Ava Lane wants to overcome her fear in peace. Mia wants to party.
The twins reach their breaking point when they move into an isolated house in the middle of the Arkansas woods. As Ava moves from accepting her fear to relishing it... as Mia exploits a tragedy to impress her new friends... the man hiding in the cellar watches their every move.
FALLOUT DREAMS plunges headfirst through trap doors, eavesdrops through hundred-year-old vents, and brews a pitch-black tale of voyeurism, illicit attraction, and a fiery battle for redemption.
"I want to offend my readers. I want them to fall in love, to lose their minds, to think and feel and dream. If they're not shellshocked and hungry by the final page, I haven't done my job."
Whether it's a modern-day fairytale or hardcore science fiction, Jake Vander Ark attacks every story with brutal realism and down-to-earth characters. No subject is taboo. Truth is paramount.
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago influenced the experimental quirks of his stories, while his pursuits in Hollywood hammered the importance of traditional storytelling. This unique fusion of structure and innovation gave life to the most beautiful girl in the world in THE ACCIDENTAL SIREN, the gritty morality tale of LIGHTHOUSE NIGHTS, the cryptic prologue of THE BRANDYWINE PROPHET, and the mind-melting climax of THE DAY I WORE PURPLE.
When Jake isn't writing, he's building rustic furniture for his small business, engaging with his readers online, and livin' it up with his dog. To see more of his creative work, check out www.vanderarkbooks.com.
Buyer beware, this house comes with more than weathered charm and an old furnace. Trevor is back, just as charming, (he IS good with mothers), and just as twisted. Trevor, its current owner, has no intention of leaving his home-his real home that is, under the house, in his secret cellar domain where he can become the perfect puppet master and hidden host. (Foreclosures can be so disruptive)
Ava and Mia Lane, twins, are about to become his latest project as he watches their every move and hears their every word. Has he found his perfect pawns to play his game? Is he ready for what could happen to his heart?
Ava struggles with a crippling past, going to college is not her top priority. Mia is the social party-girl, willing to go to any length to impress her new friends. Once they were alike in every way, fun-loving sisters of the soul as only twins can be, but ten months ago that all changed and now Ava has grown dark and Mia seems hellbent on living both of their lives in the fast lane. Yep, all that and the secret in the cellar, the eyes that watch…until he had to take action and someone is going to get hurt or worse, all while Ava gets darker and darker and Mia is clueless as to how to fix her other half. Is that what Ava wants, perhaps she has found her own place to belong...perhaps she has discovered the secret of the house...
Jake Vander Ark’s FALLOUT DREAMS is another dark and creepy episode in his Midnight Mastermind Series, but I have to say, his style has the perfect amount of grit with an atmosphere that is constantly foreboding. I wasn’t sure what to expect on the next page, kind of like waiting for the other shoe to fall, because you know it will, just not when. Twins! Mr. Vander Ark took on writing about twins, and did a pretty good job of nailing the connection that identical twins share! To be honest, that could make an entire book right there and actually played perfectly into this tale of dark delights and secrets. Start to finish, there is nothing better than to read page after page of the unexpected and to be rewarded with a poker-hot ending! Want something to really test your ability to follow a nightmarish maze without getting lost? Like the thrill of the unknown just behind that next turn? Because with Trevor, it could be anything, especially if he wants someone.

Ava and Mia Lane are twins. But ten months ago a car accident changed that. Ava has become dark and depressed while Mia is trying to find a way to bring her sister back to her. They go off to college and move into a secluded house in the woods. But they are not alone. Trevor, the owner, is not going to let the sale of his house come between his home beneath the house. He starts messing with the girls. He might be a master puppeteer but he is not in control of everything.
Ava has gone through a lot and has a serious scar to tell her story. She is trying to find her place in this new world of hers and wants to be alone to do so. Mia on the other hand can feel the canyon forming between her and her sister but can’t figure out how to bring Ava back to her. And then there is Trevor. Creeping around in his fallout shelter below the house. He is a messed up person yet just makes this story even creepier with his plan to manipulate the girls.
This is a great, creepy book that had me wondering about my neighbors. I admit that I have not read Lighthouse Nights but I will definitely be getting a copy shortly.
I received Fallout Dreams from Sage’s Reading Room for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
Fallout Dreams is a great sequel to Lighthouse Nights. There's so much I loved about this book. The writing was beautiful and vivid, the characters fun and exciting to read along with. I loved the union of the twins' names, Miava, and the way they shaped the wild ride that was this story. At the end, Trevor's story leaves me hungry for more and I would snap up any book he charmed his way into. I had a hard time putting this book down and I know it's one I'll read over and over again.
I won both "Fallout Dreams" and the first in the series, "Lighthouse Nights" on Goodreads. I loved both of them! Definitely kept me reading until I would fall asleep and drop the book, didn't want to stop. I definitely would recommend reading both book one and two of the Midnight Mastermind Series.
