This is basically a straight continuation of the tower-climb, complete with more battles, reversals, and gains. All said, it's more of a middle scene in a grand adventure than a full novel.
Not that it isn't entertaining as all hell, because it is.

I can't believe we are still ascending!
I mean, come one! I know it is fun to read these fighting scenes, but the story needs to progress too!
And I still have no Idea about the fact that Kirito has lost his memories. This book also ended at the start of a fight. Why?!? I think Kawahara is writing in the style of a TV show like Game of Thrones or 24. Not even anime is like that. This and the fact that the story is progressing at a snail's pace are the reasons I don't like this book as much as the previous ones.
I mean, come one! I know it is fun to read these fighting scenes, but the story needs to progress too!

This volume did a better job of interspersing the explanations and exposition with more organic plot development compared to vol. 12's heavy info dump style. There's a few moments where the obvious tropes are directly commented on in a meta-fashion, giving the book a sense of self-awareness. It's still a "ramp-up" style book mostly, but that's expected with this arc being a longer one.
All of this is leading up to what is looking to be non-stop action in the next book (though I already know that since I've watched the adaption of all these books already, so I guess I'm cheating).

The best summary of this book that I can give is a massive eyeroll.
These books have always been best described using the word elementary. The main character is a Mary-Sue, much as it pains me to admit that I like him that way. The plots are simple, but enjoyable. I like the setting of full-dive technology, that's enough of pushing the envelope as far as I'm concerned. But the author isn't satisfied with that, he's got to have some new technology every couple of books, and then he works himself into a corner.
He spent pages and pages on how the copying of the fluctlights worked out, and then brushes aside reproduction with a throw away sentence. And now he has inserted rape and sexual desire suddenly. How exactly is an ai going to rape another ai? Or we can go with the nomenclature of copied soul. How is a copied digital soul going to rape another copied digital soul?
Well, they have virtual bodies. Okay, but why do they have virtual bodies? These souls were copied from newborns, who were in newborn bodies, it's just accepted that the soul would know how to develop into a fully sexual human virtual body over time. How would they know to do that? They're literally disembodied, and have no cognitive function other than what they received in the couple of hours since their birth. It's eliding a lot of theory to get to even growth, it's eliding a whole lot more to get to sexuality.
Worse than that though is the character doesn't have any reason to fall in this way. Eugeo has had other women practically throw themselves at him, and he's never batted an eye or gotten all flustered over it. He's somewhat of a coward, he lets Kirito take the lead, and then all of a sudden, just because Kirito gets sucked out of a window, Eugeo is willing to start taking risks and giving into a sense of curiosity? Surely there's a taboo against spying on a woman in her sleep and yet he is willing to do that without a second thought? It goes against his character. The only reason to have it happen is to have an epic showdown between two friends, and its incredibly forced.
Honestly, this book was so bad I don't really want to go on to the next one. But, I will. Because I borrowed them, and I'm curious enough that I want to know what is going to happen.
I am a little tired of the trope that 'my will can overcome anything'. That's getting a bit irritating, especially when you have a system control on Bercouli that he can will himself out in order to speak to his student one last time after a single tear from her landed on his face. Please. That would be like my computer turning itself back on after hearing me cry. Downright creepy.

Well, isn't this going along rather neatly? I like where the story is going, finally we're not getting that much of Kirito, Eugeo and Alice have been developing as characters, and let me say, what a leap they've gone through since the first book of Alicization.
***MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD***
I love how Eugeo has grown in confidence and in power. He was so shy at first, never attacking much safe for under Kirito's instructions, but now that we see him on his first battle alone against Bercouli Synthesis One, oh boy. He is so powerful, even if he doesn't realise it. He has learnt the art of the sword, but has also learnt how to control his weapon and unleash powers beyond what he thought himself capable of. And can I just say how much I love his sword? I think that's one of the best Divine Objects I've seen. So versatile if the owner knows how to wield it. He is a good character, and after what happened to him later on, now I'm more curious than ever.
And Alice, well she also grew a lot. Despite her Integrity Knight rank there's still something of her deep down, not quite reachable yet, but at least it has allowed her to become a much more important character for this part of the story. I think it'll be interesting to see her move forward, and then I wonder what will happen to the character we know now if she gets her true memories back... It'd be interesting.
As for Administrator and the Senate, boy is that even scarier than I first thought. That woman is a complete menace to this world, and the Senate, well, let's just say that's a completely different kind of horror. This is bad, far worse than I thought. I really can't wait for them to fight Administrator... and that one extra Knight. Oh boy, were in for a treat all right.

Absolutely incridible job from Kawahara Reki, before you go to read this novel, make sure you had well know about Underworld Concept and stuff, cause damn it took me awhile to understand whole concept, really cool and fascinating concept, complexity and detail about fluctlight and underworld system really driving me into another level of fantasy, i know this is too exageratting but i impressed how the author really go to reasearch first about AI and stuff in real world and make it "nearly" like real world concept, i wish we have that kind of stuff in 2022, ameeenn....
As a student that study AI and robotic stuff in highschool, i see this as a tool to driving my imagination and echance my understanding about how such a simple concept like looping system or type of AI can really inspire people out there to make story like this, i know SAO is not about Sao game anymore, but the author want to exlore more in the industry and the world of VR game especially in fulldive technology itself, this is why i love SAO : Alicization arc story becoz it doesnt sell much fanservice, well there is little, it sell well develop story and crazy concept about AI&VR industry in future, it makes student like me to have a spirit to develop more in this industry...
If you want to read this series, it sells LOTS of concept about AI &VR, so prepare your mind, but dont worry becoz the author had explained all in the novel, but the fun part is when you really googling about the concept itself, really fascinating...

I've already watched the anime and I must say I'm enjoying reading the source material. There is so much context and additional material to found, it's like experiencing the story all over again.
For instance, in the anime, we don't get such a strong sense of the bond between Kirito and Eugeo, and particularly their respective envy and admiration.
On one side, Euego sees Kirito as this ace warrior: flawlessly confident, highly skilled, possessing the wisdom to know how to act in all situations, and can even toss a witty quip in combat while concentrating on a spell.
On the other side, Kirito sees Euego as this sword prodigy who will definitely surpass him in short order and who possesses the determination that he lacks. It's like he thinks of Euego as the real deal, a real swordsman hero out of a story, while thinking of himself as only a gamer who happens to have lots of experience playing such a role.
Because of this, they both see themselves as less capable facing their respective challenges in this volume than the other. It also underscores the setback each of them faces in the latter parts of the novel.
I could go on about how much I like this story, such as Euego's cleverness in his duel with Bercouli, or Kirito talking Alice onto his side, and how Alice breaks the Seal of the Right Eye, the fair-folk way that Quinella charms Euego, and how all this is written, and the emotional content added to make it all more than simple exposition, but that would make this review too long. Suffice to say, the source material is well worth a read, even if and especially if you've watched the anime already.

Alicization Dividing is the 5th book in the Alicization chapter for Sword Art Online. I find the title perfectly fitting for the volume for we get to see how divided Kirito and his friend and partner Eugeo are by both the walls of Centuria, but also by their motivations, aspirations, and feelings toward one another. As Kirito makes his climb up the tower with Alice Synthesis Thirty, Eugeo tries to do the same but finds himself capture by the Pontifex's minions. Without a strong will like his friend he finds himself succumbing to other influences.
To me the volume shows how joined at the hip they were and how we see Eugeo react when his rambunctious yet level headed partner is no longer around. The voice that the volume has that tells him to run just makes me feel like it was an internal Kirito he had to make up for the lack of his friend and how it was just too small for him to listen to.
For Kirito's and Alice's side, hearing how Alice craves to know more about herself and to see this thing through for the sake of her sister, Selka, her village, Ruild, and also for the sake of the world too, was impressive. Additionally, I like that Kawahara isn't making her a love interest and well we can only hope that remains the same. To be, I kind of wonder if there are some feelings for Eugeo here as Kirito continues to call him friend and partner...while meanwhile Alice is just a friend they want to save. If only.

This volume felt a bit shorter than the previous one. We get trope-ish RomCom interactions with Alice and Kirito. While they Alice side was strange, Kirito's side wasn't so badly done. We do have a setup moment where Alice's main desire ends up not being her sister or Eugeo. Strange. We also get to see Eugeo have to battle without Kirito and relay on his own improvements and battle sense. We also get to see how the Administrator modifies the Integrity Knights and why they are called Synthesis ##. Alice is also forced to see the horrors that the Administrator perpetuates to maintain hers and the Axiom Churches control over the world. We end on a cliffhanger and it left me feeling like this should have been longer than it actually was.

For. Fuck. Sake. Just couldnt end the arc with this book? It has to go on for AT LEAST one more? No. I refuse.
Sword art was my first exposure to the trapped in a video game, in particular an MMO as a genre. It started with some interesting ideas and if you ignored the harem it was, at times, really well done.
Momentum kept me going through the series, hoping that they would start getting better and dig into the world. And to be fair they did... by having less and less of the harem. The less Asuna and friends show up in the book the better that book is relative to the others. And this book reaches a high point in that respect. But its just not good enough to redeem the rest of it.

3. Maybe 3½ stars. Perhaps it was because Kawahara seemingly promised me (us) something in the last book and I feel like it failed to deliver. Yes, yes, we get to see more of Alice and meet the 'big bad' and find out what happens to Eugeo and end on another bit of a cliffhanger... but it just felt somewhat blah to me. (And of course so little Ausna and Rinko it is hardly worth dinging stars for it... but if he didn't want them to be part of the story, he should not have put them there in the early volumes!)
Verdict: Should have been part of the last book or maybe the next one should have been part of this (which ignores writing and publishing schedules) but still just felt too little. It continues the Alicization arc which generally is interesting so keep at it.

So I enjoyed this book, as I expected to. It illuminated a few things that weren't clear in the anime, but still left them more vague than I'd hoped. I think my main complaint, if it's not too silly, is that it was just so short. It felt like the overarching story hardly made progress. Maybe that's just my perspective because I've seen the anime and therefore know what's coming. Either way, I just wish it were a little longer.
I don't feel like I'm able to give this series my normal, thoughtful literary reviews, because it's essentially just me consuming the content another way after enjoying the anime. But I did enjoy it, and I'd recommend the whole series, just with caveats depending on the person.

He leído los 12 anteriores volúmenes y no me había dignado a dejar mis impresiones. Pues debo decir que a esta altura la nueva historia que se presenta en 'Underworl' al parecer está superando a lo ocurrido en 'Sword Art Online'. Kirito consigue una nueva vida -mientras inconcientemente lucha por la vida real- y sigue un camino acompañado de un joven leñador de nombre Eugeo, al que no recuerda como su amigo de toda la vida. Ambos con la meta de acabar con la máxima autoridad y recuperar a su amiga de la infancia Alice, arrebatada hace 8 años. El momento en que la espada blanca y la espada negra se enfrenten a llegado.

It was very predictable, a necessary but boring transition book before the promised big one, at least it went fast with a few surprises and an anti-climax with a promised character, we finally get to know Alice as a developed character and some gruesome and horrible truths about the senate, we hear just a small morning routine with Asuna and no more.

Classic plotline. Good character creation.
Continues the SAO saga. The plot is unpredictable in execution and entertaining. I like the plot of Underworld and the RATH project over it. I hope the author explores some sort of interaction between the two.

Some fun concepts, but most of the time random stuff happens because random stuff is needed to progress the story. Reki has some good ideas, but he's really bad at telling a story :/ This volume could easily have been split between 12 and 14. Guess it was money making time, can't blame the guy :D

I really enjoy these light novels. All the extra details, more in-depth stories and backgrounds of the characters really add to the story. It’s just like the anime but more in-depth. This book was my favorite though since it mostly dealt with Eugeo. Looking forward to the next one!

I enjoyed the amazing fights and Bernoulli was so cool! My problem is with how Eugeo was so easily manipulated!!! It pisses me of how far he gets and in a matter of minutes it’s all lost, basically.

¡Muchas emociones! la alianza que hicieron Alice y Kirito para escalar a salvo el edificio tuvo un buen termino, aunque no recupero la memoria ya son aliados, me habría encantado que Eugeo presencie ese momento, de igual manera fue genial la escena donde Alice rompe el Index Tabu.
Me encanto cuando Kirito hace una semblanza de su vida en "Underworld", rememorando que Eugeo siempre estuvo a su lado, que es el primer amigo cercano que tiene, aquella persona con la cual al fin puedo conectarse, sentirse cómodo, sin ninguna tensión y ser genuino; esa añoranza de su amistad me conmovió, ya que si bien tiene amigos de S.A.O., siempre estuvo rodeado de feminas y los amigos hombres que tenía eran mayores que él; incluso admitió que con Asuna solo una vez le mostró su interior cuando todo termino en Aincrand, así que todo eso solo hace ver cuanto aprecia y ha calado en el Eugeo, así como en mí.
La pelea entre Eugeo y Bercouli me sorprendió, no me esperaba que Eugeo fuera tan fuerte para prácticamente vencer a #1 Bercouli; deteste a ese odioso complejo de payaso que apareció al final de la batalla.
¡EUGEO NO! como se atreve Administrador a lavarle el cerebro y ponerlo a pelear con Kirito, aunque doloroso, también es emocionante este duelo que se avecina entre alumno y maestro.

Una cosa sí que es cierta: estos no son los mejores libros del mundo ¡pero cómo entretienen! No me importa si la historia va lenta y suceda una cosa mala tras otra, los personajes y la clarísima descripción de las peleas valen todo el tiempo invertido en esta serie. Ya me auto-spoileé lo que sucede en las siguientes novelas y ya sabía incluso lo que pasaba en esta, pero de todas formas me causó mucha conmoción la situacion de Eugeo. Ya para este punto muchos nos habremos encariñado con él; yo creo que es de los personajes a los que quieres cuidar a toda costa y cuando algo malo le pasa de verdad que pega en el alma.
Lo mismo me pasó con los Integrity Knights derrotados (menos con Fizel y Linel), leer sus historias y todo lo que han sufrido por culpa de Administrator hace que el título de "villanos de turno" salga sobrando. Ellos son solo víctimas. El honor de Bercoulli y la razón por la que Fanatio oculta su identidad me pusieron a pensar acerca de muchas cosas. Quiero que estos dos tengan su final feliz.
Creo que hasta ahora, este ha sido el libro más emocional de este arco.
Y eso que me faltan 6 libros más. 😵

After reading the the last 7 or 8 on my holiday last year - with volume 12 ending in a real cliffhanger I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one!
Yes I really enjoyed it. Alice for some reason is pictured in my head as Saber from Fate/Stay Night, but other than that distraction it was thoroughly enjoyable as an afternoon read.
Unfortunately, and I don't think this is a spoiler, rather a warning, this is not the last of the Alicization light novels in this series, so don't get your hopes up for a satisfying ending just yet! There is at least one more novel in this series, lets just hope Kawahara gets it written in a reasonable time frame.
On a positive note 'Gun Gale Online' Anime has been green lighted - another item on the 'can't wait' list...
