Can a lawman witch find love with an outlaw familiar?
After weeks spent tracking down the gentleman bandit Rafael, Hexas Ranger Enoch Bright finally has the outlaw in his sights. He doesn’t expect to find out Rafael is his familiar.
When Enoch runs afoul of the murderous Bone Gang, he and Rafael strike a deal to take down the gang together. As lawman and outlaw work together, Enoch soon realizes the next thing the gentleman bandit steals will be his heart.
Jordan L. Hawk is a trans author from North Carolina. Childhood tales of mountain ghosts and mysterious creatures gave him a life-long love of things that go bump in the night. When he isn’t writing, he brews his own beer and tries to keep the cats from destroying the house. His best-selling Whyborne & Griffin series (beginning with Widdershins) can be found in print, ebook, and audiobook.
This novella is much too short but fast paced, fun, and creative.
The relationship between Enoch, the lawman, and Rafael, his hawk familiar, took a back seat to the action, as the two men went chasing after a gang of bad guys who planned to hijack a train.
I still love the Hexworld series, but wanted more character and relationship development, as well as a stronger ending.
This was super fun and super short. I'm having a blast in the Hexworld and this wild west addition was another awesome addition to this series. Sweet, sexy and speedy!
Charming short extending Hexworld out to the Wild, Wild West. Rafael the Hawk, Enoch the Black Ranger...how will Author Hawk weave y'all into the main Hexworld story? And, more to the point, WHEN?!
Also: 3 (three) w-bombs, not one of 'em necessary.
A Hexas ranger temporarily teams up with a criminal slash vigilante to catch a band of outlaws. Let it be known, that the ranger is doing all this under duress, while the outlaw is taking shaneless advantage of the witch's injury. Cue witty dialogue, exciting action scenes and a hot outdoor sex scene.
I guess I can now safely conclude that the author's short stories are not my cup of tea. While I do, intellectually, appreciate the attempt to expand the Hexworld universe, the side characters just don't do it for me. Well, the ones not directly involved in the thread of the main story, don't.
Score: 1.3/5 stars
With A Christmas Hex I could at least appreciate the hot-n-heavy action, but in Wild Wild Hex not even that held my attention. Dropped at the 50% mark, despite its small page count.
It was great seeing how witches and familiars worked outside of an urban area. I also loved the fact that Ms Hawk gave us a black MC as a witch, and a Latino MC as an unbounded familiar.
The witch is past of the US Marshall’s “Hexas Rangers” and is seeking the Gentleman Bandit, a Robin Hood type criminal. He finds him only to discover that Rafael is his familiar. Not quite trusting each other, they decide to hunt down the notorious and deadly Bone Gand down.
This was a fun Western to read which included some sexy time in the dessert, and a train robbery to boot!
This is a quick short set in the Hexworld universe but out in the American Wild West rather than New York.
It's very much got a different feel to the story as it's all horses and bandit gangs and it's a fast but believable romance.
I loved Rafael and Enoch, Harris's Hawks are a fascinating bird of prey as it hunts in packs instead of alone and it suited Rafael's nature perfectly that it was the form he took as a familiar.
I'd love more in the Hexas Rangers part of the world.
Set in the same time period as the other Hexwold cases but this one takes place in United States. Enoch is a marshal with the Hexas Rangers (that's funny) and he's trying to capture Rafael who is a Robin Hood kind of anti-hero. They meet and Rafael throws Enoch for a loop by telling him that's he's his familiar.
The book was short but was filled with story from the beginning to the end. Lot's of adventure and a bit of romance. I really liked this and I'd love to see more books in this series set here.
A highly entertaining and fun adventure set within the Hexworld universe by Jordan L. Hawk. Readers are able to step outside the hustle and bustle of metro New York City and into the wild and lawless West with Wild Wild Hex.
Enoch Bright works for the US Marshals, Magical Law Enforcement Division, more colloquially known as the Hexas Rangers. He's got witch potential, but no familiar, so he doesn't take on any particularly important cases. But when his posse gets left behind, Enoch is left to bring in the Gentleman Bandit, Rafael, on his own. Rafael is a familiar, a lonely hawk with a murky past. He roams the territories as a sort of dusty Robin Hood, looking out for families and ranchers in dire situations who would otherwise perish without the aid of the Gentleman Bandit. When he and Enoch meet, there is definitely a mutual sizzle of attraction between them.
But more than the desire to bed one another, Rafael is looking for help in taking down the bloodthirsty Bone Gang. And after Enoch recently ran afoul with the group of murders and thieves, the two temporarily teaming up may be the best, if not only way, to strike some law and order in the Wild West.
Much like The 13th Hex was a fast, yet highly enjoyable short that introduced us to this beloved world, Wild Wild Hex could easily be the start of a western spin-off, should Hawk have any interest in pursuing this angle of storytelling. Introducing US Marshal characters to counteract the urban hierarchy of the MWP could be a very interesting spinoff! The dirt, grit, wildness, and overall location are very strong in this short, one of the many draws Hawk's writing has for me. They have a true talent at making the setting an interactive character. I felt transported to this desert territory-- could feel the heat, taste the dry air. And without spoilers, the train scene was one hell of a fantastic ride!
I really adored this story, and I'm so thankful I have a physical copy from GRL that I can keep on my bookshelf with the rest of my treasured Hexworld reads. If you've not partaken in this story, I recommend this thrilling and romantic tale between Enoch and Rafael!
A short story set in the WIld Wild West. Enoch is a witch who is also a Hexas Ranger and his familiar is an outlaw called Raphael. For a short story there was alot of action and some romance. Just wish it had been longer.
Deputy Marshals, Magical Law Enforcement Division (or most well known as "Hexas Ranger") Enoch Bride is on the chase of Rafael The Gentleman Bandit, when he discovers two things ... a gang that is more dangerous than Rafael, who is involved in killing a bank teller ... and the fact that Rafael is his familiar.
I thought this was a fun short-story set in the Wild Wild West of Hexworld universe. I liked that the author brings the story out of New York. I'd love to read more characters consist of Hexas Rangers, or other law enforcement divisions.
I'm unsure whether to give this 3 or 4 stars; Hawk's greatest strength isn't short stories and this standalone is both one of her better efforts and personally delightful. I love westerns and combining that with the Hexworld was really enjoyable.
It's not without its flaws though. Firstly, it's one of Hawk's better shorts because it's more or less a novel plot with most of the obstacles removed. That doesn't make it less enjoyable, but it does make it feel kind of glib.
Also, Enoch Bright is a Black lawman and Rafael is a Mexican bandit in the Old West. The story is small enough in scope that racism didn't need to be a major plotline, but its absence felt conspicuous. Maybe not so much in their interaction with each other, but in their interactions with others, and it felt missing from their internal life somehow. Again, it felt glib.
I REALLY liked this story and I'm hoping very much that Hawk is inspired to write other stories in the West. I love the Hexworld stories but the change of location made it even better.
As always I enjoyed being in this world and loved this opportunity to explore other parts of the witch and familiar world. This started off as a great story and I loved Rafael and Enoch but where things went off the rails was at the end. There just weren't enough pages to do this story justice and so the ending was super rushed. There was no real angst or time to fully connect and believe that these two characters fell in love. If this had been a full length book than I think it may have been my favorite of the series as there was so much potential too it. Am sad that it didn't have a chance to live up to its full promise even as its a good installment to the series.
4.5 stars only because it needed to be longer. I really enjoyed the whole wild west theme we had going on in this one. Enoch & Rafael were perfect for each other.
I love Hexworld series. I think the idea of witches and familiars is really interesting.
Here we meet Rafael and Enoch. To be honest, I would have loved POV from Rafael, but still, it was good. Enoch is hunting his own familiar only he doesn't know that. But as is customary in life, priorities change and life happens.
It was a fun, short story. I would have loved to know more about what happened with Rafael's family.
Well, it would appear that we moved on to Enoch's story. This was a short but entertaining read that took a twist or two that I didn't see coming. As is true with most "short stories" it could have been longer and given us a more in-depth look at Enoch and Raphel... but, it is what it is! ;p
Rafael wound strong fingers in Enoch’s coat, tugging him closer. “It wasn’t like this.” “And what is this?” “Loco,” Rafael said, and kissed him.
So... It's a cop and criminal story. Enoch being the lawman that's after the bandit, Rafael. They come to face to face and it turns out, Enoch is Rafael's Witch. Circumstances change... Things happen and they strike a deal to capture a gang together.
All good! I liked the action part of the book and even that twist in there, I didn't see that coming.
Rafael and Enoch actually have great chemistry and I wanted them to be togethet, the problem was, for me, that the romance was thrown together. That teasing, flirty banter these two guys have that are in two different sides of the law was fun! But it needed longer to grow, to just happen and develop into more. The story was going along but I guess, the romance had to come in somewhere but for me it came at the wrong time. A time where Enoch should've been angry and doubtful etc, but he was the opposite. Then that ending, was sweet and cute but I feel like it was thrown in there like "here ya go. Here's the romance. You're welcome. The end."
it felt out of place for me, the guys and their romance needed longer. Plus the guys had so much depth to them and so many things that could have been explored much more. It's a pity it didn't expand on the things that were there.
Short Story; Wild Wild Hex Series: HexWorld Short Author: Jordan Hawk Publisher: Amazon Digital Genre: Paranormal Historical Rated: Mature M/M Release Date : Oct 26, 2017 Pages: 60
Our Ms Jordan has decided to play with her fans, and taken us on a trip into the Wild West. The time of bank robbers, steam engines, and rock ‘em , sock ‘em cowboys. You realize we thrive on her number one genre love; Historical. Between the Wyborne and Griffin Novels and Hexworld she allows us to be taught about our own world at the turn of the century.
This short is oh to short story, but we get a glimmer of Jordan having some word fun with us! ….Hexas Rangers anyone?
The story line was easy to follow, the steal from the bad and give to the poor left us with endearing thoughts the moment we met Rafael, aka The Gentleman Robber. Enoch was also easy on the eyes.
Cant say enough about this young woman, just admire her writing and always looking for more…..
It was a fun, action packed short story. Throwing us into the wild west was a nice mix. The action was intense and the love making passionate. Jordan L. Hawk does tell a compling story in a short time. I think if she could have incorporated the author from A Christmas Hex into the shelfs that would have been a nice nod to the audience. But like all of her books she weaves a wonderful and full story filled with great scenes and characters. I recommend this book to (as I always do) to any fans of her series, books, characters, and to those who like male/ male romance with action and adventure.
Just as with all the stories in the series, I loved it. However, I would have definitely liked to see more interaction between the two MCs other than all the action. Hopefully we can see the two of them together again in another book in the series.
