January 9, 2018Sadly, this book was a DNF for me.
This book was my first read by Lauren Runow, and it won't be my last, but I will need to wait awhile and forget about how this book made me feel, first. Despite my dismal non-rating, I do "see" what she was trying to write, I just didn't "feel" it. I have purchased another of her books, so I know I need to make some time to check out more of her writing, but this one left a very sour taste in my mouth; aggravatingly so. Since I didn't come to the ending naturally, it will simply be a DNF for me without a starred rating. I did, however, speak with a friend that read it and she did confirm my suspicion on the plot. This was a no-go for me before I received the spoiler, so my review is completely unbiased in that aspect.
I am bothered by the lack of build up in every single aspect of this book, from their meeting, to the reconnection, to the sex. It was virtually non existent and that made for a storyline that was choppy, characters that were awkward, and a chick that acted like a crazy stalker. I got all this in the first 15% and it just didn't work out well for me. I felt like there were some parts that really worked, the description was actually there, but then there would be nothing. Three actions in one sentence, without any elaboration at one point, then multiple paragraphs explaining how he had sex with her in another part. It felt like there were pieces pasted together at times, and it didn't have any flow or continuity. It was really difficult to get into a groove with the way this one was written.
I had a VERY hard time with the heroine. With Mackenzie fawning over Connor her entire life, it became a slightly embarrassing, yet pathetic excuse, for all of her actions and the things she did. She looked desperate from the very beginning of the book. Even after they've grown up and moved on, pushing as hard as she was, throwing herself at him just to get noticed, it made me cringe for her by the way she was acting. Literally, the entire time I was reading with a "what thah" pinch on my face. I didn't understand any of it, mostly because we had ZERO build up. NOW, after knowing the plot spoiler and the ending of the book, it could have been handled differently to avoid the awkwardness while still providing the excitement and allowing me to warm up to her. I just couldn't. She was seriously.....just, yeah.
And Connor "granting her a wish" felt like he was tragically doing her a favor by sleeping with her. I was literally disgusted at the entire situation. It felt like an honest wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am kinda moment between them and she was so lucky he took the time to "do this" for her. I just didn't connect with either of them. I got very slimy feelings from him and very immature feelings from her.
Soooo, elephant in the room: I feel like I need to say that the sex club literally plays an obligatory 'meeting' part and that's it. It's like the token sex club addition to a book nowadays. Nothing else of value was there. Nothing was added to the storyline by that. And the problem I had with it was that it wasn't explained AT ALL, yet again. It wasn't introduced. It wasn't built up. It was immediately accepted, so that was really awkward to witness....almost forced.
Needless to say, this did not work on ANY level for me at all. I'm so sad because I was hoping to hear a new voice that I could follow and brag about. That just didn't happen with this book.

Eu estou achando que virei o ano com pé esquerdo nesse mundo dos livros. Meu coração deve ter ficado em 2017.
Não ando gostando de quase nada dos que ando lendo.
Por exemplo, esse livro aqui... tinha tudo pra ser “o livro”, devido ao enredo e tema abordado, tinha potencial pra me deixar emocionalmente abalada, com lágrimas e lágrimas rolando e simplesmente não aconteceu.
Os personagens não tiveram profundidade que eu esperava, não foram bem elaborados e desenvolvidos. Não consegui me conectar.
A história si se desenrolou de forma rápida e com vários pulos de tempo, situações importantes que deveriam ser mais descritas, mostrando como Mackenzie e Connor estavam enfrentando e sentindo naqueles momentos.
E teve um momento importantíssimo ao qual tenho que ser bem sincera, me irritou muito, porque achei de tamanha irresponsabilidade e egoísmo de ambas as partes.
Entendi o desejo, a ânsia e o sonho, porém não concordo pois não era uma coisa banal pra ser decidida sem pensar muito nas consequências.
Não foi uma leitura tão prazerosa e só finalizei porque queria saber o desfecho.

GOD DAMNIT, Lauren!!! I love you and I hate you right now. LOL This book was so much more than what I thought it was going to be when I started reading it. I went into this book blind - I didn't read the blurb and just dove right in. And let me tell you, even after finishing this, I went back and read the blurb and it still won't prepare you for everything and to be honest, I love that the blurb doesn't give the story away. But geezus, this book had me in a ball of emotions.
I am going to say this now and get it out of the way. If this book came with any type warning as to what is going to possibly happen in this book, the whole plot of this book would have been ruined. So any reader out there that states they wish they had an inkling of what was going to happen needs to be quiet; giving away any portions of a book because the reader needs "to be prepared" for what is going to happen is ridiculous. You need to go into this book without any knowledge of what is to come - enjoy the "suspense" of what the author is writing. It just makes the book that so much more enjoyable and meaningful.
I am writing this review with tears streaming down my face, even a day after I finished this book; I just can't hold them in. This book broke me, it really did. I applaud Lauren for writing such a heart wrenching book, but I want to "yell" at her too for making me feel so much. LOL But in all honesty, I love when an author is able to pull such strong emotions from me - I was completely vested in these characters and their story; they became like family to me.
I won't say much about this book except is it soooo much more than the blurb. Kenzie is one hell of a strong woman; she's a god damn pillar of strength. I just can't fathom being in her shoes, but she definitely made me want to be just as strong as she. And Connor - that man is one in a million. There are no others like him. This story is heart wrenching yet so beautiful. I can't say enough wow's to express my feelings on this book.
Something I feel that is worth mentioning too, is the songs that Lauren mentions throughout this book. Many of the books I read, songs are always mentioned in them and at times I do look them up, and sometimes I just ignore it altogether. However, with this book, these songs were a very important part of the story and I felt moved to look up the lyrics to them and even listen to them (when I could) while reading this book. And wow are they even more impactful than I anticipated.
And that's all you are getting from me on that. Just be prepared for more when you read this book. The story is so beautiful but will make you cry. Once you start this book, you won't be able to stop reading it. I finished this book while I was at work because I had to know how it all played out. And yes, I was ugly crying so hard, I had to leave my office to compose myself.
Lauren's message behind this story is something we all take for granted daily. Live life to it's fullest, each day is a blessing. Never take for granted what you already have; it's not always greener on the other side.
Lauren, you are a diamond in the rough that everyone needs to know about. Your writing is impeccable. Your characters are so real and their stories are amazing. And I love that write not only contemporary but erotic/bdsm novels. I can't wait to read more from you in the future.

The New Year is starting off with lots of new-to-me-authors, and I’m liking the way things are clicking thus far as I dig into the stack of TBRs and new ARCs.
I went into this story completely blind knowing nothing about this author or any of her backlog of books. I was totally unprepared for the unexpected that lie ahead. Lauren Runow’s new stand-alone introduces Mackenzie Thomas and Connor Hayden in a best friend’s older brother trope with a side of so much more.
Don't let that cover fool you -- this is not Gene Kelly's "singing in the rain" happy dance. Yeah, you might get a glimpse of a slow dance with raindrops falling all around, along with a few kisses shared behind a big red umbrella, but your heart is going to break when the cloudy days arrive, and downpours leak from your eyes on those stormy days. I've read my share of similar plots, and although there were parts I found equally as emotional here, it still didn't kick butt and wreck me emotionally – or earn top billing either -- Bright Side, by Kim Holden remains the best and my absolute favorite.
Here, the opening scenes threw me off-kilter and I didn't much care for Mackenzie's sneaky masked setup for a one-night stand with Connor. Nothing good ever starts with a dirty trick being played on an unsuspecting soul. But then shortly thereafter Connor disappointed me with the way he responded to finding out who his hookup had been. Beginning with those first several encounters, it was like a wall went up between me and them, and I never fully allowed myself to be completely won over by either Connor or Mackenzie. I’m not totally without sympathy and feelings, so I was caught up in their pain and sadness as the story moved forward. Even so, I remained less taken by them as individuals and more enthralled with the overall story.
Dual points of view from both Mackenzie and Connor allow readers to peek into the inner thoughts of both characters. I’m a reader who favors more than one POV – the more information you’re allowed, the better. And frankly, I just love getting inside a guy’s mind.
I don’t want to go into many details from here on out because – well, you know why. SPOILERS – and I don’t like them. Finding out the details all on your own is what makes reading so special. Take that away and there’s nothing to look forward to discovering.
The blurb does throw you off a bit. This really isn’t a second chance at love story. And it doesn’t have the typical happily-ever-after either. There is indeed a reconnection and it involves a girl in love with her best friend’s older brother. The relationship is very fast-paced – feels insta-lovish (is that even a word?).
However, nothing seemed to diminish the romance once it had begun. It is beautiful, emotional, powerful and sexy, too. Connor is certainly prime boyfriend material. I questioned his feelings at first, but he made a true believer out of me without too much difficulty. He was sincere, noble and magnanimous. Actually, both Connor and Mackenzie ended up being a special couple – and I truly believed in their love and devotion for each other. They share some very special moments - ones I won't soon forget. You’ll want to keep the Kleenex nearby.
TIME OUT FOR A LITTLE RANTING . . .
The writing did not blow me away. At times it seemed to lose its way. My two biggest gripes while reading this book centered on the number of typos and the confusion in properly setting out the age difference between Connor and his sister, Tracy and Mackenzie, along with substantively identifying secondary characters that popped up without warning here and there with no clearly-stated identity.
The author missed the mark and lost me completely as she referred to the ages of the characters at various stages in the saga, and her math was wrong on the age difference between Connor and Mackenzie and Tracy. It stated in black and white that he was 28 and Mackenzie and Tracy were 25, but more than several times the difference was set out for readers as being four years – not three! If it had only been a one-time slip, I might overlook it. Then Connor mentions that the last time he saw MacKenzie was eight years ago and that she was fifteen. Okay, 15 + 8 = 23, right? Well, obviously the author doesn’t think so because, like I said above, it’s stated in black and white that MacKenzie is 25! Simple math!
Then there were those former girlfriends “Sarah” and “Amy” whose identities were never fully established. They were just haphazardly tossed in helter-skelter. I never did figure out who Connor’s “The One” was through high school and college. Who is SARAH? Was she “The One”? “Sarah” came out of nowhere and her name was used only one time with no explanation. I kid you not! And, then there is AMY . . . but I’m not sure exactly how she fits into the picture. Did she cheat on Connor with Alan, or did she cheat on Alan with Connor? There was nothing to ever indicate that Alan and Amy were presently together, married or otherwise. And Connor and Alan have several encounters in present day time sharing beers and because Alan is a doctor, he is a great help to Connor with questions he needs answers to. But at the end of the book, Amy and Alan have had a baby girl that was born just a few months ago. WTH? It made absolutely no sense to me.
You think you’re confused. Color me doubly so, because not only did the author confuse me, but so did the reviews. Not a single reviewer has mentioned this problem – nope everyone raved about perfect writing.
This book really needed a final proofread to knock out some simple editing problems and clarify secondary characters before being published.
END OF LITTLE RANT
This author is very capable at expressing deep feelings with her words and left a message well-worth consideration. The nature of the subject matter shredded my heart and left me questioning: Why do we worry so much about the small stuff when life might end with your next breath? Make the most of all that is offered. Laugh, love, & treat others like you want to be treated – and don’t regret the chances you didn’t take.

The writing did not blow me away. At times it seemed to lose its way. My two biggest gripes while reading this book centered on the number of typos and the confusion in properly setting out the age difference between Connor and his sister, Tracy and Mackenzie, along with substantively identifying secondary characters that popped up without warning here and there with no clearly-stated identity.
The author missed the mark and lost me completely as she referred to the ages of the characters at various stages in the saga, and her math was wrong on the age difference between Connor and Mackenzie and Tracy. It stated in black and white that he was 28 and Mackenzie and Tracy were 25, but more than several times the difference was set out for readers as being four years – not three! If it had only been a one-time slip, I might overlook it. Then Connor mentions that the last time he saw MacKenzie was eight years ago and that she was fifteen. Okay, 15 + 8 = 23, right? Well, obviously the author doesn’t think so because, like I said above, it’s stated in black and white that MacKenzie is 25! Simple math!
Then there were those former girlfriends “Sarah” and “Amy” whose identities were never fully established. They were just haphazardly tossed in helter-skelter. I never did figure out who Connor’s “The One” was through high school and college. Who is SARAH? Was she “The One”? “Sarah” came out of nowhere and her name was used only one time with no explanation. I kid you not! And, then there is AMY . . . but I’m not sure exactly how she fits into the picture. Did she cheat on Connor with Alan, or did she cheat on Alan with Connor? There was nothing to ever indicate that Alan and Amy were presently together, married or otherwise. And Connor and Alan have several encounters in present day time sharing beers and because Alan is a doctor, he is a great help to Connor with questions he needs answers to. But at the end of the book, Amy and Alan have had a baby girl that was born just a few months ago. WTH? It made absolutely no sense to me.
You think you’re confused. Color me doubly so, because not only did the author confuse me, but so did the reviews. Not a single reviewer has mentioned this problem – nope everyone raved about perfect writing.
This book really needed a final proofread to knock out some simple editing problems and clarify secondary characters before being published.

This author is very capable at expressing deep feelings with her words and left a message well-worth consideration. The nature of the subject matter shredded my heart and left me questioning: Why do we worry so much about the small stuff when life might end with your next breath? Make the most of all that is offered. Laugh, love, & treat others like you want to be treated – and don’t regret the chances you didn’t take.

Last Chance is the kind of book that will have you putting tissue after tissue to your face, wiping away countless tears as you find yourself invested in the story. It's romantic, it's a bit sexy, and it features a gripping and emotional best friend's brother storyline. There's also a lot of angst, the kind that gets to you and leaves you wondering where a happy ending could possibly come from. Lauren Runow tells the love story of Mackenzie and Connor like a fairytale. There's a bucket list, there's hopes and dreams, and there's moments every girl dreams of sharing with her knight in shining armor. It's cliche, but in a cute way that definitely puts it in the contemporary romance category. I read it in one sitting, expecting the ending, but appreciating how Lauren Runow got to it.
I had some issues with continuity in Last Chance and maybe I'm too much of a stickler, but tiny things that don't fit in really bother me. When Connor is doing over the top, sweet things some of the opportunities to tie them together were missed. Mackenzie starts out as a very strong, confident character and I felt like as the book continued her voice became very weak. She comes across as selfish and despite her personal issues there was so much opportunity for her not to be. On top of that, the relationship and book is rushed, finding us moving from a highly sexual moment to an insta-love moment to the rest of their lives together.Last Chance is at times over the top, but beyond my personal annoyances it is a sweet book with a very romantic story. It is, without the angst, what dreams truly are made of.

You'll run the full gamut with all of the feels in this book. Ms. Runow does not pull any punches in Last Chance, wielding words like a knuckle taped ninja. I was fortunate enough to screen an early edition...and wow, I can still remember the hot and saucy bits and the emotional and gut wrenching scenes, too. 4 "Keep the Kleenex handy" stars.

Arc provided by author for honest review. Wow wow wow, I was not expecting this story to hit so hard. But it sure I did. Not only did I devour this book in a day. I also added some great music to my play list. When I look back at Connor I see a hero and one of the most amazing men. Last chance reminds me so much of a walk to remember though are completely different and in some ways the Same. You will see what I mean once you read it on release day, January 9th!!

I normally write my review right after I finish a book. But with this one, I had to sit on it and think for a day. I had to try and clear my head, and put back together my heart, because it completely tore me apart. My heart was left in what felt like a million pieces, and through put the day after, I was still unable to put it back together. So here a day later, I sit to try and write a review, while my heart is still so broken.
I wasn’t waiting for this book to be anything like it was. When you look at the cover, you think it’s gonna be sweet. When you read the blurb, you think it’s gonna be hot. I mean, come on now, it’s a best friend’s brother book, and we all know those are killer hot! And this one was all those things, incredibly sweet, and super hot. But it was also devastating beyond belief.
Mackenzie has had a crush on her best friend’s brother since she laid eyes on him at the age of ten. That crush turned into being in love with him. Which then turned into heartache because she knew she could never have him. But when her live turns upside down, she finally has a reason to go for what she wants most, and that’s Connor. Even if she has to be with him in a way where he doesn’t know its her. She’s still living out her fantasy and checking off a box on her list. But never in her wildest fantasies or dreams, did she think he would get more than one night. More than one box check off which includes him.
Connor has had his heart broken a few times, so having a girlfriend is the last thing he wants. His life is centered around his work. He works more than he plays, and he is okay with that. At least he thought he was. After spending one night with a mysterious woman, he can't get her off his mind. And when he finds out that the woman he can't seem to stop thinking about, his little sister’s best friend, he about loses his mind. He lets the thought of her age, and that she is so close to his sister, stand in the way. But he quickly realizes that the need to have her again outweighs all the other reasons.
For how fast and high she brings his life, she quickly brings him to his knees. Love isn’t always supposed to be easy or fair, but it's worth it.
This story was such an amazing, gut-wrenching, beautifully devastating love story that will stick with me for a while. I can count on one hand the number of books that have made me cry. This is one of the tops. This is one of the ones that made me cry the most and the longest. I was utterly ruined by this book. And that takes a lot to do.
I was so blown away by this story that I have already started recommending it to my book friends. This is a love story that needs to be shared, devoured, and appreciated. I hope if you read it, you love it and break as much as I have.

Let me start with this...no matter what Lauren Runow writes, I will read it. I don’t care what it is. Grocery list, a check list on what chores she needs to do. Whatever it is I will be more than happy to read it.
Right now while writing this I’m not happy with her. She broke me. I’m broken inside. My heart aches and I’m not sure how I’m going to repair it. I don’t know where to begin to explain my feelings about Last Chance. Let me explain the emotions I went through.

I was talking to a fellow blogger/friend, and we both agree that we love Lauren’s writing and how she seems to get us to connect so well with the characters. It’s as if they are a part of us. Like they are our friends. This is why I love reading. Thanks to authors who write books like this.

"I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance." - Garth Brooks and Tony Arata
Prepare yourselves for one emotional ride! Last Chance is going to give you all the feels! You will definitely need to keep a box of tissues nearby while reading this one, but you will also hopefully be left feeling fulfilled by the journey of the characters.
Connor and Mackenzie's story is both heartbreaking and uplifting. There were plenty of swoony and tender moments, but also times when I didn't think my heart could take much more. The overall story is similar to others I have read before, but I still enjoyed it thanks to the wonderful writing and characters. Everyone from Connor and Machenzie's families, to their co-workers, and roommates were all wonderful additions to the story. Throw in the forbidden romance/best friend's sibling trope and you've got one hell of a book!

Two emotional reads on the bounce was probably not the best of ideas, but I'm a sucker for punishment and boy did Lauren Runow punish me. This was incredibly emotional, and while I have read similar themed books, this was definitely one of the better ones. The tears were plentiful, my poor heart was destroyed, my tear ducts are empty and that in itself is testament to the emotions that this author evoked.
This book lifted me high, took me way down low and then modestly put me back together as the author took me on a roller coaster of emotions. While I had an inkling what the secret was, it was no less hard to hear when all was revealed.
Mackenzie was living the fairytale, her best friends brother is the man that she has crushed on since she was in her early teens and when the crush becomes a reality and the feeling is mutual you cannot help but cheer for our incredibly sweet heroine. But, even fairy tales have their evil nemesis and while this one comes in a different guise it is no less evil and destructive.
While this book takes its time to really get going, once it hits its stride there is no stopping it. Connor was a remarkable hero and one that I took into my heart from the very beginning and he only commanded more of it the more this story progressed. Loved this one!!

Lauren started writing this book right around a difficult time of year for me. With my own life experiences it was very easy to connect to Mackenzie and what she was going through. Almost to the point where I couldn’t keep reading. It was all too real and I had lived it myself. While alpha/beta reading I found myself giving Lauren tid-bits of my personal experience that only someone who lived it could understand. With these extra tips Lauren transformed this book into something so real, felt by many of us. You will without a doubt connect to this book.
The characters really come into themselves about half way through. The story intensifies and becomes reminiscent to A walk to remember. (A modern day, sexy adult version.)
I read Connor like Cole and there was no way for me not to. I know Lauren originally intended to have Last Chance be Cole’s story and I felt loyalty to read it as that. For those of you who have read Lauren’s Black Widow and Falling into the Black you’ll totally understand.
I would recommend this to any romance lover. Just know the book will be intense but you’ll love every bit of it!

When I was offered the opportunity to read Last Chance, I signed up without looking at the blurb because I usually love this author’s work. As my first read of the New Year, it gives me so much hope for what’s to come from here on out. When you go into a book blind, you have no idea what feelings and emotions a the story will invoke. Well, this one invoked them ALL! This story’s romance factor was off the charts. Music plays such a huge role, and who doesn’t love music? Prepare yourself for an amazing soundtrack along with a beautifully, tragic story. Connor is more than a girl can ask for. Honestly, you won’t meet one character in this story that you won’t fall in love with. Your heart and stomach will flutter and ache. You’ll smile so much it hurts. Maybe if you’re like me you’ll be a little angry, but it’s so bittersweet that you can’t stay mad for long. This was everything I didn’t even know I needed. You won’t forget this book. That’s a promise. Excuse me while I go cry myself to sleep now.

She sets in motion to live the life she wants to experience in the short time she has left. Her sights are set on Connor & she finds a way to spend one amazing night with him. But she is careful to make it happen so that Connor doesn't realize it who he is with. Yet Connor realizes immediately that there is something special about the mystery woman he spent an amazing sex fill night with. As the story evolves, the truth comes out about their night together & they find a way to forge forward. But life isn't perfect & it has a way of even making the best of situations fall apart eventually even with a smile on your face.
I haven't cried this hard reading a book in a long time. This isn't normally the kind of thing I look for when choosing a book to read but I am very grateful I took the time to read this story. Because for a small window of time the two main characters get to live the life of a fairy tale knowing all along that it will end. This is my first Lauren Runow book & I look forward to reading many more of her stories...... even if they make me cry again.

Received an ARC for an honest opinion.
I feel like they needed to give a little bit more insight in the beginning. Only a few chapters in and there are a few hints here and there that there is something wrong with Mackenzie, but they don't say what and it feels more annoying than anything. It was pretty quick love a bit unrealistic if he hadn't noticed her in that way when they were younger. But they also have his last serious girlfriend 2 different names which bugged me; Sarah and Amy. With her illness the story seems pretty unrealistic, I don't know if I even want to finish it but I also don't know how the author is going to end the story if she lives or dies. There are definitely tear jerking moments. It's a cute story, I didn't start really crying till the last few chapters. The love and support in this story is truly amazing.

I am absolutely blown away my this story. We start off with a light hearted storyline with Kenzie her best friend Tracy and Tracy’s older brother Connor. Jumping ahead a few years and we’re given breadcrumbs to a heart wrenching story that feels so real there’s no way you won’t find yourself reaching for a tissue more often then not. I won’t dare give any spoilers away but you MUST READ this book. As I try and write this review my heart breaks all over again as I think back to everything I’ve read, I personally haven’t experienced anything relatable but through this story I feel as though I have like I’ve been right there by their side the entire time. There were moments I had to stop reading because my eyes were blurry from all the damn tears I was crying. When an author can reach down deep inside a reader’s heart and have you speechless you know you have one helluva story. One click, move Last Chance to the top of your TBR list and be prepared for one beautifully broken journey. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

My heart feels like it was going to grow outside my chest on one hand, and on the other it feels shattered. I finished this book late, and couldn’t sleep. I also struggles with how to rate it. I was just so damn effected by this book! I can’t say as much as I’d like, other than it was absolutely worth reading, and the tears shed. The author set out to deliver a certain kind of read; I believe she did so, and then some...bittersweet is an understatement. Connor Hayden, has my heart forever...

This book is so unique because it's an erotic ugly-cry book. Sounds crazy right? It is and it's absolutely BRILLIANT! Mackenzie is creating a bucket list on her life and the one thing she has always wanted was her best friend's brother. Deciding that fate was taking too long, she puts her self in the most outrageous position to get his attention. let me tell you - she gets him to notice her and it's HOT!!! These two embark on a whirlwind of a love story and that's only the tip of the ice berg for these two. What starts out as kinky and fun turns into something deep and beautiful. Thisis a must read for everyone!

Absolutely loved this bestfriend's brother love story! So emotional this story was! Mackenzie & Connor made a beautiful couple! The way they got together,to all the things Connor did for Mackenzie! Worth the read!

WOW!!!! What an incredibly written book that tackles a very tough situation. I instantly fell in love with Connor and Mackenzie and cheered them on to their version of a happily ever after. I might have cursed out Lauren Runow as I was reading this book along with laughing, sighing during the swoon worthy moments and crying my eyes out during the sad times. The words from Garth Brook's song The Dance ring so true for this story "I could have missed the pain But I'd have to miss the dance". Sometimes the pain is worth the dance and I think that has never been more true than in this story. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.

This is the most devastating book I have read in a very long while but that being said it is also one of the most beautifully tragic books that I have ever read. The things that Connor and Mackenzie are up against is no small obstacles (think terms of forever) but they were still able to find their love story and their forever with Mia. If you are looking for a book that will gut you and then give you peace, this is book for you!

Based on the book description, I figured that Last Chance would be a slightly sad, best friend's brother/childhood crush romance. I could not have been more wrong. Yes, it is a childhood crush/best friend's brother story, but it goes way beyond slightly sad to down-right heartbreaking, and begs the question, how much would you be willing to do for the love of your life?
Mackenzie has been in love with Connor since she was 10, but he never saw her as anything more than his little sister's best friend. Mackenzie seeks Connor out on purpose one night, wanting to cross off a fantasy item from her bucket list. I didn't love how she lied to Connor about her identity, but I get why she did that, in relation to the bigger picture of this story.
Connor, meanwhile, can't get the mysterious woman out of his mind, and freaks out when he pieces it together over a family dinner at his parents' house. And after realizing that the woman he was so enthralled with was Mackenzie, he not only offers her a repeat, but even helps her get an apartment in his building. From there, they strike up a friendship and Connor begins to see Mackenzie as a woman he's captivated by -- not just his little sister's friend.
But Mackenzie is keeping a major secret from him, one that could destroy the love they share. But when Connor finally learns the truth, he steps up in the most beautiful way, determined to make Mackenzie's life as complete and happy as he realizes she's made him. What unfolds from there is a full of joy and tears, love that knows no bounds and unimaginable heartbreak.
Last Chance left me sobbing. I wish I knew beforehand that it was going to be a tear-jerker, but I don't remember reading that part of the description beforehand. Connor and Mackenzie are a couple that will stick with me for a long time. Their tale was purely beautiful in all of it's heartbreak, and I love how this line from Garth Brooks' The Dance is an underlying theme of the book: I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance. For their dance was quite memorable.
