This Is Asperger Syndrome

Rate this book
Through brief vignettes and whimsical black-and-white cartoon drawings, This Is Asperger Syndrome introduces siblings, peers and other children to the everyday challenges faced by children with Asperger Syndrome at home or at school. Written for children ages 6-12, the book may be read independently by older children and serves as an excellent springboard for further discussion led by parents and teachers. A special section, Notes on Asperger Syndrome, at the end of the book summarizes the major characteristics of Asperger Syndrome.

The translation to Spanish for this book was incredible help. In the Latin culture, autism is difficult to discuss. You come from generations where people just smack the kid on the head and say move on and do it. This book was able to express in detail how a child with aspergers processes. It's a great book to always go back to for my family.

This is where my denial comes in. This book is short, seemingly insubstantial, with rudimentary drawings and very (to me) simplistic text explaining the challenges a child with Asperger faces during a typical day.

I read it first, and thought to myself, that very few of these situations had anything to do with my very social, very happy, very bright ASD child. Then I gave it to said child, and asked him to read it and let me know if any of the sections applied to him. And he sat there, and he read, and he nodded, over and over. We talked and I realized how much I try to simplify his situation sometimes. It was eye-opening. I also think this book gave him as much validation as the book about how Newton and Einstein most likely fell on the spectrum, too.
