A solid spin-off of Elves classic fantasy series from Soleil.
Storyline was nearly a sort of Conan the Barbarian's Red Nails retelling with an orc waking up in a city insulated and infested with ghouls, artworks are excellent ones, and main characters are deliciously evil ones.
A must read if Dungeons & Dragons and/or Warcraft inspired comic books are your cup of tea.

4.5 🌟 Richtig toller erster Band! Super gezeichnet und mit mal etwas anderen Protagonisten. Ich mochte vorallem das Ende echt gerne. Ich bin sehr gespannt auf die nächsten Bände!
Ich fand auch sehr gut, dass in diesem Band (mal zur Abwechslung zu den anderen Arran Bänden) die weibliche Protagonistin nicht so sehr sexualisiert wurde / nicht nackt gezeigt wurde.

Orcs and Goblins is part of an excellent French comic about fantasy characters. This first volume follows the adventures of Turuk of the Orcs.
Turuk wakes up injured and unable to remember what the hell happened to him. He is stuck in the middle of what seems to be a deserted city (it's not deserted) and stumbles across a deadly secret. The city is infested with a zombie plague. Meeting up with two other Orc warriors and a seriously pissed off Elven prison warden, tasked with capturing the trio of orcs, this unlikely team struggle to survive against a horde of zombies in a strange city. There, no more spoilers!
Good art, good story and great characters. This top-notch series stands apart in that the fantasy setting is at once familiar to anyone with a passing knowledge of fantasy settings, but the story/characters have a unique feeling as well. This is a comic, due to it being French in origin, that may have flown under the radar of many other readers. Don't let it be that way. Highly recommended to any fan of fantasy!

For someone who already enjoyes the "Elves" series of Soleil this is a natural addition. Orcs & Gobelins Vol. 1 was also writen by Jean-Luc Istin who already created most of the "Elves" stories.
Even if you did not read the original series, this spin-off might have some appeal. Just like the film "Warcraft", it tells the story from the perspective of an Orc. This narrative point of view seems pretty obvious, now that it has been done. But maybe it was not that obvious.
The ways orcs are represented classically does not allow them to have individuality, much less a personal will or a mind, or any moral conlifcts whatsoever. They are not individuals, they form a mass of evil creatures. They do not personify evil, since they are not personas. They are minions, mindless monsters who have to act on their own impulsive to destroy. In Warcraft, the orc has a life of his owns, and feelings and thinking and subltety. But even if an orc is still as wicked as it was intended initially, to put the point of view in his self allows for an interesting twist. It shock with our leftist multiculti dogma that says that "if we listen to someone else's story told in the first person" we will drop our previous misconceptions and most likely accept who they are. Well, we don't have to accept someone's views just because it's theirs, certainly not a killer's. But to have his point of view can still produce insights. Of course: this is entertainment. But ideology and culture are everywhere, in everything human.

Acheté pour offrir à mon copain, qui est plus Fantasy que moi, je l'ai lu par curiosité et... j'ai adoré !!
J'ai beaucoup aimé le personnage de Turuk et la fin. Ainsi que l'univers, certains lieux, evenements et noms sont cités ce qui m'a donné envie de lire les autres tomes !
L'avantage de cet univers si j'ai bien compris c'est que les tomes peuvent se lire dans le désordre comme on le souhaite car c'est des one shot même s'il y a des références à d'autres tomes. Il y a plusieurs "séries" : Nains, Elfes, Mages et cettr nouvelle série Orcs et gobelins.
Super découverte, je pense m'en offrir d'autres ! 😍 les dessins sont de qualités et l'objet livre est très beau. On sent qu'une attention a été portée à la couverture, la reliure et au papier (ce qui n'est pas le cas de toutes les BD, donc bon à relever !)

December 13, 2025Turuk m'a semblé original pour un orc. J'aime bien les dessins et l'ambiance très soignée, le tout avec une certaine dose d'humour... J'apprécie particulièrement le fait que cette histoire se suffit en elle-même. Pas besoin d'avoir la série Elfes ou Nains pour lire cette BD qui se veut également indépendante des autres titres de la série Orcs & Gobelins...

This was a compelling, fast-moving tale with strong suspense.
It starts out with mystery — amnesiac orc Turuk awakes in a deserted town with no idea where he is or how he got there. He proceeds to investigate, climbing a hilltop, and discovers he’s on an island. He is shot at by a mysterious archer. He takes refuge in a hovel only to find it filled with ravenous ghouls. He escapes and builds himself a refuge in a high tower, similar to I am Legend. All this makes for a page-turning opening sequence as Turuk fights for survival.

We eventually learn that Turuk escaped from an elven prison. The archer is one of the guards, come to hunt him down. The two orcs he meets are his comrades and former cell-mates. They all ‘team up to fight the ghouls and try to escape the island. In a library, they discover a map showing a dwarven tunnel beneath the sea that leads to another island. They also find the source of the ghouls — an infected ship that brought a plague that overran the town. With the main mysteries answered, the story shifts into action mode. The characters now know what to do and have to implement their plan. The goal is simple — escape. But it doesn’t go well, of course.
One of the orcs is eaten defending a gateway, and Turuk trips the other to distract a mob of ghouls, enabling his own escape. Turuk and the elf battle their way through tunnels and catacombs, and eventually ditch the ghouls after leaping a chasm. Turuk attempts to seduce the elf maiden, but she betrays him as he betrayed his orc pal and leaves him to face a cave beast alone. The book ends on a cliffhanger but we know the crafty and unscrupulous Turuk somehow survives.
This was an exciting, well-crafted story of survival. The use of amnesia to create mystery is well-implemented here. (But even without that, the mysterious island would have been enough. For instance starting with the dragon duel above the city and Turuk crashing. It would play out largely the same, but not with the same twilight zone eeriness.) The revelations are very well paced, as is the escalating action. Everything builds in intensity. The story keeps throwing new things so it never gets dull. The character moments woven in are also effective. And having an evil, but not entirely unlikeable, protagonist was an interesting change, appropriate for an orc.
Great art and storytelling. Nothing ostentatious but brings the scenario to life.

Je suis une fan de bandes dessinées et c’est avec un grand plaisir que j’ai découvert le premier tome de cette série. J’adore ce genre d’univers, je n’ai donc eu aucun mal à me plonger dedans.

Nous découvrons donc un orc, Turuk, dont l’opus lui est consacré. Personnage central, il sera notre fil rouge durant cette aventure. Blessé et amnésique, il se réveille dans une ville déserte… enfin, de prime abord, car à la nuit tombée, les rues se gorgent de goules qui ne rêvent que de le manger. Poursuivi par une elfe puis retrouvé par deux de ses congénères, le petit groupe cherche à quitter l’île. La trame de l’histoire est agréable et se tient. L’univers m’a grandement fait penser à World of Warcraft, et j’ai suivi cette aventure avec plaisir et attention.

L’auteur fait preuve d’humour et d’un langage très familier, qui m’a permis de me transporter dans cette aventure sans problème. J’ai vraiment adoré Turuk, cet orc calculateur et mesquin. Il n’hésite pas à sacrifier ses amis pour sauver sa peau, un vrai salopard.

Les illustrations sont vraiment incroyables. Le souci du détail est appuyé et c’est un régal pour les yeux. La couverture est sublime, tout comme la carte qui tapisse l’intérieur de la BD.

J’ai passé un excellent moment de lecture, visuel comme littéraire, et j’en suis ressortie frustrée de ne pas avoir la suite !

Świat Akwilonu to bezsprzecznie jedno z największych komiksowych uniwersów fantasy, jakie do tej pory powstało. Świadczą o tym nie tylko dziesiątki różnych wydanych albumów, ale również ilość ras zamieszkujących ten świat. Czytelnicy serii mieli już okazję poznać losy długouchych elfów, dzielnych ludzi i gburowatych brodatych krasnoludów. Pora więc spojrzeć na tę krainę oczami zupełnie innej strony.
W albumie Świat Akwilonu: Orki i gobliny tom 1 śledzimy losy orka Turuka. Pewnego dnia mocno obolały, budzi się on pośrodku całkowicie opustoszałego ludzkiego miasta. Kompletnie nie pamięta on, jak się znalazł w tym miejscu, ani co mogło stać się z mieszkańcami. Tajemnica ta powoduje u niego jeszcze intensywniejszy ból głowy. Na dodatek szybko przeradza się w coś gorszego. Coś, co będzie wymagać od orka chwycenia oręża i pokazania, jaki z niego jest wyśmienity wojownik.
Nowa część serii trzyma się przyjętej podstawowej koncepcji twórców tego uniwersum. Mamy więc tu do czynienia z albumem, który można czytać zupełnie niezależnie od pozostałych dostępnych na rynku cyklów. Cała historia ma dość zamkniętą formę, jej początek jest mocno intrygujący, przykuwając uwagę czytelnika, końcówka zaś na tyle ciekawa, aby zachęcić go do sięgnięcia po kolejną odsłonę.
Podstawę całego scenariusza stanowi tu oczywiście mocna i wyrazista akcja. Dopiero do tego dołożono pewną niezłą tajemnicę. Trzeba być jednak świadom tego, że jest ona jedynie dodatkiem do scen, w których główny bohater wraz z niezwykłym towarzyszem walczy o życie, pokonując pojawiające się zastępy krwiożerczych wrogów. Pewna prostota scenariuszowa nie odbiera jednak komiksowi wyrazistości, a fabuła dzieła potrafi zaangażować i zapewnić należytą dawkę rozrywki....

No esperaba nada, pero tengo que reconocer que los franceses siempre han entendido los cómics.
Conocía Elfos y conocía Enanos, sospechaba que compartían un universo pero no tenía noticia de Orcs and gobelins. Ha sido una sorpresa de los más agradable.
Esto es un BD ENORME, que tiene dos historias autoconclusivas y que a diferencia de muchas de las historias de las otras dos series mencionadas, no tienen mucho que ver entre ellas aunque suceden en el mismo universo.
El guión es bastante decente, con una prosa de lo más conseguida (aunque se te tuerza el gesto con algunas cositas que parecen escritas por señoros bastante alejados de la fantasía. Pocas veces). La sensación de que estás leyendo sobre canallas y que no hay lugar aquí para el honor mi la camaradería está lograda. Oye que me ha gustado mucho.
Pero el dibujo, sobre todo el de la primera historia, la de Turuk, mi favorita de las dos, ha sido un antes y un después para mí. Hacía tiempo que no veía una línea tan cuidada y tanto respeto a los segundos y a los terceros planos más allá de lo que se quiere mostrar. Los fondos y la atención al detalle son para detenerse e inspirarse.
Joder. Ahora quiero escribir algo sobre orcos.

Davvero una bella storia. Gli Orchi sono una delle razze malevole del fantasy, ma approfondite come si deve. Questi fumetti, che raccontano storie di orchi e goblin, vogliono mostrare al pubblico anche l'altra faccia del fantasy: irriverente, cinica, egoista, passionale e crudele ma non priva di sentimenti e valori. In particolare, Turuk, è anche scaltro, intelligente e non particolarmente brutto per essere un orco. La sua storia mi ha ricordato molto il genere sword and sorcery e uno dei racconti brevi di Conan.
Ero curioso e sono rimasto piacevolmente soddisfatto. Approfondire gli Orchi e i Goblin m'interessa e continuerò a leggerli.

J'ai pris cette BD pour en savoir plus sur cet univers.
Visuellement plaisante, mais en terme de découverte de l'univers j'ai beaucoup de blanc qui je pense se combleront en lisant les autres livres de l'univers des Terres d'Arran.
En tout cas l'aventure que Turuk vit est palpitante.

I liked it but it was already long ago when I had seen him in the elves it is difficult to keep track of all the stories and to remember what happened next because I had already read 25 elves-comics.

Je l'ais pris au hazard, normalement ce genre ne fait pas mon style. Mais, quelle bonne surprise. Le scenario évite les lieux communs, et les personages sont plus complexe que leurs stéreotypes. Le dessin est aussi propre, et vive.

I really like Orcs :) This was a great story about one who'd woken up with no memory in an empty city, only to be shot at and attacked by the undead. It had a good pace and a nice twist at the end. I definitely want to read more of this series.

Cykl one-shotów o orkach i goblinach zapowiada się bardzo ciekawie i dobrze uzupełnia Świat Akwilonu. Pierwszy tom to solidna przygodówka o ucieczce i pościgu. Ciekawi bohaterowie w dobrze opowiedzianej historii.

Un premier tome sympa, même si j'ai trouvé l'histoire peut-être plus anecdotique que dans d'autres séries comme Elfes ou Nains. Cependant, les planches sont toujours à tomber et c'est très divertissant.

Непогана спроба ще раз розширити всесвіт Аррана, вивівши на перший план другорядних антагоністів основної серії. Тюрюк виглядає об'ємним персонажем, хай навіть про нього нам мало що розповідають. Вся справа в подачі тексту "від автора". Вона більш приземлена та гнучка, заціпеніння, властивого історіям про морських ельфів, тут вже немає. Історія тримається в контексті основних подій серії, в наявності також досить жвава реакція персонажів на обставини, що змінюються.

J'ai acheté cette BD sur un coup de tête, simplement parce que le design des personnages sur la couverture me plaisait énormément. Et je n'ai pas été déçue.
Ce premier tome de Orcs & Gobelins était génial. J'adore la personnalité de Turuk et la manière dont on s'attache au personnage malgré son "mauvais" fond.
Cela m'a donné envie de lire la suite et j'ai même foncé acheter le tome 1 de Elfes par le même auteur. J'ai hâte d'en découvrir plus sur les Terres d'Arran!
