I was ready to give this a pass but after finishing it, it convinced me that this is the best volume without Musashi yet. My initial misgiving was that the ending of the epic duel of Kojiro and the younger Yoshioka was already spoiled. I knew Denshiro was going to survive with his limbs and Kojiro has yet a role to play, but the way it unfolded was truly awesome. It was an example of what I wanted from a samurai manga. As usual, Vagabond did not disappoint but surpassed all expectations.

Absolutely incredible.
The Sasaki Kojiro arc is killing me and giving me life at the same time. Jisai is best dad of the series, hands down.

Some cliffhanger! Two boastful braggarts meet, and we already know that one of them can back it up. But what of this spear fellow?

Some nice fights too.

Kojiro set out on the warrior’s pilgrimage to become stronger with his master Itosai. I think someday he may fight with Musashi.

Much relieved , this was filled with action and the story finally progressed . For a long time it felt like we were stuck with the Kojiro story and it simply wasn't going anywhere. I wasnt even a fan of the whole Kojiro arc . Still , i see the relevant, i am glad its done and we are ready to move on .

I love what Inoue has done for Kojiro's character before his inevitable fight with Mushashi. I am starting to miss the latter though, hopefully soon we will get back to him.

7.5/10 Kojiro takes on Denshichiro Yoshioka head to head but little did Denshichiro know, Kojiro was deaf but talented with a sword. He had the upper hand and caused Kojiro to experience fear in a fight for the first time, but that only made him more determined. Kojiro has a disadvantage because he has a short sword and is used to fighting with a wooden stick, but some how he still stays toe to toe with Denshichiro and is smiling because he enjoys fighting. They end the fight by both brutally slicing each other up to near death and blacking out. Denshichiro speaks about this fight like he reconnected with an old friend and they had a “great discussion and both loved the way of the sword”. After healing up, Kojiro goes with Yagoro (master Jisai’s other desciple) to continue his journey and move on from his life with Jisai. Jisai was afraid he created a monster but really Kojiro was always this way but couldn’t fulfill his potential. Kojiros friend Kusanagi Tenki, formely kamekichi, was entrusted by master Jisai to deliver a certificate of swordsmanship to Kojiro. All the while, Kojiro is going around taking on swordsman and creating a name for himself.

Damn it, I love Kojiro. Such a fascinating dude to read about, I get why he can be a 'rival' to Musashi. Watching him have such skill but be so unused to actual duels/fighting to the death, and slowly discover that over the course of the duel, is great. Densichiro is also fleshed out here in a major way that makes his previous appearance feel a lot stronger in my mind.
