This is exactly what you think it is. Exactly. If it looks charming and fun, (if you answered "no," you're a sad person and we shouldn't talk further) get it. You won't be disappointed.

There's a fine line when it comes to sustaining my interest in discussions of film, especially horror movies. I'm not into dog piles over guts and gore or plot recaps with nods and bro high-fives. But I also tire of overly academic writing, with the elongating defining of terms, over bloated diction, etc. The former presents the problem of uncritical gushing, the latter egocentric chest-puffing (well, let's face it, both are chest-puffing).

Enter Stacie Ponder, a devout horror movie fan who has earned her chops (!!) with her Final Girl blog, a mixture of humor and insight in the balance I thoroughly appreciate. Ponder presents a sincere love for movies, of throwing yourself into another universe and how it pertains to our own, but also in feeling out the borders of that new realm and all its squishy, slimy depths. This book confronts all the absurdities and smarts and innovation in the Friday the 13th series and lays them out by giving us brief overviews of each installment and color line-drawing depictions of the (numerous) kills in the course of each runtime. Not to mention some Brady Bunching of the Jason iterations and some homage to the weirdo characters who pop up in the course of the series. Ponder is not cruel in her approach, not glorifying in these deaths, but celebrating their contribution to the history of the slasher film and giving us a peek into the ups and downs of trying to keep Jason alive and stabbing.

A must own for any Friday the 13th fan! Admittedly it's a short read, but I know I will revisit it again and again over the years. As "family friendly" as the source material can ever be, the illustrations are hilarious. Love the extras (it's not just the deaths). Finally, the chapter intros offer fair appraisals of the films from someone who obviously loves the franchise, even with all its faults.

A clever satire, Death Count: All of the Deaths in the Friday the 13th Film Series, Illustrated is a fun lark. Author Stacie Ponder chronicles all of the kills of the Friday the 13th series, character by character, film by film (minus crossovers and reboots), along with the survivors and final girls. She also provides a brief overview of each film as to its place and reputation within the fan community. And the crude stick figure-esque drawings, juxtaposed with the violence that they depict, heightens the dark humor. Death Count: All of the Deaths in the Friday the 13th Film Series, Illustrated is a loving tribute to this seminal horror series that looks at it in an entertaining new way.
