. The narrative is short, easy, fast-paced and crisp; and the language is lucid. The plot is very gripping, and has emotional and philosophical angles in it too, besides the romantic setting and thriller elements.
The book is definitely recommended for anyone who loves beautiful romantic stories with a hint of thrill in them.
Journey Across the Street comes across as a sappy Rom-Com in the first few pages and gets you hooked with the intrigue of an extremely well layered character of Rhea and then the chemistry between the two protagonists. The book is a tribute to all the fun times of college and the innocence of love in our childhood to complications that arise with maturity of adulthood.
Journey Across The Street follows the most popular POINT-OF-VIEW narrative with Goutham Jain as the narrator, but make no mistake the protagonist of the book is Rhea Patel. The story entirely revolves around her and the character is wonderfully developed and layers of her character uncovered through every chapter will only make you fall in love with her. The narrative is crisp and leaves you wanting for more.
The author in his very first book itself has learnt the technique of grasping the audience's attention from the onset. The way he has tapped into the psyche of the group of youngsters who want to travel and their motivation behind it is praiseworthy.
The only criticism of the book is the underdevelopment of its secondary characters.
All in all, a book that I loved reading and would love to read again.
This book was suggested to me by the author himself to write a review. I casually started reading thinking it as a teenage love story. But, his mature writing and thought process and the way the story proceeds made me hook to this book even in my vacation.
The pace of the book is amazing. I loved Rhea's character, though we hardly find anyone like that in real life. I love the way she see life is. I think we all should appreciate the small things we have in life. When I read that Rhea travels for longer durations, I had a doubt about how safe are those travels for girls in present day scenarios and the author has beautifully answered all the questions.
Gautham and Rhea are childhood friends who live across the same street. They stop talking to each other after a tiff and they take 14 long years to bond again. They begin to understand each other better, though as individuals they are two opposite poles.Their friendship slowly evolves into love. And then the suspense factor jumps in to keep you guessing till you finish the book.
An ordinary engg guy Gautham meets an extra ordinary girl Rhea who is also his childhood friend. They fall in love. But every action has a reaction, as the author says, and that's when the story changes from a beautiful love story into a suspense thriller which brings us on our toes. A poetic saga.. I loved reading it till the end. A new writer has born!!

When I started reading this book I thought I would be going through some old school romantic story but as the story progressed it suddenly took a turn and it became a thriller. I must say that the plot twist by the author is extremely well defined and gives the reader no clue about the change of genre. It was a slow start but as the story progressed the suspense in the book built up and it became a fast read.
Goutham and Rhea are polar opposites and both of them have very unique characteristics. Like, Goutham is extremely focused and sorted out about his life and is a no nonsense guy; on the other hand Rhea is absorbed in her own problems and to sort out her problems she seeks solace in travelling and being wild and free. When these people come together they complete each other. The way Goutham falls for Rhea bit by bit, the way he acknowledges his feels and regards her presence in life gave me a queasy.
Apart from a few typos the narration of the author is descriptive and well written. The author's characters have depth in them, and some strong and distinct opinions that puts them apart. Here I would like to point out that some of the opinions or characteristics of the protagonists were not justifiable enough. Like, Goutham, our male protagonist has some strong stereotypical feelings regarding girls in general. I could not figure out why.
Journey Across The Street is a romance novel with a suspenseful twist and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Innocence in bonding between hearts friend or love or well wishes is well described....A running IT life ,Passion about the dreams And yes twists in the story are well executed..... One cud relate his/herlife to the story and ofcourse the college days are the best days :)
As a 90 kid I love this book. It reminds me of my childhood days. I love the characters esp Rhea Patel. It keeps you engaged until you finished the book. Every person have a own story.it show the deep emotional of a individuals whether it’s a sad ,witty humorous, happy, love. It’s a mixed of all emotions. Good book.
I received this book as a Giveaway. Initially, it appears that the plot is same as other love stories. Boy trying to understand girl and some suspense associated with her. However, the author has beautifully laid out the story and Rhea's character is very strong and impressive. Beautiful story
The leads of the story Rhea and Goutham Are well portrayed . The way the author is taking the story will never bore the readers it is not a usual melodrama . And the childhood story took me back to the days those games... was nostalgic and the author made me miss those days....And damn that travelling part was the BEST and my FAVOURITE part..... the fact that when we lose ourself we find the new us is neatly said....many things in the story are rightly said !! And the shift from what had happened and what is happening makes the story even more interesting... Ending was perfect the most unexpected... was magnificent....... Its a Literary Treat....❤
The story starts with Goutham expressing his present state and how life has been different and unpredictable with this girl coming back in it. A final year college student, Goutham and four of his friends: Avinash, Anupama, Deekshith, and Kruthika, were into making short films and advertisements. Deekshith and Goutham also had a talent for writing. Their den was Anwar chacha's chat centre, where they spent most of their afternoons eating, chatting and planning for future films. They had a friendly connection with Anwar chacha too. All of them had things they wanted so badly and things they wouldn't wanna let go off. As the story unfolds from here, Goutham has a character from the past visit him one night, asking for a screwdriver. She was his childhood friend Rhea, whom he was never introduced to formally, who he proposed to with a pollen back in the day, with whom he would spend his days playing games. Almost a year later, they had an argument and never talked to each other again, but kept tabs on each other's life (later revealed).
After 14 years they got together again and never thought of looking back. He found in her, the freedom he always wanted himself to experience, and she found the peace she was looking for in her getaways and travels to unknown places. Rhea had the habit of sneaking out of the house and returning after days of her father and sister waiting for her and worrying in her absence.
Their story comes to an abrupt stop when Rhea goes missing again. Only this time she is not out on an escape from her life but actually disappeared, and Goutham is accused of kidnapping her.
What I liked about the story: - the first chapter, the writing is creative and open to perspective - the character of Deekshith: sarcastic, funny to an extent and on point. - Rhea! For me, she was the hero of the story. - Amazing lines and tidbits here and there (the way the author describes the blush of a man, happiness like glitter in the birthday balloon) - the mystery of the love story - small snippets of Goutham and Rhea meeting different people and recording their life stories in their minds and tapes - the short ad films Goutham writes - the characters, in general, were relatable
What could be: - few jokes where not so funny as they were intended to be - Although the ending was not bad or shocking, quite expected of a person like Nissar who had gone through so much himself, I would like to see the angle of the story if Avinash and Anupama were to be the suspects. When the script was brought into the light, Avinash could've done it too (he brought the script to him when he got into a fight with Vinayak). That could've been a good turn of events too.
All in all, I liked the beginning and I liked how it ended, with Goutham and Rhea content with each other, and how they kept the faith of a man in his son alive.
Its an amazing book.this book has it all..be it suspense, thrill, romance, experiences, motivational talks.the lead characters are beautifully penned down. All the twists nd turns are well written nd executed.the last few chapters keeps u hookd up...its a must read book..!.
It's a very good read. One thing that striked me was the silence of Rhea, she is mysterious, crazy and finally she would reveal true self leaving us with a lot of thoughts. Must read if you like suspense:)
Story plot that started as a normal one raises exponentially after the introduction of Rhea in 4th chapter and doesnot see a low point after that... Not another normal love story... the last 5 to 6 chapters will keep you on the edge of the seat..
A beautiful love story with a spice of exciting suspense that keeps you glued to the pages of the book and a unique blend of sarcasm that cracks you up even in the gravest circumstances...
There is a subtle element of sensitivity that the author has depicted in various parts of the story.. The relation between Rhea and her father transits from animosity to mutual love and respect for each other, the way Rhea empathizes and helps people right from her childhood days, the renovation of Anwar cha-cha's chat centre and the most touching part is how the author keeps intact the trust of a father on his son(Nissar)..
I personally have never been fond of love stories, but the authors depiction of falling in love makes the soul to yearn for it..
I appreciate the author's creativity in beautifully describing very minute details like the beauty of a girl, the waterfall, the nightfall, the first kiss.. Embedding the short films in the story was an interesting concept as well... The first one- A Game called Love, was my personal favorite.
The value of the book however lies in the significant message that it conveyed of facing life instead of running away. I feel in today's insensitive world we are all running away from things - from situations, from people and sometimes from our own self, whereas the right thing to do is to fearlessly face it.. no matter what the situation is and how hard it is... and make peace with it..
The book is a page turner! A travel-mystery set up in a beautiful lovestory. Rhea will last in the readers memory for days. Unlike other indian novels this does not have action/situation comedy but has a funny satirical or sarcastic comedy, which is a delight to read. Enjoyed reading the funny description of the situations. But, dont mistake, the story gradually gets serious and the mystery factor through out the book is nail biting.
The lovestory is different and smooth. It does get a little slow in the middle(5 pages) but the speed the story picks up after that makes you forget the slow phase, leaving the reader with a refreshed mind at the end when the mystery is revieled. The dialogs in the climax needs a special mention. Worth every rupee.!
When ever we read ,not every story gets attached to us, but when we share a part of it our life it stays forever.. This book is one of them we just can't read it .it gives us the experience of story like something that is alive.the way the characters have been plotted and how subject is narrated takes the book to next level. The emotions carried by Rhea,Gowtham,Nissar and other characters makes them one amonug us. When we travel through the story ,it lits up our smiles, ignites our thought process and just gives space for self introspection.. It is simple beautifully narrated book worthy of every single penny spent on it...kudus to writer for pulling it out in the best way.. #Madhusudan
The character of Rhea is quite mysterious but interesting as the layers of her character unfold through the chapters. The book is emotionally connecting and keeps you engaged until the end.
My favorite line in the book " I want to find out what the pattern is ... the pattern of life. All these lives seem like stories... waiting for their happy ending."
The depth in each character has to be specially praised. Rhea, the lead character, is very well thought of. The mystery in her personality is very well written. The comedy is hillarous btw. Worth the money.
There is always one person who stands out all, the one who completes it all, what would our lives be if love wasn't the medicine that cured it all. For Goutham, it was Rhea. Journey across the street, the title itself is surprisingly apt to the story. A beautiful love story that you can't resist liking at the end, it is perfectly banded together with a spectrum of emotions and written in a very simple but gripping language. The story revolves around two best friends - Rhea, a mysterious beautiful girl who is always on the run to help others, carrying herself with a charming quality of living in the moment and our hero, Goutham, is a creative & dreamer boy who has a great passion towards writing. With the passage of time, the interaction between these two keeps reducing to the time they are in college. After 14 years of Awkward silence... Now, after so many years they have started talking again, realizing how much they missed each other, wondering why they drifted apart, Goutham has many unanswered questions and doubts,he enquires where Rhea has traveled all these years as he had been keeping up with the whereabouts of Rhea only through rumors and wanted to satisfy his curiosity directly through her. Despite their opposite personalities, they blend in well. All the characters and their friendship with Goutham is beautifully narrated with their favorite hideout place, long drives on motorbike with Rhea with no particular destination, lame jokes and it all makes one cherish the enduring bond he/she shares with their loved ones. Journey across the street can be your next read as it's not much time consuming with a satisfying ending.

Thanks to the Book Planet PR team for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for a honest review. It is like a full bollywood movie I. e it has friendship, Romance, comedy and than the SSSHH part begins (suspense). two people who are way different from each other but bond well even after that. Rhea who has a troubled life and on the other hand Goutham has a normal life. they are childhood frds but like in some cases they stop talking for 14 years. It has beautiful college friendship than the romance and finally the suspense. In start it kind of bit slow but as you get more and more into it, the myserty starts getting you in. then till the end it keeps you engrossed than the suspense unveiles. Writing is very easy to understand. People who enjoy all dis will surely enjoy this read.
This is a romantic suspense thriller. The book starts off with a short film by Goutham Jain and his team of 4.This is first time I'm reading a book in which a character has my name. Avinash and Anupama the love birds,Deepkshit and Kruthika. Then we come to know Rhea, the outcast with her love for travel. They lived in the same street and were best friends in childhood. They stopped talking due to a fight and later after 14 years Goutham and Rhea, rediscover each other. Then one day Rhea disappears.
Where is Rhea? Will Rhea's quest for love end in Goutham? Is Goutham falling for Rhea? Read to find out
I found the first chapter little boring, but I'm happy I gave the book a second try. Initially I thought it was just a love story, but I loved the suspense in the later chapters. I couldn't find culprit before Goutham, that is what made it interesting. I love Rhea's character and the conversation between them are so cute.
Recommended for romantic suspense thriller readers.
Let me just say that towards the end, this story broke my heart into a million pieces and then again joined it to one. The story opens up with an investigation. The story revolves around two childhood friends, Goutham and Rhea. They stopped taking for 14 years and then reunite. In the meanwhile, Rhea always remained a mystery to everyone. And now, Gowtham is more than ever excited to know more about her. No it's not a teenage love story, it's just so much more than that. Its a pack of multiple emotions packed into one. Both the timelines unfolded into a beautiful story. The bond that Rhea and Gowtham shared as kids, was just so beautiful and pure. Nicely portrayed. I was very much attracted towards Rhea's character. She's such a pretty soul. The story kept me so engaged. I HAD to finish it in one sitting. I cannot even think of any one flaw it has! Language is easy going. The writing is engaging. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!
I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway. It was long back. I got busy and didn't get time to read this book until now. Frankly, I didn't like the book. The love story part seems like a teenage dream of any guy. A crush from his childhood turns up suddenly in life and purposes him! It turns out she was in love with our narrator as a child! Which guy doesn't dream of a girl like this! There are a lot of immature teenage philosophies. Philosophies on love and travel. The reasons for every twist in the story seems stupid. Just because narrator didn't give 100 bucks, The girl who loves him so much stopped talking to him for 14 years! There are inconsistencies in story. In the beginning, the narrator introduced themselves as richer than higher middle-class but not high class, but towards the end he struggles to arrange 25 k for his short film!
