Records of the Ohanzee, #5

Revenant: The Undead King

Rate this book
When the dead walk among the living, the Revenant will seize the empty throne. King Casimer has been defeated, and Nerissa has finally cast aside her guise as Caeneus and triumphantly assumed her rightful role as the Blood of Chiyo. But saving her country from disaster isn’t as simple as retaking the throne. The prophecy warning of events that will bring about the end of civilization has not yet been fulfilled, and an ancient weapon of untold power is about to be rediscovered. The future of Chiyo, and all of Renatus, depends on Nerissa finding it before her enemies do. All the while, fires rage throughout the capital city, set by the Senka to undermine the stability of Nerissa’s rule, and rumors of Casimer’s inexplicable survival have begun to swirl. Is it a miracle or something more sinister at work? The Undead King is the fifth book of the Records of the Ohanzee series and book 1 of 3 in the Revenant story arc.

I’m a HUGE fan of Rachel R. Smith’s Records of the Ohanzee series. I enjoy the perfect blend of magical moments mixed with adorable, swoony scenes, topped with action-packed pages as well. This series is everything I love about reading a great fantasy story!

Compared to the previous book, this one was a little slower. Which I surprisingly didn’t mind. It begins right where Reflection: Dragon’s Bane left off. Nerissa and the Ohanzee have finally taken back what is rightfully theirs but the only thing missing is.. Their happily ever after.

There are many obstacles that our characters still face. The public is questioning Nerissa’s rule, and the rumors swirling around on how she even survived aren’t helping her win them over. As for me, I was super happy to be reunited with Nerissa! She’s incredibly brave yet never afraid to show her vulnerable side as well. And I love this.

Honestly I was glad to see every character. Raysel and Nerissa still make the perfect team. Charis and Amon are also back (still adorable in EVERY way)! I love how strong friendship and almost a sense of “found family” is present in this series.

“Right now, her life was a swirling hurricane, and while Raysel would fight every gale beside her, Rian was the eye of the storm. He was her center, where all the swirling worries and fears were finally stilled.”

And then there is RIAN. *sigh* He is still by Nerissa’s side (of course) and even if there weren’t too many scenes with them together, or too much romance, what there was.. It was ALL swoony and I could just squish them!

Nerissa has a lot on her plate. From trying to contain fires the Senka are setting to rumors of King Casimer still being alive, and trying to track down the magical weapon from the prophecy.. Girl is stressed! Seeing how Nerissa is dealing with all of her duties sets up the rest of the story arc for the series, though. I enjoyed the slow pace of it all.

Rachel R. Smith made it easy to fall back into this world and reminded me of why I’m rooting for these characters in the first place. Her writing is still fantastic and continues to grow! The descriptions were vivid, and I enjoy the way she is able to blend different POVs together to tell the story.

Overall, Revenant: The Undead King is another fun read in the Records of the Ohanzee series! It’s a slower paced book yet still full of magic and action with a sprinkle of swoon. I’m excited to see what happens next!

Sadly, I don't think I have any interest in this series anymore. I don't remember anything from the previous four installments and I'm not in a mood to force myself to read something. I do have to say the last two covers (this one and the 6th) are gorgeous. I may try to pick the series up again one day and I'll always check out any of Rachel's future novels or stories. 💜

I am so glad this series has come back. There were times where I had to put the book down in the sense of I wanted to savor the novel but halfway through things got more exciting and action packed so I sped through it (in a good way). Because this is book 5 in a series I will not spoil things but this book as well as this series in general reminds me of a couple of anime mashups (particularly Yona of the dawn and Story of Saiunkoku) but with its own added crystal magic. It also has a cast of characters that you enjoy as well as loathe. My only complaint with this particular book which based on the next book's title will not disappoint me was that I wanted more characters to loathe... One is presented as a  POV and one is shown to us and I appreciated that but I wanted more. Because of these points I have to give this book a 4 out of 5 stars i cannot wait to read more from this series once again and I appreciate the author for allowing me to read her books.

I waited for what seemed like an eternity for this book to be released. I followed the updates and became even more so excited upon the cover reveal.

The story picks up where it leaves all in all our favorite characters (good and bad) mange to make an appearances in some way or form.

The plot thicken in the most magical way and relationships blossomed. I was blown away by how aesthetically pleasing the writing was. It made it easy to place myself back into the series I have come to love.  And I must say the Rachel did a phenomenal job at adding twisty turns that just left me speechless when the unraveling happened. It was seriously a “OMG DID THAT JUST HAPPEN” moment that blew this novel out of the water.

All I can do now is just patiently wait for the next installment.

I had my suspicions as I closed Dragon’s Bane that this series was not really over. Nine months have gone by since Nerissa first donned a mask at the ball and her return to Chiyo to claim her place as Heiress; BUT there is still so much left undone. The 600 year old prophecy is still unfolding. No one is safe...not Chiyo and certainly not Nerissa nor Rian. The race for the final piece of the puzzle continues with several OMGs escaping from my lips. If it falls into the wrong hands it will... I don’t even want to think about it. As the story unfolds there are more questions and even more suspicions. New characters are introduced and old characters become more multi layered. They have come alive. But are they friend or foe? There is a traitor in the midst. But who and perhaps more than one? I want to know if Nerissa and Rian even stand a chance...

How long until the sixth book? Holy crap, what a cliffhanger! Excellent series. Original premise, very well drawn characters and simply marvelous story-telling.
