Jen Frederick delivers the third installment of this series gifting Knox Masters, hero of the first book, twin brother’s story. Even though there are a lot of similarities between Ty and Knox, being identical, both heading for the NFL, for me and Ara Martin that is where the similarities stop. I really liked Ty and if both brothers were standing in front of me it’s a no brainer that I could and would choose Ty.

description

Ara Martin is definitely my favorite heroine of the series. I loved her little pep talks to herself and her sense of humor. I would have loved to room with her and Fleur. Ara is Ty’s best friend and that is something she WILL NOT I repeat WILL NOT mess with because friendships lasts.

We’re friends. Really good friends and that will last longer than any relationship…”

description

This is a love story and a bit on the ansty side to boot. Ty has strong feelings for Ara and vise versa. These two make a great couple and have terrific chemistry.

description

I’m sure hoping that this is not the end of this series as I really enjoy the characters and those that aren’t officially matched up like a Fleur book would be fun with one of the guys. Overall this was an enjoyable read with a great couple who were equally likable and perfect for one another!

Re-read 9/4/18

I'm a huge fan of Jen Frederick and especially of this series. I've been waiting for Ty's story for what seems like forever and I am not afraid to admit I squealed a little when I found his book on my Kindle. He's wasn't a huge presence in the series but he still instantly grabbed my attention and I knew his book was going to be brilliant.

Played is a friends-to-lovers tale of Ty and his BFF Ara. They've been close since the start of school but now that they're both about to start their lives out of school, Ara looking for a job in the art world and Ty getting drafted into the NFL, they have to face those feelings that have been building under the surface.

What I really liked about Ty and Ara's relationship is that they stayed close no matter what. Even when their feelings were starting to be revealed to each other they were still very close and didn't give up on their friendship. Ara fought against it the most but Ty was right there to make her see that they did belong together and I loved him for that.

This book seemed to have a lot less off that college-angst that the previous books did but I actually really liked that it was the sweetest of the whole series. I think it still complemented the other books really well and getting to see more of Knox has me wanting to go back and re-read his book, so I think I just found my plans for the night.

✮✮✮ 3 STARS ✮✮✮

I love Jen Frederick. Her books usually never fail to make me laugh and put a stupid grin on my face. Downed released almost a year ago so I was more than ready to get another Gridiron story. I also love the friends-to-lovers trope but unfortunately Played missed the mark this time for me. Let me explain:

I get that if you have a wonderful friendship you care about you do everything to protect it. I understand the fear of jeopardizing it by admitting to deeper feelings but there comes a point when a heroine should stop running away and acting like a chicken, grow some balls and just stop being so frustratingly immature.

Ara is the daughter of a famous sculptor and close to the final exams for her art major. She works at a gallery with a jerk of a colleague who walks over her and she doesn't do so much as blink about that. Ara wants to be successful in a branch that doesn't have a lot of jobs on the market to begin with and she wants to succeed without her father's help. It was woefully frustrating to see her harping on about wanting a spot in the sunlight but not using her resources available to get there. And that attitude leaked into every part in her life.

When she met Ty four years ago, she fell hard for him but seeing all of her father's marriages ending in tears she is convinced that a friendship rather than a relationship would keep Ty in her life. And here is the second thing that made me grind my teeth. Ara is a coward. Note: it's not becoming to be a coward. It makes a person look insecure and we know how attractive that is. And the part where she shoves him into the arms of another woman and then harping on about it in her inner monologues was ridiculous.

Ty gave me a bit whiplash and while he was an indifferent jerk with all his former girlfriends he was mostly sweet with Ara.

I've always loved Ara the person. She's the first one I think of when I wake up and the last one I contact before I go to sleep. She never falls lower than two on my text list.

He loves her and their friendship is one aspect that was wonderfully portrayed and I adored about this story. They just trust in one another, knowing the other one would be there if things went downhill. But he's also a bit clueless and contradicts himself.

If she made even the first sign that she wanted me, I'd be over there in a heartbeat. But she's turned me down cold. I can get the hint. Her friendship is too precious for me to fuck it up with sex. I can get that anywhere. I won't find someone as loyal, kind, funny as Ara. Or as hot, my dick reminds me.

So he wants her and would totally act on it and he doesn't because she turned him own? And then he values her friendship too much? What is it now? You see, he confused me a little bit.

At least he got his head on straight fast and went after what he wanted most.
There was also the a little drama on social media with Ty's ex-girlfriend and how that would influence the NFL draft was a bit unrealistic and OTT - why would the NFL care about ex-girlfriend drama of a future prospect professional football player? What they expect from their players is that they are 100% focused on the job - and Ty was all in and committed to his career.

This story doesn't sound like the ones I'm used to from Jen Frederick. It lacked the witty dialogues, the engaging story line and most of the time I felt a bit detached - I never really connected with the characters or their romance but I did love their friendship and maybe that's what they should have stayed - friends.
With all that being said, I still enjoyed parts of the book and I hope that the next one will be a winner again. As always the reminder that you check out other reviews, I might be totally in the minority and you might end up loving it!

Title: Played
Series: Gridiron #4
Author: Jen Frederick
Release date: October 6, 2017
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

Played is the fourth installment of the Gridiron series, bringing us Ty Masters' story, who is Knox's identical twin. Knox is the hero from Sacked, book one, which is quite possibly my favorite of the entire series so far. The Gridiron books have been new adult perfection for me, and the standard for what I look for in the genre. Jen Frederick knows how to deliver the goods that I'm expecting: flirty, witty banter, a delicious amount of angst and steam, and a group of secondary characters who shine equally as much. The notable character development is what really makes these stand apart in an oversaturated genre.

Regretfully, for the first time, I just wasn't feeling that same love for Ty's story. I wish I could say I felt that same excitement, but there was something missing here for me. Or several somethings. This is what I would call your typical friends to lovers trope.

I knew when I first met him during freshman orientation that I had two choices. I could date him for a short time and be forgotten. Or I could be his friend. I chose the latter, and four years and countless girlfriends later, Ty and I are best friends.

As you would expect, one of the main conflicts was Ara's fear of ruining their friendship if their romance didn't work out. In addition to this, adding to her hesitancy was the poor relationship record of her father. His inability to maintain a long term relationship because his art career was his first priority taught her a damaging lesson. It was easy to draw a comparison to Ty and her father. Ty, who loves football so much that he couldn't invest any time or interest in making a relationship work throughout college. In her eyes, it was better to push down her deeper feelings, never hinting that her best friend made her desire so much more.

Here's my problem with Ara. She is quite the frustrating people pleaser. And when you're this type of person, you inevitably let others walk all over you. And no, I don't expect a character to be perfect from beginning to end, I like to see character growth. It makes them feel much more realistic. However, in her case, she was her own worst enemy on so many different occasions that I really wanted to knock some sense into her. Trying to make her mother happy and seeking validation, who did nothing but insult her, and disparage her choices. Choosing to endure the abuse of her co-worker to appease his anger over how she got hired. Not just suggesting, but pushing Ty into the arms of a seemingly unhealthy relationship with another girl just to deflect him away from her own feelings. I'll be honest, it got to be a bit much. She was incapable of standing tall and living her truth in her life.

Ara had a lack of maturity for her age, that I couldn't get on board with. Her method of dealing with a problem that arose in her life was to pretend it wasn't there, or to run like the wind. After her first hook up with Ty, she pretended as if it never happened rather than addressing it and clearing it up with him. The second time, she avoided him like a scared child when he tried to have an adult discussion with her over their relationship. I wasn't a fan of how she treated him, especially after the second time. She left him hanging, feeling confused, angry, and hurt. All during a time when he needed her to be there for him.

Ty had his fair share of personal conflicts that dogged him leading to his imminent entry into the draft. A vindictive ex-girlfriend who smeared his character on social media, an agent with questionable morals and methods of doing business, and the supposed weak spot to his image because he didn't have a girlfriend. First of all, his chosen agent was a complete scumbag, and he was so bad, I lost a measure of respect for Ty for not dropping him before he was forced to do so.

And why do you ask, does he STAY with this piece of filth? His pride and stubbornness. His family and friends are telling him left and right that he needs to send him packing, but no. He lets this man manage his career simply because he doesn't want to hire his brother's agent. He wants to do things on his own. I'm sorry, how could you remotely be okay with someone with such glaring character flaws? And then he is somehow surprised when his choice blows up in his face later. Not sure how that is possible.

The whole "you need a girlfriend" thing and his image issues that plagued him were not really that believable to me, and the resolution was surprisingly anti-climatic I thought. Just one throwaway sentence towards the end that everything was smoothed over suddenly, after the drama that ensued throughout the book? It made me sit and go, "Hmm." When it came to Ara, he was very sweet, and I can't say that he was a bad guy overall. But as a couple...I wasn't feeling much excitement for them. There was a definite lack of angst during the period they worked through the barrier of their friendship. I almost felt ambivalent over how they would come together. I didn't see their desperation to be together, it was more lukewarm than anything. So, as a result, I didn't feel that.

Despite the disappointed tone of this review, I didn't hate this one, but unfortunately I didn't feel nearly what I was expecting based on my enjoyment of the series in the past. It was a very fast paced read, and I was never bored or overly angry. But the spark was missing for me personally. Maybe you won't feel the same, and this book sounds right up your alley. I urge you to pick up Played and give it a chance.

An example set, doesn’t have to be followed.

Turns out my 14-year-old son has already found his wife. Well, if we work it by Knox and Ty’s rules, the person who can tell the identical twins apart is their life partner. From the time he attended kindy, my son was always able to tell his little twin friends apart. Me, no chance in heck. Of course, I asked him how he was able to tell them apart? His response cracked me up, keep in mind he was only 4. *One of them smiles*. After a humorous chat with the girls’ mother, she laughingly told me he was right. One of the twins is an outgoing chatterbox and the other is shy and a little reserved. So, my son has already been allocated his wife…the problem is, I’m not sure which one. 😉

I really enjoyed Played. There are only a few NA series that I can read and this is one of my favourites. I think the reason why I navigate towards College NA over others is that most of the characters take their studies seriously and have goals. Sure, they can be reckless and immature, but they seem to be more good than bad. In this case, both our main characters are Seniors and steps away from graduating and having to make decisions about their futures. Both Ara and Ty are facing challenges and struggles. Sometimes it takes an accident to steer you in the right direction.

We all have examples set for us by important people in our lives. Whether we choose to follow by example, pick apart and use the best of the example or completely disregard the example, is a choice we have to make. Ara has her father as a bad example of relationships. Ty has his brother as an example of successfully being drafted in the NFL (I hope I got that right???).

This is a friend to lovers story and I loved that these two had the foundations already set to grow from. They were a little stubborn and made me want to bop them on the head, but I understood where their hesitations stemmed from. I admit to getting a little impatient with Ara and thought she was a goose for running. She admits to her mistakes and learns from them, so I forgave her.

I thoroughly enjoyed Played and I hope that there will be more of this series in the future.

3.5 Quit Being Scared Stars
* * *1/2 Spoiler Free
This is a study in loving someone who is focused on a career and could possibly make you feel second place. Because Ara Martin's father did that with her mother... Being friends with the one she loves, College Football Star Ty Masters, seems smarter than trying to share his life as a girlfriend.

Jen Frederick puts us knee deep in the senior year of these two. Ty is working with everything he has to make the top draft pick in the NFL. His twin brother was drafted in 3rd place and he needs to show everyone as well as himself he has the goods.

Ara has loved her father from the start... he is a world class artist and is known for his emotional renderings. He has a lousy record when it comes to women... they end up being second place to his need to create...It colored everything Ari experienced as a child...She saw the bitterness her mother still holds onto to this day.

Ara is trying to make a name for herself in the art world without any reference to her father and Ty is destined to do the same in football. Both are hiding behind the friendship they have... and it is the one hurdle they both need to overcome.

This book sits clearly in New Age... both characters are 22 and 23... getting ready to go out and finally become who they think they want to be. The only question is will they do it as the couple they should be ... or continue to hide behind the Friendship Slot.

This had humor, the continuing crossover from past characters from previous books and when these two finally own up to what they had going for them and quit being scared... then there are Young, Hot Times.

Think Ty is the best Masters Twin!!

I really enjoyed this book and the whole series so far. I 've been looking forward to Ty's books. Since his twin brothers book where we got to see him. Ty is a lot different then his twin brother Knox. Ty even though he's a lil older seems like the younger brother in somes way. He feels like he is in Knox's shadow when really he isnt. He has put he career in the NFL on hold by a year cause of Knox but he never says anything. He just wants to be himself and get where he wants to be by being Ty Masters not the twin brother of Knox. Things don't go quite his way he a trying to life a clean life before the draft pick but drama seems to follow him. Which doesn't make thinks easy for him just thank god he has his best friend Ara to keep him from losing it.

Ara as been Ty's best friend for 4 year. They get on so so well they tell each other everything and are alway there for each other. She knows him better than anyone even his twin brother at times. There relationship asnt gone anywhere until one nite of where things got a lil steamy between the pair. But Ara thought it was better to just not talk about it and not put a stress on there friendship it was to important to them. Ara had seen how friendships can go when there taken to another level and she didn't want to have that happen to get and Ty he meant the world to. She didn't care if her body want her sexy best friend she needed to find a way to calm it down even it if was getting harder and harder the more she saw him.

I luvd these two together. They were so good for each other even though at times I wanted to smack there heads together. They are both so stubborn they both couldn't see what a good thing they had. They both out themselves in stupid position they didn't have to. The sexual chemistry between them was so hot. They just would take that leap to the next level. Everyone around them could see how good they were it was just that needed to wake up. I really liked the story and it was great to get a bit more of Knox I did miss Ellie I luv them together. But I do like Ty and Knox's twin thing it was so funny how things would work between them. But I also liked how Ara knew then apart it showed how much she knew her best friend. I would highly recommend this book. It's the first series I 've read from this author but it won't be the last. I couldn't put this book down once I started it had me hooked. I m really hoping that she does more with series I m still hoping she does Jack Ellie's brothers book. I 've wanted that from the first book to. It's hard to not want more of these sexy footballer I 've fallen for them all.

Played by Jen Frederick was the fourth book in the Gridiron series.

We originally met Tyler “Ty” Masters in book one, Sacked, as Knox’s twin brother. I loved Tyler from the start and even more with each encounter throughout the series. He gorgeous, funny, dedicated and loyal. He’s also a star football player and waited a year to enter the draft so he could win a college national football championship. He’s been best friends with Ava Martin for the past four years. He’s always been attracted to her but neither would admit it and they wanted to keep their friendship strong. They are both now graduating and things are beginning to heat up.

Played was written with a dual POV. It was well written and well developed. There wasn’t a ton of complexity and dimension, but there was a nice NFL Draft storyline running simultaneously along their relationship development. I also thoroughly enjoyed Ty’s interactions with his twin. It was humorous as well as heartfelt.

All in all, it was a fairly quick read and was enjoyable. Fredrick continued to introduce additional teammates, which will continue the series. Wyatt is up next in Delay of Game.

Spoilers ahead

This was such a disappointment

*Friends to lovers, both with OP during the four years
*They hookup one night but h doesn't say anything and H was so drunk he forgot
*He had a girlfriend who he thankfully did not have sex with, they were broken up before his almost sex with the h but got back together after. No sex with H and his ex girlfriend
*This book was slow as hell with lots of trouble for Ty with football, I found it unfair because none of the other guys had football trouble darn it! He ended up as number 1 draft pick so that soothed some of the hurt
*When they finally got together the transition felt awkward
*The h fought it down to the last which I hate
*He's a heck of a dirty talker so at least I had that
*Twin test, which she passed because she always could 🤦
*Four years wasted because of a lack of communication and her fears
*Eh I wasn't a fan
*I like that the H's are jealous, possessive and loyal in this series
*I'm not ending in a high note but I enjoyed this author's writing so I'm trying more from her

I really needed a book with friends to lover's trope + a sport romance book to work after the last two I read failed. When I heard Jen's new book was about Ty Masters, I needed this book like my next breath. Ever since Knox's twin brother made an appearance in Sacked I knew I needed his book. How could you resist a twin brother?

Played is IMO really different than the first three books in the Gridiron series. Where the others were sweet, sexy and all football, here you have full angst.
I read the book in less than 24 hours because I had to have answers and believe they are lots of them when you start reading.

Ty is a great guy who's solely focused on football and being the best. While his brother is already in the game, he knows he wants to top it. Challenge much?

Ara put him in the best friend box because friends stay longer in each other life. Even if it becomes more and more difficult to hide her real feelings she doesn't want to jeopardize what she has. The fact her father has never committed in his life is probably the reason she can see past it.

Ty & Ara's friendship was solid and I think no girl could ever compete with it. Jen Frederick put the time and effort to describe what they share. This kind of friendship is rare and unique so it was understandable that Ara didn't want to risk more. They are fun together and it shows. The bond they have was the magical part of the book. I loved every minute when they were together.

The side-characters are all great! I'm so curious about Remy & Nicole, the dynamic between these two was quite hilarious and I wouldn't mind knowing more about them.

If you had the cherry on the cake with Knox's presence in some part of the book made me want to re-read Sacked soon.

Picking Played should be a no brainer especially if you've read the other books in the series, so no need to wait any longer.

~ I voluntary read a copy of this book provided by the author ~

Played is the fourth installment in Gridiron series and it's a story revolving around Knox Masters' twin Ty .

It's a story of growth in every possible segment that would define and mold a young person at the crissroads of their lives-taking responsibilities, considering and weighting decisions about the future, while they are, simultaneously, trying to find themselves and the love over the firm friendship.

In that segment "friends to lovers" trope was a perfect way to present these two characters while they push and pull towards each other, trying to cope with insecurities, fear of breaking the friendship code while pursuing the love cause it might destroy what they already have...but instead...they find the deeper emotions fortifying what had already existed.
I don't know if it's destiny that made him run into me that first day of school. I don't know if it's fate that has brought us together. It doesn't matter, though. What matters is that we put our vulnerable hearts on the line, and we have been fully rewarded.

I liked this story but i didnt love it, at least not like I loved the previous three books in the series. It was angst free, sweet NA sport drama with a romantic HEA but somehow it left me feeling 'meh' inspite the steamy, hawt and funny parts intervowen in the story.

5 Ty and Ara Stars

I really enjoyed this book, in fact, I think this is my favourite one of the series. Ty is the identical twin brother of Knox Master's (first book) but he is a very different character. Ara is his best friend and these two have been friend zoning each other for four years. But College Graduation is looming. Ty is heading for the NFL and Ara is facing the prospect of losing the man she has loved for four years. Is she willing to risk losing her best friend if he finds out her true feelings? Or maybe she isn't the only one feeling more than friendship.

Great story with interesting characters that were really likeable. I do love a sports romance and this was mixed in with the friends to lovers trope so it was ticking lots of boxes for me.

HEA? Yes-more HFN but I felt theirs was a forever love.
Cheating? No

I Loved Ty so much!!! The reason for the 1/2 star deduction... Ara.... she was fine. I liked her quirkiness and I could feel the connection between her and Ty, but she was just SUCH A P**SY!!!
I get that you don't want to lose your best friend and your dad has had all these failed relationships which show you that Love doesn't last. I mean all that fear was understandable to a certain point. But, when you get to the point where you're going to lose your friend regardless then ...
SERIOUSLY GIRL!! GROW SOME BALLS!!
Aside from that though, I liked this one a lot. Ty was seriously a fantastic hunk of rippling muscle. Yum...

Ty and Ara are perfect best friends to lovers. The story is emotional as well as fun-to-read. Loved the bantering back and forth between them. And, of course, seeing Knox again & the incorporation of the "twin test." It's Ty's turn to face the NFL draft -- will he outshine his twin brother? You'll have to read his story to find out for yourself. If you are into sports-related romance -- and football especially -- this is a slow burn to the hot stuff, but worth it!

Its not the fact that they did it because it's not bad decision but what bugs me is the fact that both Ty and Ara talk about not doing one thing throughout entire book to do exactly that at the end. But I loved everything else :***

5 STARS!

☾Oh boy. Okay, so I totally forgot this was coming out so soon! It's been on my TBR forever and it was finally released but I hadn't seen anything online about it! When I saw it was out, I downloaded it SO fast and began my commute into school. I did not want to stop! Ty is that adorable type of guy, I feel like the author wanted to portray him as a bad boy type, but nope. He's adorable and was just lost about his life - mostly girls if we're being honest here.

☾I love how Ty had feelings for Ara from the beginning, it was very evident in the writing that he felt something. Outwardly you wouldn't be able to tell because he's very casual, but his thoughts and actions towards Ara are so different to how he treats everyone else. It's like...open your eyes girl!

☾Ara frustrated me because the entire time she's battling with her feelings for Ty and she makes it pretty obvious to me! I felt like both her and Ty were very obtuse at times when it came to their feelings for one another (literally oblivious to each other). Then again, they were both thinking the other thought of them as just friends. Who knows. As a reader, it felt like the characters were clueless and naïve. When you read it you'll know what I'm referring to!

☾I did love this story though, I finished it in two sittings within one day. Yup, THAT good. It's your typical football story, if you're in the mood for sports and/or a best friends story, I guarantee you will love this. I I'm honest it's my ideal sports book, it has everything. OH and there's multiple appearances from a certain twin ;)

4 Friends to Lovers CROWNS

I have been dying for Ty's story since book one in the Gridiron series, featuring his twin brother, Knox. I was so enamored with his character and story that I absolutely NEEDED Ty's happy ending, and Jen Frederick didn't disappoint with this friends to lovers romance.

Ty! How I longed to get to know this more serious, yet just as devishly handsome man. Everything from his dedication to football to his aloofness with his girlfriends to his obvious affection for his best friend earns reader adoration. I particularly love the way in which he goes after Ara once he finally realizes his feelings for her. I think this is ultimately why I love sports romance heroes. They usually transfer their dedication on the field to their pursuit of their women, and Ty does it with gusto.

Ara is a more difficult heroine for me. Most of her unhappiness stems from her own choices, which are driven by her fears, fear of losing her friend, fear of being left behind, fear of not being enough, and fear of never making it on her own. While her choices are frustrating at times, her fears are real and believable, and I would imagine many readers will be able to relate to them, therefore, making her a more sympathetic character.

The pacing of Played is absolutely perfect. Jen Frederick gives readers time to get to know these two as friends. We see the platonic love on the surface, but we also get to see, with the use of a dual point of view, how they both pine for each other. The frustrating aspect of the story is that we know how the other feels, and we, obviously want them to act, but both are hesitant for different reasons. What readers are going to love is when Ty and Ara finally get it together and let down their guards. Jen Frederick doesn't make this instantaneous but a gradual process, which completely fits with the fears that have weighed down the heroine from the beginning. When these two come together, though, it is explosive. Their intimate moments in the bedroom and other areas are HOT, and these times are worth the wait we endure. I also absolutely love the ending, not only because they find the right balance with each other but also because of the little nod to the ending of Sacked.

This series is one of my favorite sports romances because not only it is filled with lovable and three dimensional characters with angsty stories but also because it introduced me to the world of Jen Frederick. It is one of those series I never want to end, and I hope we get many more books for the different players we meet in each book. It is one of those series that I would be okay with going on forever. It is definitely one of those series you should pick up today.

Yesssss! This was just what I needed!! I'd been struggling for days with connecting with the last few books I'd picked up but Played pulled me right in from the start and held me captive until the very end. I love a good sports romance and I love the way Jen Frederick writes them. She speaks as much to the romance reader in me as she does to my inner football fan, never simply slapping a helmet on a hot character and calling it a sports romance, but by really getting down into the trenches with an athlete and beautifully crafting their story as they navigate their sport, their career path, and their love life.

Something about Ty just stole my heart. I loved everything about this guy, especially the way he treated his best friend. This friends to lovers romance was just everything. I love a slow burn, I love angst, I love a steamy, sexy, deliciously sweet love story and Played was all the things. The pace in this story was perfection. It was exquisitely crafted, pulling every emotion from me as I read... LUST, JEALOUSY, HEARTACHE, FURY, LOVE... I felt it all.

I love a good sports romance but more, I LOVE a good friends to lovers romance. Played is the full package, layering both in this unputdownable story that I devoured. Two best friends struggling with the feelings they've secretly developed for each other while also struggling with their own identities. Ty and Ara are each fighting their own battle to carve a place for themselves in a world overshadowed by the success of someone they love. It's beautiful and relatable and emotional the whole way through. I was as invested with these characters' personal journeys as I was with the attraction simmering between them. I love a sweet and sexy sports romance and Played is certainly that. But I so appreciate a deeper plot, a richly layered storyline that completely ensnares the reader in its romanticism, its drama and its well developed character dynamics. And Played is certainly all of that as well. I loved it!

3.5 to 4 stars
I have been anxiously awaiting Ty's story since the first book Sacked about his identical twin Knox. Ty wanted to develop his own identity away from his brother so he went to a different college and he is about to enter the NFL draft a year after his twin did since he stayed at school in order to help win a championship.

His best friend since Freshman year is Ara Martin. She is a funny, loyal, and kind woman who wants to work in the art world but does not want to ride the coat tails of her famous artist father. She is smart enough to realize early on that Ty makes a good friend, but not a good boyfriend. Football is his passion and the upcoming combine is his priority. He is sweet, supportive, protective, and makes time for her., but other women just cannot compete.

It has all worked well with them being best buddies for years, but there was this one night, a little alcohol, and some touching that neither is talking about...but they are thinking about. And it might just change everything. Secret crushes, jealousy, difficulty dealing with feelings, and a whole lot of insecurity and fear start to interfere with their easy going rapport. And there is sexual tension that keeps building. And eventually they are going to explore more, but that comes with even more pressure and fears.

I liked Ara in the beginning, but she really started getting on my nerves. She was an avoider, runner, and was great at self sabotage. Ty started out a bit clueless, but once I saw how he treated Ara and he made up his mind, I really liked him. But his life was spiraling. There were various external dramas going on around their future jobs, families, and exes. But some of their decisions and actions just made me scratch my head.

It honestly felt like this one had less of a plot and emotional baggage than the previous books. It was easier and fluffier, even though it was also more frustrating. It was told in dual points of view and I loved that characters from previous books made appearances. It could have been my mood. I was just a bit disappointed since I had been looking forward to Ty. I liked it, but just not as much as the others.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm super in love with this series. After Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series, this is one of my favorite NA sports romance series. It's got some swoony heroes, some awesome female leads, and romances that are realistic AND sexy. I've been anticipating Ty's book since the very beginning. I loved the glimpses we got of him in Sacked, and was desperate for his book. And it was everything that I wanted and so much more. It also had one of my favorite tropes, the friends to more romance, and I thought it was done really well here. I grew to really love Ty. Jen Frederick is good with character development, and she does such a fantastic job with Ty's character. I also liked Ara a lot, even though, I admit sometimes her unwillingness to go after what she wanted was a teensy bit frustrating. I appreciated that even though she was a famous artist's daughter, she wanted to pave her own way in the art scene. Their relationship is another thing I adored in Played. I loved the comfort level in their friendship, and I loved how devoted and sweet Ty was to her. There was also some very obvious attraction between the two, that are both unwilling to act on in the fear that it will ruin their relationship. Of course, before the end of the book, they can't resist but giving in, and I loved them even more as a couple than as friends. I think their friendship really solidified their bond, and made for a relationship with a great foundation. I also appreciated that the book was drama-free for the most part. Jen Frederick doesn't rely on over the top twists to separate her couples, which I really really love. I also loved seeing Knox again. He and Ty may be identical twins, but they could not be any different from each other. But their sibling bond is so great, I loved every scene/conversation between them. Played was another hit in the Gridiron series for me, and if you haven't checked out this football romance series yet, you should.

I give this book 4 stars because I loved it and I love the series so much. But in my heart, I wanted this book to be better. Only because Ty is my favorite character in the series; the story I had for him in my head was what I wanted exactly, so I feel like the only way to get five stars is if Jen Frederick had actually been in my head. I enjoyed Ty’s story. Even more when Knox started demanding the twin test. A fun read.
