An Alpha Bound by Duty
Bear shifter Callum Strathorn has a job to do. With his father’s health declining, it’s up to Callum to take over as Mayor of Bearden.

When Leah Arden crashes her car near Bearden, Callum leads the first responders. He pulls the lovely woman from the wreckage, but as her wits return, she sees things that humans should never see. Forbidden things, like a mysterious town and a man shifting into a bear.

Callum has no choice. To protect his town and his clan, he keeps Leah captive in Bearden while he figures out damage control. He soon finds himself with a fiery and furious female on his hands. And if things couldn’t get worse, the stubborn and aggravatingly sexy woman smells and tastes just like his fated mate.

A Woman on the Run
Leah Arden lives a life haunted by secrets. She can't stay in one place for long or her past will catch up with her. With nowhere to turn, she doesn’t trust anyone, not until she meets Bearden’s gruff but handsome mayor.

Callum’s slow, sexy smile and quiet strength make her yearn for more. But when he lays down the law and forces her to remain in Bearden, she grows desperate to find a way to escape. Even if that means betraying the one man who makes her want to put down roots.

As Leah’s secrets unravel, the danger grows, looming over her and all of Bearden. Callum's enemies are looking for weakness, and he handed them one on a silver platter. Can the town’s alpha keep his people safe, especially the woman who is fated to be his?

~~~
Step into the world of Shifting Destinies, where the men and women you meet might just be a little more than human. Their towns are protected by magic, and their hearts are open and ready for love. But watch your step — more than darkness lurks in the shadows.
Refreshing sweet/suspense shifter romance.
World build:
Great! Clean and clear world including magical properties, various species, and rules of engagement/lifestyles.
Storyline:
Detailed but not overly done. Nice little suspense to it with a few surprises here and there. Would have liked a bit more of an edgy tone, I think this world could have pulled it off.
FMC:
Leah is a pretty cool human with an interesting backstory. I did have some trouble with her...at times I did find her a little predictable and boring, but those times were very few.
MC:
Callum was a bit more thoughtful/sentimental than I am used too. He had issues taking over as alpha and mayor. Most dominate alpha types step up immediately when their time comes but he kinda drug his feet. This made him come off a bit weak IMO.
Secondary characters:
There are some hot guys introduced that I can not wait to see in the future! Great secondary characters!
All in all, pretty darn good read and looking forward to book 2!
Happy reading,
DD 💕
Leah left her boyfriend who she got fed up with cheating on her. But before she left she took a map that she thought would lead her to some kind of treasure. She wasn't sure about the map until Jamin, her ex boyfriend came after her for the map. He had been stalking her movements and almost broke down her motel door at one point. He was angry and she wasn't sure just how far he and his cronies would go once they finally caught up to her so she had to keep moving.
Callum was the leader of his town and was also a bear shifter. Humans weren't allowed in his town because humans could never learn of shifters, it would be too dangerous for his people. But when her car crashes and he pulls her from the crash, he has to bring her into town after one of his people shifts in front of her.
Once she finds out what Callum and most of the town really is, Callum has no choice but to make her stay because a human can't be trusted not to tell everyone else that shifters exist. But Leah is running from her ex, who turns out to be worst than she imagined and brings all kinds of danger right to her doorstep. Callum knows that Leah is his mate so he wants to protect her as well as keep her but she's keeping so many secrets that it might be too dangerous for him and his people to keep her around.
This story had a huge twist and I loved it, never saw that coming at all. This was such a fun read and I liked getting to know some of the secondary characters who I hope will pop up in this series because now I want to read more.
"Morning," he murmured against her lips.
"Mmm." The drawn out, satisfied sigh was the only response she could muster. The man had f*cked the linguistic skills out of her brain.
While I absolutely love this quote, this novel wasn't my favorite in the series so far. Callum was a great hero--strong, protective, and a great if reluctant leader--while Leah was a sort of anti-heroine. She was constantly making the wrong decisions, trusting the wrong people, not telling Callum pertinent information, and I grew more and more frustrated with her each time. She and Callum both had valid reasons for keeping the other at arm's length, but they continued to dance around each other in a cloud of sexual tension that slowly evolved from need to want. The second half of the novel definitely stepped up the stakes with added danger, unseen threats, misunderstandings, and undeniable lust. Overall, I still really enjoyed this addition to one of my new favorite series, and I'm even more excited to continue on after how this novel ended!
My Callum, bear shifter and protector of Bearden..
Could have been a good book except for the heroine Leah.
I hate heroines who are deceitful and lie, even by omission, especially when their lack of truth causes others to be hurt. Then have the gall to act the wounded party and believe saying sorry is enough.
By the end I was totally sick of Leah and her actions. These sort of people spoil my reading pleasure.
Callum deserved so much better but his actions also come under scrutiny as he tries to deny that Leah is his mate then covers for her bad decisions.
I have come to the conclusion this author is not for me. This is the 5th book I have read and I disliked them all. Thank goodness for KU, at least I have not had to pay to read this.
Blah. I skimmed through it a lot even tho the story was halfway decent. I just hate it when guys are assholes about the mate bond and when the FMC betrays her love interest bc she's "misunderstood." I'll give the next book in the series a try bc the writing was good... maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this kind brand of plot.
The couple: Callum and Leah
Romance genre: shifters
Part of a series: Yes (Shifters of Bear's Den)
Length: 330 pages
Plot: Back to Bearden! Callum is acting mayor (used to be a firefighter), and Leah crashed her car (well, was crashed into), so the bears brought her into town. She wasn't supposed to be there, as a human, but one of the bears had shifted in front of her, so they really had no choice. Once she's there, her life continues to spiral out of control. There's an attraction between Callum and Leah, but neither of them can decide whether or not act on it. Leah's ex, who is a really bad guy, is trying to get something valuable back from Leah, and threatens her, and eventually everyone in town.
Character development: Leah doesn't really trust anyone, and with good reason. Her last ex did a number on her. Partially because of that, she makes a really bad decision that leads to a crisis in the town. Then she has to confess to Callum, and that almost does their relationship in. Callum is a little prickly, but partially because he's dealing with an issue with his father. They're not unlikeable; in fact, they're pretty human (well, at least one of them is).
Would I read more from this author/in this series: Yes
Next book in the series: Dangerous Mate
This book is all over the place. It was difficult to get through. This book has some problems.
1. Sentence structure. At times I had difficulty following what the author was trying to say due to poor sentence structure. It was as if she wanted to write exactly how a human being speaks and unfortunately that doesn’t translate very well to the page.
2. Misspelled words!!!
3. Logic. There are some logic problems with human behavior in this book. The heroine has known the mayor for all but five minutes and she’s already jealous over him when she thinks about him with other women. The woman was just in a terrible accident. Logically speaking that doesn’t make any sense. This is not the appropriate emotional response in a situation where she was almost murdered.
4. Exposition. Way way way way too much. The rule is “show don’t tell” but I guess that rule does not apply in this book.
There are other issues such as pacing and story structure.
I definitely do not recommend this book which is sad because I was really interested.
This is a good story. I love Callum, he carried the story for me. Leah, I couldn't connect with and didn't like her from the beginning. She was untrustworthy and shady. She is not worthy of an Alpha, no matter what his Bear says.
The story moves at a good clip and keeps you entertained, there are some characters who toss a wrench in things, but those issues are dealt with. The story is a quick read and there is magic in this book that is different than other shifter books, which makes it unique.
My Opinion
I was reading all of these 4 and 5 star reviews and wondered did I download the wrong book because the book I read was not that good. As a matter of fact I couldn't even finish it I stopped at chapter 13. The heroine was a wreck. I couldn't like or feel sorry for her no matter how hard I tried. She was no good just like this book was no good. I do not recommend.
Reviewed at Shifter Haven
“Forbidden Mate” is an intriguing story that easily drew me into a world of magic, fae, vampires… but mostly shifters. There is world building in this first story, there has to be in order to make sense of this diverse world. Yet the information needed to understand why Bearden even exists is easily caught up in the telling of Callum and Leah’s story through dialogue and narrative. There is not what I would consider an information dump and then moving on with the story… but there is a lot of magic, history, tradition, and danger to this world, so there is often a lot to take in. I was quite comfortable here and I’m anxious to learn more about this magical place that is hidden from human eyes, for the most part.
The cover description provides everything you’d need to know to take a chance on “Forbidden Mate”. What it doesn’t tell you is how easily you’ll “get” this world and its hidden dangers. Callum is a strong character with such heavy burdens on his shoulders right now. Probably the last thing he needed was for a human to discover his enclave, but since she did, due in part to one out of control shifter’s actions now he has to make sure that she stays. Staying is not something Leah does easily, or ever. I liked both Callum and Leah, but I do have to admit that Leah had to prove herself to me on more than one occasion. I understood why she acts as she does, but there were moments when her decisions were frustrating to me… and certainly to Callum.
We will meet most of Callum’s clan in this first story. Enough to have a feel for these men, but the main focus is Callum’s difficulties in a shift of power, keeping an out of control shifter in line and figuring out what to do with a woman he’s sure is his mate, but she’s also trouble in one feisty, beautiful package. There is a villain to loathe, fast-paced actions, steamy moments, some chuckles and some bad decisions made. It all flows together in a story that captured my attention, kept me engaged and wanting more from this small, hidden, magical town. Now I’m officially hooked and I’ll be enjoying myself with the rest of this series. I love binge reading, where I can immerse myself in a world without a break. I would not hesitate to recommend “Forbidden Mate” to any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader who enjoys a really good story, likable, believable characters, danger, mystery and the sweet joy of falling in love. I had a very good time in this world, and I’m looking forward to returning.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
This is an excellent shifter story. It is well-written and has an intriguing plot with plenty of twists and turns to make it an exciting read. Jamin has been trying to open the veil between shifters and believes his plan will work; what he doesn’t take into account is Leah’s changed status which eventually contributes to his downfall. But the time for hiding is now over and change is coming to Bearden. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Leah has dated Jamin on and off for years; it had been a petty move to steal the map and go after his buried treasure, but she had been so angry at his latest indiscretion; he thought he had been clever keeping it a secret from her, but she knew. Not content with just chasing after Leah, Jamin runs her off the road; Leah thought the map was just hidden money or treasure, never expecting Jamin to try and kill her to get it back. Leah has survived the wreck, but who has scared Jamin away? Leah has somehow found her way into the Bearden enclave; all Callum wants to do is to get her out of the car and send her on her way back into human territory, but there is no hiding the scent of Leah’s fear. She had seen one of them shift. Callum is Bearden’s Fire Chief, but when his father becomes ill, he takes over as Mayor, as well as all the inherent problems of the Clan; insubordination in the ranks, a human in enclave territory, an unusual visit from the Fae and a challenge for Alpha. Callum wants to settle down and find a mate; his animal has been restless lately, even more than usual. Callum’s bear recognises Leah as its Mate; but what of Leah’s secrets, will these be her ruin? Humans were not welcome in Bearden and while Callum will not let Leah leave she will not accept his protection. Leah wants to leave Bearden and when Jamin offers her a solution she accepts, but all she has done is put the town in danger. It takes a strong person to stand up and defend the ones that cannot fight for themselves; Leah has done it before and she is ready to do it again.
I Just Wanted This To Continue!! OVER 18+READING
You have to develop a soft spot for this poor alpha. Bearden bears are falling apart since the alpha is sick, he won't be getting better. His sons really don't want to know that but are trying to run things. One being the mayor and leaving his little brother to do his job running the firehouse as chief. A loan woman in a bad car crash had to be brought into their protected enclave after she saw a firefighter change shape. Cullen will have to face taking the alpha in order to save their enclave. But what to do about this human woman that he is draw to protect and his bear wants as bad as he does. After all humans are forbidden in the enclave, outsiders don't stay, she has to many secrets and will run he just knows it. Can he learn to trust her as his bear wants? Will she help or hurt his enclave? Can she realize she has finally found a home, a place where she can trust the friendship so freely offered by a lot of the town as she gets a job in town after she discovers she can't ever leave. Some don't want her there even the growly alpha who makes her wish she could stay,if he didn't seem to hate her. Another bear also seems to want her leading to a whole new set of problems. This is such a wonderful journey of discovery. As they learn to trust, face themselves and admitting what you want or need to do for yourself and all those around you.I so wanted to know what happen next at the moment this book ended. A great read.
First for me from this author
Overall, I enjoyed this story.
Callum was an awesome and sweet man, and shifter. I liked the glimpses in his head when he was struggling to balance his normal responsibilities with his new ones due to his father's declining health. I was a bit disappointed how all mentions of his father (which was front and center most of the book) just died off when the suspicions and actions began. Did he disappear into the ether? I only mention this because SO MANY authors build up a story around one part of a conflict (ie his father's heath issues) and when the "real" conflict is brought up the other is just dropped like it never existed.
Leah was a bit fiery, but not obnoxious about it which I loved. I struggled to like her 85% of the book though, because she just kept REALLY important things to herself. This was a huge problem for me because her whole fear was in her head and people were hurt from her inaction and cowardice. ESPECIALLY when Jamin finally popped up.. WHY are you protecting him?! This made the whole "should I or shouldn't I" a bit underwhelming and irritating.
I love seeing all sides of the story I'm reading, so I enjoyed having the POV from both characters. I also struggled with some things like the ending.. how was Jamin spilling secrets on the news, wasn't he dead 3 days already?
Regardless, I am open to reading the rest of this series and more from this author in general.
I kindly received this ARC from Cecilia Lane in exchange for my honest review.
in all honestly when I started this book I wasn't sure how I felt. I've read a lot of paranormal books set in it's own little world outside the human world. but I have to say this book honestly surprised me. it is well written, amazing story line that sucks you in until you have devoured every single word.
I loved the main characters, Leah and Callum and couldn't get enough though reading their story while picturing what will happen to the others in the continuance of this series, became a real pain, so please tell me they are all getting another book especially Gideon.
I will be recommending this new series to everyone I know and to anyone reading this, give it a go, trust me you will not be disappointed if shifters, dragons, vampires and fae are your thing, it's a whole new world for you to sink your teeth into :). Also cannot wait for more of this series, I think it's going to drive me insane to wait for the next one as I need to know what happens next.
Callum is the chief at the fire station but while his father is sick, he’s now Mayor and needs to become Alpha. He’s a bear shifter and his town is blocked from humans. When a car wrecks onto their ‘protected property’, Callum must decide her fate because she saw one of them shift. Leah has been on her own since she was a teenager. She stole a map from her ex and he caused her to wreck. She thinks she hit her head harder than she thought, when she sees a man change into a bear. She’s ready to run but Callum can’t allow her to leave. Leah decides to bide her time and then sneak away but she starts to fall for the little town and the big bear. When Callum discovers that Leah had something to do with the explosion in town hall, he may have to be judge, jury, and executioner.
Great story with bears, faes, and vampires. Leah has never had a place she wanted to call home until now. Callum is being pulled in so many directions he doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going. Now he realizes his mate is human. Action, suspense, and sex.
Interesting Start to a Series
This is my first time reading anything by this author and I found this first book in the series to be an enjoyable read. It is a different take on shifters, and supernatural beings in general, in that they live in enclaves hidden from the outside world by ancient magic. Despite some small editing errors, the story moved along nicely so I was able to overlook them when I came upon them. I liked both of the MC’s, Callum and Leah. Leah had a rough upbringing and then seemed to make bad choice after bad choice in who to trust. Callum has a mantle of responsibility to shoulder that he does not feel ready for, but steps up to it in the end for the good of his people. They both have secrets, but it is only when they let their guards down that they find they belong to each other. And a cheap attack brings something to Leah that she never bargained for, but wouldn’t trade for anything. I definitely recommend giving this book a try.
I'm in love with the characters! I by now have read the whole bears den series and even though the plot seems very similar in all of them I still really liked reading each and every book in this series. I fell in love with the town and it's people. There seems to be a common theme that the "villains" are only briefly addressed after they conquered the respective hurdle. The are obviously more of an instrument to drive the plot but I would have liked to get a bit more sentences on what happened with them after. For example in Runaway Mate I would have liked to know more about what happened to Bentley after he was sent to Prison for his crimes. I found it a bit too quick. Especially thinking about how he financed huge amounts of Pro-human programs. Like what happened with Moore Industries? But other than that I love her writing and I'm already half way through the black claw ranch series.
Callum has been shoved into a position he wasn't ready to take, and now he's got a woman shoved into his world as well. He doesn't want to deal with everything as acting mayor and he sure doesn't want this woman in his town, or so he tried to tell himself, and his bear. Leah is running and has been for quite awhile. She ends up in the ditch and saved by the first man to ever make her feel safe. Things heat up between Callum and Leah, as well as the past coming for Leah. Watching them figure each other out and fight their own thoughts and feeling was awesome. I never once thought that the twists would turn that way, and was truly thrown by it, in the best of ways. Loved this and can't wait for the next!!!
A great start to a new series, the story has adventure, suspense, surprises, with a love story. The characters are brilliant that they have their own tales to tell I'm sure, with the chemistry between Callum and Leah there is a lot going on in the story line. After being cheated on by her ex boyfriend Jamin so many times she decided to make a run for it but on the way took a map belonging to him, she decided to find out where x marked the spot. Callum is a bear shifter, the Bearden fire chief and acting mayor where shifters are hidden behind a wall set up by Fae magic so they are safe from the human world........... that is until a woman crashes in to Callum's life literally. .i won't ruin the plot but this is well worth reading
Running away is an option but in this case, Leah Arden has no choice. Her crazy ex Jamin wants a map she has stolen from and he will do everything he can to get to her, even crashing her car. Now the fun begins
Callum Strathorn can’t believe a stranger is injured near his invisible town but she has seen things she shouldn’t have. Now she has to stay. A story of shifters, dragons, vampires and other strange things. Leah and Callum are drawn to one another but there are so many secrets they have to share but it’s all about trust. Callum is one handsome, protective sexy bear who will do anything to protect Leah. Loved their chemistry. Loved the story.
In Forbidden Mate humans don't know about shifters. Or Fae, or vampires, or the magic that hides the paranormals. Mayor and bear shifter Callum has to protect the town of Bearden. When Leah wrecks her car inside their territory she can't be allowed to leave. At least twice I didn't know how she could possibly get to her HEA. Their chemistry and the "will they or won't they" is intense. The baddie is determined to make sure they won't. Bearden has that small town community feel. You just want to move in and become part of the extended family.
This story has action, suspense, a cool mythology, and some scorching sexy times.
Awesome! Loved it,
This storyline has everything, shifters are being forced to reveal themselves when a snarky fea wants to be king. Leah is on the run and is saved by Calium a bad ass sexy firefighter or rather temporary mayor of Beardon, hah I love the towns name. This story is filled with drama, adventure, thrills and suspense as well as twists and plots,as all will be revealed. Oh and the humans aren't coming...they are here! Did i I tell you about that hot sexy firefighter and a whirlwind romance....sigh... love this ladies made writing skills...girl you ROCK!
I love it when i can get lost in a book and become one with the story!!!
Leha and Cullen are definitely two totally different characters that will have you laughing, oohing and aahing throughout the story. She is a spitfire and he's one grumpy bear, together sparks fly.
Prepare to journey to a hidden town protected by magic. Shifters, Powerful Fae, Vampires and a small human women running for her life. It's a fun story to read.
Suggested for Mature readers due to sexual content.
Leah is human. After being cheated on by her ex boyfriend Jamin she had had it so she took a map he had and left to find out where x marked the spot.
Callum is a bear shifter, Bearden fire chief and acting mayor. Bearden is a shifter / supernatural town, set up with the aid of Far magic to have an invisible wall around it. Safe from the human world until a woman crashes into his life.
I love the characters and storyline. It was a really fun read with lots of drama, spice, surprises, twist and turns. I really couldn't turn the pages fast enough and can't wait for the next book. It's an awesome new series. Don't miss it,
Can he forgive her and claim her as his mate? Can she make the right choices and find love and happiness? Will her evil ex destroy not only her but the entire town? Love this series already
I enjoy reading this book and cannot wait to read the following books in this series.
I am very curious about Nolan and Becca story. Thats one I would love to get my hands on and read right away.
I have to say that I really sympathize with Leah when it comes to her freaking out and telling their secret. When your face with a live threat of being killed you would do whatever you have to do to save yourself.
Esp since most of her life she lived with a Monstor and have been taking care of herself.
This is a good book to read and like I said earlier I am really looking forward to Becca and Nolan's book
This is a great start to a new series! I'm going to start by saying how much I love the name of the Shifter town, Bearden. It made me giggle. The rest of the story was full of adventure, suspense, surprises, and a wonderful love story. I didn't want to put it down once I started it, and my children had to ask me more than once when they needed something because I was so engrossed in it. The characters are wonderful and the chemistry between Callum and Leah is hot. There really is a lot going on in the story line, so it kept me interested until the very end.
