Frank Gill Slaughter , pen-name Frank G. Slaughter, pseudonym C.V. Terry, was an American novelist and physician whose books sold more than 60 million copies. His novels drew on his own experience as a doctor and his interest in history and the Bible. Through his novels, he often introduced readers to new findings in medical research and new medical technologies.

Slaughter was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Stephen Lucious Slaughter and Sarah "Sallie" Nicholson Gill. When he was about five years old, his family moved to a farm near Berea, North Carolina, which is west of Oxford, North Carolina. He earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College (now Duke University) at 17 and went to medical school at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He began writing fiction in 1935 while a physician at Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.

This Book 'The Crown and the Cross' by Dr. Frank G Slaughter was most promising a read.... However, I must say that although the writer does write well and is also probably well researched in that he gives good background information - the biggest problem is that Dr. Slaughter has NOT represented the Lord Jesus Christ as Who He really is. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God Himself manifested in human form, the Word become flesh to dwell among us, to lay down His Life for us all.
Allow me to quote some of Dr. Slaughter's own words from page 101. This is after the baptism of our Lord. Dr Slaughter writes,
"The voice which had spoken to Jesus as he came from the waters of baptism had named him the Son of God, but being human he could still feel doubt concerning his own worthiness. And as he walked along the road, he was conscious of the need to withdraw from the world, to remove himself like the Essenes from the temptations of the flesh in order to achieve through prayer, fasting, and contemplation a fuller understanding of the purpose of God than he had received that morning." (page 101, 1959 edition, The World Publishing Company).
Clearly, FGS has not truly understood nor has he therefore rightly 'depicted' our Lord. Our Blessed Lord did not ever have any 'doubts' as to His Own worthiness; besides, He Himself did not ever have to 'struggle' against temptations, at least not in the realm of the moral. He did face temptations from the Devil, when the Devil sought to draw Him away from His dependence upon His God and Father - this the Lord resolutely resisted. However, in the moral realm, our Lord was impeccable. In other words, the Lord Jesus Christ could not sin. Not only that He DID NOT sin, HE COULD NOT sin.

I am disappointed that a good writer did not also write the Truth in presenting the Life of our Lord Jesus Christ accurately. The Man Jesus of Nazareth is both God and man at the same time, without the one nature setting aside or interferring with the other. There was perfect balance and harmony between these two natures in the One Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Scriptures (i.e., primarily, the New Testament) make it clear that our Lord knew in Himself Who He was - the Son of God come down from the Father, sent by Him, the Saviour of the World. It is pointless to debate and/or argue or even 'wonder' as to when it was that the Lord 'began to realize' who He really was. No doubt this is a great mystery and there is much the NT does not make plain to us. However, to even suggest that the man Jesus at 'some point of time in his earthly life' became endued with 'special powers' or even with 'divinity' is really a most serious error. The NT is clear that the Lord Jesus Christ knew all along just Who He was - the Son of God.

Keeping the NT revelation in mind, I cannot therefore recommend Dr. Frank G Slaughter's book 'The Crown and the Cross'.

"in the long line of travelers approaching the city of Bethlehem from the south this winter afternoon, none was more certain of his piety and righteousness then Elam, the Pharisee."

I have had this older title for some years now and pulled it out for some inspiration. It was a great adventure featuring many different persons over the life of Christ, some fictional and some actual.

Protestants know neither Jesus Christ, nor His mother, nor any other thing of Christianity.

I have read this book at least five times. Read it for the first time and carried away from page after page. When I had completed the last page I was just filled of heavy breath and it took some time to come out of it. Then I read again and again. but I lost the book. Want to read again. Even now I think about Jonas, what his feeling are, when Jesus touched his Hump. Its a beautiful feelings you will have through out reading till the final page. You walk along with Jesus. Love Frank G Slaughter's books
