Bitter Truth by C.J. Carmichael is the second book in the Bitter Root Mysteries series. Each book in the series is centered around a new mystery so they could be understood if reading as a standalone however there is character development carried over from the first book.
In this installment of the series the citizens of Lost Trails, Montana are all mourning the loss of ninety one year old Lacy Stillman when she is found in her home presumably having suffered a heart attack. As details come about and the debate over Lacy’s wealth begins Zak Waller begins to question whether the death really was natural causes or not seeing that Lacy had just had her check up and a clean bill of health.
While things heat up with Lacy’s death Tiff Masterson is going through a lot with her mother and aunt. Having returned to Lost Trails recently she begins to question her mother’s mental health but her aunt will hear nothing of the sort. It’s assumed Tiff’s father and brother passing years before are the cause but Tiff finds herself in for a huge surprise when old family secrets become uncovered.
Again I found myself amazed at what C.J. Carmichael can accomplish with a story in such a short time. These books aren’t incredibly long but so much gets packed into each story and never once do I feel like the details are forgotten or the mystery is too rushed. Everything in the book is woven together wonderfully to keep a reader guessing through each turn of the page and the characters have more depth to them than some 500+ page reads. After finishing this installment I’ll definitely be interested in the next book in this series for sure.

Small town secrets come to the forefront in this fascinating second book of the Bitter Root mysteries.
Lacy Stillman, a 91-year-old rancher woman has been found dead in her bed by one of her sons. Evidently she died of a heart attack even though a doctor's visit the day before pronounced her as very healthy. She has been the town's leading citizen and the whole town is in mourning.
Zak Waller, the police dispatcher who should be a deputy, has some information that may shed a different light on Lucy's death.

The characters are fascinating. I love how a small community can come together ... to either hide secrets or reveal them. The family dynamics are guaranteed to keep the reader turning pages. There's a wealth of town residents that bear watching. It's fairly fast-paced and every page is a twist, a turn, a surprise.
There's no cliff hanger, but a hint of what is to come next. This is definitely an enjoyable mystery.

LET ME FIGURE OUT WHAT I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT C.J. Carmichael's "Bitter Truth". Hummm...? Well not anything to mention here. NOW WHAT DID I LIKE ABOUT THIS MYSTERY? It was a stand-alone which was good since I had not read Bitter Root#1. The characters were amazing and interesting even the murder victim Lacy who died at the beginning of the book. There was family drama times three to keep the pages turning. Budding romances that were just that; not yet blooming but being pollinated. Past events never really going away but getting the dusty attic box opened to the light. Has the cat, the dog, adorable preschool girls and hay rides. Great holiday novel that takes place from Thanksgiving through the end of the year in a small community. Had a wealth of town folks to keep track of but as the mystery progressed everyone had their place and key roll to play. Did not end on a cliff hanger but did leave some crumbs to follow into the next book. "A copy of this book was provided by Tule Publishing via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion." This is a great narrative not to miss.

After meeting the main characters and the Bitter Root community along with a twisting murder mystery, I was primed and ready to keep going with the series and enjoy further developments in the lives, loves, secrets, and yes, another murder in small town Montana.
Bitter Truth is book two of the Bitter Root series. A reader could pick it up out of order, but it reads best after the first book because of the ongoing personal and romantic story lines introduced in Bitter Roots.
The story begins with the death of Lacy Stillman, a large ranch owner in the community. The Stillmans are shook by Lacy's surprising will and how it complicates matters. Their lawyer, Justin Pittman, is undergoing his own crisis after his wife deserted him and his newly adopted daughter right when he learns his cancer is back. Tiff is still feeling unsettled about coming home and where things stand with her new love interest when her aunt starts acting strange and her mother's mental health deteriorates. Meanwhile, Zach is not convinced Lacy's death was an accident. Little things don't add up and the sheriff isn't planning to pursue them so he is forced to play amateur detective once again while also trying to figure out what happened to cause Nadine to back away when he thought they were finally getting a chance.
So, the author has written a full plot with three different narrators and their separate storylines that cross paths and occasionally come together. Because of this, like the first book, it can take a while for the plot to move forward at times. I was ready for the strong character driven gentle pacing and enjoy how it is a bit of everything as a result- fiction, romance, and suspense.
This is the story of a town because of all the storylines and characters and I enjoy that. It is also the story of the three people around the same age dealing with personal issues, family, and love. Tiff has to figure out where she belongs and if she is ready to try out a relationship again after the last disaster. Zach needs to work through letting his past dictate his future which means not hiding behind the dispatcher desk and maybe try for a deputy job that suits him better and also work harder at what he has with Nadine. Justin's story breaks my heart a little. He just wanted a family of his own and a child. His wife loves someone else and wants to jetset around the world with the guy so came back to marry then leave him, but at least he has a child. He fought cancer alone the first time to protect his dad from worry, but now it came back and worse so he has to tell his dad and his daughter while worrying what will happen if a stem cell donor can't be found. He's also found a nice woman and her daughter who he enjoys being around, but he's still married and has no guarantees beyond a year left.
Now, the mystery turns out to be not so straight forward because it turns out there are three mysteries. Tiff is confused by what is going on with her aunt and what she is hiding while Zach is working at a death that he feels was a murder, but has no actual proof yet. And, then a woman goes missing. The twists and suspense were great when they built to the surprise ending. Well, I worked out the big shockers based on a few curious points earlier in the book, but I still had a great time seeing that I was right and how that all fell out.
So, this second book in the series was fabulous if a bit slow to get rolling at first. Those who want a cozy mystery paired with a romantic suspense should definitely check out this series.

I'm really enjoying this series.
It could be a stand alone, but I don't recommend it.
In this one, there are some twists and turns. Zak the dispatcher is great.
The romance is miniscule, but safe. No OW/OM, no cheating, and it's kisses only.
No cursing.

There are a lot of secrets in the town of Lost Trails, Montana. But when Lacy Stillman is discovered dead in her bed, Zak Waller, dispatcher for the local Sheriff’s Office, doesn’t believe Lacy died from natural causes like everyone is being told. He sets out to discover the truth and finds a lot more than he expected.
Zak’s friend Tiff Masterson has returned to Lost Trails after a breakup with her boyfriend. She is back living at home and helping her aunt take care of her mother. But it seems someone is trying to force Tiff to leave town again. A family secret is also revealed which surprises everyone in town.
I was fully engaged in this story as soon as I started reading it. There were a lot of twists and turns that took me by surprise. Even though this book can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend reading Bitter Roots first. It will give you more of a background on all of the characters. If you enjoy a good mystery, I would recommend this book.

Lacy an elderly rancher has died in her bed starting a huge family feud. The dispatcher,Zak, thinks there may be more to it. Zak’s friend Tiff is overwhelmed by her mother’s mental problems and her aunt’s denial of it. Tiff thinks it is because of her father and brother’s death but the real problem started years before. There is a good twist at the end that solves the problem and answers the questions.

Bitter Truth by C.J. Carmichael, book two of the Bitter Roots Mysteries series. I really enjoyed this story. It had me thinking of what was happening the whole time I was reading it. Really pulled me in with the great characters from the previous book and the storyline. I can't wait to see what is up next in this series.

This one had a puzzling mystery. There was more development of our main characters, Zak Waller, Tiff Masterson, Justin and Geneva. But I could use more development of them. Nadine is sort of just there, why does Zak like her, other than she's attractive? I don't know if I can get more in the series from the library. We will see.

An awesome read full of secrets and lies that the bitter truth will come out in the end. Not what you expect in a little town of Lost Trails, Montana, when they find the town matriarch, Lacy Stillman dead in her bed from a presumed heart attack. Zach, the town dispatcher for the local sheriff office wonders if there is more to the death of Lacy.
Tiff, has returned home to help with the care of her mother with her aunt but soon family secrets to come out , as someone is forcing Tiff to leave town.
A great cast of characters that I was fully engaged with. Lots of family drama. Plus , I'm rooting for a few budding romances that are developing. This is the second book in the series, that can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend that you read the first book too.

An exciting mystery
This is book 2 in the Bitter Root Mystery series and it is an excellent, exciting, twisted read. I read this book in one day because I couldn't out it down. Tiff and her childhood friend Zak know that there are some deep secrets in Lost Trails, Montana. When a rich, elderly rancher does suddenly of an apparent heart attack after having been given a clean bill of health, Zak begins to suspect foul play. As the police dispatcher he has access to a lot of records and he knows a lot of people. He begins a subtle investigation and he consults his best friend Tiff. At the same time Tiff is struggling to find her way back home on the Christmas Tree Farm and struggling with her mother's obvious deteriorating mental health. Tiff believes her mom still can't come to terms with her brother's death and then the sudden tragic death of her father as well. Her mother has been relying on her sister for so many years and Tiff doesn't understand why suddenly her usually living aunt seems desperate for Tiff to leave and go back to Seattle. This is book 2 in the Bitter Root Mystery series and it is an excellent, exciting, twisted read. I read this book in one day because I couldn't out it down. Tiff and her childhood friend Zak know that there are some deep secrets in Lost Trails, Montana. When a rich, elderly rancher does suddenly of an apparent heart attack after having been given a clean bill of health, Zak begins to suspect foul play. As the police dispatcher he has access to a lot of records and he knows a lot of people. He begins a subtle investigation and he consults his best friend Tiff. At the same time Tiff is struggling to find her way back home on the Christmas Tree Farm and struggling with her mother's obvious deteriorating mental health. Tiff believes her mom still can't come to terms with her brother's death and then the sudden tragic death of her father as well. Her mother has been relying on her sister for so many years and Tiff doesn't understand why suddenly her usually living aunt seems desperate for Tiff to leave and go back to Seattle. Suddenly things change for the worse and old secrets come forward to threaten the lives of Tiff and her mother. I was intrigued and held in suspense while reading Biter Truth by CJ Carmichael, the second book in her Bitter Roots Mysteries series. Zak Waller, the dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Office of Lost Trail, Montana as he mourns the death of Lacy Stillman, a wealthy and elderly rancher. Zak hears some disturbing information which makes him question if Lacy’s death by heart attack was really as it seemed. At the same time, Zak’s friend Tiff Masterson becomes very concerned about her mother’s health as it spirals downward along. Complicating this is her aunt’s continual denial that a problem even exists and blames Tiff’s return home to be troubling to her mother. When Justin Pittman’s cancer returns he worries about his father and daughter. After a donor match drive takes place, he unexpectedly and unknowingly adds on to Tiff’s burden. When an old crime is uncovered with far reaching complications exposes an unexpected connection between the Mastersons and the Pittmans ends up affecting everything. I love how CJ Carmichael kept me on my toes, guessing and wondering what would happen next throughout this story.
I really, really enjoyed reading this moving story. Ms. Carmichael is an outstanding storyteller, keeping me interested in this story so that I had trouble putting it down. I highly recommend this outstanding book to other readers and look forward to the next book in the series.

While I do acknowledge that this book is better written and structured than the first one, I can't help but wish it didn't throw so many twists and turns at us.
Sure, small towns are rarely as simple as they seem, and people harbor family secrets. But goodness, this book takes complexity to a whole new level. The amount of intrigue and hidden secrets is astonishing.
So much unfolds in this story. I know Doctor Pittman seems to have evaded justice, but I can't help but think his respite won't last. I'm not buying his version of Aunt Marsha being a master manipulator and him being at her mercy’s end.
Then there's the whole tangled web of love affairs involving Lacy, Jack, and the school principal. It’s a lot to take in, just like Justin’s current situation. I genuinely hope he manages to overcome it.
I’m genuinely excited about the next book. I can’t wait to see Zak, maybe as a deputy at the very least. I know many people encourage him to aim for sheriff, but I'm not sure how realistic that is. He might face resistance from the old-timers in the police department. Well, except for Nadine, as it's clear Deputy Black has a soft spot for him. I’m eager to see where their relationship goes in the next book and whether they’ll decide to take the plunge and move in together. Maybe then I’ll finally enjoy a bit of romance in this book, as I’m definitely not a Tiff and Kenny shipper.

“Bitter Truth” by CJ Carmichael is book two of the Bitter Root Mystery Series. After completing this mystery novel I would say it is not necessary to read “Bitter Roots” first. This is a complete and wonderful story and works well as a stand alone book. Although now I can't wait to go back and read “Bitter Roots”. I have seen the name “CJ Carmichael” time after time and wondered what the fuss was all about. Now I know. I am so glad that I veered away from my normal reading and chose this book. I am not normally a big Mystery fan. I usually find them too intense and can't sleep after reading them. For me C.J. Carmichael writes a perfect book. I was pulled into the story right from the get go. Her characters were like able for the most part. She included one of two that you just love to hate, adding to the story. The ranching community of Lost Trails, Montana was very interesting. There was so much going on for a small town. The author does not end on a cliffhanger. She leaves just enough suspense that you will want to read the next book to learn more about these interesting people and their budding love affairs. I would recommend this book and can not wait to read more by C.J. Carmichael. I really loved Bitter Truth, the second in CJ Carmichael’s Bitter Root Mystery series. The story is set in the small town of Lost Trail and is probably best read as part of the series though there is enough backstory fed into this book to make it work as a stand-alone story too.
Amateur sleuth Zac, despatcher at the sheriff’s office is actually much better at investigating than the sheriff. With a nose for things that just don’t quite add up, Zac embarks on a laborious process of digging up little clues and building a case. I like him. He’s one of a handful of characters central to both the town and the story and I love the way that he gently sucks you into his investigation so that all of a sudden you find yourself utterly engrossed and compelled to see if the hunch you’ve developed yourself is the correct one.
The plot starts off with an almost gentle pace as neighbours gather to mourn the loss of one of their town stalwarts, but the twists and turns in this story don’t take long to start appearing. Along the way there are enough little red herrings thrown in to make the reader wonder if there really was a murder, and if so whether it was this person or that. Even when it became clear to me who was guilty the reason why kept me reading on to the end.

I have read C.J. Carmichael’s romance stories, enjoying each and every one. However, I had not read any of this series of mysteries. Bitter Truth stood well on its own without me having read the first book, Bitter Roots. Now I want to read it, of course. The Lost Trail community in Montana is like most small-towns there is the good, the bad and the hidden evil. I enjoyed reading the story immensely, trying to find the missing pieces along with Zak Waller.
The plot just flows bringing the reader into the story so that I was trying to figure it all out along with Zak Waller. I especially liked this character, one that is in a position that is often overlooked; usually only a supporting character. Several other important characters in this story that switches between subplots but nicely all tied together in the end. This is a mystery with a hint of romance, but I was surprised, not unhappily but surprised nonetheless as to how it all played out.

Bitter Truth is the second in the Bitter Root Mysteries. In this novel, Zak Waller is on the case again. Even though he is not a deputy and is the dispatcher, Zak has intuitive detective skills and deep insight into finding the truth to crimes, often brushed off by the lazy Sheriff. Bitter Truth has two mysteries running parallel and crossing each other at several turns. At the core is the death of Lacy Stillman, matriarch to the Stillman family and very much involved at ninety in the family ranch. Her death comes at a time when her sons have asked her to sell off some property and she has given a definite no to the prospect. Threaded through this story is the health problems of Justin Pittman and his need for a bone marrow donor for his Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and the person of Cora Christensen, former teacher/ruler of the

It's been many a year since I have read a true mystery and this is a true mystery written by an author that I have read her romance books. WOW she blew my mind away with this book. I did not know what to think when I started reading this and yes this is the second book in a series (you bet your bootie I have already picked up book 1 Bitter Roots...little bit backwards) but once I got into it I simply could not stop reading. I have no idea what Montana does to me but it seems to draw me in and grab me. This town is Lost Trails and it does have some people that have some backwoods thinking. Kind of like some i know from home in Tennessee. This is a well written story that had me in in from the start. I could see with my minds out the lay of the land, the ranch, the sheriff and dispatcher Zak.I am headed to read the first book in this series before the third book comes out. Because it will be time for a complete re-read of the first 2...of course. So if you like a good, well written mystery with a touch of heat this is the book for you.

Bitter Truth is an engaging and entertaining read. For me, this book is not about the mystery as much as the interesting characters who solve the mysteries and populate the town. The mystery in this book was good, but the character development is even better.
Zak, our lead detective, is not really a detective. He is a police dispatcher in the Lost Trail police department. Zak is not interested in being in charge or even being a deputy, he is just interested in seeing that justice is served and that his small town stays safe. He doesn't solve crime because he is seeking glory, he solves it because someone needs to, and he is good at it.
The secondary characters are really well written as well and I feel like there is a lot of material there for more books in this great series.
I recommend this series highly to anyone who enjoys well crafted books with mysteries.

What a great mystery series! I really enjoyed Bitter Roots (book 1) and Bitter Truth (book 2) did not disappoint. Bitter Truth picks up where the first book left off--in Lost Trails, Montana. We get updates on the lives of Zak Waller and his coworkers at the sheriff's office, Tiff Masterson and her mother and aunt, Kenny at Raven Christmas Tree Farm, and Justin Pittman and his health, his daughter and father. In this installment, 91 year old Lacy Stillman is found dead in her own bed. She was the richest woman around and had two sons and three grandchildren. Since Zak saw Lacy after a great doctor's checkup the day before, he suspects something fishy happened. So he does a little snooping off the record. This book just flows! There are many secrets uncovered and not everyone is what he/she seems to be! I can't wait to read Bitter End!

Bitter Truth, the 2nd in Bitter Root Mysteries, C.J. Carmichael's, is an excellent traditional mystery/police procedure. Police dispatcher Zac and his longtime friend Tif again team up when murder hit close to home. Zac is having second thoughts about not apply for a more active role on the small-town police force after their success in the first book of the series as the Sheriff blows off any idea that a senior residents could be more than a heart attack from old age. Something feels off to Zak who can't let it go. Tif is more than willing to let him talk it out, but her focus is on her mother who has never emotionally recovered the from deaths of her son and husband close together. Her aunt, who has been her strength and support all these years is suddenly acting strange and Tiffany is beginning to think she made a big mistake coming home.

I loved that this second book in the Bitter Root Mysteries picked up with all the characters from book one. Seeing in to so many towns peoples lives was very interesting for me. I found myself trying to figure out what was going to happen from one page to the next. I cant wait to read book three!

So he sets out to do an unofficial investigation into the death of Lacy Stillman. I found with this book and the one before it that once you start reading you are hook you are hooked. I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. It is a book that I lost sleep over but was ok with that. The ending was not what I thought it would be but it was a whole lot better.

Another good read from the Bitter Root series. I almost feel like I know the town from the descriptions of the locale. It's interesting how unapologetic the author is about the characters' motivations. She doesn't use any rationalization for their behavior, which is a good thing. As an author it would be easy to do a backstory info dump to explain why someone was the way they were. Carmichael resists doing this. Sometimes, we'll never understand why evil people do what they do.
It was good to catch up on the local people and delve into some of the hidden secrets of small town life, too. Excellent read .

Small town, big lies
The second book in this series was just as enjoyable, captivating & page-turning as the first. The characters & dialogue are written so well that I was caught up in feeling the pain as secrets were revealed that affected the lives of so many in the community. Evil was so well camouflaged it was hard to see but overwhelming when the truth was revealed. The twists & turns in this book kept me reading until late in the night. I'm looking forward to the next book & continuing the story!
