Teaches a key mathematical theme for Early Years Numeracy through both imaginative and entertaining text and pictures. Not a typical Maths book - engaging for children up to 5 years. Ideal for teachers and parents to read with children. The book features four variations on the mathematical theme of sequence, which together introduce young readers to the first ten ordinal numbers, the first five cardinal numbers and the seven days of the week. Imaginative and with funny texts, this brilliantly illustrated book will educate young children without them even realising it. From the Great Penguin Race, a week of Animal Antics, to the tragedy of Little Lucy Ladybird, and finally, the ingenuity of an original action finger rhyme, children will be both enthralled and informed by these well told stories.
Since qualifying as a Religious Studies teacher in 1989, Nigel Tetley has worked in a variety of schools, spanning middle and secondary age groups in both the State and independent sectors. At the beginning of his teaching career, he also spent a year in Greece teaching English. In 2001, he started writing children's poetry at the suggestion of a colleague. Full details of all of his writing projects can be found on his website.
This fun rhyming book is the perfect introduction to the first ten ordinal numbers, the first five cardinal numbers and the seven days of the week.
With expressive, action-packed illustrations full of imagination and wit this book will highlight math concepts hidden within the storylines. Kids will get subliminal math lessons without even knowing what is happening. That certainly is a good thing.
The book has three distinct stories plus an original rhyme that cries out for interaction.
The Great Penquin Race stars ten athletic penguins that are all pumped to win but things go awry when they jump the gun and tear off after hearing a man cough. Oh my!!! The scrambling, skidding, rolling, digging, overheating and collapsing that happens will make kids giggle out loud I'm sure. The moral? Heads down, eyes on the prize, and run the race straight. If you don't deviate you will end up winning.
Animal Antics will delight wee ones. It depicts seven different critters doing seven utterly absurd things on each day of the week.
My favourite?
"On Friday, Clever Kitty Cuckoo Trapped a rainbow in an igloo!"
I remember saying outloud with a pout on my face when I read it... ooohhh (groan)... I'd like to trap a rainbow in my house, how fun would that be?
The animal's antics will tickle a child's funny bone and bring a smile to his face each time it is read.
Little Lucy Ladybird is a tale about a sweet ladybird whose spots get blown about by winds so strong they blow right off of her. The first one lands in the middle of a pond, the second does a graceful moon landing, and my favourite landing place? Nowhere!!! That's because the spot never, ever docks. It's an-infinity-and-beyond spot that probably is still orbiting our earth even now so keep a watchful eye out for it and you just may see it soaring by.
The rhyme is an original action finger rhyme that is perfect to memorize and interact with.
The fun visuals and the playful language makes this book another winner from the talented author and illustrator. I highly recommend this book.
I've now read several books by Nigel Tetley who makes use of humour, rhyme and the animal kingdom to teach valuable lessons without sounding preachy. Instead, I've found all of Tetley's books fun and creative, including Order! Order!
In this chapter book, the author tackles numerical sequence, such as first, second, third, with the help of ten penguins in a race. In the second chapter, we learn the days of the week through the funny antics of animals with names such as Greedy Gertie Goat or Silly Sally Snake. In the third chapter, it's back to numerical sequence with rhyming storytelling, and finally, we have a cute rhyme about handy fingers. I love the play on words.
Order! Order! is an intelligent book that is for young children, yet uses a vast vocabulary of words. It's educational, fun, creative and includes pastel-colored illustrations that are simple and age-appropriate. This book is ideal in the classroom setting or the home library.
This is such a lovely and valuable book for children! There are three different little stories to support introducing cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers and the days of the week on children's learning. It's very easy to understand, and it might be suitable for children who don't speak English as a first language because sentences are short and precise. It's an excellent book to have in a class of 3-5 years old children. I kept it in my class's library for a couple of weeks after reading with them the first time, and kids still like to look at it and ask my colleagues or me to read it with them!
This is the first Nigel Tetley book that Tiger and I have ever read, and let me tell you one thing: this book is perfect for kids who love numbers and animals!
Through funny rhymes and amazing illustrations, Order! Order! makes mathematical concepts easier and interactive. We particularly love The Great Penguin Race, as advocates of wildlife preservation, highlighting animals in educational books is always a treat for Tiger and Tim.
This a rare find! I got this for my three-year-old son, and he loves it. I am a big fan of books that teach young children math through stories. This book exceeds my expectation. The story rhyme beautifully, with great messages, and also teaches my son some crucial math concept in an intuitive way. Highly recommend.
Order, Order is a fantastic book filled with fun rhymes and memorable verse! The imaginative stories are well-written and well-illustrated, and it is easy to see how they can be invaluable teaching tools.
My 6 year old daughter, Rory, says, “I like this book 📖🏳️🌈🇺🇸🔔🔊❕💓💗💗💝💞❣️💕💜❤️🔮🍬🧁🍰🎂🍰🍭🍩🍫 because there is a penguin who fell in the dirt which that was a huge puddle. It’s very funny that the snake put pepper on a cake. That’s the end.” (She likes doing the word art.)
There are four short rhymes with fun illustrations. One for ordinal counting to ten, one for ordinal counting to five, one for counting to five on one hand, and one for the days of the week. This is an easy favorite.
What a fun way for kids to learn math concepts! This is an enjoyable way to introduce or reinforce the math concepts of counting and ordinal numbers. The book includes a number of fun counting stores with cute pictures. I would recommend this book for ages 3-5. This is my honest review of the book. I received a copy of the book from the author for free."
It is never early to start reading poems to your little ones.
Exposure to rhymes helps children detect little details that make up words. Apart from the fun of reading, these little details are the building blocks of developed reading and writing skills.
ORDER! ORDER! by Nigel Tetley is very simple, really. This is the beauty of it, as little ones love simple, funny, and easy-to-understand rhymes. And the author is definitely a master of rhyme with his punchy verses, well-chosen ideas, and gentle sense of humour.
All children, as we know, love to play. Nigel’s book - containing only three funny and well-illustrated poems - is nothing but a beautiful wordplay. I am sure your child will have a lot of fun with the carefully crafted and irresistible rhymes of ORDER! ORDER!
The rhyming style is pretty unique and at the same time reminds me a bit of the British humor. Sometimes more evident but often very subtle. It's a kind of book that would be interesting for a child but not boring at all for the parent as well. At the same time I believe children and adults can see different things in these words.
I think this is my 5th book from this author and I absolutely love how exact the illustrator is capturing the idea of the book and how clearly are shown the emotions. And this is not only for this book but for all the others as well.
This book offers a delightful approach to teaching math to children. It presents an enjoyable and effective method for introducing or reinforcing counting and ordinal numbers concepts. The book features numerous fun and engaging stories with adorable illustrations. I highly recommend this book for children aged 3-5 who are looking for a fun way to learn math. I received a copy of the book from the author.
Perfectly good collection of 3 stories and a short one-page rhyme.
Stories include:
Great Penguin Race (teaches ordinal numbers), Animal Antics (days of the week) Little Lucy Ladybird (ordinal numbers) and action finger rhyme (numbers 1-5).
The stories are fun, especially the story about Lucy, a ladybird who loses her spots and one lands on the moon. A goat eating a coat from Animal Antics will most likely cause giggles too.
What a adorable book! So much more than a counting book. Each page is silly, hilarious, giggle- inducing... The rhyming and cadence of the text is easy to read, and I'm sure many many kids will memorize the text from reading them so often. I can see kids reciting these poems in school, like modern day nursery rhymes, as part of a game or something.
I loved it, I'm sure my kids will love it, and we all look forward to reading more from this author!
I was initially drawn to this book because of the fun cover! I love quirky animal illustrations.
This book is a great tool for teaching numbers, alliteration and rhyme. The cadence is off in some places, but the learning material is there. This book would be appropriate for 3-7 year olds exploring early math and reading concepts.
What a brilliantly written book. Start off the read by counting and rhyming with racing penguins and then cool down at the end with some fancy finger work. This book is a fun and whimsical read for the little ones. I am pleased to have received this book as a gift from the author and cannot wait to share it with the little ones in my life!
"Order! Order!" by Nigel Tetley is a delightful book that creatively introduces math concepts to young readers. Through fun rhymes and engaging animal characters, it teaches numbers, counting, and days of the week. The charming illustrations add to the appeal. A fantastic choice for both learning and enjoyment.
I really like the rhyming approach to both the themes of counting and the days of the week. The days of the week section is particularly good. The book is great for introducing the names of numbers, but the reader is not actually counting anything. Perhaps the adult who's reading with the child can take the name of the number, then find something in the immediate environment to count?
This is a cute book for children learning to count. The fun rhyming text and adorable illustrations will engage children ages 3-7. The author is gifted in making teaching moments entertaining for kids.
So this book combines a few stories in one. Counting, Going through the days and more. The stories are random and you aren't quite sure what to expect next (as in a good thing). Random like a snake sprinkling pepper on their cake. Ha. Super cute though, and I'm sure kids would enjoy.
Another good rhyming and counting book that adds a little something different at the end. I really liked the fingers section. Very few children's books address proprioception (perception of body movement) which is an essential part of early childhood development. It's fun to red out loud.
Another beautifully illustrated book by Nigel Tetley, with easy to understand rhyming words. Simple counting concepts. Perfect as a teacher's resource.
This book is good for young kids starting to count! It also has great illustrations and rhyming! :) I received a copy of this book from the author for free*
Very good for early learning, entertaining and fun. I'd go as far as to say it should be included in the must-use section of materials in nurseries and kindergartens.
