Cassie was repeating customer orders at the coffee shop over and over under her breath to make sure she got it right. Her co-worker, Alice, kept laughing at her. Cassie took care of an online order and, as she turned, Alice knocked her arm hard enough to spill some of the coffee. Alice ran to the back room, trying to avoid Hunter who had just walked in. She left Cassie with a line of customers. Cassie waited on Hunter who smirked as he gave her a fake name in what Cassie saw as a childish, immature prank to embarrass her when she loudly called it out without noticing what she really said. Cassie was glad when he and his friend left. Cassie was here to figure out her life goals and didn’t need a jerk like that messing with her.
Alice tried to talk to her about how gorgeous Hunter was and what she fantasized it would be like to be with Hunter. Cassie tried to ignore her and do her job. But Alice wouldn’t stop. Couldn’t anyone be serious? Cassie was exhausted when she got home. Before she could get into the shower, her mother called and lectured her about being wound-up so tight and not enjoying life. That was not why they sent her to Vail! Same old lecture over and over.
At work the next day, Hunter and Cal came in again. Cal had to leave and tied his dog in an alley. Hunter promised to take care of the old dog. But when he went out to get him, someone had hit him with their car and injured him. Cassie, noting how caring and concerned he was over the injured dog, agreed to help him get the dog to the vet. As they waited for the vet to finish up, Hunter told Cassie she was too serious and actually made her see for herself that she was! He was gentle and teasing, but it made her realize some things about herself. She accused him of being a playboy rich kid and made other false assumptions about him. She would never have thought he was a self-made tech billionaire and a genuinely nice person that cared about others.
This was a good story, somewhat amusing along the way. Cassie was so very serious that she never saw the fun side of life. Hunter, who merely wanted to make her laugh with his silliness, was far more “adjusted” and knew what he wanted out of life. Could these polar opposites somehow come together to find happiness? Or does Cassie have too much growing up that needs to happen before she learns to loosen up and live? I was given a copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it. My comments reflect my honest opinion.
