Stop allowing critics to rent space in your head!      Are you looking for more in your career than a paycheck? What does it take to find job satisfaction? So many of us are feeling stressed out, taken for granted, and unhappy at the constant pressure, the reorganizations, the politics—do you feel as though you have nothing left to give? Whether you feel a mild dissatisfaction or an intense dislike for your current job, the goal is to find your passion. But to find the right career, you have to let go of the critical inner voice that tells you that you’ll be happier if you make more money, work harder or reach the next promotion. At some point, you’ll need to rethink your assumptions about your career and take a new approach. Should we even expect to be fulfilled and happy at work? Yes, we should, says author Susan Peppercorn. In her new transformative book, Ditch Your Inner Critic at Work. Evidenced-Based Strategies to Thrive in Your Career, she makes the most compelling case yet that career satisfaction―and the full engagement that comes with it―is more important than ever in today’s workplace. Susan brings you a step-by-step guide to help you develop the tools and resources you need to bring more happiness and satisfaction to your work; in your current job or a new one. Through personal experience, client case studies, research on happiness and motivation, self-assessment tools, and exercises, she shows you how to create a realistic career vision, set goals, and line up the right resources to take control of your career and happiness.

I have an incredibly unique relationship to this book. I started it August 2023, when I was started to be mucho depressed with the direction of my career. In November 2023, I was fired. I found a new one, closer to what I wanted but not perfect, and started in January 2024. In May 2024, I started my own business. Eventually similar patterns repeated themselves, and I let my latest job to work full time on my business in October of this year.

All this to say, reading this book during the most tumultuous time in my career taught me so much about myself and the person I am and want to be. Peppercorn really challenged me (along with my own "Board of Directors") to build the business I want to be in.

I still have so much to learn, but at 31, I'm happier in my career than I've ever been. Finishing this at a reflective time for myself & my business feels perfect. I'm so grateful for the role this book played in my journey.

DITCH YOUR INNER CRITIC explores the widespread work-related disengagement by workers throughout the work force and discusses the cost of that disengagement on the company, on society, and on the worker's general well being. Susan Peppercorn leads the reader through the process of finding a deep level of satisfaction in one's career that is based on one's own image of success and happiness, not someone else's.

She guides the reader to soul search, through the recognition of their inner critic, redefine their strengths and purpose, and examine their values and drives to use those emotions to strategically find a compatible career. It is clear through Peppercorn's many case studies, she has a unique approach to helping clients find job satisfaction. The resources supporting her client work are impressive. I loved the way she empowers her clients to harness their resources to achieve their goals.

I read this almost in one sitting. It's an easy read with many valuable exercises for anyone feeling a bit (or a lot) disillusioned by their career choice. The book is nicely organized such that you can select which exercises are good fits for your situation.
