Amo Final Fantasy.

Avevo:
Ace, Nine, Cater, Sice, Eight, Jack, Trey, Cinque, Deuce, King, Kurusame, Machina, Rem, Seven

Non avevo:
Queen

Eh….
So I’ve read better manga.
Disappointing for an account of square Enix’ final fantasy story.
The panels were confusing. Cut scenes were way to many and transitions didn’t make sense.
There were far to many main characters. It was hard to keep track of who was who and happening at what point in the story. The drawings of these character were to similar in appearances. Sometimes the only way to distinguish who was who was when they used their magic. None of them had a specific weapon type to help this separation.
I wonder how the other books in the series faired.
Also, I think there was a cliff hanger at the end? Even that didn’t make sense….

Couldn’t really follow along easily, I was so bored, and I did not enjoy this at all. This is definitely not my style of manga. Too much action for me.

Although just starting out, Its becoming apparent that I prefer more relaxing slice of life mangas.

I feel weird not giving anything with the Final Fantasy title a rave review, but I have to admit that I wasn't a fan of this manga. I bought it and the first in the spin-off series that I haven't gotten to read yet. I did however read this manga and was not pleased with the overall product. The cover was well designed and showed true promise for a brilliant tale. The first thing that I noticed when reading the manga is that the art inside the manga is not near as brilliant and breathtaking as the art that the Final Fantasy world has come to offer its fans. The art is pretty similar to what you'd see in any normal manga you'd pick up. I was hoping for stunning artwork accompanied by an action packed and well told story. Well, there was some action...

Although there was a nice amount of action, none of it made sense to me. I got the basic concepts of the story and really think that some of the ideas are fantastic, they just need to be built upon more in-depth. The panels seemed like they were more text and chat bubble space than artwork, and I got the feeling that this was a rush job. It may not have been, but I expected something much more worthy of the Final Fantasy brand. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. At this point I am not sure if I will bother reading any more in the series if they make any other volumes because there is too much really good manga out there to read manga that is just "ok".

While I don't think this is going to knock anyone's socks off, nor does tell the most satisfying and complete story, I still had a good time with the storytelling, art, and overall reading experience.

CONTENT
I believe that this Manga functions as a sort of prequel to the videogame it's tied into. I did give that a try years ago on my Xbox but it was just a rather rough experience both graphically and in terms of gameplay since it was so painfully obvious that it was a portable game given a fresh coat of paint. Needless to say, I didn't get very far in it, but I thought the overall vibe of the characters and world was pretty interesting. I'd redeemed this manga as part of a reward system on the Square Enix website (not sure if that still exists or not) partly because it was one of the more interesting prizes and partly because I'd never tried a Manga before. Years later, I finally gave it a go and I had a reasonably good time with both the story that this tells as well as with the Manga reading experience in general (even though reading from right to left tripped me up numerous times during the readthrough).

One of the things I remember about the game is that there were a rather ridiculous number of playable characters that you could choose to place into your party. This Manga very wisely focusses on three of them with several others playing a supporting role and the rest largely just popping up here and there (sort of similar to how they might factor into one's actual playthrough). I found each of the main character arcs to be compelling and I enjoyed some of the flashback sequences that fleshed out their backstories. I'm not sure if the game's narrative covered any of this content, but if not, then I think avid fans of the game might enjoy getting this added context into Ace, Rem, and Machina. This is also a fascinating world where magic works in some interesting ways. Due to a "blessing" from god-like beings that seem to hold sway over the people, those that die are immediately forgotten by the people that knew them. It's an incredibly dark concept, especially when paired with the fact that this is a war story at it's core with some dark academia trappings, so death is a rather rampant element of the plot. Seeing how characters handled this bizarre phenomenon was quite captivating and I liked some of the subtle suggestions that maybe some memories don't fully disappear. Contrasting the dark subject matter of the story is the trademark melodrama of the Final Fantasy series' dialogue. While it seemed a little stranger in this context, I still appreciated how those interactions kept this feeling true to the overall tone of the franchise. As fascinating as this all was, there ultimately is not a complete story that's told here. I am aware that most Manga take multiple volumes to tell their stories (with some going on and on in apparent perpetuity), but when I looked up this particular series, it seems the additional volumes mostly just tell side stories set in the world as opposed to being a continuation of this narrative (which I assume is only consumable in game-form). That's a bit of a shame, but I may give the other volumes a chance at some point and I may even dust off my copy of the game to see if maybe I can just rip through the story on Easy Mode or something.

PAPERBACK & ARTWORK
Having not read any other Manga before, I have no real frame of reference for what is typical. I went in knowing that the artwork is black and white, which I'm not massively a fan of, but I understand that it helps keep the costs of these down for both publishers and consumers. This one had a full color prologue included which was printed on premium paper and I don't know if this is normal, but it felt like a bit of a tease since it was much nicer to see those panels fully rendered. In general, I thought that the quality of the artwork was all over the place. There was the higher-quality prologue vs. the rest of the pages, but then even some of the greyscale pages were sometimes rendered in much higher fidelity and contrast than usual, particularly around the end of one chapter and start of another. Then there was the usual variance you will see in just about any sort of graphic medium where some panels are super tiny and not very detailed, while others are bigger and more intricately done. Overall, I thought the artwork was nice even when things got a little cramped and some of the action shots were hard to interpret. The paperback itself (I don't know if Manga volumes are typically referred to as a "paperback" or not, but that's what I'm going to go with since I know there are sometimes hardcover omnibus editions that come out) is well made, though the middle part of the pages would sort of bend and crackle strangely toward the middle of the book, possibly because of how many pages are crammed into such a little package. It's quite a cute little thing though and it's compact size made it super easy for me to take this on the go.

CONCLUSION
This one is sort of an interesting case because even though I personally enjoyed my time with it and appreciated dipping my toes into the Manga space through a franchise I'm familiar with, it's hard to say exactly who I'd recommend this to. Certainly fans of the game might have a good time with this even though I know it rehashes some of the information that the game's narrative conveys. To the general Manga reader though, I don't know if this is specifically going to impress you in any way.

(+) The narrative wisely focusses on specific members of Class Zero
(+) Compelling character backstories and motivations
(+) Artwork that nicely captures the characters and the action that they get into (most of the time)
(+) A fascinatingly dark work contrasted by melodramatic dialogue
(+) A nice way for someone like me to give Manga a try
(-) Inconsistent levels of fidelity in the artwork
(-) A somewhat unsatisfying ending to the story that can seemingly only be continued through the game

I recall spending less than 1h on the game and couldn't get into it; it's been years and I have no desire to try again despite spending so much money on the Collector's Edition. Decided to finally read the manga and it was a whole load of meh. Art is quite basic, there's too much going with the plot and requires lots of backstories (maybe I need to have played the game) to understand what's happening. I feel like I've landed halfway through a series, right into the middle of a war I don't understand and characters with powers that seem limitless but unexplained.
FF games are known to have complex stories but they make sense drawn out and played over 40h... not in a manga that can be read in 30min.

Read this before I gave it away - it's okay, but pretty difficult to follow for someone not familiar with the game. The characters are sometimes difficult to tell apart due to the large cast of characters, but the premise seems interesting enough that I may give the game a second chance.

A big type 0 fan and I actually enjoyed this.

Yes it's absolutely a marketing ploy but does somewhat fill some holes and enrich the already existing material.

For starters I like that it's not a one for one adaptation of the games first few chapters but is more about the behind the scenes of the game, the hidden moments between events that occurred in the game such as what Ace, Nine AND Queen were up to before they came to Izana's aid. The character's are very consistent with their game counterparts and this time it actually felt like Ace was a protagonist unlike the game where he was more a mascot for the game. I also loved how the gameplay mechanics influence how the characters are utilised. Rem has the best magic stats and so she readily uses magic in the battlefield. Also there was a funny skirt gag with Cinque that calls back to the game. Unfortunately the volume is bloated with mindless action in the last half that isn't well articulated and moves away from the more character centred stuff. Wish they stuck more with that as this is only one volume and we don't really need a bloated action segment. Overall fine fun stuff.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is very pretty and has a lot of cool concepts to explore, but it tries to do way too much in a single volume of space, leading to a confusing mess. Honestly, I wouldn't mind getting into the lore of this more, but I'd prefer to do that through the game rather than this. I hope that this makes at least marginally more sense if you read it post-game.

I haven't played the game, so I might be missing a lot of context. But this is really a whole bunch of nothing masquerading as action. It's confusing, makes no sense, and jumps around so much just can't get into it. This is pretty much the epitome of a blatant publisher money grab. 🙄 Of course, I also bought the Ice Reaper spin off. 🤞 that it doesn't suck.

Don't know much about final fantasy. Just decided to pick this up and read it before giving it away. The transitions between panels in most scenes are horrible and skip around a bunch. Personally for me it was hard to understand anything that was going on. Didn't care for the story or any of the characters.

It's beautiful, but complicated and underdeveloped.
I haven't played the game so it might be that I'm missing some background info, but I just got more confused as the story progressed.
That said, I'm intrigued and the world pulled me in so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I feel like this was made as just another advertisement tool and they actually didn't put any effort into it.
The art style is alright, but majorly lacking compared to most manga. There's rarely any text.
You won't actually understand any of it unless you play the game.

This manga is basically a way to get people to play the game. As someone who has played Final Fantasy Type-0 already it was nice to see the start again. Overall, it’s nothing too special and doesn’t showcase much. Nice art. Please play the game.

Definitely for Final Fantasy fans only. It's pretty nice visually, and it works as an introduction to the game, but there's too much unexplained lore, and the transitions are not always smooth or clear. I still enjoyed it but I can't overlook its shortcomings.

The actual art is very nice, but the story telling is very clunky even for someone who has played the game and understands what is supposed to be happening.

I have no idea what the story in this book is either. It was very confusing.

Wow this was really bad. I thought it would be a nice alternative to plying the game, but instead this made me wish I played it instead!

Feels like a tiny portion of a much larger story; not sure if it's interesting enough to make me want the rest of it. Too many characters and convoluted names.

Final Fantasy with blood and dismemberment! This is the manga that came with the Collector's Edition of Final Fantasy Type-0. It's not a prequel but rather a side-story taking place near the beginning of the game. There are some extremely minor spoilers but there's nothing here that you won't find out within the first few hours of the main plot. It's a nice bonus story; the art isn't bad and the plot is serviceable. A few strange translation errors got through the localization team for the English version. There's action but none of the gravitas of the game really translated to the manga form, probably because of space constraints. This is apparently the first of a series of three side-story manga taking place in Orience, but as of now this is the only one with an English translation.

When i first bought the game i was a bit confused as to what was going on until it picked up a bit and i was starting to understand. The manga however reallly helped me understand the game a whole lot more and because of that i was really able to enjoy it. I haven`t finished the game just yet, but this manga and even the side story helps put in some of the pieces to the puzzles. I like this and i am glad that they decided to publish this for everyone outside of the collector's edition they bundled this with. Kudos Square enix.

Not the worst manga I've ever read, but not the best either. The characters are wonderful and I think a lot more could be done with them. The story itself seemed hollow and a bit rushed. I think if the time had been taken and maybe a few more volumes were created, it could have turned out quite nicely. My only real complaint was the art flow. Sometimes it was hard to figure out what was happening or that the areas had changed (especially early in the book).

Still, worth a read at least once.

hmmm it was okay. A cool collector's item that came a long with the limited edition of Final Fantasy Type O HD remaster. It clearly is just a companion and side story. Nothing really important aside from intoducing the characters. It was confusing for me but maybe because I still need to play the game to understand it.

It wants to be Final Fantasy VIII with the memories and the school cadets, VII with the fighting back against a big bad Empire like force and it does none of it well. Especially wearing mini-skirts in battle? Simple fetish fuel for otaku, and thus I can't take it seriously. Also uses gendered slurs to make a point and that's a big no-no in my book.
This manga has wrote me off the game.
