Her columns about the absurdist Russian everyday life were collected and published as Petersburgse vertellingen in 1999. After her return to the Netherlands she worked several years at the weekly HP/De Tijd. Her highly praised debut novel De overtreder (The Transgressor) came out in 2007 and was published in German in 2010 by Suhrkamp Verlag, under the title Amsterdam und zurück. Since 2009 she has worked as a weekly columnist for the political magazine Vrij Nederland. In 2010 her second novel, the historical De Nederlandse maagd (The Dutch Maiden). was published, and translated into German (Die niederländische Jungfrau, Suhrkamp Verlag). In 2011, it was awarded with the AKO Literatuurprijs, the best known prize for literature in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Maiden takes place in 1936 when a 16 year old Dutch girl who loves fencing is packed off to train under a former friend of her father's, the deeply scarred (mentally and physically) German aristocrat Egon von Botticher. From thereon it is a kind of gothic coming of age tale, heavily influenced by Rebecca/Wuthering Heights. There's a big country house, lot of brooding sexuality, some odd/spooky goings on, some political tension and a fair bit of prancing around with weapons. It is a bit daft, but very readable, though occasionally a little disjointed.
I bought this book on a total whim, partly because the physical book is so beautiful. It is a nice weight paperback, with bevelled edges and feels lovely to hold, plus the pages stay open - always a bonus. I am going to hunt out other World Editions books :-)

Couldn't get through it. Language was almost too fully packed. Great sentences, but I lost the forest for the trees. I never really got into the story. There was no hook for me.

Mi ljudi, kao vrsta, pronalazimo silno zadovoljstvo u smišljanju, crtanju, oblikovanju,a potom i prekrajanju granica. Radilo se o njihovu fizičkom kretanju ili slobodnom toku njihovih misli, uživamo u ograničavanju drugih. Problem je što, ograničavanjem drugog, možda i nehotice, ograničavamo sebe. Otvaramo kutije kako bismo se u njih udobno smjestili, podižemo zidove i, ograđujući se, zapravo se ograničavamo. Ukalupljeni nam se život omilio i ne pitamo se, ili se vrlo rijetko pitamo, što će se dogoditi jednom kad granice dovedemo do njihovih granica.
Granice u ratnim i predratnim vremenima posebno su zanimljiv fenomen. Granice što ih iscrtavamo na geografskim kartama nalaze se tada u popriličnom raskoraku s granicama što ih u sebe upisujemo. Ili, bolje rečeno, s granicama koje se u nas upisuju rođenjem. Predratno nas stanje, naime, nagoni da fizičke, a opet tako imaginarne, geografske granice, još čvršće utvrdimo i, poput toplog ogrtača, stisnemo oko sebe. Kako bi nam pružile tako prijeko potreban, i tako lažan, osjećaj sigurnosti. Stišćemo ih i zavrćemo, zatvaramo dok nismo posve sigurni da više nitko osim nas i naših ne može kroz njih proći.
S druge strane, one unutarnje granice nikada nisu protočnije nego u ratom oparenim razdobljima. Dok se, s fizičke strane, imamo potrebu zaštititi, na onoj drugoj, ponutrenoj razini, potreba za iskušavanjem novoga jednaka je svijesti o blizini i vjerojatnosti gubitka. A gubitak i naslućivanje kraja navode nas da se trgnemo, da u svoje granice upišemo i nešto što bismo, uljuljkani u maštariju beskonačnog trajanja, vrlo lako mogli ostaviti vani.
Upravo su granice osnovna tema trećeg romana nizozemske književnice Marente de Moor, Nizozemske djeve. U osvit Drugog svjetskog rata jedan otac svoju kći šalje na obuku starom prijatelju. Iz Maastrichta u Aachen, na putovanje dugo tek četrdesetak kilometara. Iz neutralne, djevičanske Nizozemske u zadahom rata obavijenu i predratnom mržnjom zagađenu Njemačku. Na putovanje iz sadašnjosti u prošlost koje bi djevojci, nada se otac, moglo donijeti bolji pogled na budućnost, a njemu priliku da ispravi jednu davno počinjenu pogrešku.
Ova je tema, iskupljenja grijeha iz prošlosti posredstvom tada još nerođene djece, stara koliko i ratovanje, stara koliko i čovječanstvo. Ili bar koliko i povijest književnosti. No ono što Nizozemsku djevu izdvaja od ostalih, tematski i stilski srodnih romana, jest metafora kojom autorica cijelu priču opisuje. Mačevanje. Je li mačevanje borilački sport ili umjetnost? Odvija li se ono ispred ili iza maske i bori li se mačevalac, zapravo, protiv onog drugog ili protiv sebe samog? Pobjeđuje li i kada gubi ili gubi čak i kada pobjeđuje? Jasno određenim pravilima unatoč, moguća su, dapače i poželjna, odstupanja, a čvrsto se utvrđene granice, baš kao i u vanjskom svijetu, mijenjaju iz sekunde u sekundu navodeći pritom i sudionike borbe na neprestanu prilagodbu.
Je li to život, zapitat će se čitatelj iščitavajući Nizozemsku djevu. Neprestana borba u kojoj se gubitak nevinosti plaća krvlju, a ožiljci su ružni i trajni, ali nužni kako bi se prelazak granica među razdobljima života označio i ostao kao trajan biljeg svome nositelju. Poput žiga u putovnici, poput znaka vjerodostojnosti životnom iskustvu.
I doista, u osvit Drugog svjetskog rata, jedna je djevojka izgubila nevinost, jedna je majka izgubila sina, a jedan je dječak, nadajući se stjecanju samopouzdanja, izgubio mnogo više. Dvojica su muškaraca, poput zvrkova, zavrtjeli priču, ali njihove se osi, kako to obično biva, nisu dotakle. Propustili su se kao što vrlo često u životu propuštamo najvažnije stvari; u hitnji, za tren. U osvit Drugog svjetskog rata neke su se granice učvrstile, stisnule, samo kako bi dosegle točku krutosti kojoj neminovno slijedi pucanje….
Sedamdesetak godina po završetku Drugog svjetskog rata Marente de Moor napisala je roman, upisala je u njega sve ljudskom umu zamislive oblike i vrste granica, ostavljajući pritom čitatelju širinu. Nije ga zatvorila u granice svoga uma, štoviše, otvorenošću i protočnošću svoga stila svakom ga stranicom nutka da misli, da propituje, da se ne ograničava. Jer mačevanje je, možda, kao i priča s granicama, predstava za mase. No s posljedicama te predstave živjeti mora svatko tko u njoj pristane sudjelovati.

Alles is zeer voorspelbaar, het thematiek ligt er dik op en de seksscènes zijn zeer preuts. Ik heb in een tienerboek meer heftige seksscènes gezien. Het verhaal wordt in het verleden vertelt door het meisje dat begrijp je vaag in een van de laatste hoofdstukken. Ook is duidelijk dat ze zich nog een meisje voelt aan het begin van de zomer als ze daar aan komt maar zodra ze seks gehad heeft met haar meester vond ze zich volwassen en beter dan haar medeleerlingen, een engelachtige tweeling. Je hebt een man met twee gezichten en twee jongens met een gezicht en iedereen wordt smoorverliefd op het enige meisje. De broers willen er om vechten maar ze weten natuurlijk niet dat het jonge meisje voor de oude man is gegaan, die even oud is als haar vader, die ze daarna nooit meer zal zien.

Als De Nederlandse Maagd niet als kerstcadeautje onder de boom had gelegen, had ik het boek waarschijnlijk niet uitgelezen. Ik heb me het hele boek zitten afvragen waar het nou eigenlijk over ging en toen ik daar op de laatste bladzijde achterkwam dacht ik :Was dat nou alles?
Misschien wordt het boek voor iemand die van schermen houdt al wat interessanter, want daar word je het hele boek mee doodgegooid. Als dat niet zo is, zoals bij mij, dan heb je dus ontzettende pech.
Marente schrijft theatraal, maakt hoogdravende zinnen die niet prettig lezen.
Geen idee, waarom zij de winnaar is van de AKO literatuurprijs. Ik heb me door het boek heengeworsteld en ben blij dat ik het uit heb.
Misschien wordt het boek voor iemand die van schermen houdt al wat interessanter, want daar word je het hele boek mee doodgegooid. Als dat niet zo is, zoals bij mij, dan heb je dus ontzettende pech.
Marente schrijft theatraal, maakt hoogdravende zinnen die niet prettig lezen.

Let's see. Here we have a coming of age story serving as a foreground for the real story: a man broken by war and the changing times who's been holding a grudge for years.
Set in pre-WW2 Germany, the story occasionally dealt with valid questions and moral dilemmas (the rise of national socialism, changing traditions, honor and loyalty, the role and ethical implications of medicine in the battlefield), but I felt like it never went into the depths of anything. There was no moment that got me hooked on reading, it mostly just felt like wanting to be done with it.
If you're into a gothic atmosphere, eccentric characters and bad sex scenes, this book is for you.

It isn't that easy, at least for me to escape the charm of a story regarding some dark and mysterious man and a young girl's affection towards him. This was what first lead me to buy the book and read it. My attraction towards some gothic tale wasn't disappointed when the background of the story was painted in the first chapters: a big farm, a dark and empty house full of tales and the loneliness and temper of its owner. It was so easy to feel yourself part of it, walking the halls and stairs, the rooms, an evocative description of a place that was about to reveal itself chapter by chapter.
It was the first time I read about fencing in a book. The choice of this specific sport isn't a coincidence. Even if you are a dilettante as myself, you get to understand the real meaning of it. Fencing is about precision, attention, mental strength. tactics ,courage and respect for the opponent. Fencing is an art and for aristocrats as Egon von Bötticher, it represents a badge of HONOR. And in fact, Honor is what lays behind the story of Egon. As we get to know from the letters exchanged between him and Janna's father, their relationship is quite a turmoiled one. It brings us back in the WWI, where this doctor saved his life. Brought in a camp, he was unable to fight again. His mental status was altered and the wound s of the war were too deep to be healed even years later. Cause leaving the battle field meant for him abandoning his mission, his own honor. In the letters, we get familiar with the full portrait of the war, how it changes humanity. By humanity I don't mean only men losing their limbs, or fields covered in blood. I mean humans that are redefined mentally as much as physically. I mean Humanity getting lost under some badges and flags and uniforms, under causes that probably were never actually understood. So I recall the great impact that the war had on psychiatry. The soldiers suffering post traumatic disorders brought into consideration the role of such dreadful events on human minds. There isn't, in my opinion of course, a more transforming experience than facing the horrors of the war.
As we face flashbacks of the WWI, there are threats of another war to come, WWII. Between the lines we get to know the real brainwash of the population, their appreciation towards the most hated historical figures of the century, Hilter. He was raising an entire nation, with the promise of bringing glory to the german name. The climate of this upcoming war is felt even in the farm, where "mensur", a fencing tradition now forbidden, is taking place.
The revelation of the war has a great impact on Janna. Reading the letters sent(or not) between her father and his friend, she gets to know more her maitre. It's his dark and vigorous portrait that makes her fall in love with him. Their relation is passionate, dark, never stable, never quite satisfying for a young girl full of dreams. She sleeps with him but yet finds him distant, a man lost in his dark I think their relation was the means of her growing up and secondly, was the key of revealing the relation between the two men.
But I come to the point of admitting the things I didn't like in the book.
First of all, I would have liked a more profound description of Janna's feeling between her and Egon. Since I do write myself, to me is fundamental to explore step by step the changes that happen inside the characters. It's true that we get descriptions of Egon with her own words, her thoughts of him before meeting him or when he becomes her maitre but her affection towards him is distant till the moment she admits it, when she sees him in black. The scene of the house, farm, the tension. Every thing was there and me,as a reader was ready to have their romance reveal itself gradually. Not just the actions but the changes they brought in her psyche.
My other point is the storytelling. I liked too much the atmosphere the author created, the descriptions helped me as a reader get a portray of the place and its parallelism with the owner's inner situation. But the events happening lack the ups and downs. It seems all so linear. I expect something big to happen and when it happens, it seems as it passes by unnoticed. The plot was perfect to create more suspense that came a bit vague.
To conclude my review, except my last critics, the story and moreover the message behind, are enough reasons to have the book in the readinglist. Literature's mission remains making the readers expand their view towards life, a journey through imaginary times and places that in a way or another are a mere reflection of our owns.

Allereerst: prachtig Nederlands, vele zinnen en beelden die je meteen eens herleest of laat naklinken in gedachten. Ten tweede: dit verhaal nodigt je uit in een nieuwe wereld, die van de schermsport en dat levert verrassende inzichten. Ten derde: alles bij elkaar bleef het verhaal teveel op afstand om me echt te kunnen raken.

Ik vond het stilistisch een mooi boek, maar het verhaal en de personages waren niet altijd even sterk. Het einde vond ik ronduit teleurstellend. Veel symboliek, maar naar mijn idee niet altijd goed uitgewerkt of betekenisloos.

Ik geloof niet dat mijn soort lezen is. Zij wordt vergeleken met W.F. Hermans, dat gaat me wat ver, ze schrijft zeer behoorlijk, maar nog niet Hermans waardig.

Jannin oče Jacq, se odloči, da svojo 18. letno hčerko pošlje k prijatelju iz mladosti, Egonu von Bötticherju, učitelju sabljanja. Janna si, še preden učitelja spozna, o njem ustvari romantična čustva. Seveda pa ne gre vse tako, kot si je ona zamišljala. Na železniškem peronu jo pričaka moški z izmaličeno stranjo obraza. Moški, ki se zdi še preveč samozavesten in neprijazen. Janna se v njega zaljubi in med njima se splete ljubezensko razmerje.
Janni v dvorcu delata družbo Leni in njen mož Heinz, ki skrbita za dvorec in gospodinjstvo. Poleg njiju, pa se ji pridružita pri učenju sabljanja še dva fanta njene starosti, dvojčka, Siegbert in Friedrich. Sinova ženske, ki prijateljuje z učiteljem in med katerima je tudi zgodovina. V dvorcu jim velikokrat prekinejo njihovo rutino in "mir" drugi študentje in učitelji sabljanja.
V dvorcu se tudi že čuti pritisk nacizma in prihajajoče druge svetovne vojne.
Knjiga se je lepo brala. Zgodba mi je sicer bila malo zakomplicirana, oziroma mogoče sem imela občutek, da je bilo okrog učitelja in Janninega očeta ustvarjeno čisto preveč drame. Tudi vse skrivnosti okrog njiju se mi niso zdele nič posebnega. Bolj kot sama zgodba, me je vse drugo pritegnilo. Opisi dvobojev, ogromno detajlov in učiteljev odnos do živali.

Een 18-jarig Nederlands meisje wordt door haar vader naar een afgelegen landgoed in Duitsland gestuurd om te leren schermen. Het is 1936 en het Nationaal Socialisme is volop in opkomst. De schermleraar, Egon von Bötticher, is een vroegere vriend van Janna's vader. Von Bötticher is een huzaar die in de Eerste Wereldoorlog zwaar gewond is geraakt en ook psychisch niet ongeschonden is gebleven. Inmiddels zijn hij en Janna's vader gebrouilleerd en Janna probeert erachter te komen wat er gebeurd is. Aan de hand van brieven die ze ontdekt in Egon Von Bötticher's kamer wordt heel langzaam steeds meer duidelijk.
Zowel Egons, als Janna, zijn interessante persoonlijkheden. Het verhaal draait grotendeels om hen. De andere personages zijn figuranten. Zoals de schermende tweeling Friedriech en Siegbert, hun moeder Julia, de huishoudster Leni en haar nazistische man Heinz. Schrijfster De Moor houdt het spannend, door de ontwikkelende relatie tussen Von Bötticher en Janna, het mysterie van de ruzie tussen Von Bötticher en Janna's vader, de hernieuwde oorlogsdreiging en het opkomend nazisme, en door de bloedige schermduels die plaatsvinden op het landgoed.
Een aantal ideeën zijn misschien niet helemaal goed uitgewerkt. Janna heeft duidelijk een slecht zelfbeeld, dat komt op een aantal punten terug, maar de uitwerking is wat clichématig. De relatie tussen Egon en Janna is soms ongeloofwaardig (wat ziet hij in haar?). En de figuranten in het verhaal blijven heel eendimensionaal. Het idee over symmetrie, wat ook te maken heeft met de tweeling, blijft wat op de vlakte. Toch is het spannend genoeg, goed geschreven. Ik heb het in één ruk uitgelezen. En de ideeën die erin zijn verwerkt zijn toch boeiend. Ik ben benieuwd hoe ze het in een volgend boek aanpakt. Ik blijf haar boeken volgen!

Op p. 135-136 vertelt de hoofdpersoon uitgebreid en op indringende wijze aan de tweeling dat ze met Egon, alias ‘de Golem’ geslapen heeft.
Op p. 264 blijkt ook de moeder van de tweeling ervan te weten. Maar de hoofdpersoon vraagt zich af: ‘Hoe wist ze het? Egon had zeker niets gezegd, misschien was de tweeling erachter gekomen en hadden zij iets aan hun moeder verteld… ’.
Op p. 284 ‘stormt’ Heinz, naar buiten, hoewel hij even daarvoor nog zijn voet ernstig heeft verstuikt…
De vertellende hoofdpersoon is vóór 1920 geboren, maar gebruikt zonder aarzelen een uitdrukking als ‘drie keer niks’, eet ‘gevulde’ koeken als die nog uitgevonden moeten worden, ziet ‘balen hooi’ als daar in de verte nog geen sprake van kan zijn en beschrijft een grammofoonplaat zoals iemand zou doen die zo’n plaat alleen van horen zeggen kent (een ding van ‘bakkeliet’).
En toch, hoewel dus slordig, is het een goed boek, prachtige stijl, mooie metaforen (al gaat het 'alsof' op zeker moment wel irriteren) en intelligent.

In de zomer van 1936 wordt de jonge schermster Janna door haar vader op de trein gezet om in de leer te gaan bij zijn oude vriend, maître Egmond von Bötticher op een landgoed bij Aken. Intrigerend thema: de kunst van het schermen. Beladen geschiedenis, je voelt de tweede wereldoorlog naderen, je voelt hoe duisternis de overhand neemt. Een vleugje erotiek, want wat zich tussen de jonge schermster en de maître zal afspelen laat zich raden. Ook de dood komt om de hoek kijken. Een rijk boek, mooi van taal. Dat het me niet echt raakte zegt niets over de kwaliteit van dit werk. Bij een roman gaat het om de wisselwerking tussen auteur, personages en lezer. De ene combinatie is de andere niet. Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux, zou Aragon zeggen.

The heroine’s intense emotional world, the foreboding atmosphere of pre-World War II Germany and the richness of de Moor’s imagination that make The Dutch Maiden one of the most delicious novels I’ve read in ages. While the narrative drags a bit in stretches, I couldn’t put it down. Perhaps a good story can, like a love affair, be likened to swordplay: “A good fencing match has moments of stillness. ... Without stillness, a duel descends into a blind scuffle that ends in slaughter.” A sentiment that seems apt for both love and battle.

Mooi Boek, er is ook een hoorspelversie van gemaakt, die heel aardig is om te luisteren wanneer je vooral bent geïnteresseerd in de verhaallijn. Je mist natuurlijk veel van de schrijfstijl dan.

Te veel seks voor een book met maagd in de titel. Voor de rest wel een aanrader.
Het open einde deed pijn en was vervelend. Het liet me met veel vragen. Maar, het was het enigste wat een goed einde had kunnen zijn voor dit boek, ik weet niet waarom maar je moet me maar geloven.

Eighteen-year-old Janna is a good fencer who is sent by her father to live with an expert swordsman to perfect her craft.
Some women, it is often stated, find men with dark personalities attractive. I suppose this was true in the case of Janna, who fell in love with Egon Botticher. I question if this is the reason behind Egon's narcissistic character or if it has something to do with prior warfare dealings between Janna's father and Egon. What, exactly, transpired?
De Moor's descriptions of the Raeren (Egon's estate and where he taught fencing) gave me Jane Eyre vibes; dark and queer like Egon.
There were several instances when I found her writing witty. For example, the way she described Egon and his relationship with animals, the twins, the horse incident, etc., afforded me a good laugh.
What becomes of the duo when the past bullies the future?
This book was a thrilling read for me.

I am rounding up from 1.5 stars because this book is no where near as terrible as the 1-star The Long Silence of Mario Salviati. However, much like Mario Salviati, I am forced to wonder how my feelings for this novel are driven by the translation, rather than by the story. The story itself, which is told through letters from World War I and the narrative of Janna, is fine -- there are not really any plot twists that surprise the reader, but de Moor does an excellent job establishing the malevolent forces outside of the Raeran estate, slowly pushing their way in as the Nazi party's power increases across Germany. However, I found the characters to be one-dimensional, and while fencing is presumably the reason why all of these characters (with the exception of Leni and Heinz) descend upon Raeran, I personally struggled to follow the metaphors between fencing and the events occurring within the estate.

Waarom lees je nooit iets van een vrouwelijke auteur, vroeg onlangs een dame aan mij. Ik ga wat meer dames lezen ondanks dat het boekenweekgeschenk geen goede voorbode was... Marenthe de Moor dan maar. Zij schreef een bijzondere roman waarvoor ze een paar jaar geleden de AKO literatuurprijs ontving. In "De Nederlandse maagd" lees ik in zorgvuldig geformuleerde zinnen over nogal mysterieuze toestanden tussen twee gebrouilleerde makkers uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog, en schimmige verhoudingen op de schermtrainingen tussen het enige meisje, haar maître en een knappe tweeling. En dat allemaal tegen de achtergrond van een afgelegen en vervallen landgoed vlak voor het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De vriendschap, de liefdesverhoudingen en ook de schermsport blijven na het lezen van het boek mysteries voor mij...

Dit boek greep me niet bij de keel, maar deed me op subtiele manier toch weer steeds verderlezen, bladzijde na bladzijde.
Voor mij altijd een goed teken.
Een zeer mooi verhaal waar je toch je hoofd goed bij moet houden zodat je alles meehebt, al vermoeide het niet...
De personages zijn mooi uitgewerkt en de verschillende lagen van het boek vloeien mooi in elkaar.
Ik heb het 4 sterren gegegven.
Voor mij altijd een goed teken.

Looks like Dutch Literature and me are growing apart... The book took a hold on the author, not vice versa. Published at least one or two years too early, that is: before the ideas she wants to use could really mature. She knows how to write in style though and didn't agree with the nomination for a major Dutch Award at all, so, who knows what she can achieve in the future...

Dit boek staat bol van prachtige zinnen en rake observaties over mens en dier. De Moor slaagt er in een bevreemdend universum te scheppen, en is meesterlijk in het beschrijven van sfeer en dreiging zonder het expliciet te worden. Zeer graag gelezen, dit boek en ik kijk uit naar volgend werk van deze talentvolle schrijfster.

Piękna, nieuchwytna, melancholijna, zmysłowa, momentami mroczna historia z elementami realizmu magicznego. Ta książka zajmie szczególne miejsce w moim sercu. Więcej o tym dziele na razie nie napiszę, bo jeszcze jestem jedną nogą w Raeren, jeszcze nie przetrawiłam zakończenia... Literatura z najwyższej półki, po prostu.

Janna ze spokojnej holenderskiej rzeczywistości trafia do Niemiec 1936 roku, gdy naziści doszli do władzy. Ojciec wysyła ją do starego przyjaciela, Egona von Böttichera, by ten uczył ją szermierki. Robi to w dobrej wierze, chcąc zakopać stare spory i pomóc córce w spełnieniu marzenia o zostaniu najlepszą szermierką. Przebieg jej wyjazdu oraz jego priorytety szybko ulegają jednak zmianie, gdy dziewczyna zakochuje się w swoim sporo starszym nauczycielu.

Cenię sobie lektury, które zmuszają do myślenia. Przy których chwila nieuwagi może sprawić, że umknie nam coś istotnego. Takie, dla których musimy wygospodarować czas nie tylko na czytanie, ale również na przemyślenia, których mamy pełną głowę. „Holenderska dziewczyna” okazała się być właśnie taką powieścią. Pełna napięcia atmosfera, mroczny klimat, zbrukana niewinność i moralność, o której można dyskutować godzinami. To opowieść o bliznach, które pozostały w ludziach, którym przyszło żyć w czasach pochłoniętych przez wojnę (wojnę, którą nazywano ostateczną, choć wkrótce miało nadejść coś znacznie gorszego). Opowieść o zderzeniu starych poglądów i nowych idei. O zakazanej, brudnej miłości, która nie przynosi niczego dobrego. O sytuacji politycznej Niemiec w okresie dzisiaj nazywanym dwudziestoleciem międzywojennym, która stanowi jedynie tło. Pozornie niewinne tło ledwie dostrzegane przez nastolatkę, która odkrywa szarości świata. Która zbyt lekkomyślnie porzuca swoją niewinność – fizyczną oraz psychiczną – czego później żałuje.
A wszystko to dostajemy opisane pięknym stylem autorki, który oczarowuje czytelnika od pierwszych stron.
Główną bohaterką jest osiemnastoletnia Janna, która wychodzi spod bezpiecznych skrzydeł rodziców, by brutalnie zetknąć się z rzeczywistością. W nowym miejscu czuje się początkowo samotna i zagubiona, ale jej serce wypełnia miłość do szermierki. Gdy jednak wdziera się do niego Egon, jej poprzednia miłość przestaje mieć znaczenie. Dziewczyna całą swoją energię i uwagę poświęca jego osobie, chcąc odkryć, co kryje się w jego głowie. Co zaszło między nim i jej ojcem, czemu jest tak nieprzyjemny w obyciu, skąd wzięły się jego blizny... Egon stanowi postać wyrazistą, acz na tyle tajemniczą, że nawet do samego końca nie udaje nam się go całkowicie poznać. Wiemy, że mężczyzna walczył podczas pierwszej wojny światowej, na której poniósł ogromne rany fizyczne oraz psychiczne. Trauma odcisnęła na nim swoje piętno i go ukształtowała. Patrzymy na niego przez pryzmat uczuć zakochanej nastolatki i nie chcemy spojrzeć na niego inaczej w obawie, że okaże się być jedynie cieniem wojny.
Autorka powoli kreśli nam jego osobę, ale nie pozwala nam w pełni go poznać. Pokazuje nam realia tamtych lat i stopniowo zmieniające się nastroje polityczne, ale nie na tym się skupia. Bawi się dorastającą dziewczyną, która zbiera nowe doświadczenia, ale jednocześnie pozwala sobie na kilka niedopowiedzeń i niejasności. Daje nam wszystko i nic jednocześnie.
Po skończeniu książki czuję wiele, ale zupełnie nie potrafię nazwać uczuć, które mnie opanowały. Czuję się pełna, ale nie wiem, co mnie wypełnia. To przedziwny stan, ale bardzo miły dla mojego serca. Równie miły jak ta lektura.
„Holenderska dziewczyna” nie jest powieścią łatwą. Czyta się ją powoli i równie powoli tonie się w świecie kreowanym przez autorkę. Nim zdążymy się zorientować, nasze płuca już wypełnione są wodą i toniemy, przed czym nie ma już ratunku. Jest to lektura, która zostaje w człowieku i nie chce opuścić jego serca pomimo mijających dni. Czytelnik dzięki niej biegnie za tak wieloma myślami, że może nawet nie udać mu się złapać żadnej z nich. To taka książka, którą prawdopodobnie można przeczytać kilka razy, a każdy raz będzie niczym pierwszy. W mój gust czytelniczy wpasowała się idealnie.
