An Unconventional Wallflower…

Clarissa Ruthven was born to be a proper lady, but she’s never wanted to live up to the expectations her late father set. She’s always returned the feeling, but as she begins to turn her family’s publishing company upside down, she finds herself unable to forget her handsome boss.

Never Follows the Rules…

Gabriel Adamson believes in order. He certainly doesn’t believe Clary should be sticking her nose in the publishing company, and she definitely has no business invading his every thought. Especially When It Comes to Love…

When Gabe’s dark past comes back to haunt him, he’ll do anything to make sure that Clary isn’t hurt…even if it means giving up the only woman he’s ever loved.

“Don’t you have a heart, Mr. Adamson?”
“Not that I’m aware of.” He knew it wasn’t true. She’d put a lie to the claim. Since Clary strutted into his life wielding a croquet mallet, he’d been reminded of the nuisance of his heart every damned day. The rusty organ responded to her, crashing against his ribs every time she was near, as if she was a magnet and his heart nothing but a twisted piece of metal.”

FINALLY!!! I LOVED A BOOK IN THIS SERIES! It was a real surprise honestly, given that I didn’t exactly care very much for Rules for a Rogue and never even finished A Study in Scoundrels. But considering how great Clary was in those books and the catnippy pairing of a saucy heroine and a stuffy hero, I gave How to Woo a Wallflower a chance. And once again Christy Carlyle proved me wrong in having ever doubted her prowess as an author. This book was everything I could’ve wanted and more.

In a bid for independence and a means to pay for her charitable endeavors, Clary Ruthven begins working at her family’s publishing house. She finds a reluctant mentor of sorts in manager Gabriel Adamson, whom Clary has loathed for years what with his abrasive personality and apparent disdain of her. So, pair two proud, stubborn people who also happen to be super attracted to one and what do you get? Hijinks galore obviously, with a big dose of steamy romance on top and the result was absolutely delightful.

I loved Clary. I loved her vibrance and her fearlessness in general. That said, I couldn’t fully grasp what drove Clary as a character at first. What were her motivations in helping a girls school in Whitechapel? Why did she feel the need to work at a business she was part-owner of when she had no real reason to do so? It almost felt contrived, like this is what ‘strong, quirky heroines’ do. Then I came across this quote and my first impression was turned on its head once again. You’d think someone who loves Pride and Prejudice as much as I do would’ve learned this lesson by now. Alas.
“She didn’t go to Fisk Academy because she was stubborn. She went because it was a place she was needed, a place where she could do good. And the sense of belonging was a thousand times what she felt anywhere else.”

Clary was headstrong, shameless and had a fierce determination to better herself. The fact that she was never afraid to put herself out there, to try things she never had before, to grow and to take control of her life rather than let society or anyone else dictate what should she should and should not do or be, that takes a lot of gumption and is really something to aspire to. Her eagerness to learn was refreshing as well. Clary reminded me of a splash of color in a grey world and I came to adore and admire her with every fiber of my being.

Now whereas Clary was a butterfly, Gabriel was definitely more like a raven: dark, formidable, with a troubled past he’d rather forget. But while others would have withered away or accepted their tragic fates, Gabriel dug himself and his sister out of their less than ideal circumstances, through shady means yes, but the outcome was still the same: success. He built a life for himself. An honest life, with a job and responsibilities he relished in having as they were constant proof of how far he’d come. Gabriel’s background of humble beginnings to self-made success may not have been the most original, but hell, I’ll take it and all the depth and nuance that it lent to his character as opposed to the average and dull aristocratic hero.

As previously mentioned, Gabriel was SUPER STARCHY. He thrived on structure, which made sense considering the chaos of his early life, and he strived to maintain a level of perfection in both his personal and work lives. Well, at least he did until Clary came along. She threw a wrench in his well-ordered existence, but it turned out to be exactly what he needed. After casting himself, his true self, in the shadows for so long in order to escape who he used to be, Gabriel basked in Clary’s light. By inspiring him to be more open and free, she ultimately made him a better person.
“He was lost. Clary was all that mattered. She was the bounty he was ever seeking, the reward for which he’d be searching all the ugly miserable days of his life. She was a bigger slice of heaven than he could ever deserve, but he would never get enough. Somehow, some way, he had to keep her. Love her every day, as she deserved.”

One thing I always love about the opposites attract/enemies to lovers setup is how the leads’ stark differences end up becoming what brings them closer together. As Clary concealed nothing and Gabriel revealed nothing, they found balance in each other. She awakened a softer side Gabriel, a side he never believed possible, while he grounded Clary without caging her as she so often feared. Their shared hunger for more out of life sealed their already strong emotional bond, cementing their power couple dynamic . Something else that I loved about their romance was the quiet intimacies shared between them over time that ultimately led to them falling in love. Whether it was him tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear, ridding themselves of their gloves in order for hand to hand, skin to skin contact, him teaching her self defense or her teaching him to dance. It was all those little things that turned into something very real. By the time they made love for the first time, there was no question or doubt in my mind that Clary and Gabriel were endgame and that’s what I’m always looking for in my books. In a romanceland filled with insta-everything nowadays, it was beyond wonderful to have an honest meeting of the souls type of union.

I know I shelved it as such, but I also felt the need to mention the abundance of competency porn featured in the book Not only did it highlight how much Gabriel and Clary loved their jobs, I love when a book introduces the reader to the innerworkings of an occupation they might not that much about. Obviously as a proud bibliophile, I inhaled every detail of what goes into publishing a book. It helped that everything was presented in such vivid detail, from the smells of fresh paper and ink, to the sounds of the working press, it was as if one was there in the workroom day in and day out with our leads. Kudos to the author for making an already wonderful reading experience that much more special.

My only critique, besides my early struggles with Clary’s characterization, was Gabriel’s last minute ‘I don’t deserve her’ routine. I understand what made him leave, but this overused trope grated and annoyed nevertheless. Listen dude, if you think you don’t deserve her, chances are you’re probably right. That wasn’t the case here, but still, the sentiment’s the same. I did like how Clary handled the situation though. She was devastated and angry, rightly so, but she was confident enough in herself and their love to know that in the end that it wasn’t about her, not really. It was about what Gabriel believed he needed to do in order to deem himself worthy of deserving Clary. His actions to achieve this were dangerous and hard to figure. To quote Gabriel’s savvy sister Sara, “Men aren’t always easily understood, and what they call logic, we might call rubbish”. But in the end I liked how Christy Carlyle resolved the messy conflict , once again taking a perceived negative and turning it into a positive.

I hope this ramblefest of mine inspires someone to read this book. It is so worth it, trust me!

P.S. The office/desk sex at the end was A GIFT.

Gabriel "Gabe" Adamson is a self made man, born and raised on the streets of Whitechapel, he has done many things he is not proud of, but he has left that life behind and never intends to look back. However, at his sister's request, he is back in Whitechapel looking for their mother. Unable to find her, he leaves intending to return home, but he is side tracked when he hears a scream and finds a woman fighting off a man. He is ready to intervene when he realizes two things, one the woman is doing a fine job on her own and two she is his employers sister, his secret desire and greatest annoyance.

Clarissa "Clary" Ruthven is helping her friend Helen at the Fisk Academy for Girls, Clary firmly believes in helping others and wants to give these girls a chance at a better life. While fighting off an unwanted suitor of one of the students, she notices Gabe standing near by. The two have known each other for years and she can't stand him, he is so proper and perfect and gorgeous (not that she is looking). Once the attacker is sent on his way, Clary invites Gabe in to see the school. And when he says he must leave, she suggests they share a cab.

On the ride back to town, they butt heads and Gabe has the cab stop and leaves. Clary follows him, she wants the feuding between them to be over and invites him to her birthday dinner. He refuses and leaves her to go home alone. After her dinner, she learns that her father did not leave her an inheritance like she thought - he left her a dowry. Upset with this information that ruins her plans for the Fisk Academy and an independent life, she tells her brother Kit that she wants to be more involved in the family business. The business that Gabe oversees. Kit encourages her to attend the board meeting.

Gabe is on the verge of quitting, he has been offered a job with an competitor who will pay him more and with his sister getting married, Gabe needs the extra money. He composes his letter of resignation and requests a meeting with Kit. Before he can say anything, Kit offers him a raise and a bonus if he will mentor Clary. The amount is too good to pass up, so he grudging agrees.

Clary is the complete opposite of Gabe in every way, she is warm, friendly, unconventional and overly sympathetic. Gabe is no nonsense, proper, by the book and somewhat grim. They are oil and water. But there is something there, they both feel it and try to ignore it. Gabe tries to ignore Clary, but she is impossible to ignore and when he learns she is planning to go to Whitechapel again, he intercepts her. He knows better than to try and stop her, so he offers her a quick lesson in self defense. Clary is touched that Gabe took the time to help her and begins to admit that her feelings for him confuse her. One minute he is stern and unyielding and the next he is kind and going out of his way to help her.

When a mishap at work leads to Clary being taken into his office to get cleaned up, she tries her hand at flirting with him, but they are interrupted by a visitor to see Gabe, Jane Martin. Gabe was close to her father and considers her a friend, even thought she and his sister hope for more.

When Gabe brings Jane as his guess to the Fisk Academy benefit ball - Clary is horrified to realize she is jealous. When she steals away to compose herself, Gabe finds her and explains that Jane is just a friend and he asks Clary to teach him to dance. They share a kiss before they are interrupted by her sister.

Gabe knows he should stay away from her, but he is drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Clary feels the same way and since she has begun working with him, she is even more impressed with him.

When Gabe is called to Whitechapel and ambushed, he ends up at the Fisk Academy, Clary cares for his wounds and things heat up between them, but when she asks about his scars, he immediately goes cold and leaves.

The next day, he gets bad news and is late to work, when he finally arrives, the building is dark and only Clary is there. The office is closed due to a gas problem and Gabe asks Clary to leave with him, determined to share his past with her.

Once his past is in the open, it seems like these two are headed to a HEA, but Gabe still has secrets and when ghosts from his past come calling, Gabe may have to give up the only woman he has ever loved.

This was a very well written story, it flowed well and it was a very intense, emotional story. Gabe and Clary are both extremely likable characters with strong personalities, there are secrets, passionate kisses, steamy love scenes, a great secondary cast, amusing moments, some heart breaking moments and a very rough road to their HEA.

This is the third book in the series, but I had no problems following the story, without reading the previous books. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be looking for more by this author.

One of Clarissa “Clary” Ruthven’s fondest wishes is to do more for London’s poor women, but to get her inheritance, she would have to marry, which does not figure in Clary’s plan for the foreseeable future. She wants her own place, so she will have to seek a position, and when the opportunity knocks at her door, why not work at the family’s publishing house? Ah, but there looms the forbidding manager, Gabriel Adamson. Clary’s brother Kit, part owner, arranges for Gabriel to mentor Clary, which ought to keep her out of trouble. Gabriel is the quintessential neat freak, and Clary not one to follow the rules; she is a “New Woman”. This might not go so well…

Oh but it does! Christy Carlyle spins another enchanting Victorian tale set at the turn of the twentieth century as women are gaining more independence, and Clary is a perfect example. The author paints a vibrant picture of the working class, the poor of Whitechapel, and moneyed folks with equal ease. Ms. Carlyle’s attention to historical detail makes the story all the more enjoyable as we feel privy to the workings of a publishing house, the grime and despair of the East End, and the conditions of women in a bygone era. Clary is strong-willed and effervescent, and a delectable disruption in Gabriel’s gloomy life. Clary and Gabriel dont actually hate each other, but they certainly don’t go about doing things the same way. Gabriel’s backstory is fascinating, and the secrets he harbours could resurface at any moment, and they do, putting Clary in danger.

And that first kiss! So lovely, so tender and magical! I loved how the romance progressed; it felt very realistic, nothing was rushed, and there were some perfectly charming moments, as well as some difficult ones. At one point, I thought Gabriel quite the silly man, but it turns out he was justified in his choice, even though it was heartbreaking. HOW TO WOO A WALLFLOWER is a marvellous novel for book lovers because of the printing house setting. I always feel secure when I pick up a book by Christy Carlyle; she never disappoints. HOW TO WOO A WALLFLOWER is a beautifully written and compelling story; the characters are very appealing; and the ending will leave you smiling and sighing with happiness.

Enemies-to-romance-to-lovers-to-more. Clarissa (Clary) wanted to only make things better for the working poor of her community. She had the opportunity to do so with the death of her father and the inheritance that he left her. She just knew she could do a lot of good. There was a catch. She had to be married to receive a single shilling of that inheritance. Clary had not intentions on ever marrying but now that plan has been changed to find a man should could marry. In comes the manager, Gabriel, of her family’s paper. He was paired with her to show her the ropes and keep her out of troubles. So that was the plan. Plans have a way of not going the way you planned.

Gabriel and Clary have a way of dealing with each other to get though the day. That was until that kiss. That one thing neither should have been thinking to do. Then it was time to learn more about Gabriel and his life before. A life that may just cause more harm. Gabriel had become the office manager of the Ruyhaven Publishing. He had thought he left the life behind him but find that it was just on hiatus. He desires to marry a plan boring woman went out the door when he finds a connection with Clary.

I did not find much connection to the other stories from this series, but I did enjoy the read regardless and felt the premise went along well with the Romancing the Rules.

An enemies to lovers Victorian story with no dukes or earls or the ton or big balls or oodles of money. These are pretty much down to earth people trying to make their way in life and love. Gabriel and Clary’s story is full of great banter, bickering and nudging. Really liked Gabriel’s background – he is no slouch. Clary just marches to her own drummer with her attitudes and the way she lives. A fantastic read that once you start you feel compelled to finish in a sitting.

Returning to the Ruthven’s story, the third book focuses on Clary, a young woman who can’t wait to get her hands on an inheritance, with which she plans to help the young women at Miss Fisk’s School for Unfortunate Girls. But, she soon learns that she will have to marry to have her own money – and that doesn’t work for her at all. She wants to control her own life and destiny, and without a way to earn her own keep – that isn’t going to happen. Her brother, Kit, part owner of Ruthven Publishing, offers her a place at the company, learning the trade from the manager, Gabriel Adamson. Already knowing the man, and finding him dour and rigid, Clary isn’t thrilled, but means to an end and all that – and she accepts.

Gabriel has worked his entire life to distance himself from his lowly birthplace: a Whitechapel birth and struggle for his early years, he always thought of more – and has done all he can to distance himself from the way he earned his way out. Hiding his secrets and unwilling to allow this boisterous, outspoken and determined young woman to draw his gaze from his goals of a quiet life with a boring and uncomplicated wife, he’s doing everything he can to discourage Clary from continuing to torment his days with her presence and his nights with his thoughts of her. Oh – but Clary’s determination, and her boldness lead to a kiss, a kiss he can’t forget.

Carlyle is a wonderful storyteller and creating this unusual Ruthven family who are all determined to lead lives that make a difference and please them – even if not conventional. Allowing readers to see the darker sides of Victorian life, experience society’s changes and be treated to a story that is wholly historic in feel but differs as th story is about the ordinary people – those without titles or pretentions so valued by the tonne. With Clary’s determination to visit and make a difference in the East End, Gabriel’s every fear is awakened: her safety and his secrets could be the undoing of everything he’s built to this point.

Gradually we see that most of Gabriel’s reserve with Clary is more insecurity and a belief that he’s not worthy of someone as well-bred as she, and his worries of her reaction when she discovers his secrets. But, Clary isn’t just determined to make a difference for the women of Miss Fisk’s, she’s truly encouraged by anyone who can take charge of their life and rise above circumstances of poverty, birth or education – but could this possibly help design a future for her and Gabriel? Another wonderful story in the series, easily read in any order and sure to please fans of historic romance who want something different from the next story about a duke gone wrong or a lady scandalizing the tonne.

Cover: It is a good cover. This is Clarissa in a particular dress she wears for a ball. In fact, this is the dress she was wearing when at the couple's first kiss.
Plot: The story has good pace, it kept me guessing and I've ended wanting more. The writing style is cohesive, with everything relevant to the story and no weak points.
Characters: They are easy to like, connect and understand.  Clarissa is an amazing characters. She is a kick-ass heroine! Gabriel is the mysterious type, with a past he was running from.
Heat: The couple has chemistry together. Coming from enemies to lovers. Their attraction is undeniable and the smut is pertinent to the story.
Addictiveness: This is an easy read with an interesting plot that kept me reading in the middle of the night.

Freshness: There is nothing new here. No big surprise or twist that I wasn't expecting. I love a well written romance, and the lack of originality didn't bother me.

This is the turn of the 20th century and Clarissa is a woman fighting to be independent. She doesn't want to marry so she can get a dowry. She wants to work and fight for causes for young girls. She is a kick-ass heroine. She is a breath of fresh air.

The couple's road is not easy. When we think they are going to have their HEA, shadows from Gabriel's past comes to spoil the fun.

The story is believable and their love takes time, is not instantaneous.

You MAY read this because you followed the series; you SHOULd read this because you like historical; you MUST read this for an amazing kick-ass heroine!!!

3,5 stars! While I really enjoyed Clary, I didn't care for Gabe's "I'm not good enough for you" turn at the end. So it was a nice read, but it was not good enough for a re-read in the future.

What’s it About? Clarissa Ruthven is determined to use her inheritance to help the less fortunate women of London, unfortunately per her late father’s wishes she won’t be inheriting anything unless she marries. Which she doesn’t want to do and she’s not about to give up easily either. So she decides to really dig in and work at her family’s publishing company, even if that means working for Gabriel Adamson who has always hated her and she him. Gabriel doesn’t exactly hate Clary, he just doesn’t like her disorderly way of doing things. He likes order and structure and thinks that she’s a disaster waiting to happen but with these two spending so much time together they go from arguing to wanting much more and when Gabe’s past comes back to haunt him he’s willing to do anything to keep Clary from getting hurt, even if it means giving her up for good.

Overall reaction to the story? How to Woo A Wallflower is the second book I’ve read by Christy Carlyle and I really am enchanted by her stories and her characters. She’s one of those authors who can write an independent, feisty female character without completely taking her out of her time period. Carlyle also manages to create an alpha male like Gabriel who can take charge of a dangerous situation without smothering Clarissa’s personality underneath all his testosterone. I loved the romance that built between two characters who on the surface didn’t seem to have anything in common.

Describe the hero in five words: Serious. Loyal. Caring. Intelligent. Stubborn.
Did you like him? Yes.
Why? Despite his gruff exterior or perhaps because of it, Gabe was a great balance to Clary's more impulsive, "think later" personality. I loved that while he fought tooth and nail not to like Clary, he always looked out for her, albeit in a very stern, disapproving way. Gabe came from nothing and made something good of himself and for his sister but his violent past was always hanging over his head, giving him a no nonsense attitude. But as big, bad, and invincible as Gabe seemed, he had some interesting, emotional weaknesses. Overall, he was a big, surly guy on the outside but a softie on the inside and those are the best kinds of heroes.

Describe the heroine in five words: Spirited. Independent. Intelligent. Stubborn. Kind.
Did you like her? Yes.
Why? Clary is the type of character who doesn't wait around for her happiness to come around and she certainly doesn't wait for a dashing hero to save her, much less a grumpy one like Gabe. She was such a caring character but I really loved how fiesty she got whenever she was around Gabe, it showed her determination to control her own life as much as she could. She took the initiative to learn skills that were all but forbidden for women to learn in that time. She was, *gasp* well read too, can you imagine that? Clary could be so stubborn and sometimes that frustrated me. I admire a strong woman so long as she's smart and reasonable about it.

Let’s talk about the romance: Gabe and Clary didn't exaclty make each other smile at first. There was a mutual dislike with a touch of curiosity but with the circumstances of Clary's inheritence it constantly put these two within sniping distance of one another. I liked the sniping because it slowly gave way to a mutual respect and then an attraction that they couldn't escape from. At first glance they seemed like total opposites but those contrasts balanced them out as individuals. Gabe brought some order and calm while Clary brought fun and a touch of chaos. They worked well together.

How about that supporting cast? Clary's family is a bit odd in an endearing way which makes the scenes with them a treat but also gives a little insight to how Clary's life was growing up. Gabe's sister was a welcome addition to the story and I admit, she piqued my curiosity. She had the same rough start in life as Gabe so I'd like to know how that shaped and scarred her.

Click It or Skip It? Click it. Gabe and Clary's antagonistic beginning makes for a delicious romance later.

Gabriel Adamson felt little guilt at what he had to do so he and his sister could survive; that is until a ray of sunshine enters his well-ordered life. Too bad she’s the sister of his employer and she’s soon to take her place as part owner of said business. As Gabe comes to know the little spitfire the more she makes him question everything he’s done and makes him wish for more; but he knows his background means he will never be good enough for her.
The only thing Clarissa Ruthven wants is an independent life, not the life her staid father thought women should have, that doesn’t include marriage. Clary’s independence often takes her to less than savory parts of London trying to improve the life of women. A place where she runs into a man she hasn’t been able to forget even though he acts as if she doesn’t exist. A man that she comes to know well and makes her question her decision to avoid marriage.
Christy Carlyle has once again drawn us into the world of the unconventional Ruthven family and taken us on a wild ride in the form of the always effervescent Clarissa. Well done m’lady, well done.

While I enjoyed the final book in this series, it seemed that the romance happened a little too quickly. Although it definitely is the case that sometimes it is the people who annoy each other at first who end up falling for each other. I did have a suspicion in the first book that Clary and Gabriel were going to have some sort of interesting things happen as soon as she started trying to brighten up his office. The backstory of Gabriel’s history in Whitechapel is believable and I liked the way it tied into how he got his position at Ruthven’s. I still didn’t like this one as much as the others. It just felt like things moved a little too quickly.

Loved it

These two are perfect for each other. Christy Carlisle brings the light, otherwise known as Clary, into Gabe's dark existence. He is working so hard to escape his past. Clary is trying so hard to find a future of her own. They don't even realize what they need is right in front of them.

How to Woo a Wallflower by Christy Carlyle is Book Three in the "Romancing the Rules" series. This is the story of Clarissa 'Clary' Ruthven and Gabriel Adamson. I have read (and LOVED them!) the other books in this series but feel this can be a standalone book.
Gabriel grew up a poor boy in Whitechapel where he had to fight his way to get money for food for his family. So much so that they used to bet on him when fighting. His mother was nothing to speak up and would get beaten by men. But when Gabriel was 16 years old him and his sister left there leaving their mother. Now almost 10 years later Gabriel isn't that wild boy anymore. Gabriel is an Office Manger for Ruyhven Publishing Enterprise and been helping to run it for years. Gabriel wears suits and never has a hair out of place. Gabriel knows that when he marries is will be to a plan and boring lady so that he will have calmness in his life...nothing like the beautiful and unruly Clarissa.
Clary is the youngest daughter of Leopold Ruyhven and along with that is very independent with the new age thinking that women are more than what people except. Clary has met Gabriel before thinking he is a stiff, never smiles and always dress perfectly. Clary knows that he sees all her faults and doesn't think much of her. But on her 21 birthday she is to inherit part of the family Publishing Enterprise and plans to work there. Clary doesn't have an interest in getting married but does want to help the poor women and children she knows. When her brother puts Gabriel in charge of teaching her the ropes of the company they start butting heads more. Gabriel seems to want everything neat and play by the rules but Clary isn't that type of person.
Ms. Carlyle knows how to write some great romance stories and this was one you won't be able to put down! Loved seeing Clary and Gabriel come together.

I loved Clary and Gabe's story--she's probably my favorite of all three of the Ruthven siblings now :)

Clarissa Ruthven's just turned twenty-one is fresh out of school, and she's got plans. Lots of plans. She has a charity school she's dedicated to, a plan to use her share of the family publishing business to help both her charity and women in general, and many, many other grand ideas. Finding out that other than her share of the business, she gets nothing from her father's inheritance until she marries just doesn't work for her. Determined to get at least some of her plans into motion, she agrees to a mentorship at the publishing house, even though she can't stand the manager her father hired.

Gabe Adamson only takes on mentoring Clary because he needs the extra money her brother offers for the job because his sister needs a dowry. He's devoted his life to bringing himself and his sister up from the gutter they grew up in, and is determined that nothing will drag them back down into the muck...until circumstances almost do.

Gabe and Clary together are absolutely wonderful--their enemies-to-lovers story is just so much fun to read. She finds his proper stuffiness is annoying and is convinced he hates her; he's fascinated by her but is sure he'll never deserve her--the push and pull between them is amazing. I had so much fun watching them fall in love, and their grand gesture moment? So, so good. I closed the book with a happy, dreamy smile on my face.

Are we sure there's no more Ruthven siblings hiding in the wings? No? I guess I'll just have to wait for Ms. Carlyle to start a new series, then...

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A-

A Dynamite High 5 Stars for How to Woo a Wallflower by Christy Carlyle. This series just gets better and better! Clarissa Ruthven is a proper young lady who’s in quite a pickle, she can’t get her inheritance until she marries. She wants nothing of the sort, she’s an independent and self-disciplined woman who does not need a man in her life… or so she thinks. She spends her spare time volunteering at Miss Fisk’s boarding school for unfortunate girls. This is truly where Clarissa’s heart belongs, she loves these girls and wants to help them become something in society… however, without her inheritance, she can’t help them. In order to help earn money, she works at her family’s publishing company, there’s just one problem, her boss... He’s irresistible but he doesn’t like her… however, she soon changes his mind and he begins to fall for her.

Carlyle’s writing is impeccable, she weaves a tale of such passion and add in interesting twists and turns that keeps one reading long into the wee hours of the morning. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to any historical romance fanatic!

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

This book really impressed me!

Clarissa may be an adult but she doesn't have the freedom she wants or the funds she needs to help her beloved charities. Taking a job at her family's press seems like the only way she can secure her future and help women in need. Falling for the business' manager is just a bonus.

Gabe hates the idea of having Clarissa in his work space, distracting him and everyone else. Sure, she's smart and beautiful and starting to grow on him, but he knows he could never be anything more than an employee to this woman. Yet, he's drawn to Clarissa and watching her put herself in danger is hard to endure. His feelings become something he may not be able to ignore either.

When the pair's unlikely relationship starts to grow into something bigger, so do the problems. Gabe has secrets about his past that he doesn't want to share and it leads to dangerous decisions which could change everything. Can Clarissa be the one to save Gabe from himself?

I had high hopes for this story going into it because I really enjoyed the first two of this series. I didn't know Clarissa's character very well but I did have an opinion of Gabe and I wasn't sure if I would like him very much. He came off in those books as stuffy and dry. Well, I was totally wrong. He was a great male lead and completely the right match for our feisty heroine.

The pacing was steady even though the plot didn't really move much for the first 2/3 of the book. It was more of a character-driven story and I didn't mind that at all. There is some action and even a nice dose of suspense toward the end of the book. Add in the hot sexual tension and there was never a dull moment.

As for the romance, I loved these two together. Their arguments were entertaining and they challenged each other in many ways. They had great chemistry and the love scenes had a lot of spice. Out of the three couples in this series, I think this pair might be my favorite. But I'm excited to see what comes next.

In closing...
Two hot-headed people fall madly in love. Five suns!

About the Book:

An Unconventional Wallflower…

Clarissa Ruthven was born to be a proper lady, but she’s never wanted to live up to the expectations her late father set. Determined to use her inheritance to help the less fortunate women of London, she’s devastated to learn that she won’t be inheriting anything until she marries, a fate she has no interest in. Unwilling to let go of her plans, Clary works at Ruthven Publishing for Gabriel Adamson, a man who’s always hated her.

But Gabe soon finds he can’t resist Clary’s sense of freedom or her passionate kisses and he starts to crave everything she’s willing to give him.

Especially When It Comes to Love…

When Gabe’s dark past comes back to haunt him, he’ll do anything to make sure that Clary isn’t hurt…even if it means giving up the only woman he’s ever loved.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book I have read in this series, although I have read other books by Christy Carlyle. I have recently purchased the other two books in the series and intend to read them soon. Although it is the third book in this series, I feel it reads well as a standalone title.

Gabriel Adamson has made his previously hectic life one of order. He has taken a new name and left behind the young boy who grew up in the slums of Whitechapel.

Revisiting his past is something he wants no part of but he has found it necessary.

Imagine his shock when he runs into one of the last people he would imagine to find there.

Clarissa Ruthven is determined to use her inheritance to help the unfortunate women of Whitechapel. She spends her time supporting a school there for girls who may otherwise become lost in this slum.

Gabriel is drawn to Clary and she to him, but this is a relationship that can not be.

Will their mutual attraction lead to their own happily ever after or will Gabriel's past be their undoing?

I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.5 of 5.0 flames.

Sparks fly when these two give in to their attraction.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review

I was glued from the start and couldn't put it down. There was something there between them from the start and they knew it. I loved how they were with each other because to everyone else it looked like they couldn't stand each other. They were meant for each other and balanced each other out many times. I did not expect his past to come up the way it did or for everything to end the way it did and I loved it.

Clary finds the good in everything and doesn't judge or blink an eye at anything. I loved that she had that childlike innocents about her, but was smarter and more mature than she looked. She never gave up on anything from her ideas to people and could make everyone smile.

Gabe has avoided her at every turn only to be stuck with her every day. I loved that he took such great care of his sister and didn't judge either. He thought his past would be the end of everything in his life, but he was so wrong about many things.

Posted on What I'm Reading

I have to say that I liked How to Woo a Wallflower. I adore Clary. I mean she's so bubbly and is willing to try anything. She's hard working, and extremely determined to help her cause. She's willing to overcome any obstacles even stubborn man. Gabe is totally awesome. I mean he's a good guy, but he likes order. He strides to live a different life than what he grew up from. He doesn't feel like he's good enough for Clary.

We have this struggle between Clary and Gabe. Clary doesn't understand why the guy doesn't like her, but it's the complete opposite. However, he doesn't see himself a good match for her, especially when his past is coming knocking on the door.

Overall, I liked the story. These characters are wonderful together. Plus, they seem to push each others buttons. She can be wild and chaotic, but sometimes you need that in your life. A fairly fast read, with romance and drama. I mean you have to people you push each others buttons the right way there is bound to be drama.

This was a wonderful book. I loved the characters. Clary is impatient, young and optimistic. She gives her all to anything she does and is dedicated to her causes. Gabriel has a dark past and because of the chaos in his past he believes in following the rules and in keeping everything in order.

I loved how Gabriel and Clary interacted throughout the story and really loved the ending.

This book is part of a series but I’m an be read as a stand-alone book.

A Delightful story that will keep you turning the pages. Gabe Adamson never intended to go back. Born and growing up on the streets of one of London's worst areas, Whitechapel, he did whatever was needed for he and his sister to survive. Now, working at a publishing company he worked he way up, but is determined to keep order in all he does. But sometimes fate steps in the way in the form of Clary Ruthven, sister of his employer. Having known each other for years, but never really getting along, a situation happens when he comes upon her fending off a man.
Clary only wants to be independent and keep helping the less fortunate women in London. Waiting only to inherit her funds from her father, she finds out she has to marry first and it will be her dowry. Getting ready to take her place as part owner of the business, she has to work with Gabe and that is when the fun begins. They are really exact opposites, but as the saying goes, opposites can attract.
Read to see what happens to this wonderful couple and prepare to have a smile as you turn the last page! Cannot wait to read more..

Wonderfully entertaining I loved it!

Clarissa Ruthven had to follow by the rules her father had dictated, after all he had a book written on comportment, at the family publishing business. But Clary wants more from her life than to abide by the rules. She wants to help the less fortunate girls of White Chapel. Her brother worries for her and tasks the only man Clary is flustered with, the handsome Gabriel Adamson. The man is so uptight and by the book the polar opposite of Clary’s passionate sunshine nature. When they’re together the air practically crackles with electricity and tension.
Gabriel Adamson has come a long way from the street urchin he was, growing up in the worst part of White Chapel but everything comes with a price and old demons come back to haunt him. He knows that Clarissa is not for the likes of him. But one kiss from Clary and he’s lost, such beauty is not for him. He needs and craves her like the air that he breaths. Sometimes the love for the right woman is a risk he will take for a future he’s always dreamed.

I loved this it was a fantastic read, the plot was well done and the story flowed well. The banter was witty and entertaining. Never a dull moment lots of twists and turns that have you anticipating the end, but like in every Christy Carlyle book the ending is well worth the heartache Gabriel and Clary go through for their Happy ending.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and publisher through Edelweiss for my honest opinion.

Listen, I am not the most pickiest of readers but I do like it when my characters are consistent. Gabriel all of the sudden going back to white chapel to fight given how much he hated being from there makes absolute no sense for the character. His back being against the wall made no sense. The whole thing ended up pissing me off.

Clary was great. She was naive in the best way and fun. She was also smart and dedicated.

I also didn’t understand how their love came to be.

The more I read on the more I was like what the fuck is going on.

Third in the series, but the first I've read. Coming in late to the series didn't hinder my enjoyment, will definitely read the other two books. Enjoyable read. Likable characters who aren't the typical Dukes, Earls, or damsels who only want to get married.
