I wanted it to be a lil better tbh but Jane the Virgin is my favourite show so OF COURSE I LOVED IT. Even though this is about Michael, I’m team Raf for life byeeeeee

I am normally not a romance reader nor a novelty tie-in reader, but I fucking love Jane the Virgin so fucking much that I want to read the hell out of this.

fulfilling book riot's 2018 read harder challenge task #10: A romance novel by or about a person of color.
no extry points. just...romance.
you might look at the two-star rating i have given this book and say, “well, yeah - you don’t like romance novels, karen, so obviously you wouldn’t like this.”
and it’s true - i am not a fan of the genre, and lines like When his fingers enclosed hers, Josephine felt a small frisson of heat, and when she looked down, sparks of light seemed to be dancing along their intermingled skin make me squirm, but that’s just a taste thing, and i’ve been schooled around the readers’ advisory block enough to know how to put my personal preferences aside when necessary in order to assess a book’s merits through a filter of pure objectivity.
thing is, it's not (only) the romance aspect that ruined the book for me. the biggest problem is that the book is inconsistent with its own origin story.
quick aside - i do watch Jane the Virgin. it is a cheesy-sweet romance-centric show, not my usual thing, but dana kept bugging me to watch it (i miss you, dana!!!), and once i start something, i see it through, so even though it is not my favorite thing on teevee, it's one of those second-tier shows i watch while i'm peeling vegetables or sewing on buttons or whatnot. (do not ask me about my third-tier shows).
before we discuss the book part of the book, this is what appears on its back cover, next to the “author” photo of actress gina rodriguez:
Snow Falling is a sweeping historical romance based on Jane’s now notorious true story of being accidentally artificially inseminated as a Catholic virgin, becoming the target of the nefarious crime lord Sin Rostro, and ultimately marrying her true love who died tragically young.
these are the events of the show. if this book is meant to be based on those specific events, it has done a poor job of it.
and if it is meant to be the book jane is writing on the show, it is also consistent with that.
correct me if i'm wrong on any of this, and i know you will. on the show, jane’s big breakthrough moment as a writer was when she realized that she could write through her grief and incorporate michael’s death into this romance she was writing about her abuela, and it became both cathartic and gave the story more literary weight.
Snow Falling is supposed to be that book.
it is not. first of all, it’s barely historical - it's very easy to keep forgetting it's supposed to be 1902 - there are no historical details, no context to ground the reader, no sense that life was any different then - for women and immigrants especially. instead, all the characters are more or less as they appear in the show, with different names, occasionally slightly different professions.
one difference is that the sex is consensual and the pregnancy a result of that sex rather than a medical oopsie (which is, i suppose, ONE concession to historical authenticity).
second of all, it is not about her grandparents' relationship at all. it is about a character who is writing a story about her grandparent’s relationship. got that? Jane the Virgin is a show written about a woman writing a book about a character writing a book. the book on the show is about her grandparents, the book published pretending to be the book published on the show is not, and its "whatness" is used as a plot point to propagate another book into existence.
in the book, she is never the target of any crime lord, although her fiancé is.
speaking of that fiancé, the dumbest deviation is that - spoiler alert - michael does NOT die in this book. so in what way is this the book "as seen on Jane the Virgin?" because the blurbs are by characters from the show? because it has the same title?
the only reason this book got published is because of the show, and it doesn't even follow its own rules! you had one job!
a more accurate synopsis would be:
Snow Falling is asweeping historical romance based on Jane’s now notorious true story of being accidentally artificially inseminated as a Catholic virgin, becoming near the target of the nefarious crime lord Sin Rostro, and ultimately marrying her true love who died tragically young.
as a novelty item attached to a show, it's fine - you don't expect great writing from something ghostwritten by someone who was probably forced to shoehorn their writing into a premade mold of expectations and restrictions.
taking that fan-appeal away from it, it's just not a good book, it is both cheesy AND corny
the writing is clunky and unsophisticated; exposition without nuance, dialogue without grace:
"wondered aloud" is particularly vexing.
also, the word “spunky” appears far too many times. gross.
the characters are shockingly superficial - even in a romance-fantasy, no man is going to feel guilty and apologize to his fiancée for feeling conflicted about the fact that she got herself knocked up after letting some other dude take her virginity. the first time he gets to experience sexual bliss with a woman he's loved for two years is after she's already pooped some rich guy's baby out of her stretched-out bliss-hole. that earns you some justified ambivalence in my book. not in this book.
anyone reading this who is unfamiliar with the show would be baffled by the interjections of the om narr which are dumb-charming on the show but completely distracting and unnecessary on the page. it's also another example of how little this project was thought through, because the show's om narr isn't part of jane's book, he's part of the framing device that is presenting jane's life as a telenovela (which encapsulates her writing of the novel and writing of the character who is writing a novel who is writing a novel &turducken etc) and she's not aware that his voice is a thing that exists and so wouldn't have written him into her own book, so unless the big season five reveal is going to be some sort of bullshit
actually, given the chekhov's snow globe in this book, i might not be far off!!!
i wrote (and thought) way more about this than i should have for some forgettable media tie-in novel.
but at least i never let myself get knocked up by a man named Rake.

I wanted to love this so hard. I LOVE Jane the Virgin and thought timing the "real" release of Jane's novel with the fictional release of Jane's novel was borderline genius - I even pre-ordered it. Although I still think it's borderline genius, I'm super disappointed in the book itself. It's essentially the entire storyline of Jane the Virgin (down to seemingly random italicized narrative that isn't really explained). I occasionally read romance novels, so it's not the genre that disappointed me - it's the style. It is juvenile and almost lazy. Arguably, the disappointment is my fault because I was so excited for this, but I still wouldn't recommend it, even to extreme fans of the show.

If anyone watches Jane the Virgin, they know exactly what this book is - Jane and Michael's love story and how it should have ended. This is basically the entire first season of Jane the Virgin summed up into a 240 page novel set in the 1900s. The characters have been renamed and it's set a long time in the past (before accidental artificial insemination could happen) but it's the story we all know and love.
I didn't go into this expecting a mind-blowing story. I went in for those Michael and Jane feels, and that's exactly what I got. The story is a bit simple and cheesy at times, and far from historically accurate but I still enjoyed it.

I love Jane the Virgin, so I just couldn't not own this, even though I'm very firmly, 100% Team Rafael. But, whatever. I wanted to read this . . . and I wish I hadn't. It was my biggest fear going into this that I wouldn't like it because, if I didn't, everytime Jane talked about her book / someone praised it, I'll be cussing at the TV (saying that it's shit). But I read it anyways. JTV is on hiatus right now, so I need some JTV to fill in the gap (I just finished a re-watch). But NO. This was terrible. This didn't have the same charm as the show. It was't funny, heartwarming, NOTHING. It was boring. The characters were all one-dimensional. HATE. Ugh. So now, from the time of finishing this, I will try and distance Jane from this novel and think of it only as a dodgy-ass fanfiction of the ghost writer (it felt like dodgy ass fan fiction) and not Jane's actual book. Because I don't think I can take her, or anyone else, who praises this book seriously. All I can think right now is that Jane's manuscript should've stayed in the bin . . .

3 stars because I love Jane the Virgin (it competes with Parks and Recreation for my all-time favorite show. The parts that were fun for me:
*the narrator from the show popped in and out
*the characters and story lines were recognizable
But, story wise it was not a great romance. I don’t think character development would be enough for a newbie to the story. The conversion of a modern day situation to something that would work when this is set doesn’t have the same effect. It makes it harder to buy in to Josephine & Martin’s (Jane & Michael’s) romance.
So.. I would not recommend to an HR reader but it might be fun for fans of the show.

This book is definitely for fans of the show Jane the Virgin. I honestly think that without the show as a reference, it would be pretty meh. But if you love the show like I do and want more of those characters and to relive the first few seasons, pick this up. It's loads of fun!

Y’all I can’t explain how excited I was for this book.
A book about one of my favourite series?! Jeez.
Sadly enough, I’m so dissapointed.
The main reason why I didn’t like this book was that I was so bored. Also, it’s just the story of Jane the Virgin with a little twist about the pregnancy. That’s the main reason why I don’t truly understand that they changed all the names? I understand that they wanted to pretend that Jane actually wrote the story, but it was so confusing with all those different names and in the story itself Jane (in this book Josephine) also write stories and want to publish her book, so that was a bit complicated.
Also be aware that the main focus of this book is the love triangle and that this was far more irritating than in the series.
Now about the characters. I was happy that the characters had the same personalities as in the series, because that made the show so amazing. Sadly enough the main focus is on Josephine, Martin and Rake. I had the feeling that the other characters didn’t get enough attention and that is something that I truly found dissapointing. I loved Jane’s family so much in the series and I had hoped that, that subject would also really important in the book. Especially the flower story of her abuela. It was so rushed in the book and I think that that’s the most important thing from Jane the Virgin.
After all those negativity I will give you a positive fact about this book. This book has a freaking NARRATOR. When I’ve read it I even read it with the narrator’s voice from the series in my head. That was truly amazing.
So, a little recap: I expected more about this book and I was overall really dissapointed.
Also, I know that I constantly compare this book with the series and that it isn’t truly the goal that this book is actually the story of the series I’m aware of that, but I think that everyone who read this book will compare it with the series, so yeah I do not feel guilty.

This book was super fun to read. It was basically the same as the tv show, but with little changes. It was written like a real telenovela and the audiobook had the same narrator as the TV show!! I loved that so much.

I was so excited to read this book because of how much I LOVE the show. It was a decent book they did miss a couple important aspects that were in the tv show that I wish Jane implemented in her book. I am really glad they included the part about Mateo getting taken by Sin Rostro. Luisa’s intimate relationship with Rose wasn’t talked about at all which I felt like was a semi important part in the series. Would I reread probably not but this satisfied me being able to read Jane Gloriana Villanueva’s novel.

This was very mediocre.
I think that anyone who wants to read this book has to love the series in order to like this.
Honestly, I think that if I hadn't heard this book in audibook I wouldn't have finished it.
It's basically a copy of the TV show and the only thing that is different is the names and the way the baby appears (this part didn't convince me).

My supper/bedtime read was indeed the historical romance written by the fictional character of the popular television series #janethevirgin Two of my secondary students asked I could order it. Like any good teacher, I had to read it to make sure it was high school-friendly.
It was light, fluffy and basically, the entire first season of the show serves as storyline inspiration with a few twists.

This was a fun look at what Jane Gloriana Villanueva's novel would look like. For anyone who doesn't know, Jane is the main character in the TV show Jane the Virgin (which is a PHENOMENAL show, like 100000/10) and over the course of a few seasons she writes a book--this book. I don't really read romance, but I love the show and this book was just chilling at my library, so I thought, why not?
It is essentially a rehash of the main plot points in the first 2 1/2 seasons of the show--so if you haven't seen it, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. MAJOR SPOILERS MY DUDES. The writing is fine, but the characters seemed flat, likely because the author expects the reader to be familiar with the TV show characters that the book characters are based on. To be honest, I expected more sexytimes. Where are the sexytimes???

Normally I would not review a book I did not finish but the reason I didn't make it through this one is weighty enough for an exception.
I love Jane the Virgin and was excited by the idea of a tie-in novel. What I wasn't expecting however was that it would basically just be a novelization of the show, with a few changes made due to the different time period. So if you have watched the show, you will know exactly what is going to happen, which completely kills the tension. I expected the book's quality to lie with the ghostwriter but she does fine. It just needed to make far more deviations, since not only was the book tensionless, but it also makes me question Jane's creativity, since almost nothing is changed from her in world life.

I love Jane the Virgin and was excited by the idea of a tie-in novel. What I wasn't expecting however was that it would basically just be a novelization of the show, with a few changes made due to the different time period. So if you have watched the show, you will know exactly what is going to happen, which completely kills the tension. I was only interested in reading this book because it was a tie-in to the "Jane the Virgin" TV show. The story line is almost an exact copy of the TV show's, just change the time period and how the pregnancy happened. The only part I liked about this book was the ending .

If you like Jane the Virgin, you will like this book. You may not love this book, however. While the narration of the audiobook was wonderful, and I loved the way Simon&Schuster managed to weave the Jane the Virgin plot into a 20th century romance novel set in Miami AND make it believable, I wanted MORE! More details on Jane and Michael's relationship, more details on Jane's relationship with her mother and her abuela, more details on Lucia and Sondra's relationship, more character development in general! The ending was great, and I was seriously gripped and had no idea how things were going to turn out (yes, it's a romance so it has to have a HEA or a HFN, but I had NO IDEA what form that was going to take), but I felt like this novel needed to be a bit longer, a bit more involved. Like the show, I suppose. I wanted more of the emotion and the memories from the show to be translated into this book. Still, it was a great read/listen, and is definitely going in the "Comfort Reads" category for when I need a good book to cheer me up after a bad day.

First off, that dedication shattered my already-broken heart and I'm currently still picking up the pieces.
I am going to be honest, Snow Falling was a little difficult for me to get through. I really wanted to love this. Being a fan of the show definitely influenced the way I went into reading this book as I kept imagining it was set in the present time. I would only realize my mistake when they mentioned the horse carriages. I believe that this book could have been better if it was a bit longer so that the plot and characters had the time to be more developed. At the same time, however, the writing was a bit cringeworthy to me - maybe it’s how historical romances are written? I don’t know. Some of the names did give me a laugh - Rake and Alberta (I live in Alberta haha) and I guess this gave me the happy ever after that I didn't get from the show.

This book sucked so bad and even though it was written for a show I didn’t realize it would be such actual trash. the whole time I was reading it I was praying to my Lord God that this awful experience would be over. And THAT is wHat motivated me to finish this DISASTER. First of all the plot is DUMB. It’s Just the show but worse. Second of all what kind of stupid name for a character is Rake!! That is in fact a GARdening tool. I should’ve known by then that this book was no good. Additionally sorry to Adam but this cover is the worst thing I’ve ever SEEN!! Do you know how embarrassing it was to read this on public transportation?? Even if you like Jane the virgin I wouldn’t recommend reading this but also it was kind of an experience so maybe you should just for giggles. The book cost me $3 but honestly I should’ve been paid to read it. So yeah.
