Alone. Defeated. Only one way out of an impossible situation.

In the stinking bowels of a reptilian colosseum, defeated starship admiral Azhiedal T'mirurok awaits a brutal death at the hands of his captors. His fleet is in ruins and the worlds of Denár are swarming with the troops and saurs of the powerful Drahkian Empire.

As he enters the arena beneath the thunder of thousands of Drahks screaming for his blood, the lone Denáran admiral steels himself for the end of his life. When enormous overlord Bálok saunters out onto the field, Azhiedal comes face to face with the jaded ruler responsible for his system's downfall.

The cunning Drahk is interested in only one thing and his unexpected taunts shock Azhiedal to his core, shifting the Denáran to a decision that will carry them both into an experience far greater than either of them bargained for.

–"Where are you, Azhiedal T’mirurok? Are you already dead? What are you willing to fight for?"

This short story takes place within the worlds of the epic science fantasy series T'nari Renegades–Pleiadian Cycle, specifically drawn from the pages of Blood of the Prime, Book I, where the encounter is told from Bálok's point of view.

Unlike Flare Shifter, the beautifully realized prequel to the author’s Blood of the Prime saga I previously read and enjoyed, T’nari Blood Claim is a complex and enthralling moment lifted directly from Blood of the Prime. The twist is that here, it is not told from the viewpoint of reptilian Overlord Bálok as it is in Blood of the Prime, but seen through the eyes of the imprisoned Admiral Azhiedal T’mirurok, whose Denáran fleet fought bravely against the invading Drankian fleet but is now in tatters as the cold and compassionless reptilian conquerers set their sights on Denár.

As this short - just over twenty pages - story opens, the Admiral is imprisoned in the bowels of the Colosseum, about to be led out to battle Bálok himself before a roaring crowd. The outcome is a foregone conclusion; Admiral T’mirurok is like a diminutive lion cub next to the vicious, heartless and physically imposing reptilian, Bálok, who never loses. But Admiral T’mirurok has one ace up his sleeve of which Bálok is unaware. When Bálok places something on the virtual table as incentive for T’mirurok to give him a good fight, the wheels are set in motion for not just one of the greatest and most shocking battles the crowd has ever seen, but intrigue that creates possibilities.

To say more would be a disservice to first-time readers, but the amount of world-building, intrigue, and exciting action author Erin MacMichael allows to unfold naturally and with tension within such a relatively brief vignette is staggering. In just over twenty pages, Erin MacMichael gives readers a compelling glimpse into a brilliantly conceived and fully realized world that is not our own. Riveting action and absorbing intrigue gifts readers not just with a sense of this world, but also a sense of two of the main and obviously pivotal characters which inhabit it.

T’nari Blood Claim will have those who love this genre rushing off to tackle Blood of the Prime. At a mere twenty-three pages, however, it’s also great for those looking for a shorter read — perhaps a palate cleanser — that rises way above the rest. Fabulous stuff from an excellent writer. Five enthusiastic stars on this one!

This short novella serves as an introduction to the feud between two great foes: Azhiedal T'mirurok, a starship admiral, and the overlord Bálok who has imprisoned him. Azhiedal is incarcerated beneath a great fighting pit colosseum, and it's his turn to take the field. Bálok himself is hungry for blood - and a challenge. Can Azhiedal survive?

The writing is strong and descriptive, and when it comes to the action, very visual. It worked well in the scope of a short story, keeping it punchy - I'd have loved more of the sights, sounds and smells of the environments of this strange, alien world, and no doubt there is a lot more to come in the following novels. The protagonist's skills, perhaps a sort of martial art, are very interesting, with idea they are connected to tattoos across his body. But it feels almost more spiritual than technological, so that will be interesting to explore too!

Azhiedal T’mirurok and Bálok meet in a duel to the death! Great drama, ferrous fight. I do not read much sci-fi these days but this was a great tale.

Although A stort Story it was rather thought provoking. I fight without a given outcome. Well worth reading.мир в уме может помочь человеку преодолеть большие препятствия.

Wow that one was over before I blinked! Another chapter in the T'nari series, another new race. The story involves just a single incident, but I think it's probably going to be very consequential. Very quick but enjoyable read, developing the Drahk character Balok further. I'm looking forward the next (longer) chapter in the story.
