Loved, loved, loved! This novel embodies everything I love most about historical fiction. The beauty of Ireland is the perfect setting for this family saga. I truly did not want it to end. I am so looking forward to the next novel... excited to continue this journey with the Deverill clan. 5 stars.

A charming historical fiction tale set in the early 1900’s in Ireland and England. The story follows three young women whose connection weaves thick and thin throughout several years and many life changing situations. One of the best aspects of this novel is that it largely revolves around an old family castle on the countryside in Ireland. There is love, loss and death. There are ghosts, love triangles and hidden secrets. All of these ingredients add up to one enticing tale that kept me curious to the end.
While I enjoyed this generational saga, it did feel quite lengthy. My attention did waver in and out as far as feeling truly connected to the characters and storyline. It almost felt as though there was one too many storylines involved that made the novel spread a little too far.

Insightful, riveting, and incredibly atmospheric!
Songs of Love and War is an intriguing tale that sweeps you to Co. Cork in the early 1900s when Ireland is full of unrest and upheaval not only due to the Great War being waged on the fields of Europe but in their own countryside where the simmering anger and need for self-identity, patriotism, and independence from Anglo rule are about to come to a head.
The prose is poetic and vividly described. The three main characters Kitty, Birdie, and Celia are strong and independent, and their lives are bound and entangled together by the magnificent Castle Deverill that graces the Irish hillside and in some way each calls home. And the plot is an engaging saga filled with self-discovery, familial drama, social stratification, spiritual occurrences, tragedy, heartbreak, romance, war, life, loss, and friendship.
Songs of Love and War is an exquisitely written, exceptionally detailed, beautiful start to a trilogy that is sure to be a big hit with historical fiction fans and book clubs everywhere, and you can be sure that Daughters of Castle Deverill, Deverill Chronicles #2, is already on my TBR list.

Primera novela de ficción historica de la saga Deverill.
Nos sitúa en las primeros años del siglo XX, en una Irlanda convulsa donde se empieza a entrever las diferencias con los ingleses y quieren ser independientes además de la primera guerra mundial.
En este marco nos encontramos con una familia acomodada con un gran maleficio que arrastra desde generaciones.
La historia es contada por varias voces, una de ellas es la de Kitty una de las hijas de esta famila , una niña apasionada y curiosa que se convierte en una mujer con un profundo sentimiento patriótico y un gran apego a sus raíces.
Después está Bridie de la misma edad que Kitty pero del escalón más bajó ya que pertenece al servicio de la casa, pero no importa para que se hagan amigas.
Por último está Celia que vive en la ciudad y pasa los veranos y vacaciones con ellas.
La autora nos adentra en una apasionante historia llena de traición , amor, engaños ,sueños,esperanza y un sinfín de sentimientos más muy bien entremezclados y contados de una forma magistral , todo ello con el fondo de las bellas tierras irlandesas.

This is the third book I have read by Santa Montefiore and I can flat out state it won't be the last. I very much enjoyed The Beekeeper's Daughter as well as Secrets of the Lighthouse.
Now this book, The Girl in the Castle, captured me immediately. If you like stories set in Ireland, reading a bit of the historical fiction interspersed about the Irish War for Independence and a bit of ghost appearances to boot - you will love this book.
I'm not big on paranormal stories but the ghost part wasn't a primary feature. They did figure in but as a supporting role, and a very light supporting role at that. Early on I was invested in the progressing life story lines of the Deverill family, Jack O'Leary and the Doyles.
The story starts with Kitty Deverill and Bridie Doyle as 9 year old girls. Kitty lives a privileged life in the castle and Bridie is the daughter of one of the cooks. This doesn't stop them from forming a deep friendship and feeling like they are sisters. Two different worlds these girls inhabit but Kitty is as Irish as any Doyle or O'Leary. Kitty's mother Maude is English and so the family is called Anglo Irish - this sets them apart during the Irish uprising. There is enough action, a bit of romance and lovely descriptions of West Cork, Ireland to get lost in.
Be warned, this is the exact same book as The Songs of Love in War so don't purchase both! The Girl in the Castle is the title released in the USA and Songs of Love and War is the British title. It's the same book.
The second book is called The Daughters of Castle Deverill. I am certainly getting that one on Kindle. There is a bit of food mentioned in the book and I admit to grabbing a recipe from the cookbook London to pair with this novel. The recipe may be found at www.novelmeals.wordpress.com. I spent some time reading and eating. That's a nice thing to do.

Montefiore's writing is a sweeping saga, grand in its scope, and thorough in its viewpoints from different characters that each play their own role. However when it came down to it, I had to dislike Montefiore's ideas of faithfulness and love or lack thereof. None of the three main girls knew how to love anyone but themselves. Yes they had tragic lives. Yes they endured loss and heartache. But that is no excuse to be selfish and unfaithful and it does not make it okay to make horrible mistakes with no thought to the consequences. Montefiore's praising of Kitty's unfaithfulness to her husband made me uncomfortable. Just because you love someone does not make it okay to sleep with them when you're married to someone else. Ever. Bridie's selfish pursuit of vengeance makes her think of no one but herself, and she has no idea how to love any of the men who try to win her heart. Instead she just uses them. It comes down to this: there is nothing in these girls' actions or motivations to admire. I'm not sure I will be continuing this trilogy. I prefer to read about characters I can admire and emulate.

I truly enjoyed this first of a series of three book about what I guess could be loosely called The Downton Abbey of Ireland. Ms Montefiore has filled her novel with characters that are both endearing and tragedies that are real. Set mostly in Ireland, it portrays a gorgeous setting but one that is fraught with political dealings between the Irish seeking to be independent and the British looking to hold onto what they believe to be theirs. The beginning of this novel was a bit drawn out and I considered letting it go as an unfinished novel. However, oftentimes a book such as this needs to have its time to develop characters, settings, and appeal. Filled with all things Irish like ghosts, family curses, castles, mystical objects, and of course witches, it delights those of us who claim to have a trace of Irish ancestry in their blood. There is lots of love and love triangles which as always adds that romantic piece we so often find we are in need of. I am anxious to continue the series. Good diverse characters lend to a fine read and this book does not disappoint in that aspect.

No puedo hacer nada más que darle calificación máxima porque amé este libro, amé su historia, los personajes, ver el crecimiento que van teniendo a través de los años, los cambios que inevitablemente eso conlleva y sobre todo amé que la historia mezcla amor, amistad, familia y guerra.
Hay momentos muy bellos que realmente me encantaron y otros que me rompieron el corazón en mil pedazos, pero sobre todo amé la fortaleza interna de las protagonistas sobre todo de Kitty y su gran crecimiento, su sentido de pertenencia y su amor infinito a Irlanda.
El desarrollo va de menos a más y a pesar de ser una historia tranquila en cuanto al ritmo, cada página me atrapaba más y no lo pude soltar hasta terminarlo.
Una historia realmente amada y espero con ansias leer los próximos dos libros

Truly a wonderful read. No wonder it was a Reader's Pick at my local library. Set in Ireland during the years Ireland was fighting for separation from Britain. Rich girl loves poor boy. Her bestfriend goes from below stairs drudgery, in Ireland; to rich rich lady in America. Plausible and unputdownable.

I loved this book, my first by Santa Montefiore. I will have to look into her other books, but luckily this one is the start of a series. This one had everything I love about historical fiction, it's a real meaty family-saga. The many characters and storylines, plus the wonderful setting of Ireland were all well thought out. I loved reading about what the people went through in the lead up to independence. The Black and Tans make an appearance and it just felt authentic. The castle is wonderful! Lots of characters, besides the main ones, that added so much. Grandmother Adeline and her cannabis tea, as well as her sisters, the Shrub sisters, were a hoot. I wasn't sure about the ghosts that are stuck in the castle but it was such a small bit that I decided to go with it. I can't wait for the next book. I highly recommend this one to anyone who likes historical fiction.

Kitty was nine.
Kitty was ignored by her mother.
Kitty was friends with a servant.
Kitty had a very harsh governess.
Kitty could see her dead ancestor in the castle tower, and no one believed her.
Poor Kitty Deverill had a lot to deal with at her young age, but she was spunky, delightful, and resilient.
Kitty was a character I really enjoyed, and THE GIRL IN THE CASTLE was a book I really enjoyed..
THE GIRL IN THE CASTLE is set around 1910 and lets us into the lives of aristocrats and the lives of servants in a castle.
I enjoyed the talk of life in both worlds and the Deverill family.
THE GIRL IN THE CASTLE also addressed the issue of Ireland and the British during the fight for Irish liberty. That part of history was interesting, but I liked the family saga better.
The personal side of the lives of the characters intrigued me. THE GIRL IN THE CASTLE was a fun, informative read with unforgettable characters.
Ms. Montefiore's writing is exquisite and detailed easily allowing the reader to step into every situation with the characters.
ENJOY if you read THE GIRL IN THE CASTLE. The book became better and better as I turned each page.
You will fall in love with the characters and wish you could join in the family fun at the castle in Ireland and in their homes in London.
The gorgeous cover pulls you in along with the marvelous story line.
I am looking forward to Ms. Montefiore's sequels to THE GIRL IN THE CASTLE. 4/5

Incredible, Fascinating and stunning is the way to describe Montefiore's writing.
I was absolutely blown away by this book. The History! The Romance! The Drama! Incredible.
This book is based around the Irish War for Independence, and the Deverill Family. How the history mingles with the characters is spellbinding, drawing you right in to the Irish countryside. The setting is absolutely fabulous, the descriptive narrative is something to awe over. We start with the main character Kitty Deverill as a young child, and throughout the novel you watch her become a woman. I love strong female characters and their are a few in this one! I cannot recommend it enough. I have already passed this onto 3 people at work who are patiently waiting for the other to finish so they can have their turn too! Of course this is a trilogy so I am eager to begin the next one and to see what more could possibly happen to this adoring family. Read it! it's magnificent!

This is the first of a trilogy and it's set mainly in Ireland with appearances by England and New York. It begins in 1910 with three friends from very different backgrounds. At this time the girls are nine years old and Jack is twelve. Kitty lives in the castle and the three of them spend as much time as possible together while keeping their friendship a secret from the adults. It progresses from here up until they are in their mid twenties.
From here it covers WWI, the Easter Rising and the Irish Civil War. This part was very interesting. It showed the characters patriotism and how they reacted to events but it's not heavy unreadable stuff.
There are some great characters in the novel. I liked Kitty very much. She seemed to be the sanest one of her family. Her mother is one of the coldest most unfeeling women I ever read. Kitty's grandparents are adorable even if her grandfather does go off the deep end from time to time.
I really enjoyed the parts set in Ireland but maybe I'm biased. I love this period of our history.
I can't find anything I didn't like. The part about the ghosts made me raise my eyebrows a bit at first but by the end they just blended in as part of the story. The fact that the book 'ends' without an ending annoys some people and it is hard to wait for the next one. Fortunately the second is out and I've already downloaded it.

It's a whopper of a novel at 503 pages but I flew through it and read it in two days. I think it would make a great tv series and I would highly recommend it.

An English family living in Ireland during the Irish fight for independence is the backdrop for this most entertaining novel. The Deverill family includes a fascinating cast of characters including the heroine Kitty.
It is easy to become fully immersed in The Girl in The Castle, the well defined characters, history and landscape will captivate. If you enjoy the PBS series Downton Abby and reading historical fiction The Girl in the Castle will not disappoint.

Het eerste deel uit de Deverill reeks is een vlot geschreven roman waarin we kennis maken met een hele familie aan personages. Het verhaal heeft voldoende variatie en leest aangenaam door de verschillende delen en de korte hoofdstukken. Zeker een reeks om verder op te nemen.

There is nothing I love more than a big, historical fiction book to sink into when I’m faced with a rainy weekend. The only thing that could make it better is know that the book is the first of a trilogy and that if the other two are as good as the first I have a lot of great reading ahead of me. I have been on a wonderful reading run lately and I hope it continues.
The Girl in the Castle takes place in Ireland in the early 20th century. It starts just before the Irish bid for independence and covers the war and its aftermath. The Deverill family is English and Irish and the baby of the family Kitty, is pretty much ignored by her mother. She has a governess but for a lot of her day she runs loose. Kitty has become good friends with Bridie, the daughter of the castle’s cook. She also finds a lot of love from her grandmother; she shares something else with her as well. They both have the ability to see the ghosts of the castle and talk to them. This bothers her mother and the look in her eyes makes other uncomfortable.
There is another close friend to both girls – a young man named Jack. Both girls love him and you know that is not going to bode well for their friendship but for a time they are still young…but soon that war turns their lives upside down. Jack is very involved and despite being told to stay away Kitty helps in the ways she can until things get a little too close to the home she loves so much.
This is a book rich in character and story. It’s one of those books you start reading and you soon forget you are holding a book because you have become so immersed in the world on the pages. The writing carries you away and you are living in a castle in Ireland in the early 20th century. You find yourself forced to put down the book and it takes you a while to re-acclimate to the real world. Ms. Montefiore has created a wonderful world full of richly developed characters that feel real. I can’t wait for the next volume in the trilogy – there was quite the teaser left for the continuing saga. It will be hard to be patient.
The Girl in the Castle takes place in Ireland in the early 20th century. It starts just before the Irish bid for independence and covers the war and its aftermath. The Deverill family is English and Irish and the baby of the family Kitty, is pretty much ignored by her mother. She has a governess but for a lot of her day she runs loose. Kitty has become good friends with Bridie, the daughter of the castle’s cook. She also finds a lot of love from her grandmother; she shares something else with her as well. They both have the ability to see the ghosts of the castle and talk to them. This bothers her mother and the look in her eyes makes other uncomfortable.
There is another close friend to both girls – a young man named Jack. Both girls love him and you know that is not going to bode well for their friendship but for a time they are still young…but soon that war turns their lives upside down. Jack is very involved and despite being told to stay away Kitty helps in the ways she can until things get a little too close to the home she loves so much.
This is a book rich in character and story. It’s one of those books you start reading and you soon forget you are holding a book because you have become so immersed in the world on the pages. The writing carries you away and you are living in a castle in Ireland in the early 20th century. This book was strange to me in the finalities and in spots along the way. The first half was a full 4 stars and I enjoyed it. The second half? Quite beyond the switching and the Birdie (Bridget) story and switching to NYC or the other two locales? Well, it was, for me, like a slowing deflating balloon. Never a big pop, just a tiny squeak of air going out of it.
All three women? After being such interesting girls? No good decisions. Selfish is one thing but these were air headed ones. A few hard to comprehend in picking or having made at all. Others don't feel this. I see from the reviews. To me, it wasn't just about feelings or desires either- but about very little brain or logic or perceptions. Way, way dumber than their girlhoods. All three of them.
So I probably will not continue with this saga. It wasn't the fairies or ghosts in the tower or any of that which turned me off either. Nor even the unnatural mother and/or cold, shallow Maud- but the core 3 women's choices and older demeanors. Just disappointing. And almost none of the men were worth it, either. Jack surely wasn't.

Add ons in depth too- because they were set to get a 2022 interest level in a chick lit mode (let's make this more "modern" for the marketing") inclusions. No Irish story /novel fiction work seems complete in 2000 plus era until a nun either commits assault or gives away a baby who they tell the mother died. It's such a cliche that I think I have read it 3 times in this year alone.

🏰Madre mía, es la primera vez que sufro tanto con un libro de Santa. Estrujado el corazón mal me ha dejado; Pensé que acabaría conmigo.
Sí debo reconocer que lo que he aprendido con los conflictos entre irlandeses e ingleses…Ha sido maravilloso; Ni qué decir del amor de Kitty por su país, me dejó con piel de gallina leer a éste personaje, defender con tanto fervor su tierra y el castillo.
🏰Es un drama histórico HERMOSO, situado en medio de la Guerra de Independencia de Irlanda de la que aprendí TODO ya que desconocía la historia de éste país. Para las que no tenemos buenas experiencias con la novela histórica, esa que en algunos libros es densa, este libro es ideal para aprender ya que mantiene al lector interesado, sin perder el ritmo en momento alguno. Los paisajes descritos crean un ambiente ideal para esta lectura y por supuesto, hay una historia de amor.
🏰El hecho de estar narrada en tercera persona es excelente porque el lector tiene un punto de vista amplio de todo lo que sucede, conoce absolutamente todo, desde los sentimientos y pensamientos de nuestros personajes más relevantes hasta la presencia de lo que ocurre a su alrededor.
Canciones de amor y guerra es el inicio de una saga familiar y no encuentro palabras para describir lo que me ha encantado éste primer libro; Una trilogía que comienza cuando Kitty Deverill tiene nueve años, al igual que su amiga Bridie y su prima Celia. Kitty y Bridie son muy unidas, pese a que son de clases sociales diferentes ya que estamos en una época en la que los aristócratas y los empleados domésticos no podían ser amigos.
🏰La historia se centra en Kitty y Bridie ya que Celia (prima de Kitty) empieza a tener más protagonismo cerca del final de la novela pero el resto de personajes son igual de relevantes, como ser la mamá de Kitty, Maud, una mujer desdichada, infeliz y amargada y que ignora a su hija menor Kitty y se centra más en Victoria y Elspeth,hermanas mayores. Decir que Kitty es diferente a ellas porque éstas están a punto de alcanzar la mayoría de edad y solo piensan en buscar un hombre rico con quien casarse.
También tenemos a Henry que es hermano de Kitty, estudia fuera y luego va a la guerra; lady Adeline, la abuela de Kitty, que comparte con su nieta su afición por las historias de espíritus y maldiciones y el don de ver fantasmas, y ella sí que la quiere mucho a su nieta. Creo que Kitty tendrá un gran papel en esto paranormal de la novela, pero aquí es como la base de lo que vendrán en el libro dos y tres.
Volviendo a los personajes: Hubert, el abuelo de Kitty, la señorita Grieve que es institutriz temporal ya que luego llegará Robert Trench, lady Grace Rowan-Hampton que es amiga de la familia y “algo más”, sobre todo, de Kitty, Jack O'Leary amigo de Kitty y Bridie y Michael hermano mayor de Bridie quien con ya casi diecinueve años trabaja con su padre en las tierras y solo piensa en querer echar a los británicos protestantes de Irlanda; le da igual para él quiénes fuesen y lo bien que se portaran con sus arrendatarios.
Kitty es nieta de Lord Deverill, conocido en la comunidad de Ballinakelly por ser bondadoso con sus arrendatarios. Bernie (papá de Kitty) es el futuro heredero del Castillo Deverill, y vive junto a su familia en el pabellón de caza.
Kitty heredó de su abuela Adeline la habilidad sobrenatural de ver a sus antepasados que habitan en el castillo como fantasmas. Kitty tiene un carácter decidido, es valiente y sin pelos en la lengua. La admiré y agradezco a la autora por ser tan cuidadosa en las descripciones dolorosas que ocurren en su vida.
🏰La Primera Guerra Mundial cambiará el destino de todos ellos, separándolos por los conflictos que trajo consigo, entre ellos la Guerra de Independencia Irlandesa, alejandolos unos de otros y convirtiendo al castillo en un lugar solitario, arrasado, prácticamente en ruinas.
Lo sobrenatural guarda relación con la historia ya que todo acontece en torno al castillo de Deverill: Una leyenda familiar sobrevuela el castillo de Deverill desde hace mucho tiempo: cuando el primer Lord Deverill obtuvo las tierras en donde está el castillo, las mismas fueron arrebatadas a la familia O’Leary, de modo que una maldición atrapa a todos los hombres Deverill después de morir, condenados a un encierro como fantasmas hasta que un O`Leary regrese a vivir al castillo.
🏰En canciones de amor y guerra hay personajes complejos, bien definidos lo que da cuenta que la autora ha hecho una gran labor de documentación e investigación. La trama es compleja pero la prosa dulce de Santa la hace llevadera. ¡Cómo describe la naturaleza de Irlanda y el sentir de Kitty por su tierra!
🏰Canciones de amor y guerra, contiene drama, intriga y romance obviamente, del cual no hablaré. Solo dejo una cita: “Ella levantó la barbilla y él inclinó la cabeza para posar sus labios en los suyos en un beso largo y tierno. Kitty cerró los ojos con fuerza, dejando una escapar una última lágrima por Jack, pues debía cerrar ese capítulo. El libro que contenía entre sus páginas toda la tragedia y el dolor del levantamiento armado de Irlanda y el sufrimiento de Kitty debía quedar arrumbado en la estantería para que un nuevo libro diera comienzo. Un libro positivo, lleno de luz y alegría.”

RECOMENDADISIMO. Eso sí: final abierto (casi me da un infarto) MUY impactante, que me dejó 👀, que deduzco continúan en “Hijas del castillo Deverill”, su segunda parte (que leeré dentro de un tiempito, tengo que darle tiempo de descanso porque es mucha la información).
El epílogo es tan… tan… tan AAAAH! que me ha dejado… Con la mandíbula desencajada; con muchas ganas de saber más, qué carajos pasará con los personajes tras ese intenso final y qué será de su futuro (AAAAH -léase grito histérico)

Graafschap Cork – Ierland
Kitty Deverill is negen jaar oud en woont op het landgoed van haar oma en opa, Lord & Lady Deverill. Kitty brengt heel veel tijd door bij haar grootmoeder omdat haar moeder niet in haar is geïnteresseerd. Ook haar zussen die op huwbare leeftijd zijn, hebben geen interesse voor haar en haar broer zit op Eton.
Zo komt het dat Kitty op jonge leeftijd zich een zekere geslotenheid heeft eigen gemaakt. Ze zit liever bij haar oma die dezelfde interesses heeft en samen hebben ze één speciale gave. Kitty hield meer van haar grootouders dan van haar ouders. Door hen werd ze gewaardeerd en ze gaven haar tijd en aandacht. Adeline Deverill is verzot op haar kleindochter.
Kitty’s boezemvriendin en trouwe bondgenoot is Bridie. Zij is de dochter van mevrouw Doyle, de kokkin op kasteel Deverill. Ze hebben dezelfde leeftijd en Adeline maakt er geen punt van dat Kitty en Bridie vriendinnen zijn ondanks het klasse verschil. Ze hebben de tijd van hun leven en samen met Jack O’Leary steken ze kattenkwaad uit. Haar nichtje Celia brengt de zomers ook door op het kasteel. Zij woont met haar familie in Londen maar ze vinden het geweldig om naar Ierland te komen tijdens de zomer.
De Deverills zijn Anglo-Iers en het is een kleine gemeenschap en iedereen kent elkaar. Generatie na generatie hadden ze samen opgetrokken. Ze zijn zeer trouw aan de Kroon. Door de veranderingen in Ierland ziet het ernaar uit dat hun gemeenschap is gedoemd om te verdwijnen. De familie Doyle werkt voor de Deverills maar achter gesloten deuren willen ze de Britse protestanten het land uit hebben. In hun ogen hebben ze hun cultuur, geschiedenis, taal en manier van leven afgenomen.
Naarmate Kitty, Bridie en Jack ouder worden, verergert de toestand in hun land. Er zijn schermutselingen gaande en de situatie is weinig stabiel. Kitty’s moeder en haar zussen vertrekken naar Londen maar Kitty wil van geen wijken weten en blijft op het kasteel. Ze voelt zich Iers in hart en nieren en ze weet zeker dat zij en haar familie geen gevaar zullen lopen. Kitty is gelukkig nu haar moeder weg is. Gedaan met de gespannen sfeer in huis. Bridie maakt promotie en wordt kamenier van Kitty. Op die manier is haar oma er zeker van dat haar kleindochter nog altijd iemand heeft met wie ze kan praten. Omdat Kitty nu veertien jaar oud is krijgt ze ook privélessen van Mr. Trench.
Bridie heeft het naar haar zin op het kasteel maar ze moet wel heel hard werken en ze mist haar thuis. Bridie had hier ook mee een plan opgezet voor haar. Ze zou met Kitty mee naar Londen gaan als ze achttien wordt. Kitty was voor haar een kans op een beter leven. Want als ze volwassen is wil ze weg en als een dame terugkeren en niet hoeven te werken zoals haar moeder nu moet doen.
Dan breekt WO I uit en de tijden worden anders. Niet alleen wordt er op het continent gevochten maar er breekt een opstand uit in Ierland. Jack maakt Kitty duidelijk dat ze bij de vijand hoort maar zij ziet dit helemaal anders. Hoe meer ze leert over de Ierse geschiedenis, hoe meer het patriottisch vuur in haar wordt aangewakkerd. Ze ziet zichzelf als Ierse. En ze ziet een toekomst met Jack voor zich. Maar er is nog iemand die een oogje heeft op Jack.
Als de oorlog gedaan is zijn er verkiezingen en de radicale Sinn Féin behaalt een verpletterende overwinning. Kitty is nu negentien jaar en wil nog steeds van geen wijken weten. Ze is in de volle overtuiging dat ze Ierse is en dat ze niks met haar gaan doen.
Naïef en volhardend als ze is, doet ze dingen die de ene na de andere gebeurtenis in gang zetten en zo voltrekt er iets dat verschrikkelijk is en waar ze geen vat meer op heeft. Hier moet ze een prijs voor betalen, eentje met verstrekkende gevolgen. Ook Bridies leven ligt overhoop en beiden zijn gedoemd om te vluchten. De ene naar Londen en de andere naar Amerika.
Zullen Kitty en Bridie ooit elkaar nog terug zien? Kan Kitty alsnog naar haar geliefde Ierland terugkeren waar haar hart en ziel ligt? Wat gebeurt er met kasteel Deverill?
Conclusie
Dit boek bestaat uit drie delen. Het begint in 1910 en stopt in 1925. Het eerste deel schetst een beeld hoe Kitty en Bridie leven, wie hun familie zijn en hoe ze met elkaar omgaan.
In deel twee wordt Kitty geleidelijk aan volwassen. Ze is heel intelligent en weet wat ze wil. Ook de toenemende haat van de Ieren wordt goed uit de doeken gedaan. Zowel bij de gewone bevolking als bij de Deverills vallen er slachtoffers tijdens WO I. Kitty is hopeloos verliefd maar kan deze relatie stand houden en wat met Bridie die zo ook haar toekomstplannen heeft maar het anders uitpakt als ze had gehoopt.
Deel drie gaat verder met het verhaal als Kitty naar Londen moet vluchten en Bridie die in Amerika zit. Kitty probeert daar een leven op te bouwen met de hulp van haar nichtje Celia en haar broer is ook meer aanwezig in dit deel. Ook hier wordt Kitty’s leven overschaduwd door haar gemis van haar geliefde Ierland.
Santa heeft de levens van al de personages mooi in beeld gebracht. Je wordt meegesleurd naar een andere tijd met enerzijds de pracht en praal van de adel en anderzijds de arme bevolking die het beu is om onder de juk van de Britten te leven. Vriendschappen die worden gesloten en waarvan iedereen zo overtuigd is dat die stand gaan houden. Je leest alsof je er gewoon allemaal naar zit te kijken.
Het is niet alleen een zeemzoete roman maar ook een verhaal waar veel verdriet in zit; de burgeroorlog speelt hier een grote rol in het verhaal dat levens uit elkaar trekt en waar ook onschuldige slachtoffers vallen en dat heeft Santa goed neergepend. Zo krijg je als dusdanig een les geschiedenis over Ierland.
Er passeren zoveel personages de revue dat het niet mogelijk is om hen allemaal te vernoemen. De levens van alle personages worden met elkaar verweven en gaan op een bepaald moment elk hun eigen weg om dan aan het einde van het boek terug samen te komen.
Santa heeft ook oog voor het ruige Ierland met al zijn pracht en praal, fauna en flora en dat weet ze ook zo beeldend te omschrijven. Je waant je als het ware op het Ierse platteland en de ruige kustlijn.
De auteur heeft veel emoties in dit verhaal gestoken en dit laat je niet onberoerd. Het is ontroerend maar meteen heel aangrijpend. Er is ook een soort spanning in het verhaal verweven die blijft stijgen en die je ook verrast. Je probeert zelf al te raden wat er gaat komen maar dan heeft ze nog een verrassing in petto die je niet ziet aankomen. Alle componenten zitten in het verhaal: van liefde en haat, vriendschap en verraad, van familiebanden en eer tot zoals gewoonlijk de vele geheimen die er in een familie zijn.
Dit boek is het eerste deel van een familie saga en het smaakt naar meer. Je moet gewoon weten hoe het er in het tweede deel aan toe zal gaan want een happy end heeft deze roman zeker niet. Ondergetekende hoeft niet op haar honger te blijven zitten want deel 2 ligt klaar om te lezen. Heel benieuwd hoe het verder gaat met Kitty Deverill en aanverwanten.
Als je van de stijl van Kate Morton houdt dan zal dit boek je ook zeker bekoren!

Kitty’s boezemvriendin en trouwe bondgenoot is Bridie. Zij is de dochter van mevrouw Doyle, de kokkin op kasteel Deverill. Ze hebben dezelfde leeftijd en Adeline maakt er geen punt van dat Kitty en Bridie vriendinnen zijn ondanks het klasse verschil. Ze hebben de tijd van hun leven en samen met Jack O’Leary steken ze kattenkwaad uit. Haar nichtje Celia brengt de zomers ook door op het kasteel. Zij woont met haar familie in Londen maar ze vinden het geweldig om naar Ierland te komen tijdens de zomer.
De Deverills zijn Anglo-Iers en het is een kleine gemeenschap en iedereen kent elkaar. Generatie na generatie hadden ze samen opgetrokken. Ze zijn zeer trouw aan de Kroon. Door de veranderingen in Ierland ziet het ernaar uit dat hun gemeenschap is gedoemd om te verdwijnen. De familie Doyle werkt voor de Deverills maar achter gesloten deuren willen ze de Britse protestanten het land uit hebben. In hun ogen hebben ze hun cultuur, geschiedenis, taal en manier van leven afgenomen.
Naarmate Kitty, Bridie en Jack ouder worden, verergert de toestand in hun land. Er zijn schermutselingen gaande en de situatie is weinig stabiel. Kitty’s moeder en haar zussen vertrekken naar Londen maar Kitty wil van geen wijken weten en blijft op het kasteel. Ze voelt zich Iers in hart en nieren en ze weet zeker dat zij en haar familie geen gevaar zullen lopen. Kitty is gelukkig nu haar moeder weg is. Gedaan met de gespannen sfeer in huis. Bridie maakt promotie en wordt kamenier van Kitty. Op die manier is haar oma er zeker van dat haar kleindochter nog altijd iemand heeft met wie ze kan praten. Omdat Kitty nu veertien jaar oud is krijgt ze ook privélessen van Mr. Trench.
Bridie heeft het naar haar zin op het kasteel maar ze moet wel heel hard werken en ze mist haar thuis. Bridie had hier ook mee een plan opgezet voor haar. Ze zou met Kitty mee naar Londen gaan als ze achttien wordt. Kitty was voor haar een kans op een beter leven. Want als ze volwassen is wil ze weg en als een dame terugkeren en niet hoeven te werken zoals haar moeder nu moet doen.
Dan breekt WO I uit en de tijden worden anders. Niet alleen wordt er op het continent gevochten maar er breekt een opstand uit in Ierland. Jack maakt Kitty duidelijk dat ze bij de vijand hoort maar zij ziet dit helemaal anders. Hoe meer ze leert over de Ierse geschiedenis, hoe meer het patriottisch vuur in haar wordt aangewakkerd. Ze ziet zichzelf als Ierse. En ze ziet een toekomst met Jack voor zich. Maar er is nog iemand die een oogje heeft op Jack.
Als de oorlog gedaan is zijn er verkiezingen en de radicale Sinn Féin behaalt een verpletterende overwinning. Kitty is nu negentien jaar en wil nog steeds van geen wijken weten. Ze is in de volle overtuiging dat ze Ierse is en dat ze niks met haar gaan doen.
Naïef en volhardend als ze is, doet ze dingen die de ene na de andere gebeurtenis in gang zetten en zo voltrekt er iets dat verschrikkelijk is en waar ze geen vat meer op heeft. Hier moet ze een prijs voor betalen, eentje met verstrekkende gevolgen. Ook Bridies leven ligt overhoop en beiden zijn gedoemd om te vluchten. De ene naar Londen en de andere naar Amerika.
Zullen Kitty en Bridie ooit elkaar nog terug zien? Kan Kitty alsnog naar haar geliefde Ierland terugkeren waar haar hart en ziel ligt? Wat gebeurt er met kasteel Deverill?
Conclusie
Dit boek bestaat uit drie delen. Het begint in 1910 en stopt in 1925. Het eerste deel schetst een beeld hoe Kitty en Bridie leven, wie hun familie zijn en hoe ze met elkaar omgaan.
In deel twee wordt Kitty geleidelijk aan volwassen. Ze is heel intelligent en weet wat ze wil. Ook de toenemende haat van de Ieren wordt goed uit de doeken gedaan. Zowel bij de gewone bevolking als bij de Deverills vallen er slachtoffers tijdens WO I. Kitty is hopeloos verliefd maar kan deze relatie stand houden en wat met Bridie die zo ook haar toekomstplannen heeft maar het anders uitpakt als ze had gehoopt.
Deel drie gaat verder met het verhaal als Kitty naar Londen moet vluchten en Bridie die in Amerika zit. Kitty probeert daar een leven op te bouwen met de hulp van haar nichtje Celia en haar broer is ook meer aanwezig in dit deel. Ook hier wordt Kitty’s leven overschaduwd door haar gemis van haar geliefde Ierland.
Santa heeft de levens van al de personages mooi in beeld gebracht. Je wordt meegesleurd naar een andere tijd met enerzijds de pracht en praal van de adel en anderzijds de arme bevolking die het beu is om onder de juk van de Britten te leven. Vriendschappen die worden gesloten en waarvan iedereen zo overtuigd is dat die stand gaan houden. Je leest alsof je er gewoon allemaal naar zit te kijken.
Het is niet alleen een zeemzoete roman maar ook een verhaal waar veel verdriet in zit; de burgeroorlog speelt hier een grote rol in het verhaal dat levens uit elkaar trekt en waar ook onschuldige slachtoffers vallen en dat heeft Santa goed neergepend. Zo krijg je als dusdanig een les geschiedenis over Ierland.
Er passeren zoveel personages de revue dat het niet mogelijk is om hen allemaal te vernoemen. De levens van alle personages worden met elkaar verweven en gaan op een bepaald moment elk hun eigen weg om dan aan het einde van het boek terug samen te komen.
Santa heeft ook oog voor het ruige Ierland met al zijn pracht en praal, fauna en flora en dat weet ze ook zo beeldend te omschrijven. Je waant je als het ware op het Ierse platteland en de ruige kustlijn.
De auteur heeft veel emoties in dit verhaal gestoken en dit laat je niet onberoerd. Het is ontroerend maar meteen heel aangrijpend. Er is ook een soort spanning in het verhaal verweven die blijft stijgen en die je ook verrast. Je probeert zelf al te raden wat er gaat komen maar dan heeft ze nog een verrassing in petto die je niet ziet aankomen. Alle componenten zitten in het verhaal: van liefde en haat, vriendschap en verraad, van familiebanden en eer tot zoals gewoonlijk de vele geheimen die er in een familie zijn.
Dit boek is het eerste deel van een familie saga en het smaakt naar meer. Je moet gewoon weten hoe het er in het tweede deel aan toe zal gaan want een happy end heeft deze roman zeker niet. Ondergetekende hoeft niet op haar honger te blijven zitten want deel 2 ligt klaar om te lezen. Heel benieuwd hoe het verder gaat met Kitty Deverill en aanverwanten.
Als je van de stijl van Kate Morton houdt dan zal dit boek je ook zeker bekoren!

Canciones de amor y guerra me ha parecido un maravilloso inicio de saga familiar, y estoy deseando continuar con la historia, la cual me ha conquistado, al igual que los personajes y la majestuosa ambientación. La pluma de la autora es bellísima y la historia se quedará contigo mucho tiempo.

I loved this, a family saga that starts in 1910 in Ireland and then takes us to London and New York before returning home to Ireland fifteen years later. And best of all, it's the first book in a trilogy; can't wait to see what happens next!
Just a little point, but the American title of The Girl in the Castle suits it so much better than the British title Songs of Love and War.

I usually love historical fiction of this ilk, but this book moved slower than molasses running uphill in January. It was incredibly boring, and I really didn't enjoy any of the characters, with the exception of the Shrub sisters. I found this book very tedious, was not invested as a reader, even after plodding along, completely did not care what happened to any of them. Pass

Als je de facebookposts over Santa Montefiore haar boeken bekijkt zijn het meestal de dames die ze lezen. Maar sporadisch duikt er ook wel eens een mannelijke lezer op. Zoals mezelf.
Zo las ik De vrouwen van kasteel Deverill. Het eerste boek in de Deverill reeks.
Verhaal
Kitty Deverill heeft het meeste contact met haar grootmoeder bij wie ze de liefde vind die ze zoekt. Met een afstandelijke moeder en een ongeïnteresseerde vader, die het kasteel ontvlucht door te jagen of naar zijn maîtresse gaat, is dit haar enige kans op affectie. Haar grootmoeder vertelt verhalen over vorige generaties Deverill en de geschiedenis van het kasteel. Het leven in het ruige Ierland. Ondanks hun verschil in afkomst komt Kitty is er een innige vriendschap met Bridie. De dochter van de kokkin. En haar nicht Celia, die in Londen woont en haar zomers in Ierland verblijft, maakt het vriendengroepje compleet.
De eerste Wereldoorlog en de strijd voor onafhankelijkheid doen de spanningen toenemen en zo komt er een einde aan de onbezorgde jaren van het trio vriendinnen. Hun ooit zo hechte band dreigt verbroken te worden. Maar hun verlangen naar kasteel Deverill zal hen altijd blijven verbinden.
Mijn gedacht
Ondanks de vermelding van vele lezers dat ze direct meegezogen waren in het verhaal duurde het hier wat langer. Er was wat tijd nodig om alle personages te leren kennen en in het verhaal te groeien.
Eens je mee bent met het verhaal leest het boek enorm vlot. Je leeft enorm mee met Kitty en haar familie. Er is een paranormaal tintje dat een extra laagje over het verhaal legt. Dat tintje verbindt ook bepaalde personages met elkaar.
Montefiore slaagt er terug in om de ruige natuur van Ierland zodanig te omschrijven zodat er de goesting is om direct naar daar te vertrekken op reis.
Maar de gebeurtenissen rond de onafhankelijkheid van Ierland wordt zeer goed in beeld gebracht.
Het slot
Montefiore slaagt erin om je op het einde van het verhaal toch nog een loer te draaien. Er is de aanleiding naar een gebeurtenis waarna ze je toch nog verrast met een onverwachte wending. Op deze manier wordt je getriggerd om het vervolgdeel ook nog te gaan lezen.
Conclusie
Een verhaal waar ik niet direct in zat. Maar naarmate het vordert nam het leestempo meer en meer toe. De interesse naar de personages groeide met elke gelezen hoofdstuk. Zeer goed geschreven met aandacht voor detail ten opzichte van de Ierse natuur.

Despite their differences in origin, Kitty develops a close friendship with Bridie. The cook's daughter. And her cousin Celia, who lives in London and spends her summers in Ireland, she completes the group of friends.
The First World War and the struggle for independence increases tensions and thus the carefree years of the trio of girlfriends comes to an end. Their once so close bond is about to be broken. But their longing for Castle Deverill will always connect them.
My thought
Despite the mention of many readers that they were immediately sucked into the story, it took a little longer here. It took some time to get to know all the characters and grow into the story.
Once you get along with the story, the book is very easy to read. You sympathize with Kitty and her family. There is a paranormal touch that adds an extra layer to the story. That touch also connects certain characters.
Montefiore succeeds again in describing the rugged nature of Ireland in such a way that there is the desire to immediately leave for a trip there.
But the events surrounding Ireland's independence are portrayed very well.
The end
Montefiore manages to trick you at the end of the story. There is the trigger to an event after which she still surprises you with an unexpected turn. This way you will be triggered to read the sequel as well.
Conclusion
A story I was not immediately into. But as it progressed, the pace of reading increased more and more. Interest in the characters grew with each chapter read. Very well written with attention to detail relative to Irish nature.
