M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.
As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.
Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.
This is fantastic collection of three Colin McCool novellas that are a must read for fans of the series, although for the final two you do need to have read book 4, Underground Druid, first as they are full of spoilers if you don't.
1. Carnival of Blood ⭐⭐⭐ A crazy little story about Colin rescuing a foul-mouthed lad from a carnival funhouse. A lot of fun to read and full of humour this one.
2. Serpent's Daughter ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This one fills in a lot of Belladonna's secret family issues back home in Europe and see's her off on a mission with an unexpected sidekick. No Colin in this one, which feels odd, but his presence is felt regardless and the whole thing is very interesting nonetheless.
3. The Vigil ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Vigil gives us chance to learn more about Hemi and his backstory as Colin gets to meet Hemi's family and in particular his impressive mother. Absolutely terrific tale as the big Maori is an incredible character, yet also the most secretive about his heritage..... would love to learn even more though, fingers crossed!
This is a book that gives us threes treasures by the author. The first is about evil clowns and paranormal creatures. Colin meets Kenny and Derp by saving them from being sacrificed. The second story is about Belladonna and Crowley and their adventures in Spain trying to keep Bella from joining the ranks of her other family in guarding a witch that keeps her evil father from crossing the boundaries of the humans. We find out why Crowley sends pics of him and Bella back to Colin in order to make him jealous. The third is about Colin taking Hemi's body back to his mother and the adventure he endures in order to help Hemi's mom bring his spirit back to his body. All three novellas are excellent and worth reading, although the need to read the others in this series is needed in order to make sense of the stories. Good read.
This book is three novellas that full in a few gaps c.f.the Junkyard Druid series of books. The tales definite congestion if you have not already read through at least book for,Underground Druid, of the series. They were each quick, easy reads and I enjoyed learning what happened and how in these tales top fill in the items that were given only paying notice on the main books. One tale center specifically on the character Belladonna and gives more detail for her character and understanding who she is. The other two tales are still centered around Colin, but, in each instance, give us more information on his relationships with other characters and even more information on the character Hemi. All of the stories are well written and worth the read.
As sometimes happens, authors of a series of novels puts out novellas or short story collections. This one by MD Massey is quite good and allows him to investigate aspects of his world and do so involving sidelights to the main tales. In particular, it gives him the ability to give parts of the backstory of his girl friend Belladonna and it tells the backstory of his departed friend Hemi who is the son of a Polynesian Goddess. All three stories in this book are first rate.
This is great for a quick romp and finishing up loose ends. I want to encourage anyone thinking of reading this book to go read the other books first. It was adventure and humor intertwined quite nicely. And that's from a person who vehemently dislikes clowns.
Three short stories! We learn much more about Belladonna and her familial duty that she wants no part of. And Crowley who used to be her beau. Colin is fighting clowns/goblins in another with a boy who is just as sarcastic as Colin. And in another story, Colin returns Hemi's body to his Maori mother. All great stories to fill in the characters we've already met. Loved them!
This book should be read after Underground Druid book 4 of the Junkyard Druid series, ideally this book could be read between Druid Justice book 5 and Druid Enforcer book 6. I really liked this book it answers questions to who Derp and Kenny are, the truth behind Belladonna's family and how Hemi came back from the dead.
Fills in the blanks about Hemi’s death and return!
A few short stories to fill in the blanks in between the series books. Before each story he tells you there are spoilers and suggests which books to read first, which I really liked. If you’re reading the series, which I highly recommend, this is a must read after book four!
The 3 Novellas fill in the gaps of what happened once Hemi and Colin got back from the trip to Underhill and while Colin was on his adventures, he did what he could to bring HDMI’s body back to his mother’s house. Lucky his Mother is a Deity that can bring her son back to life.
Short and sweet, nice additions to the story arcs. I am thoroughly enjoying this series, though knowing I only have one left to read is a bit depressing. Fans of Jim Butcher and Kevin Herne will love this series.
It wasn’t bad. It could be I just don’t care for Belladonna, but the stories didn’t grab me. I read them because the latest full length novel confused me and I needed backstory
Fun Series, a little bit heavy with language and adult themes, but that was clearly stated by the author in the first book when he made this for College level and above. But a great premise and story line.
Biddy. Not "Old Bitty". That's just dumb. How do you miss something like that. Anyway, it was interesting to know what BS Crowley is up to behind the Druid's back. I'm sure he'll betray Colin soon enough.
Great book. I was reading one of these books and realized that I had missed some backstory. Checked out the possibilities, and found the novellas. Am now caught up and busy reading more of this excellent series.
MD Massey's body of work continues to grow on me. Three novellas that improves upon the basic story line and improves upon it. Worth the money to pick up
I love that you allowed us to see into the outer parts of the book. I love the adventure with Bells and Hemi. Cant wait to see what's next for Colin and the gang.
Loved the Stories, Especially about Hemi's mom. I'll be waiting to see what more kind Trouble the boys get into lol. And YES READ THE FULL BOOK'S FIRST.
meh couple of short stories some average some lil bove average... cheesy circus one that is prequel to junkyard druid some nice filler on belladonna though
