The Stampede

Rate this book
Sheriff Jed Morgan thinks his life is about to get a lot quieter when he gets voted out of office in a bought-and-paid for election rigged by his family’s long-time nemesis Arnie Williams. But when the new railroad comes to town and Jed’s neighbors, the Crawfords at the Bar C ranch, have their water poisoned and Arnie Williams’ hands try to stampede their cattle, Jed begins to find that his lawman days were far from over. As Cora Crawford’s romantic interest in Jed mysteriously cools with no explanation, and a hard man with a limp and a long gun comes to town and takes an interest in the Bar C, Jed begins to suspect that the Crawfords’ troubles—and perhaps even the stampede that killed Jed’s own family years before—might be connected.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Another great C J Petit book!

Jed loved Kate and was planning on marriage until tragedy happened. His bro, sis, & parents were killed in a stampede. In this time of heartache Katy suddenly stops all correspondence, married another man, and left town. Her family also cut all friendly ties. Seven years later, Kate's sister Cora enters the picture and the past gradually unfolds. An awesome exciting book, I loved it and you will too.

MEMORABLE, EXCITING, ACTION

5 STARS +++ for The Stamped a fun thought provoking old western era drama. This full on gun play action packed story will make any reader cheer for Jed who was the victim of the stampede when he was a young man; so it will take almost towards the end of the story for him to finally discover who started it & why, after all this time. Great writing & shocking as the thought process involved, it does mimic the astonishing display of lack of trust in our society today. Lack of trust is in our relationships, our families, friends, teachers , law enforcement officers & it just permeates our society in whole. It may be as if a whisper but it's there & kinda made this story feel relevant. Anyway the wonderful story has brave women, some who don't hesitate to step up to try & help their own situation, other characters you will love like Ike the livery owner who has a personality that's great, the barber who will fill you in on all the latest happenings in town, and just so many more you almost feel like you know them personally when you finish the story. Of course the evil men, good guys, women that went wrong & the ones who come thru are all baked into the drama but they should be because they are in every day Life. Finally, as if there could be more the railroad is involved, of course, finding right of ways & laying track. So, plan on reading this one all the way through, situate your family, fix your snacks, put phone on do not disturb, get comfortable, and take these next hours for yourself & enjoy the read.

Another great read.

C J Petit gives us another romantic Western emphasizing the importance of trust and the dangers of lack of trust. Sheriff Jed loses his bid to stay Las Veges’ chief law officer when his opponent is financed by his arch nemesis. Retiring to his ranch, things pick up after a brief time. The new sheriff completely shirks his duties turning to his pleasures with the painted ladies and the bottle. Meanwhile law and order go by the wayside.
When Jed is forced to take action to protect the citizens of the county he is resworn as Sheriff and follows up on finding the killer of his neighbor. The investigation uncovers a diabolical plan that destroys lives and results in gun battles that completely change lives in Las Vegas and the surrounding area. Be sure to read this action filled story of the part of the West that we look upon today far differently than part of the old west.

Jen was the sheriff county sheriff of Las Vegas and surrounding territories

He was ousted by Arnold Williams Patsy and promoted by Arnold to win but he could hardly read and didn't want to be sure really he just wanted to hang out in the saloon with the girls. Joe was a loser. Just thought he retired to his ranch with his horses and he took on his neighbor's cattle when their pond was fouled with the dead steer. The Williams family wanted the property of the neighboring family for their water and the railroad rights. The war went on. This was a very suspenseful and dangerous book filled also with romance in the background. But there was hidden stories as to supposedly why the romance couldn't continue.

Every Rain Cloud Has a Silver Lining

I picked 4stars as perfect but missing what I love the most: nature, trees, tall grass, swift flowing water making deep pools for swimming; white puffy clouds with dark bottoms of rain to soak the dry soil; mountain rock ledges and narrow canyons ending in sheltering caves with warm fires and smoke escaping up fissures to dissipate harmlessly above ground.
I admire the authors not too subtle subtle ending with a medium sized cattle farm to counter balance the beginning disaster of stampeding cattle

Law and Order

This was a great story that started off with a stampede of cattle almost completely destroying the life of the MC. The sad part is that the setting was a picnic celebration that ended in tragedy. Not only did it cause the MC to loose his family and friends but he also lost his fiancé. Wow, you’d think that was the end of the story right at the beginning of the story, but it was just the beginning of bringing Law and Order to wild West. Another great story by C.J. Petit.

LOVE AND TRUST

Another great western love series by C.J. Petit. Lots of human missteps that are eventually straightened while others bite the dust. Greed jealousy and murder, let's not forget domestic abuse both done by parents who knowingly know that their daughters aren't doing well with the spouses they've chosed to marry.
Again great loves stories from the newly settled west. Those of you enjoy westerns will truly enjoy C.J.Petit, the western love author.

Strong women is the under lying theme in this exciting story. Along with a Sheriff who plays Robinhood in his community, providing gifts of money to assist beaten women, wives, sisters, plus young men in his town that lose parents an need help to achieve some degree of normalcy , with better options in their lives. Although this is first story of a main character with an abundance of funds in the West

Very good western story that all will enjoy.

I have read 28 of C. j. Petit books and have enjoyed them all. I often wondered how he comes up with new a exciting stories without repeating the same set of circumstances but he does. Great books to read but you will find yourself reading rather then doing other things.

C.J.Petit is the best.

Mr Petit is a great story teller. He always writes excellent stories filled with adventures, great characters and a little romance. Another story of greedy men who wants what his neighbors have and is ready to kill for it. Their is always a humble hero who has a good soul and helps everyone. I read the whole thing in one day.

An uncomplicated plot but very entertaining book

Jed is the consummate cowboy hero. Rugged good-looking, tough and yet gentle, expert shot and seemingly always understands the situation. Typical western plot with the bad guy wanting to own all the ranches and willing to use any means to get them. Familiar but still enjoyable.

Good story, but little or no editing

I have read all of the C. J. PETIT books and they all are good reads. All of them have many spelling errors and confusing lines a editor could have corrected.
Enough said.

Great Story!

The story line is captivating. However the lack of proof reading before releasing to the readers is distracting. The switching of names ruins the moment.

Excellent western

Another novel by CJ Petit that did not disappoint nor fail to deliver. A story filled with dangerous, evil villains and men and women of integrity and virtue. A story where good triumphs over evil.

Good Story

One of Mr. Petit’s best. He kept this story “tight” and refrained from rambling. He is adept at starting with one small incident and spinning it in surprising directions.

Same ole C.J.Petit

If you like the read westerns where the bad guys always get killed and the good guy is getting married with the best girl in the county, that's it.
Anyway I enjoy it for a while before everything looks to predictable.
Thanks CJ.
