WHEN THERE IS NO REASON LEFT TO LIVE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH YOUR LAST SIX BULLETS?
The end of civilization arrived in the form of a giant asteroid thirteen months ago. For Burt James, a survivalist, it was not a complete surprise. He'd spent much of his adult life prepping for such a catastrophe. Consequently, while the majority of the population scoured the post-apocalyptic landscape for water and food, regressing into primitive killers, he bunkered down in his fortified hilltop home in a small town in the middle of the Australian Outback. But now he's out of food and down to his last six bullets, and he will have to make the most difficult choice of his life.
USA TODAY and #1 Amazon bestselling author Jeremy Bates has written over twenty novels and novellas, selling more than one million copies worldwide. His work has been translated into multiple languages and optioned for film and television by major studios. Midwest Book Review has likened his storytelling to that of Stephen King and Joe Lansdale, calling him a "master of the art." Bates is a KDP Select All-Star and the recipient of the Australian Shadows Award and the Canadian Arthur Ellis Award. He was also a finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards, the only major book honors chosen by readers.
His latest novel, *The No-End House*, is a standalone horror story set in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, where a pair of volunteers must navigate nine mysterious rooms in a sinister house. Scheduled for release by Kensington Publishing in July 2025, it’s a chilling tale of survival and escape.
Jeremy Bates always provides a very reliable sort of entertainment. This short novella is no exception. I’ve read a bunch of his Midnight Book Club series, usually around midnight, in fact. They are all thrillers, though Bates hops genres, so this one’s a science fiction apocalypse survival story. An asteroid made quick work of civilization as we know it, but the protagonist of Six Bullets is getting by, reaping the fruits of being a prepper in the beforeworld. Canned food and an arsenal go a long way, even with two kids to take care of. Burt has way more than six bullets to begin with, but what really makes the situation work for him is his three set in stone rules, brutal, but effective. It’s only once he ignores one of those rules for personal reasons that his situation quickly gets out of control and he finds himself down to the impossible choices. Pretty good story, well paced, character driven, appropriately dark, delivered like so many survival tales epistolary style through Burt’s diary. Oh Burt, you tried, you really did, you’ve made yourself tough and mean and brutal, but the world will always outdo you on all those accounts given a chance, asteroid or not. Made for an entertaining quick read, though. Now let’s get NASA some more funding, seriously. Someone needs to watch the skies.
Six Bullets by Jeremy Bates is a gripping thriller about the end of the world as we know it. What would you do with your last six bullets?
I received a complimentary Kindle copy in an Amazon promotion. That did not change my opinion for this review. I gave it five stars.

This is one man's saga about surviving after an asteroid hits earth. Told in diary format, Burt explains what happened and how being a "prepper" saved him. Even though I saw it coming, the ending was devastating.
A giant meteor has struck the earth, destroying civilization as we know it. Burt James, a survivalist has his fortress home, disguised as a desterted house., three weapons and plenty of food. water and ammunition. He kills anyone who approaches, and no one leaves. Except his 16 year old son, who leaves. This is a rather bleak tales, but very well written
How far are you willing to go to make your family safe, during an apocalypse? Would you kill your neighbor? Could you cannibalize? What would you do? It was unexpected to find out (no spoilers). A must read.
The world has ended form an asteroid hit and one survivor journals his days. Burt is a prepper sho survived the 'roid with his two sons, 15 & 7mos. He details his days of survival and in the end he breaks one of his three rules with devastating results.
Short, but raw and catchy. It did have a certain spook factor that I liked - laced with despair and a dose of eeriness that showed just how ruthless people can be in survival situations. Overall a pleasant surprise and a fun little read, good fit for a grim autumn evening
A great take on the post apocalyptic survival story. Rather than seeing what humanity becomes, we look at how one man and his children try to survive the immediate aftermath.
This was a short post-apocalyptic story, perfect to read the final hour of my flight back from the US (holiday sadly over :( ). I had already heard quite a few things about Jeremy Bates but never read anything by him even though I already own a couple of books by him. This story is about a father who has to survive with his two sons in a violent post-apocalyptic Australia.
I liked this book a lot. For such a short story it was easy to get into, even though I still need to get used to having only limited background information on the characters. The ending was also totally up my alley. This book has certainly giving me the motivation to go on and start reading his other work.
What a cool story! Gotta admit I wish there was more but I am glad i pre ordered this from Jeremy. This is the 3rd book or short story i have read of his this year and Im glad I have found this author. I wont go into details about the story, all i will say is that you will not regret picking this up.
A quick, enjoyable read, that reminded me of a mashup of The Martian and The Walking Dead. It's the end of the world as we know it after an asteroid hits and only the strong survive. We get to experience that through the journal of a survivor.
