Soho: The Rise and Fall documents how a little-known industrial neighborhood in New York became, through one of the accidents of history, a nexus of creative activity for a brief but intensive period. Such an ideal situation--entirely unplanned--could not last forever; the author shows how market forces squeezed out this art utopia, to be replaced by a shadow of its former self.
I've got to say that this is a really thorough history of Soho, but it was a total slog. The author is a total insider but his writing is hard to take - rather dull. Should be more interesting for the subject.
This was the first book on NYC history that I read. At the time, I lived on the UES but was working in soho from 2002-2004 when there was a real evolution of the neighborhood.
