I will be recommending this book to all of my kids looking to be career musicians. I learned a lot of these practice techniques in college and this book articulates them well. I will be using excerpts in my classroom as well as implementing the practice plan.
Although it lacks some information for pianists (strategies to study several voices, etc), it is the best book I’ve read so far on practice for musicians.
A small book full of big advice, with a highly practical side and strong strategies. The author really made me rethink certain aspects of my practice that I thought I already understood, offering new information and fresh perspectives. It carries a vivid motivational core while also providing concrete guidance on building a solid method and persistence.
This is definitely a book I would recommend to ALL musicians.
8-5-2023 ... yikes! Put this aside in 2019, really liking it, and lost track of it. I know where to look, I'll have to find this and go back and finish it! 2nd book added to my new GoodReads "abandoned" category, to make it easier to find those books I mean to return to. Should that be 'abandoned' or 'interrupted'?
For decades I never learned HOW to practice. Band directors just said “practice scales”, which can be the ultimate boredom! I finally have a process for practicing scales (modified from Jamey Abersold) and this book expands my practice technique both for scales and for “real music”. I love it! This makes music fun again.
Great, short book of practice tips for primarily begging for to collegiate level musicians. Many apply to professionals as well, though you may only encounter a few new tips. A quick read and good reference
Succinct, easy to read, practical advice for musicians and singers. Worthwhile information, tips and advice packaged together in one helpful resource. Have I heard some of it before? Yes. Was it worth hearing again.Absolutely!
