Pepper Brooks #2

Literally Murder

Rate this book
A Farewell to Blondes

When a young woman shows up dead in Campus Creek, amateur sleuth Pepper Brooks is warned not to get involved. She's fine with that. It's her final quarter of college, she's immersed in Hemingway and planning her future. Plus, things are already complicated enough trying to figure out where everything stands with Alex, her maybe-boyfriend.

But when two more fair-haired women show up drowned, Pepper literally can't stay away. Especially when her best friend may be the next one For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Readers, this is the second book in a literary-themed cozy series. If you ever feel inclined to quote classic literature, sniff books when no one is looking, and think dogs are a girl's best friend -- right up there with a good book --  you're going to love Pepper and her Pine Crest friends. And if Hemingway's not your jam, no worries, each book will feature a different classic author. ;) Happy reading!

Eryn Scott

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

Her first cozy mystery series, Pepper Brooks, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. Eryn's newest series is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are great for readers who love a hint of paranormal with their mysteries. These books feature a tiny town tucked between craggy coastline and rocky shores with quirky characters of both the living and non-living variety. Look for new releases from all three of these series in 2022 as well as Eryn Scott's new cozy series.

4 Star review Literally Murder (Pepper Brooks Cozy Mysteries #2) by Eryn Scott

Audio Review:

I am loving the cozy mysteries written by Eryn Scott that I have read/listened too. The narrator Michelle Ames is new to me and I enjoyed her performance as she brought this cozy mystery to life for me. One of the unusual and most enjoyable things about this book was the literary references which I found highly entertaining as Pepper sifted through the clues and jumped to conclusions.

This was a a book filled with enough danger, suspense secrets and clues to satisfy my detective spirit. The intrigue and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat as I listened to this story, .

There are several twists, turns and surprises in Literally Murder as Pepper, Olivia and Alex follow the clues and I have to say that I was taken by surprise on a couple of occasions. .

I am enjoying these stories and look forward to listening to more once available. Pepper has grown on me although her constant accusations of guilt and jumping to conclusions do at times frustrate me and make me want to rip my hair out.

Such a well laid out mystery. I second guessed myself till the end.

I adore Pepper, and how she is attracted to the puzzle of the case, but knows rationally that she isn't the police. Her inner battle to solve the case or stay out of it is refreshing. While she is a take charge character she also know when to rely on her friend circle for help.

Every side character has their own growth arc, which I makes me love this series even more. This book is full of growth for all the characters in Pepper's life and I felt it added so much depth to the story.

This series having each book tie into a literary theme is perfection. It makes me so giddy to follow along as she connects the case back to a famous writer. With this being the second series I've read by Eryn that has heavy reader themes, I assume she is a fellow bibliophile. I hope to see more book related series from her.

This book features a serial killer, and it's so well set up. Throughout the book I kept trying to work through the clues, looking back the culprit totally makes sense, but man was it a good ride to get to that person.

And finally, the ending. Holy crap the ending made me teary eyed. So much awesomeness, and celebrating to be had in the last few chapters. Loved it so much! I can't wait to read the next in series.

You'll love this book if you love non paranormal cozy mysteries with an amateur sleuth and a cast of supportive family and friends.

It's Pepper's last year as an undergrad and she really hopes to never see a murdered corpse ever again. No such luck. Her cop friend and his detective father don't want her investigating but her other friends (and a painfully shy new one) insist that she can find out more than the authorities can because the victim(s) are also students at their university. Let the sleuthing begin! Good read!
Michella Ames is a rock star in her audio interpretation.

This series definitely got better. I’ve grown to like Pepper and see passed some of the immaturity. Love the romances and the murder plot was intriguing. Just enough tension to keep it interesting and yet still a cozy mystery.

Pepper Brooks is busy navigating her final quarter at NWU. She's excited but sad to know her friends will be leaving soon. She's also left wondering where she stands with her maybe boyfriend Alex upon his return from the police academy in Seattle. Then there's student Sam Delaney who keeps going on about the poor water quality on campus. When Pepper stumbles across fellow student Katie lying dead in the campus creek, Pepper vows to stay out of the police investigation. She trusts them to figure this out without her, after all, there was nothing literary about Katie's death, was there? As more female students turn up dead, Pepper begins to see a connection. Is she crazy? She's terrified Liv could be next and is determined to keep that from happening, even if it means breaking her promise to Alex.

I didn't like this one as much as the first book in the series. First, I don't enjoy Hemmingway and other early-mid- 20th-century American writers. I never read any of the stories mentioned in this book. Second, I didn't like the high body count in this one. I ESPECIALLY can't stand violence against women and this story is tailor made for me to not like. I thought I knew whodunit because it can't be an obvious suspect or a recurring character and one person stood out to me as super creepy and weird. I was certain it was that person until a clue late in the story popped up pointing me in a different direction. I wasn't 100% certain which one was the killer. The dramatic finale requires a LOT of suspension of disbelief. It was so crazy! I also found the literary connection to the deaths to be quite a stretch. It was rather odd and absurd. The romance subplot was OK but not my favorite. I could take it or leave it at this point.

Pepper is young but she's learned from her missteps in the previous book. She's trying hard to change her reputation and grow into someone her future colleagues can respect. I'm not sure why she assumes she's going to automatically get a teaching job at NWU or that the same people she takes classes from will be her colleagues but Pepper goes through life wearing rose-colored glasses. At that age, I too thought I had the world at my feet and I was destined to fulfill my dreams. Pepper isn't experienced enough at life yet to become jaded and disillusioned but this is why I like her. She's sweet, friendly and charming. Alex is kind of Mr. Big Shot. He's a rookie cop after completing the police academy in a matter of months and assigned to the Pine Crest PD already, as automatically as Pepper will be given a professorship at NWU I guess. Nepotism. Alex has a softer side than his dad though. Detective Valdez is tough and super serious. Alex has a softer side. He misses his mom who was killed in the line of duty and feels connected to her through reading her favorite classic novels. AWWW!! When he's being son Alex and reader Alex, he's sweet and charming but when he's cop Alex, he tries too hard to emulate his dad and becomes kind of a jerk at times. Of course he claims he cares about Pepper and wants her to be safe. Liv is a better friend. She knows what Pepper wants to do it wrong but to make sure Pepper is safe, she plays Watson to Pepper's Sherlock. Liv is a lot smarter than Pepper and makes better judgement calls but she goes along for the ride and actually enjoys it. I appreciate that she's a female in a man's world and can keep up with the guys. They respect her and appreciate her. I hope that continues. Hammy, the Boston Terrier, is the cutest little love bug. She can sense people's emotions and is always there to help. I just want to steal her!

Naked Newt is growing on me. He's a nice guy, albeit socially awkward. I'd wonder if he was on the autism spectrum because he's definitely off. I think he likes Pepper and Liv and wants to be friends with them but doesn't really know how. If they let him, I think they could be friends. Plus, that could snag them free coffee! Alex's partner, Frank, is a fun character. He's lively and charming but maybe a little too meddling at times. I don't like Liv's boyfriend, Carson. She says she likes him because he makes her laugh but it's clear she's more serious and intelligent than he is. I don't expect this romance to last past graduation. He can't keep up with her. Plus, now he's in a relationship, he's eager to push Alex and Pepper together. Carson and Alex seem like opposites and yet enjoy each other's company. I wouldn't trust them to hang out together. Alex might be a bad influence on Carson and make Carson into a serious, overprotective jerk. At least Alex does have the right to ask Pepper not to investigate because he's a cop. Pepper's sister Maggie is such a lovely big sister. I adore how much of a theater geek she is and didn't need her to explain the comet reference.

The victim was "Crazy Katie" who we met in the previous book. My heart sank because she was obviously somewhat unstable and probably put her trust in the wrong man. Her bragging and made-up stories may have angered someone to kill her. What if it was a professor? Pepper keeps hearing stories that point in that direction. Katie didn't deserve to die.

Reuben Cross, Pepper's new classmate, is one weird guy. He's REALLY into Hemmingway and seems as into Pepper as he is Hemmingway. He has a funny way of showing appreciation and gives me the creeps. I don't trust him, especially around women. Sam Delaney is another weirdo. Are all the men on campus creeps? Sam keeps going on and on about the water supply but never actually explains what he means and what his evidence is. He wants the administration to pay attention to the issue but what exactly IS the issue? He has a tendency towards violence and may have been at the scene of the crime just before the murder. Should Pepper trust him? NO WAY! Professor Garrison is a charismatic theater professor all the girls seem to adore. Some girls adore him more than they should and that's just wrong of him. It's unprofessional AND he's married. He's a total sleaze and I kept hoping he would be the one to get killed. Pepper suspects he might be the murderer. That's too obvious. I don't think he's that smart. He's not smart enough to hide his affairs. However, it could be Mrs. Garrison. If this were the Shakespeare themed book we could pull in the quote about a woman scorned. Why resort to murdering her husband's student lovers though? That sounds counterproductive because these GIRLS aren't old enough to realize they've been taken advantage of. They deserve sympathy, not murder.

The bartender, Isaac, seems like he's either a nice guy or a creep. He intervenes with the mean girls but he also gives Pepper special treatment. He's 10 years older and a bar owner so he shouldn't be showing favoritism towards a student and patron of his establishment. I don't think he deserves the witch hunt the town council is mounting for no reason other than he's a stranger.

There are a lot of mean girls on campus. Ginger, an education major who works in the library, is the opposite of Pepper. She's quick to make sly innuendo and offers false sincerity. Pepper doesn't trust the scientists (YES! Don't trust anyone who doesn't read novels!) They are true mean girls, making snide remarks about a fellow student drinking alone. Heidi Schultz is the Queen Bee, a cheerleader and mean girl to her core. She's rude and totally misguided on what makes a real man. I don't like her any more than Pepper does but she doesn't deserve her fate. Her boyfriend, Nick, seems a little scary. Although he refused to fight a rival baseball player on the field, he seems to have a barely contained temper. If I were Alex, I would have nipped that in the bud right away by bringing him in to the station.

I like Mindy so much! She is like me- sitting at a table, reading a big book, drinking alone and minding her own business. She's my new favorite character. That's why what happened came as a huge shock and upset. I also really like Victoria from the coffee cart. She's shy and quiet and rarely speaks. She may know more about the first murder than she is willing to say. Pepper is kind and compassionate towards the girl but has an ulterior motive I can't quite like. Pepper also pushes Victoria into doing something she isn't comfortable doing. The poor girl is terrified. At least Det. Valdez isn't his usual stern self with her.

I do love all the bookish references and the next story revolved around AHHHH cue angel music AHHHH JANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to read that one so even though I disliked this one, I'm going to keep going. Plus any story about dear Jane's characters will be lighter than Hemmingway.

Sleuthless

Frustrating!!! This one like the first one is a head-shaker. I read a lot of cozy mysteries and if there is anyone who should not be an amateur sleuth, it's Pepper Brooks. Why not just admit you're going to get involved in trying to solve a murder. Instead of deceiving everyone. Her biggest problem is, she hones in on a suspect without proof. Just hearsay and innuendo. And they end up not being the guilty party. At almost the same place in book one as in book two, I couldn't stop shaking my head.

STORY-LINE LITERALLY MURDER BY ERYN SCOTT:

Pepper and Liv are in the last year of college; each looking forward to the future, but sad they will part. Alec has been to law enforcement training and just returned. Things are a little different between Pepper and Alec; they can't seem to connect as they did before he left and frustration's setting in.

When Pepper finds a student face down in the creek, Alec insist she stay out of the case. Of course, Pepper does her best, but everyone keeps bringing her clues. What's she to do? She fields the clues to Alex and his father. However when two more girls turn up dead, Pepper's has a hard time setting on the side lines. Then when Liv's life's in harm's way, Pepper is off and running. My book review of Literally Murder follows.

CHARACTER, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Eryn Scott's writing keeps getting better and better. Scott sank the hook in early and held me on the line until the final page. Filling Literally Murder with intrigue, mystery, suspense and quotes from Hemingway. With a ready quote for any given situation, Pepper's deep in classes on Hemingway with Professor Evensworth.

Scott kept the mystery and suspense at high peak and did not reveal the killer until the last possible moment. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. I never considered this person. Scott matured Pepper in this book; she's not as ready to accuse after what happened in book 1. However, she has quite a cast of suspects to choose from until they each come up with an alibi.

Pepper frustration and uncertainty with Alec and their "going no where romance" is growing. Just as you think, finally the big kiss, something would happen to interrupt them. Also, Alex's personality matured in Literally Murder. They are so awkward when it comes to the romance, I wanted to yell.

Of course, Hammy, aka hamburger, is back; along with Naked Nate, Alex's detective father, Carson, Liv, and others. I love to read a series with continuing and reappearing characters. Liv and Pepper are at a crossroads. Pepper will continue her education in hopes of getting a teaching position at the college; while Liv will work in her father's company many hours away. Pepper's mother's back in book 2, and I, must say, I like her more as she and Pepper interact.

MY OPINION:

I found Literally Murder a solid well-written book with steady pacing and well-developed characters. Eryn Scott included humor and funny repartee; I found myself laughing out loud at Pepper's zingers as she talked to herself. Scott included an action packed finale which sent Pepper into overdrive with action, suspense, and revelations. Filled with twists and turns, suspects galore, a romance going nowhere, I found Scott's plotting excellent. Her scenes transition smoothly and with Scott's vivid writing I could see each scene in my mind's eye.

The Hemingway quotes fit into the story line smoothly; I can not say a lot more without giving spoilers. In the past, I could never get through a Hemingway novel, however, I will try reading him again. This is a clean entertaining cozy mystery suitable for anyone. I would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend.

LITERALLY MURDER RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4

FINALLY, PLEASE NOTE:

Pepper Brooks is at it again on the trail of a killer and I am loving it. I have listened to book one and jumped at the chance to listen to book two. Glad I did because it was just as fun. I really like the characters especially Pepper and her best friend or as she likes to be called sexy Watson. Although I might not have got all the literally quotes it was fun to listen to as Pepper worked out who the killer was and I enjoyed the mystery because there was plenty of suspects. I hope more of the series is going to be released on audible because I want to see how things change for Pepper and her friends now that the final year of university is over.
When a young woman is found dead in the creek Pepper has no intention of investigating, even if everybody tells her a secret about the dead girl in confidence she points them in the direction of the police. It is only after a second blond girl is found dead in water that Pepper begins to suspect more than just a serial killer is roaming the campus. The deaths are connected but how? Is it like the campus newspaper suggests and someone is showing just how dangerous the water on campus is and is everyone in danger? Or is it just blond girls having affairs that is the trigger? The police start to narrow he suspects down to two possibles but with a third body found Pepper has no choice but to run her own investigation because the police are looking in the wrong direction and aren't listening to her. Pepper thinks she know why the girls are chosen she just needs to work out who the killer is before he targets her very own Sexy Watson aka her blond best friend.
I liked the narrator, she has a really distinct voice that she puts to good use. There was a slight problem with sound, where it would go soft at the start of a few chapters and then return to normal , not enough to stop you listening but I did pick up on it a few times.

This time the literary link is supposed to be Hemingway. [it was Shakespeare last time.] I get that there has to be a theme for these… but this is not a strong one.
Our sleuth hones in on rumours and innuendo and yet again … accuses the wrong suspect.
Suddenly we have an issue with her relationship with her mother. [Was this in the last book? I can’t remember and I read it days ago… *blinks* that’s not good is it?]
The murder scene by the river smells like licorice. [what?]
And for some reason, given how the last book ended, she’s NOT dating Alex, the cop in training. Okay… He’s all trained now and on the beat with a partner. [who is described once and never appears again… which is kind of odd. His father is not his partner, you know?]
Pepper rebukes some women at the new bar who bitch about another woman. [they’re science students … and she hates scientists. So she’s a lit snob, as well. *frowns*] But then in the next chapter she teases a girl about not talking.
And this bar… Really, if the locals wanted to object to the building of a new bar it’s a little late to do it when it’s all built, decorated, open and serving people.
This one really stretched credibility… [I watch Midsomer Murders believe me, I know when credibility is stretched.]
I tried again but I really think this author is not for me.

Good

It’s Pepper and Liv’s final term at university, and Pepper is reading Hemingway for classes, only to stumble across a body in one of her happy spots!
With no lack of suspects, and a newly minted police officer for a sort-of boyfriend, Pepper doesn’t really want to get involved: if only Liv didn’t fit the victim profile so well!

Set about six months after the first book, we find Pepper having learned some lessons from last time- she is much less vocal about her suspicions than before! Of course she still has to take a class with one of the people she accused last time, so it’s not all roses.
Her relationship with Alex is slow moving, and she’s a little worried about Liv leaving, but it all pales when people keep coming to her to get her to solve the murders!

This is another enjoyable story in this series, and I especially loved the fact that our heroine had actually learned a few things from before. The book has a cosy pacing, and a rather clever plot with literal meanings! I won’t spoil it though, because I personally enjoyed watching it play out.

A fun, quick read for cosy mystery fans.

Right after Spring Break, while walking to their first class, Liv and Pepper hear a person referring to an article in University Newspaper, The Frond, about a body in Campus Creek. The Frond is not really a legitimate newspaper and the headline turns out to be totally misleading. The article was actually referring to the water quality in the creek and was trying to get the attention of the administration.

Imagine her surprise when Pepper actually finds a body floating in Campus Creek later that day. The deceased is Katie Landin, a former classmate. Alex asks Pepper to stay out of the investigation and she tries to, until a second body is found in the fountain in the town center.

What is the connection between the murders? Who is killing the girls? Can Pepper figure out what is happening? Can she get Alex and his father to listen to her?

Eryn Scott has a unique way of weaving a literary theme throughout the story and tying everything together through the works of a famous author. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

Okay, I admit, I am a sucker for cozy mysteries. Mysteries in general, really, but give me a whodunnit with a feisty female amateur sleuth and I’m there, baby. In particular, I am really enjoying this series so far- Pepper is a character after my own heart. English major, check. Loves reading, double check, and then sticks her nose where it doesn’t belong? Uh huh. Check.

The setting for these stories is almost a character itself - the Pacific Northwest, filled with autumn leaves, cold breezes, long walks under dappled trees and hot coffee to warm one’s hands. To be honest, I think I would read these stories just because of the setting and because of Pepper’s personality. The mystery is the bonus. Okay, so I usually figure it out before Pepper does and yes, she does have an inclination to think everyone she talks to did it, but there’s something wholly loveable about Pepper and I find each new book in the series better than the last. So don’t mind me if I snuggle under the covers with a cup of hot tea in one hand and a new Literally Murder in the other... I’m reading.

This is the second part of Eryn Scott's "Pepper Brooks" mystery series, featuring intrepid college student and literary buff, Pepper.

Pepper and her BFF and roommate, Liv, are in their final quarter of classes at NWU. Pepper is trying not to think too hard about them going their separate ways after graduation, and she's also trying not to worry too much about whether she and hunky rookie cop, Alex Valdez, are dating or not. Pepper is intent on her classes, but when she stumbles across the body of a woman in a nearby creek, she finds herself unable to stop thinking about the murder. When two more young co-eds end up murdered in the same way, Pepper is convinced there is a connection to the literary works of Hemingway...and she's also afraid her friend Liv may be the next victim.

Delightful! Pepper is an engaging character, and the plot flowed nicely. The story had some neat twists and turns, and I liked that Pepper didn't spend the entirety of the narrative consumed with her amateur investigation.

Very good cozy--four stars!

The Heroine is Annoying but the Story is Really Good

I thought Pepper Brooks (the heroine) was going to drive me nuts dozens of times while reading this book (and while reading the first book, too). I didn't like being in her head having to hear her crazy thoughts, conspiracy theories or all of her naive, immature Pepperness. The stupid risks she takes & how wrong she can be about situations or people ... it makes me want to cringe. I think her philosophy about sleuthing is that if she just accuses everyone, then eventually she'll stumble on to the real killer. And that pretty much sums up this book. But despite my annoyance with Pepper, the other characters are likeable, the book is well-written, it's engaging, the storyline moves along quickly, the ending is suspenseful and very satisfying. I recommend it to all cozy mystery lovers.

Yet again the exciting antics of Pepper Brooks captured my attention! While faithfully working toward a degree in English to follow in her late father's career path, Pepper stumbles upon a string of campus homicides that put a person close to her in danger. Meanwhile, she is struggling to define her growing relationship with Alex Valdez, a local police officer. She try but fails to keep herself from getting involved in the campus crimes. With her witty humor and literary knowledge, Pepper takes the reader on a suspenseful adventure of relationship woes and murder mysteries!
Thank you, Eryn Scott, for an early copy of your book in exchange for an honest review.

To have and have not

Another good solid read. Alright I must admit that the characters are growing on me. Her final semester and all she wants to do is finish off her final paper on Hemingway. Unfortunately life has other plans with the bodies of two young blonde students being dumped in water. Although her instinct is to investigate, her studies must come first until she suspects that her blonde roommate is in danger. Two actual mysteries in this one and I must admit I didn't see one of them until the end. As mentioned the characters are really starting to grow on me and I'm surprised at how many of the quotes I actually know.

Literally murder

This is series number two and it was just as good as the first book. Pepper and Liv are roommates in their last semester of college and Pepper is not looking forward to losing her best friend. Liv has a job offer in Seattle which is an hour or two away. Pepper is going to go on for her masters degree and has no plans to leave the town where she has lived all her life. Things are just getting started when a murder of a college student occurs. Of course Pepper has a hard time staying out of the investigation but this book has some unexpected turns. Great reading.

Too many suspects

For the most part, the book was well written. There were, however, some grammatical errors, as well as some typos. While distracting, they did not alter my enjoyment of reading the book. I liked the main characters. They are all carry overs from the previous book. I learned more about them, which increases my interest in the story. Peppers suspect list seemed to include half of the town, and it was sometime difficult to keep up with them. Lots of twists in the plot. I'm sure that I will enjoy the next book even more. A good read. Hope you enjoy it, too.

Like with the first one in this series, I did tend to shake my head as Pepper continues to investigate mysteries when virtually everyone is telling her to stop before she gets hurt. However, I enjoyed watching the characters get fleshed out more and their relationships develop further. The plot is just as convoluted as the first book, but seems a little more like a standard cozy mystery. And this one has Hemingway as the author being featured instead of Shakespeare as in the first one. Light, but entertaining.

English major Pepper graduates in 2 months with her bachelor's. Her boyfriend, a new police officer did not want her getting involved with the previous murder on campus. Now there is a serial murderer targeting blonde co-eds. The students come to Pepper for help, as they feel she assisted in solving the previous murder. Once again, Pepper and her room mate Olivia, along with her dog, Hamburger are embroiled in amateur shenanigans with a promising ending.
I read an advanced copy of this book.

Another great mystery from Eryn Scott.

Every since I read the first book from this series, I was hooked. They are great cozy mysteries. The characters are so believable and if I was younger I could see myself being friends with them. Pepper is the one that solves the murders. With the help of her friends and her boyfriend, who is a policeman. If you like cozy mysteries this series is for you. Can't wait for the next book.

Book 2 was just great!

I loved the first book and this second one didn't disappoint. Good mystery with a very exciting last act. The characters stayed true to form. You know how some authors make the characters do stupid things to move the plot along? Not here. Our main characters are just as smart and spunky as ever. The mystery was very clever. Really a fun read. Naturally, I now HAVE to get Book 3!

Pepper finds another body. Then two more die and finally the killer sets his sight on Liv, Pepper's roommate. Alex, now a cop, is not happy that she is involved in another murder investigation. Turns out her literary knowledge will come in handy again.

I liked this novel better that the first. Character development strengthen. I also felt quite pleased that I figured out the killer before Pepper!

Another great romantic cozy mystery story!

I love the characters in this series. I really enjoyed reading the first book in the series and looked forward to reading this one. It did not disappoint. I will be binge reading this series.

This was a well-written, entertaining, fun and easy read. If you enjoy a good mystery with a young adult as the heroine, then this is a book you will not want to miss reading.

I really liked this book, even better than the first one! It had me chuckling a few times, but on the edge of my seat other times. Like Pepper, I kept going back & forth on who the serial killer was. This is a well written book that makes me look forward to continuing with the others in the series.

Another good entry in the Pepper Brooks mystery series. I know she is an academic with a concentration in literature but I think she might need to consider the Police Academy because she’s really good at figuring things out. A lot of things in this book are in her favor. Looking forward to the next book to see what she’s up to next.

Murders linked to literature.

When a serial murderer targets blondes, it is lit student Pepper who realizes that that each murder has a connection to the writings of Ernest Hemingway. Her almost-boyfriend Alex is working the cases with his father, but they fail to see the clues the way Pepper does. Then Pepper’s blonde bestie, Liv, becomes the next victim.

So good!

I don't often rate a book 5 stars but this one didn't give me a choice. I can't explain the reasons why without gicing things away, but suffice it to say, I have a huge smile on my face along with tears in my eyes!
