Revenge is a dish best served cold. At least, that's what most people believed, but for Clancy Reynolds, that phrase could not be further from the truth. He is about to propose to the woman of his dreams, but she dumps him for another man before he has the chance. Blinded by rage, he decides to take matters in his own hands. The plan ends in tragedy, and Clancy is sent to a psychiatric hospital where his caretakers ask him to be part of a secret experiment. In exchange, he will have his freedom—if he survives.
Clancy tries to take a hold of his sanity as he descents into madness. Could he really go back like he was before, or will he succumb to his most twisted desires?
Author Miguel Estrada brings you another gripping story about torture, vengeance and transformation.
This was a decent story, although the dialog was a bit lacking overall. I liked the plot line, but wished it had been fleshed out more. Too much of the story was glanced over and felt shallow for me to get into it completely. I guess I liked the idea more than the execution here, but it was still enjoyable overall.

Fancy elegant Restaurant. Clancy Reynolds was at awe when Christina approached his table. He ordered a bottle of wine. Christina started to say they needed to talk. The waiter however brought the special plate entrée Clancy had ordered previously. Finally, she got a word in Clancy there's someone else. Clancy had had a rough child/teen lifestyle.
Miami, FL. Clancy started stalking Christina. Salsa Latina bar-restaurant. It was Richard Manning Christina’s co-worker. Screams could be heard from inside Richard’s house that was ablaze as Clancy dialed 911. Robert Johnson (lawyer) would not take Clancy’s case. He did suggest the Golden Psychiatric Hospital. Clancy was looking at either homicide, or manslaughter. Victor “Vic”, & Isaac escorted Clancy to his room. Dr. Jennifer Miller (Psychologist) greeted Clancy. Clancy had to attend groups. Violet (nymphomaniac), George “Georgie” (depression, suicidal ideation), & Clancy “C” explained why they were here. Later Clancy broke Victor’s nose & was shot with a stun gun. Georgie had ratted him out. Clancy met with Dr. William Hoffman (MD, behavioral psychiatry). The nurse wheeled him down to the glass enclosed room. Clancy had agreed to be their next guinea pig experiment. CR51 was administered intravenous. Dr. Ramirez was finalizing the test results. Will Clancy ever get out of Golden Psychiatric Hospital?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this (short story) book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, & great font/writing style. Wow, a very well written horror (Short story) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great horror movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Shifter by Miguel Estrada is a horror short story of revenge on a couple of levels. Clancy Reynolds and Christina were in love. They agreed on that. He had told her he loved her. She had replied with similar words. On the night they met in the restaurant when Clancy intended to seal the deal with a proposal of marriage, something had changed. They both had something important to say. For Clancy, it was “I love you.” For Christina, it was “I’m leaving you.” Not only was Christina leaving, but she was leaving Clancy for someone else.
Clancy was about to serve up revenge hot. First, there was the rage that burned inside him. Then there were the gas cans he was carrying to burn down the house of new boyfriend Richard Manning. Once everything he owned was destroyed, Christina might return to him. They weren’t supposed to be in the house when he burned it. They were and they died. Jail was the next logical place for Clancy.
Lawyer Robert Johnson said there was not much that could be done for Clancy. It was either a long time in jail or an indeterminate, but undoubtedly shorter term in a mental facility. Clancy unwisely picked the mental facility. All he had to do was convince the staff he was sane and after a couple of years, he would walk free. Clancy had not known and could not appreciate in advance the quality of staff he would encounter at the Golden Psychiatric Hospital, a private hospital with staff dedicated to research that was off the beaten path of acceptable medical research.
And that is where the horror begins. Doctors offered Clancy a chance to participate in cutting-edge research. One recovered, he would be offered early release from the facility. Clancy agreed.
Read the story to find out what happens next. I received this story from Prolific Works for free by signing up to the author’s mailing list. It is better than many short stories of this genre. I would give it four Amazon stars if I were rating it on Amazon. I don’t post reviews of free books on Amazon.
This is a short story that can be read in less than an hour, something to break the work routine.
Clancy Reynolds seems to be a normal, ordinary guy. But, when he is dumped by his girlfriend, he decides to take revenge on her new lover. When that goes horribly wrong, he is given the option to serve his time in an insane asylum.
Once there, he is approached by Dr. William Hoffman and given the option to undergo an experiment that will allow him to go free. Unfortunately, Clancy doesn't read the find print on the contract and things quickly descend into horror.
This was a short but oh so creepy horror tale, full of terror and lots and lots of gore. I would recommend anyone with a weak stomach to steer clear of this one. Some of the more graphic descriptions were pretty off-putting for even a diehard horror fan!
If you like dark, gruesome horror, give this one a try. The narrator does a phenomenal job and really made the atmosphere even more horrific. This one will stick with me for a long, long time. I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
Have you ever met someone who has the ethos of being totally reasonable, who even assures you of that themselves, only to find that they are more than a little nuts? This is the story of such a person. Yes this is a horror story, and there is a monster involved, but the author makes clear that there are also real monsters walking among us unseen. This novella was a great read.
Revenge is a dish best served cold. At least, that's what most people believed, but for Clancy Reynolds, that phrase could not be further from the truth.
I read this book on my Kindle. This was my first time reading body horror. On the medical shows when I see what’s wrong with the patients on screen, it makes me squeamish but reading about it happening here didn’t really bother me. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book. It was psychological and I liked that. I find it really interesting when books are exploring the mind. After it ended, I wondered what was going to happen next.
“Shifter” is a short story of revenge. Revenge gone horribly wrong sends our protagonist Clancy to a psychiatric hospital. Here he is recruited for an experimental treatment supposedly concerning anger management. As with Clancy’s revenge, the treatment does not go as planned either. We follow along as once again; Clancy takes his revenge. Three.point.five for a nice ending twist. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Shifter is my second book from Miguel Estrada, I received the ebook after reading author’s Madhouse. Shifter is a horrific portrayal of what curiosity and science can do to a human in a drug trail! Author could’ve included more background about Clancy, I felt the story short on Clancy’s character development. Other than that, the story is developed well, gripping, gruesome and is very engaging till the end. The story ends with an wonderment of what could happen next. A fast read.
I liked the main plot but I don’t feel the storyline matched very well. I didn’t get the MCs emotions- he was a sociopath but remorseful?? The ending was kind of choppy and there were quite a few errors. I enjoyed the premise of the story as well as the detail of the settings- it had the perfect amount of gore.
This is a fast-paced, supernatural thrill ride! With a gripping plot, dark secrets, and intense action, this story keeps you hooked from the very first page. A great pick for fans of dark fantasy and thrillers!
This was such an imaginative tale. The psychiatric hospital really takes its toll on the main character. The unimaginable happens. This was truly terrifying.
