Nicholas Cox is determined to prove himself in the world of competitive fencing, and earn his place on the Kings Row fencing team, alongside sullen fencing prodigy, Seiji Katayama, to win the right to go up against his golden-boy half-brother.

Tryouts are well underway at King’s Row for a spot on the prodigious fencing team, and scrappy fencer Nicholas isn’t sure he’s going to make the grade in the face of surly upperclassmen, nearly impossibly odds, and his seemingly unstoppable roommate, the surly, sullen Seiji Katayama. It’ll take more than sheer determination to overcome a challenge this big!

From the superstar team of C.S. Pacat (The Captive Prince) and fan-favorite artist Johanna the Mad comes the second volume of this acclaimed, dynamic series.

"My name's Nicholas Cox...and I'm going to make you remember it."

description

I enjoyed this way more than the first one (if that's even possible). It took me longer to decide on whether I should give this 4 or 5 stars, than it did for me to actually finish reading the issue.
#sorrynotsorry (and just like last time, I find myself inching towards 4 only because of the length)

I loved how much more this issue packed in. We got to be introduced to more bois™ and there was so many laugh out loud moments! I can see the electricity between a couple couples and I AM ON BOARD THE MOTHERFUCKING SHIP!

These group of kids are going to be the death of me and I can already feel myself breaking inside because at the moment there are only 5 issues set to be published.
We get around 22 pages every month:
Let me do the math for you.
That's 110 pages of these ragtag group of boys to shatter my heart in every way possible.

A Compilation of Thoughts

- I am so here for Harvard and Aiden. Just look at their character sheets. Find me a better childhood romance situation. I'll wait.
- Upon personal observation, I have realized that Nicholas has mistaken the pillow for Seiji.
description
- Everyone needs a Bobby in their life.
- Especially Dante.
- The fact that there are so many ships and stans in this series. My fangirly heart is not meant for such bittersweet torture. Give me more. I want all of it.

Ohh Seji’s and Nicholas’ competitive spirit gives me life!! XD

And woah that were a lot of new character introductions!
My head is spinning!
I think it might take a while until I can allocate them all.

I definitely liked Bobby the most though. He is amazing!!! =))
Also is it just me or is it truly possible that Aiden is likely to dump everyone? *lol* He looks like the typical charmer! ;-P

Anyway, I am so ready to dive deeper into this world!

Give me the next one!!! XD

P.S: I'm convinced Bobby's vision of Seji will become Nicholas' vision too. Well at least at some point. *lol* ;-)

A new school, a tough competition, a scholarship depending on making the fencing team...it might sound stressful, but Nicholas the overconfident, unstoppable cinnamon bun is undaunted—it’ll be super easy peasy, you just wait.

Sure. Except for the insufferable douchebag of a roommate you’ve vowed to defeat and put in his place even though you’ve barely had one tenth of his training...

...and how you’re a cute lil angry obsessive mess with a secret crush in a childish, petty rivalry...

No? Then how about the bullies and cutthroat competitors reaching for a spot on the team you need to win to even have a chance to fence because your life is a tragedy and you have nothing and no one?

But nope, Nicholas is determined, and that’s so utterly admirable. Because in this cruel world, when you’re dealt a bad hand all you can do is refuse to give up—or else you’ll be trampled beneath the feet of the privileged.

I gotta say, I hate Seiji a little less because, despite being a bastard, he’s got his own hidden weaknesses and Nicholas is getting under his skin yessss. I can’t wait to see how Bobby’s vision of Seiji will become Nicholas’s, too, though it’ll need to be a very convincing transition because all I wanna do to Seiji right now is pummel him. *grins*

To wrap it up in a nice little bundle: the writing was just as fab as the previous issue while the humour was even better and had me choking and rolling and clapping at its genius, and oh the queerness is making my rainbow heart sing (blame my baby Bobby the overenthusiastic cheerleader).

Everyone get ready because tensions are building in this small school aiming to win against the giants of fencing, and somewhere in this room are the boys who are going to do that. You just ask yourself—

While the first issue was all about introducing the main character, Nicholas, and setting up the rivalry with Seiji, this second issue felt more like a full dive into the world we're going to be part of for the rest of the comic. I felt like this kind of pacing was perfect for me, because once I get to know the main character and what he stands to lose or gain by achieving his dreams, I am ready to be given more information and I enjoy looking at the tiny but significant details that this comic offers.

And there is really a lot that this issue told us, directly or not. Let me go on a little tangent and say that after this I am truly, 100% convinced that Pacat's style is absolutely perfect for the comic format. The uniqueness of her writing style in novel format has always been the ability of conveying information in indirect ways, and letting the reader do the math to come up with their own conclusion. This was especially true in Captive Prince, which of course it's told in a novel format, but it's plain that the same is happening in Fence, and I couldn't be more pleased.

*some minor spoilers, don't read if you want to go in blind*

In #1 we found out that Nicholas and Seiji will be roommates at Kings Row, and in #2 we see how they handle it. Which is: not well. The first part is so funny I literally almost choked on the tea I was drinking lol?? Anyway, we also see how eager and excited Nicholas is to finally be at a proper fencing school, even though Kings Row is far from being an excellence.

description

Just like that, you don't only care about Nicholas's personal journey, but you also care about the school in itself and you want the fencing team to do well. After all, what's a good ol' sports comic if you don't root for the underdog?

description

A lot of characters were introduced and I love every single one of them. We have Harvard, the team captain, Bobby who is simply too cute to be real (yes I know he's not real, chill), Eugene the jock, Aiden who is too goddamn handsome for his own good (and for Harvard's), along with the three Bons (lol) and coach Williams (I love her so much, she's so sly lmao).

Something perhaps more important we get to see here in terms of representation is how casually non-heteronormative the setting of this comic is. There's no fragile masculinity, no batting an eye if a guy is wearing his hair in a bow and his uniform involves a skirt, and casual flirting and complimenting between schoolmates.

*RANDOM SPOILERS OF THINGS I LOVED FROM HERE ON*

- Seiji claiming he doesn't know Nicholas shrglrshlhs I knew he would and I hate him

- Harvard is such a sly asshole I love him

- "I AM NOT SOME FENCER. MY NAME IS NICHOLAS COX AND I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU REMEMBER IT"

- that height difference tho

description

- "the captain shows no remorse" oh Harvard

- THE LINE BETWEEN THE BEDS LMAO THEY'RE SO DAMN CHILDISH

- Nicholas put some clothes on you're gonna kill Seiji

- THE. DUCK. SHOWER. CURTAIN.

- Seiji's PJs

- This:

description

- "no shower curtain" gslkghldhgdfh

- EUGENE IS A JERK

- BOBBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- I WOULD THROW MYSELF OFF A CLIFF FOR BOBBY!!!!!!!

- BOBBY'S CRUSH ON SEIJI I CAN'T HE'S TOO CUTE

- NICHOLAS BEING SUCH A SMOOTH FLIRTER??? everyone is gonna fall in love with him within a week

- Tanner and Kally are the established couple we deserve

- I KNEW IT WAS JESSE WHO BEAT SEIJI FGDHHLDH

- Jesse Coste looks so good y'all

- Coach Williams' wall of things not to say is THE BEST THING

- "Aiden dumped me"

- Aiden himself holy shit

- The three Bons lol

- Robert Coste went to KR??????????

- THE EXTON TEAM LOOKS SO GOOD OMFG

- I wanna meet the twins

- okay but I care so much about all of them so can we like, idk, change the rules of fencing so that everyone can make the team????????? thx

I think I’ll probably get around to writing a longer, proper review of this comic series on my blog after the next issue comes out, because for now my mind is basically just:

excited

sooooo this review comes to you in the form of a quick (semi-spoilery) list!

Reasons Why I Love This Comic, brought to you by emma:

▪️ seiji and nicholas are already being so petty and I love it
▪️ ICYMI this features BOTH the roommates and enemies to lovers trope
▪️ “I’m going to make you remember it” dsjjkasdfff
▪️ that fucking duck shower curtain
▪️ the fact that seiji has to sleep completely tucked in and nicholas is predictably a mess
▪️ coach williams is already such a badass, I love her!
▪️ all of the characters introduced so far are 👌👌👌
▪️ but also I’m ready to throw hands at these people who messed with nicholas
▪️ BOBBY THO *heart eyes*
▪️ the “bobby vision vs. nicholas vision” part made me cACKLE
▪️ “aiden dumped me”
▪️ I wish my eyeliner looked as good as aiden’s tbh
▪️ there can only be THREE on the team oh my god I’m not ready for this drama
▪️ overall I just love the casual queer rep!!!
▪️ heteronormativity and gender norms?? don’t know them
▪️ there are no coming out scenes, no scenes of characters worrying about people reacting negatively to the way they dress or who they’re crushing on
▪️ it’s just,,, THERE and it’s so simple and nice

ANYWAY the next issue comes out on my birthday?? what did I do to deserve this gift????

Well, what more can I say that others haven’t? 😁 No.1 – It’s C.S. Pacat, No.2 – It’s C.S. Pacat. Really, the second one is even better than the first one. 😍 I really hope it won’t stop with only 5 issues as they first planned. 😌

The tension between Seiji and Nicholas is dynamic and interesting. 💜 Is that tension just rivaliry or sexual? We still don’t know but I seriously hope the latter is the case. 😂👏 Also, many interesting and new characters in this issue, especially Aiden. Oooooo .. I’m a sucker for playboys! 😘 And the Nicholas’ half-brother? 😱 You don’t need to be a genius to tell it’s Pacat’s touch. 👍 Can’t wait for the third issue. Pre-ordered and waiting. 😍❤️😘

"He calls this a third rate team, but the truth is... I've never fenced anywhere like this. I cant go back. I have to make the team.

How fun is this!

I'm seriously falling in love with these comics. They're just so charming and sassy that I can't get enough of them.

We're finally introduce to the fencing team and, most probabibly, our rag-tag group of protagonists. They're very different from each other, which makes it easier to remember them, aside for their great passion for fencing.

I get so many vibes of The Foxhole Court my heart just can't take it. All the arc of the team not being very good but still wanting to defeat the best-of-the-best team and the members of said group being very passionate about it is a trope I'm starting to love.

"I am not some fencer. My name's Nicholas Cox. And I'm going to make you remember it.
It would be weird not to remember the name of your roomate.

The humor though. Brilliant.

That whole scene of them dividing the room in two with a-freaking-painted-black-line... I just can't. It's so childish! And I love it for it.

And just the sass and attitude is hillarious to me.

Yet it still balances excelently with the other undertones that it has like revenge and rising above what everyone else says you can. All of it just mixes deliciously.

I'm just having the best time reading while it.

"Wow. This level of bullying is almost cute compared with my old school."

No, I have not forgotten about continuing these comics, I just took a tiny break.

Anyway, I need to know who is the accursed roommate. The intrigue is killing me. And, of course, seeing the progress of Nicholas while he strives to achieve his dream.

Who knew fencing could be this fun?

okay, i'm officially in love.

the first one had me a little taken aback, mostly because of how short these are. i had a hard time connecting to the characters and getting excited for the story. but i'm happy to report that this installment has got me HYPED.

we get an introduction into a little bit of fencing history (as is relevant to the story), a hint at roommate angst (the illustrations on these pages are so lovely, the dichotomy of the two main characters is awesome), and KICK ASS intros to the team. i'm really excited to see the team dynamic in the future... that's really what i live for in sports heavy books/comics (i.e. check, please! and the the foxhole court).

anyway: read this, die happy, etc etc.

This second installment sees Nicholas and Seiji roomed together at their new school, much to their great displeasure.

We also get to meet all the other boys who are trying out for the school's fencing team, which only holds three main spots for the best fencers, causing lots of tension and competitive banter among the group.

Once again, I love the artwork, and I especially enjoy the brand of humour that is laced throughout this story.

On to the next one...

It’s getting more interesting! And while Fence #1 felt more like an introduction (well, it was an introduction XD), in #2 I felt more like arriving and being part of it. How satisfying.

I’m glad to slowly meet all the characters! Harvard is truly a hell of a captain, Bobby is so awesome and cute (I think he’s my fav for now), Aiden is just Aiden (♡) and Eugene surprised me the most! I know it was some kind of bullying but I would say bullying in light version and it’s not like Nicholas can’t handle it (in fact, he handled it pretty professionally!), plus, isn’t this kind of typical for competitive boys to test out their limits? //shrugs I don’t know but I don’t blame Eugene.

Finally, THERE WAS ONE ENTIRE PANEL OF THE EXTON TEAM!! Woohooooo!! Jesse looked sooooo handsome and superior! That expression, he truly got it from his father! :3 Also, there were the Leventis twins! I feel sooooo blessed! They both look so handsome too, with their curly hair!!~ And Johanna did a good job on drawing them because of how she depicts their different personalities in this one panel.

This was so wonderful and too short. As always...

Reminder: Never ever say ‘Aiden bumped me’! //laughs endlessly

This book starts off exactly like I expected, with Nicholas’s disbelief that his nemesis who was supposed to be at the rival school is now his roommate and Seiji even refusing to recognize Nick. We also get introduced to a lot of other fencers, all of whom are now going to compete with each other to make it to the team.

Coach Williams seems like a formidable woman and I have a feeling that none of the bullying tactics of some players are gonna work around her. Bobby is the cutest guy with heart eyes for Seiji and I’m very excited to see how good a fencer he is. Nick is feeling a little intimidated because he is not used to the wonderful training facilities but his confidence is his major asset. Aiden seems like a charmer and I’m hopeful he’ll show up in the next book.

The artwork is on point and I really liked a few characters. The panels with Bobby’s imagination are especially lovely and Nicholas looks very dapper in his school uniform. He is also being slightly flirty towards Bobby and I’m totally digging it. The banter between Nick and Seiji is so much fun to read about and now that the competition is heating up, I can’t wait to read what all of them will do to outmaneuver each other.
