The story begins with Chiyuki Fujito, an aspiring supermodel who dreams of walking the runways of Paris. Unfortunately, her height is far too short to fit into the clothes made by most runway designers. She recruits her overlooked classmate, Ikuto, to make fashionable clothing for her to model. However, the story quickly shifts focus to Ikuto, making him the lead character. Despite this, the manga captures the challenges and ambitions of both characters.
Given the subject matter, I did not expect this to have its origins from a manga magazine targeted at a boys' demographic. I mean, top favorite shonen manga character occupation might be pirate, demon slayer, sorcerer, or assassin. I just never expected it to be fashion designer.
However, it made sense because it had the earmarks of a shonen manga story.
It has an underdog story with an extended training arc, a rival, and a tournament arc. All staples of shonen manga. Definitely, it's indeed interesting.

Very interesting and new concept for a manga. This world can be both fascinating and brutal and this is exactly how both sides are described in this first volume.
I found it a little rushed in some parts, there are some time jumps here and there and I think some key scenes were shortened too much.
I liked the fashion glossary at the end of each chapter and how the story is evolving for both characters.

Untuk vol.1-nya dulu~ (*´▽`*)ﾉ
Awalnya ndakminat ngerti dengan judul ini, tapi gara-gara pas libur-ganti-tahun aku baca ulang War of Roses yang bikin membaraa (✧ω✧) lalu pas tau komik ini juga membahas dunia yang sama, aku yang lagi 'kasmaran' pun nekat menukik dan menyambar komik ini di tokbuk~ *guguk langsung dikandangkan*
Gambarnya oke dan manis, ceritanya .... sedikit kurang sesuai harapanku, mungkin karena aku masih mabuk Makoto ya ｡ﾟ(;^∀^ﾟ)ﾟ｡ begitu lihat Chiyuki yang tipe nona besar dan bersikap seenaknya ke Ikuto itu rasanya langsung ( ` ω ´ ) "Issh!!"

...yang tekun dan jadi penjahit buat adik-adiknya ini bikin (ಥ﹏ಥ)❤
Tapi walaupun awalnya sebel dengan Chiyuki, rasanya sifat seperti itu cocok dengan dia yang tumbuh bergelimang fasilitas ya.., sehingga saat ada yang menghalangi mimpinya, dia bisa dengan percaya diri bilang, "Pokoknya aku mau itu!"
Di pihak lain, Ikuto yang berjuang di keluarga pas-pasan, harus kerja dan bantu jaga adik, ini dengan wajar merasa bahwa ia 'tidak berhak' memimpikan pekerjaan dan pendidikan lanjutan yang dia inginkan. Sikap ragu-ragu dan merendahnya jadi bukan lagi bikin gemas-gemas-kesal, tapi membangkitkan rasa simpati "Berjuanglah, Ikuto!!" \(^ヮ^)/

Setelah sampai vol.8 .... (ﾉ´ヮ`)ﾉ*: ･ﾟ BAGUS BANGET!! Bintangnya ditambah sampe polll!!
Walau di sini memasang dua tokoh utama: Ikkun dan Chiyuki, tapi bintang Ikkun lebih bersinar! (✧ω✧)
Kalau di komik Topeng Kaca, Ikkun ini ibaratnya Maya Kitajima. Kalau di Slam Dunk, Ikkun ini jadi Hanamichi Sakuragi (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ Pemula yang maju terus pantang mundur!
Tentunya di sini Ikkun dan Chiyuki tidak bersaing 1 on 1, karena beda bidang. Ikkun sebagai desainer dan Chiyuki sebagai model. Hanya saja dua-duanya menghadapi tantangan yang nyaris mustahil: Ikkun dengan kondisi ekonominya dan Chiyuki dengan kondisi fisik yang kurang tinggi.
Melihat perjuangan Chiyuki tadinya ngga asyik (≧◡≦;) //gaksopan
Soalnya, dengankesongongan keanggunan khas anak pemilik agensi yang sudah tentu punya harta dan punya jaringan/koneksi, Chiyuki seakan tidak bisa menerima kata "tidak". Tapi setelah ke mana-mana menebalkan muka ikut audisi walau tingginya tidak mencukupi, kata "tidak" ini terasa sangat pahit. Apalagi melihat Ikkun yang pontang-panting berusaha belajar desain sambil kerja sambilan menopang keluarga. "Masa aku kalah??"
Di pihak lain, Ikkun tidak berpikir yang susah-susah, dia cuma ingin jadi desainer dan membahagiakan ibu dan adik-adiknya (つω`｡) Susahnya, keadaan ekonomi susah ini yang akhirnya bikin dia susah berpikir dan belajar. Tiap kali Ikkun kejedot tembok tantangan, rasanya pembaca ikut mengaduh.
Tokoh lainnya yang menarik antara lain editor yang bercita-cita jadi editor sastra tapi malah terjerumus jadi editor fashion. Lalu ada si Kokoro, model tinggi semampai yang punya cita-cita lain. Rasanya komik ini ingin menampilkan bahwa cita-citamu itu ada karena kamu INGIN. Bukan karena "wah kebetulan jalannya begitu, hehehe" (ಥ﹏ಥ) Jadi ada rasa pedih~

Dibaca gratis dalam rangka MAL x Kodansha comics (sampai 29 Feb).
Anyw saya juga memilih judul ini karena ingat komiknya terbit di Indonesia. Satu-satunya yang tidak saya sangka adalah... BUJU BUSETTT KOMIKNYA MASIH OG DI JEPUN DAN SUDAH 10++ VOL. WASEMM XD //sayapikir2voltamat //plekkk.
Baca sinopsisnya langsung, ya^^.
Bisa dibilang, komik ini sudut pandangnya dibagi berdasarkan Chiyuki dan Ikuto. Tapi kurasa chapter selanjutnya akan terus fokus ke Ikuto, karena sepertinya memang dialah tokoh utama sesungguhnya (?) //semogasaja.
Hubungan Chiyuki-Ikuto dipupuk dengan lumayanmembuat saya, "Errrr," cepat tapi tetap enak dibaca. Kurasa itu karena sifat keduanya kontras dan saling memercik. Chiyuki yang tegas an Ikuto yang terlalu lemah lembut. Perpaduan yang pas ya^^.
Saat sampai di chapter penghujung, saya sudah memutuskan untuk drop komik ini dan membacanya suatu saat jika memang dapat pinjaman^^. Jadi review ini benar-benar sesuai dengan nomor komiknya! Haha!
Tokoh Ikuto (si rambut jamur ini) sangat likeable. Aaaaaawww dia manis sekali! Saya bahkan tidak begitu peduli pada Chiyuki, tapi ikutan merasa sedih saat Ikuto menghadapi industri fashion yang tegas. Tapi jujur saja, saya tidak suka drama ala komik-komiknya dimana tokohnya mesti diinjak-injak dulu baru bisa semangat.
Tapi pendapat saya juga mungkin karena terlalu membela Ikuto. Mau bagaimana lagi, dia manis sekali (sejauh vol ini) （・∀・）(●´∀｀●).

Un manga qui est classé comme shojo et qui pourtant est clairement un shonen, seulement parce qu’il parle de mode. Pourtant, je peux vous le dire, il n’est pas question d’histoire d’amour ici. Mais plutôt d’une jeune fille qui veut devenir top model, malgré sa petite taille.
En effet, Chiyuki est une jeune adolescente qui rêve de devenir top model. Son père est à la tête d’une agence de mode et de ce fait, depuis son plus jeune âge, elle rêve de défiler à Paris.
Petit souci, à 10 ans elle faisait 1m58, sauf que depuis… Elle n’a plus du tout grandis. Tout le monde lui dit qu’être top model avec une taille pareille, c’est impossible. Chiyuki ne veut pourtant rien entendre de ça. C’est son rêve et pour elle, si elle le souhaite et s’en donne les moyens, elle pourra y arriver, sa petite taille ne sera plus un handicap.
C’est alors qu’elle rencontre un garçon de sa classe : Ikuto. Lui, rêve de devenir styliste, mais malgré son talent, n’a clairement pas les moyens d’aller dans une école adaptée. Sauf qu’évidemment, il sait au fond de lui que c’est impossible de devenir styliste sans diplôme. Pourtant, sa rencontre avec Chiyuki pourrait bien lui faire changer d’avis.
J’ai beaucoup aimé le message d’espoir transmis dans ce manga. Pourquoi il faudrait avoir des restrictions types, pour pouvoir être dans un domaine ou dans un autre ? Le talent ne suffirait pas ?
Pourtant, c’est ce que Chiyuki veut relever comme défi. Pour elle, si tu as le talent, qu’importe les diplômes, la taille ou toutes autres restrictions qui te font face. Tu deviendras ce que tu veux, car tu en as le talent et non parce que tu en as les caractéristiques.
En bref, c’est un manga vraiment prenant et pleins d’espoir. J’aime beaucoup aimer les personnages de Chiyuki et Ikuto. Des jeunes adolescents pleins d’espoir et qui veulent réaliser leur rêve, qu’importe les obstacles. Un manga qui promet beaucoup !

The story itself reminded me of Gokinjou Monogatari one way or another. But unlike Gokinjou Monogatari, the story in Smile Down the Runway goes into much deeper into the life of a fashion design student and the fashion industry in general.
Sure, the story doesn't feel that way at first. But after Ikuto begins his apprenticeship under Yanagida and takes part in the fashion design competition organized by the top fashion design school, that's when things start to get interesting.
Is the fashion design school in real life is just as hectic as the one being portrayed in the manga? It seems to be true based on the Youtuber Mikan's experience when she was still enrolled in Bunka Fashion School.
For some people, the manga may seem like a story about someone's determination and perseverance to achieve their dream. But the manga also touches upon the actual situation that happens in the fashion design school and fashion industry. Unless you know someone who enrolled in the fashion design school, you may feel like the story in the manga is nothing but a hype-up drama.
If you're looking for the inside scoop of the fashion design school and the fashion industry in Japan, this manga is the closest thing you can get.

Let’s just think of this as what might have happened if Takeshi Obata (Hikaru no Go, Death Note, Bakuman, etc.) had been chosen to draw something like Princess Jellyfish or Skip Beat. This series has the feel of a sports manga, so I can’t say it’s emotionally resonant like other fashion-savvy series like Paradise Kiss or Princess Jellyfish. It kinda feels soulless at this point, at least to me, and the characters are pretty hit and miss. But I’ll check out the next volume or try a few episodes of the new anime once it starts airing.

J'ai hâte de lire la suite

Le manga vient de finir et je le commence enfin. J’avoue que je ne le vois pas souvent passer sur mon feed Instagram mais quand cela arrive, c’est toujours de bons avis. Du coup, je me suis lancée dans l’aventure.
Tout d’abord, j’adore les couvertures de ce manga. Je les trouve originale avec leur style couverture de magasines. J’ai bien aimé le style des dessins aussi, avec des traits plutôt fins. Au niveau de l’histoire, on se concentre sur Chiyuki qui rêve d’être mannequin. Je l’ai trouvé parfois un petit peu énervante dans son comportement mais je suis sûre que cela va évoluer et qu’elle va devenir plus mature à travers les volumes donc pas d’inquiétudes à ce niveau-là. J’ai beaucoup apprécié le personnage d’Ikuto et j’espère vraiment qu’il va réussir. J’ai hâte de lire la suite.
Je recommande à toute personne qui préfère une histoire basée sur les personnages plutôt que l’intrigue.

Je dois bien admettre que ce qui m’a donné envie de découvrir ce manga, c’est la couverture, dans un esprit de magazine de mode que j’ai trouvé très sympa !
Chiyuki est une jeune fille de 17 ans. Depuis sa plus tendre enfance, elle rêve d’être mannequin. Mais si son avenir semblait tout tracé, elle va vite se retrouver face à un obstacle : sa taille.
Ne mesurant « que » 1,58m, tout son entourage lui conseille d’arrêter de se voiler la face et d’oublier son rêve. C’est très mal la connaître puisque quand elle a une idée en tête, difficile de la faire changer d’avis…
Elle va faire la connaissance d’Ikuto au lycée, un jeune homme réservé mais qu’elle va découvrir passionné de stylisme. Leur collaboration a de belles heures devant elle…
Un premier tome qui met en place l’histoire et ses personnages. J’ai beaucoup apprécié et vais enchaîner tout de suite avec la lecture du tome 2 qui est déjà en ma possession ! ♥

There is something... off about this book.
That thought stuck with me throughout the entirety of my reading. And I am just not sure what it is. Reading this gave me that same uncanny valley feeling you get from looking at a not-quite-correct image of a person. Where your brain knows something is not quite right but can't actually pick out anything in particular that is off.
The story itself is kind of just a less nerdy version of My Dress-Up Darling, Vol. 1. With that series is focused on Cosplay while this one focuses on more mainstream high fashion. It still got the dynamic duo of designer and model working together to make their dream come true. But everyone is kind of mean and entitled the whole time.
I just... Something is off about this book.

I'm not really sure how to rate this one.
What is with the pacing? And it almost feels like there are huge scenes missing?
Like we never get to see Chiyuki trying out for those other agencies or doing the photo shoot that she did on the street. That would have been the more interesting parts to see. If Chiyuki is one of the main character I want to see her working hard to achieve her goals.
Although, she doesn't need to work hard. Because shes a nepo baby. -_- Chiyuki is really annoying and I really don't like her.
Also we just skip straight to the big fashion show and it doesn't feel earned at all? For being published in a Shonen magazine, it doesn't have a shonen spirit at all. Where are the scenes of them working hard, training their skills, taking on challenges.
I guess the art is cute if generic looking. And Ikuto and his interactions with his community seem interesting.
Definitely not picking back up again.

It's exciting because there's a real conflict and goal.
One model, despite the talent, has physical limitations. She knows what she wants and fights for it better than anyone through hardwork, persistence and grit.
The other model has it all but lacks confidence.
One designer has talent but is poor and lacks connection, he finds the resolve to persevere thanks to the model's influence.
It's inspiring for someone who has to deal with designs as well.
Not totally at peace with the ending of the season 1 yet. I still can't accept the winner but I understand that the story needs it.

Prima di tutto, i disegni sono stupendi! La storia è altrettanto interessante e coinvolgente. Ho trovato molto utili anche le spiegazioni fornite alla fine di ogni capitolo sui termini specifici del mondo della moda. L'ultimo capitolo presenta un cliff-hanger che mi ha lasciato con la forte curiosità di leggere subito il secondo volume.
I absolutely loved this book! The drawings are incredible, and the story is just as fascinating. I also found the explanations at the end of each chapter on fashion terms super helpful. The last chapter left me dying to read the second volume right away!

Allora, come primo volume, devo dire che mi è piaciuto abbastanza. Il mondo della moda non ha mai catturato troppo il mio interesse, però questa è una storia di crescita che va ben oltre un ambito specifico. E' una storia che invita a inseguire i propri sogni anche quando questi sembrano impossibili, che invita a cogliere tutte le opportunità e a non lasciarsi spaventare dalle sfide, Recupererò sicuramente anche l'anime e poi vedrò se andare avanti anche con il manga. Le serie in corso che sto seguendo sono sempre di più e lo spazio a disposizione sta finendo rapidamente, però sono stata contenta di aver dato una possibilità a questo primo volume.

Les thématiques autour de la création de vêtements et du mannequinnat sont originales. Les deux héros sont sympathiques, mais rien de transcendant à ce stade. L'histoire les présente comme devant faire face à des challenges car ils ne correspondent pas aux attentes habituelles mais en même temps, on leur ouvre facilement les portes dans ce premier tome. Je n'ai accroché ni au découpage des cases ni aux dessins, mais l'histoire a l'air d'avoir du potentiel.

Un manga sulla moda che è preciso, ricco, studiato, ben disegnato e con un target giovane??? Non ho parole per esprimere la contentezza di aver scoperto questa perla. I protagonisti sono dolcissimi e caratteri che si compensano perfettamente, con un ottimo ritmo sia dialogico che narrativo. Secondo me un manga che promette ottime cose, soprattutto per amanti della moda. Non ero così contento da paradise kiss.

Chiuki on haaveillut pienestä tytöstä lähtien huippumallin urasta ja siitä, että pääsisi esiintymään Pariisin muotiviikoilla mallina. Ikävä kyllä unelmiin tulee mutka vastaan, kun Chiuki ei kasvakan 160 senttiä pidemmäksi. Voiko lyhyestä mutta muuten huippumallinvartaloisesta tytöstä tulla oikeaa mallia?

Malgré un personnage principal un peu énervant sur le début du tome, j'ai été happée par cette histoire ! Les encarts donnant des détails sur le monde de la mode, ses codes et ses termes sont super intéressant même si en tant qu'adulte j'en connais une partie j'ai appris beaucoup de chose.

Une très bonne lecture ! J'aime beaucoup le fait que l'univers de la mode et des top models soit utilisé dans un manga. Je n'ai pas apprécié le personnage de Chiyuki. Par contre, j'ai adoré Ikuto et son histoire. Je poursuivrai cette série, rien que pour voir jusqu'où il va arriver !

Not awful, but not quite the thing for me, I believe. It was sold to me as "the Shonen spirit but about the fashion industry", and it is an accurate description, but I overestimated the appeal either of these aspects would have to me at this time. Maybe later.
