Their Vampire Queen #2

Queen Takes King

Rate this book
How many Blood will come to the vampire queen's call... and will they be able to protect her from the king?

For the first time in her adult life, Shara has plenty of money thanks to the Isador legacy--and she's not alone. Daire and Rik are devoted lovers, but they know other Blood are coming. Blood who may challenge Rik for the coveted alpha spot at her back.

As her power grows, so does her hunger. But without fangs, she fears she'll never be the queen her Blood expect. More Blood means power struggles and complications, and she has no idea how to keep everyone happy. Worse, her dreams are quickly becoming something to fear.

Moving to establish her permanent nest, she can't stop dreaming of the king. A massive monster. Chained in darkness. Lost to madness. He roars with fury in her dreams, demanding his release.

But is he the key to unraveling her own mysterious past--or the most dangerous threat of all?

This is a MMFFM+ polyam series and Shara will never be forced to choose just one. #whychoose

Shara is a billionaire, with vacation properties! No longer homeless and hunted monthly by monsters that want to rip her throat out. She is growing her vampire powers, delving into vampire politics, and searching for a nest for her and her men.

In addition to Rik and Daire from book one, we’ve now added the following men to her Blood.

*Sir Guillaume -an ancient old school knight also a hell horse.
“When I shift, I'm a hell horse. That’s why in the old days, when I served in Ireland, I was called the Dullahan, the headless rider.”
*Xin - an invisible assassin and a wolf wolf.
*Mehen - an ancient, crabby man who has been stuck in his dragon form for hundreds of years.
*Nevarre - a raven/man who wears a kilt and is dead...but alive

Lots more discussions about how her growing powers work and the political pitfalls of making a wrong decision. Lots of blood partaking, fluid swapping, and menstrual blood sharing. Her period is finally over at the end of this book. MFM/MM/MMMF

Shara transforms in this book into some interesting creatures. Also, her bite makes her men instantly ejaculate...I don’t know if that’s a win-win or not. I think we’re up to six men in the harem now? Someone needs to ask Santa for a XXL California King bed and extra sheets for the holidays.

Her men worship her and it’s kinda adorable.
Xin cradled my feet in his hands like I’d given him a priceless artifact to hold.
That man needs more love.

My queen, Shara Isador

Although young, in her earlier twenties, Shara already behaves like a poweful vampire queen. She will expand her court of Bloods in this book.

Besides her Alpha and her warcat, in this book 4 more males will dedicate their life and their blood to her: A medieval knight, a lone wolf, a dead raven and a ruthlessly dragon king.
Shara's secure nest is ready to be established and she is almost ready to meet the other queens.

If you like vampire novels AND if you enjoy reverse harem novels AND if you are comfortable reading about tons of sex and blood; then this book is for you ;)

I cringed a lot while reading this book.
Blood will never turn me on.
I will never be near a guy while on my period.
This book/series is starting to worry me.
My poor eyes.

Queen Takes King was an interesting book BUT I'm just not into the whole blood thing. I never will be and if I ever start to think otherwise - murder me. The smut was amazing but I honestly was cringing so much due to the blood. I get that she's a vampire.. but they aren't all vampires and I'm just not digging the whole blood burning/turning them on. It creeps me out. Why did I read this?

Even though I'm cringing while writing this.. I'm still probably going to read the rest of this series. I hate starting something and not finishing them (she says.. while she has endless series that she hasn't finished - oops!?). I have nothing against blood or anything.. but this makes me a bit squeamish and I don't like that.

Overall, I read it. I don't know how I feel about it. I need a drink.

this was surprising. and not in a good way.

i really liked the first one, so i thought i'd like this one too. but - and i can't believe i'm saying this - there was too much sex. yes!! i said that!! seriously though, i like my steamy scenes, but if there's such a huge saturation you just get desensitised to it and it loses all its power.

that and shara was on her period for the first 80% of the book so the first 80% of the book was filled with period sex.

While I gave 5 Stars to the first in the series, I will not be continuing forth with the series. DNF @78% of book 2.

Automatic 3 stars.

My first issue with the series as a whole is the lack of emotional connection. The Blood pop up so quickly, filling the ranks, the queen and the reader don't have time to know them, to become attached to them. At the same time, it's literally been 3 days in total, with the queen banging the first two blood within minutes of meeting them... 24-hours later, another Blood shows up, and she doesn't want to attach herself to him until there is LOVE present. What love? How does she love the first two within seconds. Let's just call it lust and metaphysics and be done with it. The LOVE angle turned me off. Love takes time and shared experiences. Having sex is not love. A Blood to his queen, that is called duty not love.

The first book was yummy because there were only three characters, but as book 2 goes forth, the queen is picking up new Blood at an exponential rate, so there is no getting to know them, no emotional attachment, and the sex scenes are clinical without a connection. Just a put a into b and bleed on them.

The never-ending period. 2 books, spanning a few days, always menstruating, yet had the ability to clean herself and her clothing, yet never thought to do so when it came to menstrual blood. At this point, since it was never-ending, I think she needed a doctor to see if she had a medical condition.

Within 3 days, spanning 2 books, she picks up 4 blood and a king, having 20+ sexual interactions, there wasn't enough hours in a day to fit everything that happens- to fit in how often she must have sex/bleed/be bled.

Imagine adding another boyfriend every 12 hours... while fitting sleeping, eating, bleeding, having sex with the previous boyfriends, and learning how to be a queen with magical abilities.

The more Blood she collects, the more she is bled/bleeding them/bedding them, at what point will she not have 5 minutes a day to do anything else?

While I loved the first book and the premise itself, as it moved forward it lost focus, became chaotic, with plot holes getting deeper and plot points being lost. There was more of an emotional connection to the Blood with each other than to their queen. It devolved into a sex-fest, but what was once new and exciting became redundant.

Adjusting to a totally different lifestyle, Shara can not only afford to feed herself, but wear a dress worth more than her entire year's salary as a janitor. From janitor to legendary Queen, Shara's life is better. She should be set. With two loving men at her side, increasing to another two, what more could she need? What she really wants is to revel in the love and blood. She wants to finally be able to breathe and be safe in her own home. Is it too much to ask, to live a quiet life?

Instead, Shara continues to add men to her collection of knights, dedicated to her preservation. The symbiotic relationship between Queen to knights is erotic, alluring and orgasmic. A new wrinkle to this lovely circle of lovers is finding a hurt "demon" trapped in a mountain for millenniums. Why does she need him? He seems like a complete pain in the butt.

What do I like about this book? Honestly, the struggle between the men and the pain Shara needs to suffer. She isn't handed easy powers. Each one comes with blood sacrifice. One could say Shara is a masochist with a taste for heavy pain. Then again, she unconsciously doles out heavy pain too - with a bit of chemical play. I used to not like blood play but dayum, it is so good in here.

I realize this series is not supposed to be kinky or BDSM, but I can not help but see it at every turn. Ms. Burkhart slips it in so smoothly. We have a Domme who is loving and caring one. She experiences pain before she hands it out to her lovers. Her lovers are primal and love rough play. The erotic power struggle between her Alpha knight and the dragon is so bloody hawt. I loved every fight and the forced submission. The domination games are needed and helps to bring the men in line. Shara's loving touch helps smooth away any hurt feelings.

Seriously, there is a plot going on and it is taking a little bit of time to get there. This story is more than an erotic feast. It is setting up all the good soldiers for the upcoming war. More is revealed about Vampire politics and it isn't looking good. The women are cruel and evil. The problem with living so long, people and others become disposable commodity. Hopefully with Shara, this won't happen. She is young though. Who knows if she will be able to continue to keep sharing herself with the men that have chosen her to follow.

This series keeps my attention riveted and I can not wait to read the next book. The characters are unique. The world building is slow and steady. The sex is hawt and intense. This book is highly recommended to kinky urban fantasy readers who like their alpha men tamed by a seductive Domme.

* I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

!! Ladies and gentlemen !!

This book is all about magic-wielding, shapeshifting vampires, crazy Greek gods, vampire courts, building a nest and also finding out who Shara really is- beyond being a badass vampire Queen.

Oh and did I mention her Bloods are growing in numbers ? HAWT! 🔥🔥

I do wish the author would cut down on the whole period thing. 😂 She writes about it A LOT. And I get it now. All blood from the Queen is precious & powerful 😂 But let’s move on, shall we? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway! I found this book so compelling. It’s so unique and I really hope we get more “ story”, and not just the hot ass sex. (But bravo for that, Buckhart!) I am just so curious about finding out who she is, how she will be as a queen, and how the storyline will develop! This can be really good!
Probably what I need to give the final star, now that I think about it?🤔

There are so many great ideas in this book, and I am really excited to see where Buckhart will take us.
Big fucking points for the diversity! #awesome

Normal body temperature can range from 97.8° F (36.5°C) to 99°F (37.2°C) for a healthy adult, however the characters in this book are neither normal nor human so their blood has the properties to level mountains as a young blood queen draws to her side all manner of powerful seductive monsters who hear her call to help consolidate her growing court as she prepares to defend herself and those she loves against an army of blood thirsty vampire queens.

It's a race against life and death as Shara seeks to awaken a mad millennia old psychotic King serpent chained within the bowels of the earth to add to her growing number of 'bloods'.The blood never stops flowing.

The book contains fm,mm and mfmmmm scenes.

GAH SO MUCH BLOOD! asdhl;fahsdgaosdj and if they said the word period one more time I was going to loose my mind. How many times do we need to hear that her period blood was more powerful? Zero times. That's how many. But I kept listening whY? because the story is interesting! (and also it's free ) I won't lie.. the RH sex stuff doesn't work for me here. I almost want to skip the sex parts. There is just too much blood.

This is the second in the Queen Takes series this being Queen Takes King by Joely Sue Burkhart and the story goes from strength to strength.
It has become addictive and I have the next book ready - Queen Takes Queen

The characters I'm finding fascinating, and in a way endearing. Sharah Isador the young, newly-realised Queen within the vampires world and last direct descendent to Isis, Egyptian goddess, is learning about and coming into her powers along with her Knight bloods, who continue to grow in number to protect, feed and serve her, as she does them too, and then she is drawn to seek out Leviathan, an entombed King and a dragon shifter - but is he interested in surviving and serving her or eating her?
This is becoming a reverse harem series, Shara as head and Queen, then Alrik, her Alpha and rock troll is strong and firm as he is lovely, as is Daire - the warcat, and they've been with her from the start, then Sir Guy and Xin join the ranks, is there enough love and lust to go round...and don't forget Shara's having trouble with her incoming fangs, but oh, boy, now that is a scene and a half...I really had trouble putting this book/series down, and it has heart pounding moments...as well as being highly erotic, including unusual activities and pairings that may not be everyone's cup of tea;) Also worth a mention are the ultra-competent serving humans such as with Gina, Sharah's consiliarus.

Some fascinating and original concepts - I'm off to read Queen Takes Queen; third in the series, but here two more are planned. Bring them on.

This is just into the five stars for me, as the first was border 4/5, so this gets better as we know characters more and storyline develops.

If you were to publish an outline of this book, it sounds overstuffed and completely unworkable and unbelievable. But it somehow it does work, because the author does such a good job of writing and balancing everything.

It has so many of my favorite PNR/urban fantasy things. Vampires. Cat shifters. Dragons. Wyverns. Strong, silent warriors. Incredible action scenes. Sexy sex. Purring. Pizza parties. Skeleton armies bursting through the fucking window. There’s so much to enjoy and I love how Shara has come into her power and already uses it so wisely.

More things done well: distinctly appealing characters, which is hard when you’re building a big reverse harem. Power dynamics that acknowledge alpha/shifter/harem culture but are respectful of individual feelings, agency, and consent. The sheer physicality of the way shape-shifting, magic, and mental and physical bonds are portrayed. The humor and care for others present throughout the story.

I think understanding that this series is independently published erotic PNR rather than your regular paranormal romance is important, as I can see how all this might be too much for some readers—and there are times when I’m worried at the dizzying speed at which the harem is growing and wild new creatures and lore are introduced, too. But for me, so far it’s been a ridiculously fun ride.

So I went into this assuming Shara would be getting another mate. I was super happy as in book one she only has the two.... but alas I was pleasantly surprised because by the end of this on she had an additional four 😱😱. Im not 100% sure all of them will stay but it was mentioned she can have a hundred if she wanted so time will tell, perhaps there will be more. This book was again super fuckin hot but also very bloody. While the drinking, fuc*ing, biting orgies are still a thing-practically all the time, this time there’s a blood addition that skeeved me and many others (given the reviews) out. Shara is quickly coming in to her role as Queen and she’s gained quite a lot of confidence as well as power since finding out who and what she is. She still has a lot to learn about the vampire community rules but that’s why she has her men to guide her, look out for her and rock her flipping world. I really enjoyed this book and my only wish would be that the increase of her men would have happened more gradually or at least allowed us to know them better. I still can’t even grasp where Nevarre came from, I mean could I have missed them talking about him entirely? It’s possible because I might have gotten those dreams confused with her leviathan/dragon dreams. Who knows lol?! I felt like I had a good grasp on things once she added her knight and then Xin. But the last two are still a mystery. I know what they are but not who if that makes sense. Obviously there are more books so I’m eager to see how things play out with all of them. Loving the development of the story, can’t wait to see where it goes. Hopefully there’s a little lot less blood

Incredible

I thought book one was amazing but this one might be even better. Shera is really coming into her powers now as she builds her Blood. We get some new detail on his about every page mixed it with lots of drama, steamy scenes, and relationship building. If you are in the mood for a great vampire series that will blow your mind while being hot at the same time then you have to try this book/series. I loved every minute of it so I give it 5/5 stars.

When I started to read this book, I was little nervous that the brilliantness of the first one wouldn’t hold up, that maybe this would be more of a filler towards the grand finale. Luckily, that couldn’t be further from the case! The progression and constant character growth is nothing short of fantastic and Joely does such an amazing job at writing the right amount of new information, enough to keep me hooked, but not so much that it becomes overwhelming.

description

Shara, who used to barely be able to eat, now has full access to the Isador estate and can afford pretty much anything she could ever want or need. But for Shara it’s not the materialistic good that counts, she’s revelling in the love, blood and sex she shares with her Blood. She is faring better than anyone could expect, and she's getting a better understanding of her place in this new world of hers.

She is quickly adding more Blood to her ranks and with each one she takes, it seems to light up the path she’s meant to walk in life. Even though, she still only has a very small court, she manages to call some of the (so far mentioned) most powerful and even legendary Blood's to her.

However, not everything is sex and blood, Shara is quickly getting some unwanted attention from some of the other vampire Queens and in order to live the quiet life she dreams of she will not be able to ignore them forever.

Without spoiling too much, I enjoy the personality clashes between the Shara and her King, and I love how she doesn't try to further her gain by using manipulation, lies or force, she rules and takes with love.

So here's to the former virgin Queen, may she get her Queen in the third book

WARNING: This book contains detailed sex scenes with M/F, M/M, M/M/F scenes, along with a strong adult language use, so I wouldn't recommend this series if you're easily offended. If not, I personally think it suits the world created here, and I don't find it cheesy or forced!

Loved book two in the series - one of my favs. Shara has Alrik (Rik) and Daire, and adds two more blood (Guillaume, the last living Templar knight, and Xin, an assassin who can turn invisible). She also spends most of the book figuring out how to take a Vampire King - who are usually put to death or locked away because they’re too powerful and hard to control. The one she sees in her visions happens to be a dragon.

The sex, blood, and action are amped up from the previous book. I loved both G and Xin, who I picture as Pedro Pascal and Steven Yeun.

Go off Joely

Once again Joely Sue Burkhart has stabbed me and left my body in a ditch emotionally. It's so rare in a reverse harem that I don't just ignore half of the guys, but she has a way of introducing characters and making me believe in them six pages later. I also really love the way politics comes into play and how the worldbuilding is based off of that. The conflict doesnt seem like it's there to buffer a love story, it feels like both storylines are there out of necessity and couldn't be unwound from each other without the whole plot unfurling. Amazing book!!!!

Wow! Just wow!!!! I love this book so freaking much!

I love how bad ass Our Queen is! And she has some amazing guys to support her. Talk about unexpected new comers also. I’m so glad this book isn’t slow paced. It’s got, dirty, and presses boundaries that I love see being pressed.

Well the story is moving along. We have more guys and powers are blooming. I like the new bloods and their stories and I liked the way that we are finding out more about the other queens. I don't think she's going to make many friends with them. Can't wait to read about more of the story.

What is it about this erotic paranormal romance series? It’s so bananas and so incredibly bloody, like really, really bloody—more blood than however much you’re imagining right now. And yet it is incendiary levels of steamy with all manner of inventive menage sex scenes. This installment is MMMMMMF as three new Bloods and a king come to join Shara’s nest. (My god, the sentences I have to write when reviewing this series. Never ceases to amuse me.) In keeping with the first book, the plot happens at a breakneck pace, covering a lot of territory in a short amount of time, especially given how many new characters we meet. By the time this book ends, I would guess only a couple of weeks have passed since Shara even learned she was a vampire queen. I don’t know what else to say really. It’s fun, it’s hot, and it’s best to just roll with whatever happens, be it Shara turning into a wyvern or believing she’s the most powerful queen of them all.

I do have some questions about representation the characters of color. Xin is Chinese and Shara cannot read him at first. He’s described as impassive and she thinks “I didn’t feel anything when I looked at him. Would that change once we had a bond? Or was I just not attracted to him?” This made me think about the racism Asian men experience on dating apps and how they’re rated as less attractive. Now Shara eventually figures out a way to establish a bond with Xin and they’re both happy campers after that but Xin’s characterization does seem to play into stereotypes about Asian men. Along those lines, Mehen was imprisoned for centuries and a queen’s blood is his key to get out. He desperately does not want to be enslaved by a queen so he plans on killing Shara, who obviously doesn’t want to die. She figures out a way to bite him so his options are to either bend to her will or to die. The optics of a Black man who is at the whim of a white woman are not great, even if he’s still a king and he eventually decides he does want to be a part of Shara’s nest. Shara does care a lot about consent but the big thrust of this series is her taking power and learning how to rule so Mehen is going to lose out to those power dynamics regardless. I also don’t like that he’s one of two characters of color and he’s seen as the villain for much of this story. Lastly, Shara is an Aima queen and a descendant of the goddess Isis. Her mother was Egyptian but her father was not so she’s half Egyptian herself. But she continues to function as a white character. I’m willing to see how these things are treated in the next book but recognize they could be dealbreakers for others.

Character notes: Shara is a 22 year old half vampire, half something else. She’s a cobra shifter and wyvern. Alrik is an 88 year old white Blood vampire, Alpha, and rock troll shifter. Daire is a white Blood vampire and war cat shifter. Guillaume is a white Blood vampire and hell horse shifter who used to be a Templar Knight. Xin is a 1300+ year old Chinese Blood vampire and wolf shifter with the gift of invisibility. Mehen is a centuries old Black Leviathan (dragon shifter) and king. Nevarre is a white druid raven. The Bloods appear to be bisexual but some could be pansexual. This is set in Kansas City.

CW: graphic blood, murder in self-defense, past torture (secondary character), imprisonment (secondary character), , secondary character was ordered to feed people against his will (past), past beheading, reference to minor character’s partner who died of cancer, references to breeding, ableist language

This series is losing momentum- and FAST.

First: I think a book about Alrik and Daire's history would have been more enjoyable than this shit.
Seriously, I am so pissed that Daire is thrown in the backburner when him and Alrik have such a deep connection.

Second: Shara- I am starting to hate her name as much as I am starting to hate her. All of the sudden she's about wealth and sex and giant penises- SHE LITERALLY LOST HER VIRGINITY SIX DAYS AGO.
Again, the pace is all off. They are all falling in love in a matter of days HOURS.
I find the depth of this series to be as shallow as the water that flooded my basement last night when I incorrectly hooked up my washer hoses.

Really, I am not going to bother with the third book.

Third, I can see the author trying to make this book somewhat interesting with action and adventure but nah, it's lacking in that too. Anything that is supposed to be remotely thrilling like her finding this king actually ends up being a super chill conquest.
NO.
EXCITEMENT.

Fourth, so much talk of her period blood. I'll be honest- I don't mind period talk, all women have them. It's natural. I love complaining about mine. But like... dipping your finger in your period blood as a zap of energy, or having your guys just fucking ravenous towards your period blood. It just didn't sit right by me. I get it they are vampires but the way it's so highly sought after.... just no.

Fifth: I really wish this author and editor duo would have found a better word than "burn". Because these characters "BURNED" for things far too often. If that word was supposed to insinuate passion or something all it did was make me cringe.
I've also come to hate the word nest.

I'm done.

I need a book that is actually enjoyable.
