Three weeks in Hawaii with his daughter was the plan, but Keanu ‘Skorpion’ Hamari didn’t expect another job with his former handler—or the beautiful complication that came with it.
The Accountant
Good with numbers, Ada Edgar has made a career of keeping the books for the underbelly of society, but when her life is threatened, she’ll have to negotiate with a man no one wants to bargain with—and accept the protection of a ruggedly handsome mercenary intent on making her life miserable.
Welcome to the Den ...
From enemies to lovers and everything in between, they’ll both learn once you’re in the business, there’s no getting out.
Skorpion. features a brand new couple in the Den of Mercenaries series, but to fully enjoy the reading experience, it is best to have read previous books in the series.

At this point, I just want to say bring on the Kingmaker and Belladonna story already! The other characters are suffering because what should be their stories are taking a back seat to whatever chess game those two are playing. Really, I want their story, but not at the cost of everyone else's.
I did not get into this story until I reached the 60% mark. I was super distracted because I just wasn't engaged and I thought about shelving it as a DNF many a times. There was nothing interesting about Keanu - aka Scorpion - and Ada once they got together. Don't get me wrong, they aren't a bad couple but it is as if they were made a couple just because they had to spend time together and provide a story leading up to what I believe is the actual story behind the Den. Problem is, that's a whole other series that I don't see us getting any time soon.
Scorpion was laid-back, loyal and funny. He interacted with the most persons in and outside of the Den since the beginning of this series but there was nothing new than what we already guessed or pieced from his appearances in Calavera and Nix's novels. I still don't have a full understanding of the man and his reason for getting crazy protective of Ada.
Ada was no different. She was a "prisoner" and I use this term loosely, and then she was falling in love and I am looking like, "Where, when, what?" ... When did this happen? Between the time jumps or the full 360 that I refuse to believe was due to a phone call from Luna and a bathing suit. There was NOTHING to account for the turning point in their relationship. Balanced and measured, they got to Hawaii and then time was either running or wasted.
The actual climax of this novel was no better because it felt like any other chapter. There was no passion or spark for you to know that this is THE pivotal point in the novel.
I have never seen Syn's novel listed on Goodreads under this series but I am pleased to know his novel will be out next because this book made me realize that he might just be what this series need. I've never been a chess player but the long game is getting pretty boring. Powering through mediocre scenarios and dialogues is not what I expect when I wait months on a novel.
Belladonna, Uilleam and Syn had more of a story here and I find that when a chapter skipped to give us Syn's POV, I saw no need to go back to Ada and Keanu because nothing was happening with them. For someone on the run with a bounty on her head, she lead quite the relaxed, home maker life and I have no clue what their plans are as a couple going forward because their story ended on a Kingmaker note as always.
I can't say I need a break from this series based on when I read the last novel but I am truly disappointed that this story read as a major distraction and as such, it missed the substance needed for us to connect with the characters, especially because Scorpion has never really ran with the gang but he is such a lethal and precise weapon that it leaves me disappointed that this was all his story amounted to. I definitely wish I learnt more about him and Ada, as much as I learnt about Uilleam and Karina. Cookie cutter and safe is what I would use to describe this story.
After I read this all I could think about was “What was the point of this book?” We are at the same point we were from the last we are not sure what the Kiingmaker do to Belladonna. There seems no resolution in sight.
Skorpion and Ada’s story was anticlimactic. He didn’t like her at first talked to Calavera and then she was in his bed and basically that was the story. I didn’t understand the pressing information Ada had it didn’t do anything to progress the story, almost a non issue. This seemed like a filler story. I was more interested in Syn. He was one of the only parts that was interesting. Let’s cut to the chase and just have the Kingmaker’s story!
Great read, but I have to agree with another person who has reviewed this book, the main characters of the story are taking a back seat to The Kingmaker and Bellodonna. I would have liked to have seen a lot more between Skorpian and Ava, I personally felt these two characters were just put together for the sake of it, I didn’t really feel there connection at all. The chess game is getting long winded and drawn out, especially considering I’ve seen on goodreads The The Kingmaker will have a trilogy all of its own. It’s still worth reading though and I will definitely be following the series, especially if they continue on KU.
That look on my face right now? That's the look of disappointment. I waited with much anticipation for this book to be released, only for it to feel like a filler towards the Kingmaker's own book. I know all the book in this series are supposed to lead to that, but still.
The premise was so interesting: a not so innocent woman finds herself in a dire predicament that put her in the middle of a war between two very powerful people; a man tasked to guarding her against his will; both reluctantly falling in love. All the right ingredients, but mixed with convulated elements, plot holes, rushed parts, confusing moments and uninspiring main characters.
This was disappointing. I was looking forward to Skorpion’s story as he really was a mysterious character but this flatlined. I was so bored and frankly just wanted the Kingmaker, Belladonna and Syn to get more screen time. The last 30% is what saved it as it finally had some movement and action. This could have been combined into another book.
I personally love the Den of Mercenaries series. After reading Red, I had to keep going. With Skorpion being the fifth book this story revolves around Ada Edgar and Keanu Hamari. Keanu has witnessed many tragedies in his life, and he want's to be done doing the Kingmakers bidding. But in order to protect the one thing he values most, he must do what he is told.
His job.... protect and watch Ada Edgar. She has information on the Belladonna and the Kingmaker wants to know everything. She is a valuable asset. And must be protected at all costs.
The chemistry between Skorpion and Ada.... were off the walls! I was licking my lips, London Miller sure knows how to write some smexy scenes.
Skorpion also gives more insight on what happened with Uilleam and Karina. My mind is a jumbled trying to figure out what the Kingmaker did to make the Belladonna so bitter with hatred. This is a game of chess, you have to wicked in order to rule.
Also the scenes with the Jackal..... I reread his scenes... his book is going to gut me. I just know it.
London Miller knows how to write a d**n good book. I have been on pins and needles, and couldn't get enough of this series. Definitely a must read for Mafia Lovers!
This book was good, I just didn't feel the connection I usually get with Londons characters. Kingmaker and Belladonna's story along with Syn's are going to be amazing, I just know it off the sneak peaks in this book. Cannot wait for those!
After reading nix and Calavera-red, celt, and skorpion felt like different books altogether. At some point while reading skorpion-even though I haven’t read syn or iris yet- I wondered if nix and calavera’s stories should have been the last of the series considering there’s a kingmaker trilogy spin off after iris. I do love the authors writing, it wasn’t what I expected at all, but I can’t shake the thought that I’d have rather had all the mercaneries stories first, then nix and Calavera, then leading into the kingmaker. I already don’t wanna read syn and iris because the kingmaker series doesn’t even kick off until the end of summer and I know the cliffhanger or whatever is gonna keep me in a mind fuck all summer lol.
It was a little hard to care about skorpion after reading Calavera. sure he was intriguing, but I was fixiated on the kingmaker-uilleam. After nix and Calavera, My interest was in him and whatever was going on with belladonna. And I think that because of that fact, it distracted me from skorpions story. I think because uilleams background and personality was so much interesting than the other characters. Like don’t get me wrong he’s Self serving and definitely a little demented, but he was brilliant. You can’t serve me books like nix and Calavera, and then give me skorpion. It’s like giving me gold then later on giving me a 20, 😒
Love this series and I can’t have enough of this Mercenaries!! Syn story feels too far away , can’t wait to find out what happens with him and how he’s going to freed himself from what we read in this book.
It's been a while since I've read a London Miller book and all I can think is WHY?!!? This was one heck of a story, which was well written, had a good mix of steam and action, along with plenty of plot twists and intrigue. The only slight negative is that whilst I did care about and feel invested in the characters, I didn't feel a big emotion pull.
Whilst reading this I never got bored or felt tempted to skim parts of the book. There were no What? Why? or Really? moments, the whole story felt believable and had me gripped from start to finish. I was just totally immersed in the book, finding it incredibly easy to read, follow and enjoy.
I actually started out not caring too much for Ada, the heroine. She felt quite a cold, hard nosed character at first. However as the story progresses, we learn more about her and my opinion totally changed. She was a genuine and caring individual who got involved in the shadier side of life as a result of immaturity. Ada was then sucked in deeper whilst trying to take care of her family.
Still waters definitely flowed deep with Skorpion but his relationship with Soliel tells you everything you need to know about the man. The chapters from his POV showed a wonderful and protective male, with a huge heart. He was hard and unforgiving when he had his mercenary head on but a gentle giant when with his loved ones. This dichotomy of character worked perfectly and I totally loved and believed in both him and Ada.
Their relationship moved quickly but since they were together 24/7 that wasn't surprising. After a month or so they had spent a HUGE amount of time together. Soliel, Syn and a few other characters helped to add depth and colour to the story, turning a good story into an amazing one.
This can be easily read as a standalone, you can also read it without having read previous books. However, we do have a plot thread that has been weaving through all the books, this time it focused on Karina/Belladonna. There was also setting up of Syn's story which, because of how much I enjoyed this book, I will definitely be reading.
London has done it again, only this time we see a side of a mercenary that is completely different. Keanu and Ada's story has been told in a different light from the others in The Den and Wild Bunch. I felt their story had more of a softness to it which was needed with Keanu situation. He is a mercenary that must think before acting due to his little miss monster. Being a father is first and for most in his life. Ada has regret and sorrow from the choices she has made. Loving her family but understanding later how important family is only added to her feeling of loss, so falling in love with Keanu made perfect sense. Love and family means so much for them both. Watching them fall in love and learning to trust and forgive ones self has been beautifully written. With each book in the series we see more puzzle pieces falling into place, but yet still have more surprises pop up making you even more curious then before. London brings in some of our favorite Den/Wild Bunch players setting up new twist and plots. I loved that we are given more insight on some main players coming up. And let's face it, the moves being done from The King and Queen is the ultimate chess game leaving us to wonder who really will win. Skorpion is a must read because it shows how love is not always about you or your love interest but how real love has many different layers, challenges and consequences.
I was lucky enough to be given a Arc for a honest review.
3.5 Stars Adored Ada and loved Skorpion. Immediately connected with them both making this a wonderful romance. Review: Skorpion’s sting was a lot milder than I anticipated. There’s no hiding the way he earns his keep but he was off the job more than he was on it, if you get my drift!
Skorpion has been summoned by the Kingmaker to take Ada to a safe house until he is told otherwise. Ada has no misgivings as to her predicament, understanding she is more of a prisoner than a guest. As time progresses the lines become blurred not only for Ada but for Skorpion as well.
Ada is awesome and I connected with her character instantly. She plays her cards close, aiming to stay alive and if fate is on her side, one step ahead of the game. When the tension between Ada and Skorpion drops, the story flows effortlessly. The serenity is blissful and their surprise visitor adds to the happy times. Their little corner of Nirvana is short lived and soon the setting changes to a less idyllic one.
All through the upheavals Ada experiences, she adapts and goes with the flow. And while this is going to sound a bit on the crazy side, I was almost a bit lost with everything going so effortlessly. Have no fear, the drama comes but not to the extent I anticipated.
When the final chapter reveals the latest state of play, my heart sunk with dread as to what would be in store for Sin. With total faith in the Kingmaker’s team of mercenaries, I will head into the next book knowing that if anyone can save him, it would be one of the brothers’ mercenaries.
The way the Den of Mercenaries and Wild Bunch series are intricately woven into each other is impressive. While I enjoyed Ada and Skorpion’s romance, I can’t wait for the return of the spine chilling action I’ve become accustomed to with London Miller’s writing.
I voluntarily accepted an advanced reader copy for my honest review.
This was not what I expected because it was more watching two people fall in love than the action and suspense of the other books. I have to admit, the beginning of the book was very slow for me. I wasn’t really interested in Ada or her story. She didn’t capture me. I was waiting for Skorpion to show up to add some action to the mix. And he didn’t disappoint...he’s got some personality to him. It was a slow dance for them but they fell in love. And it was passionate. And those moments were truly beautiful. But I have to agree with other readers, their story was hugely overshadowed by belladonna and the kingmaker. It’s kind of a shame because I really wanted more from Ada and Skorpion. Wanted more scenes with them to give us the connection. I wanted to know more of Skorpion’s back story. I know it’s all leading to the bigger story in the end. But this slow escalation is like the days leading up to Christmas...we want it now!

Skorpion, book 5 in the Den of Mercenaries series by London Miller. The action and the secrets continues. Not as action filled as some of the other books are. Instead, holding a few answers, which all in all made more questions. The author knows how to keep a reader's interest!
"(Spoiler) blubbered as he was dragged from the room, tears falling even as Syn whistled. Keanu sat back with a sigh, only letting the tension inside him ease once the screams started."
The author has a way with her writing which keeps your attentions for a long time, forgetting the real world.
"Because sometimes, truths were as poisonous as any lie."

I absolutely love this series and this book did not disappoint. I completely fell in love with both Ada and Skorpion. You could feel their pull to each other straight away and I just anticipating for when it would finally come to a head and explode. And boy did it explode. They had so much passion between them that it was just jumping off the pages. Even though a lot of this book was based with them in hiding you still got a feel of the danger that was always just around the corner and it just kept me exciting and wanting to turn the pages!
This book was great and worth every second of the wait! I couldn’t put it down and loved every second of it. Skorpion was always an elusive character so it was great getting to know him and learning about his life! London Miller definitely did an amazing job per usual.
If you haven’t bought it yet you’re missing out!!
Also I absolutely loved the teaser about Syn! I absolutely can’t wait to read his book, I have no doubt it’ll be one of the best!
This was a great add in to The Den series. London has an amazing ability to match the leads. She is able to create flaws in every character but makes a counter part that fills those flaws every way. Although this story does not have the action that is usually found in London’s stories it is obvious that she is gearing up for something huge in the rest of the series. I am and always will be a huge fan of this writer. Bravo 👏🏻
I am having trouble rating this book. I never felt a connection between the main characters. After finishing the book I still don't feel like I know either one very well. It was more like the secondary characters had more going on. It almost felt like this book should have been a novella. I also started getting bored with the plot. I caught myself putting my kindle down more than I wanted to pick it up. I will still continue with the series, I was just disappointed.
I was very disappointed with this book. I love London's work but I think she dropped the ball. It felt very rushed and there was hardly any dialogue between the characters before she told us they were in love. There were many typos as well. It seemed like she rushed to meet a deadline and didn't care about the final product
Keanu Hamari (Skorpion) has been called in by Ulleam (Kingmaker) for a favor due. Protect Ada Edgar from a hit on her life. Even though he has retired from The Den for good to raise his daughter, Soleil, Skorpion takes on the job.
Four **** rating and I definitely recommend these 📚.
This was a book that was written to bridge the storyline. Nothing more. I was expecting a bigger story with Skorpion given that he has a daughter and how he gets to deal especially when he's working. It came out dull. And Ada's character was also lacking. I hope Syn's book will live up to his name.
Sweet Jesus. Each time I think I'm figuring this story out this author changes it up. This is a master class of a chess game and EVERYONE is a Pawn. Even the Kingmaker himself. I love that each story is about specific set of characters but that everyone from the past still plays a pivotal role in this game. I can't wait to see what happens next.
After reading book 1, a million years ago I skipped some in between and went for Scorpio. Because obviously, Scorpios are the best. The beginning was very interesting but then I kind of lost interest in our main couple. Especially when they got together they became a side story and Belladonna and Kingmaster got so much more focus. I don't think I will read other books in the series.
Your always the same. Thank goodness, because you never disappoint. I enjoy the way a lot of your books intermingled. It keeps the end game continuing. I can only hope you figure out a way to continue, I would truly miss all of the characters.
3.5. I like the romance, I just wanted more of it, especially towards the end. I am not the biggest fan of multiple POVs, and at times Syn's just felt out of place. I understand it is setting up the next story, but it still felt distracting at times.
