He’s arrogant.
Loud.
Rude.
And to make matters worse, he looks good doing it—too good.

Joey DeLuca should have been nothing but a maddening memory, a blip on my radar during my three month sabbatical in my small hometown while I get back on my feet.

My time back home was supposed to be simple. Easy. Fast.

But he’s everywhere I go, invading my thoughts, and stealing my attention.

Is it possible to hate the same person I can’t get enough of?

Is there really an exception to every rule?

Exception is a story about finding ones self, finding love, and remembering there really is no place like home.

Kennedy Wallace has done her best in Boston, but finding a teaching job isn’t as easy as it seems. Even though it’s been years since she graduated college, she hasn’t found anything that stuck. Her finical situation is grim, so she decides to come home for a few months and stay with her parents, work at their store, save some money, and get her life back on track. It’s not ideal, but it’s whats best for her at this point.

Kennedy knows about everyone in her small town. That’s the thing about small towns, and she is Haven Point’s sweetheart. What she doesn’t expect is to meet someone like Joey DeLuca her fist day back. Joey is a pain in her ass, but there is something about the guy… Although Exception can easily be read as a stand-alone, if you’ve read Dietz’s Curveball, you’re in for a treat. Joey is none other than Joey DeLuca, Coen’s older brother. I loved getting so much of Coen and Ella in this story!

When Joey and Kennedy first meet, sparks fly. Even though they have a bit of a rub, you can tell by their banter and chemistry there is something there. Kennedy is resistant to explore it knowing she will only be in town temporarily, and at first so is Joey, as he’s only in Haven Point for a short while to help Coen. With time, though, these two can’t keep their hands off each other. It took a while for their relationship to develop, this was very much a slow burn romance, but once it did, it was worth the wait!

Exception is a sweet small town romance I adored. Both Kennedy and Joey were great characters and I loved Kennedy’s best friend, Violet. I would LOVE to get a Violet book with someone from Haven Point!

EXCEPTION: Is BOOK#2 within the ‘Heaven Point Duet’ by Mariah Dietz ‘Curveball’ BOOK#1 was Coen and Ella’s story but to understand this you don’t have to read the previous book as they do cross over into this one. Spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’

In this we meet Twenty seven year old Kennedy Wallace and Thirty-three year old Joey DeLuca.

What Kennedy didn't expect in life was to be moving back into the family home at Haven Point Virginia with her parents and sibling but it's the only choice she has to get her finances back on track and to pay off looming student loans from her degree even though many moons have sailed since she graduated top of her class in college, she hasn't been able to find any suitable teaching jobs in Boston. But she vows it's only temporary, she'll work at the families hardware store, save money and get her life back on track until a job pops up in Boston.

Being Haven Points 'Sweet Heart' she feels like she's failed at adulting having to come back with her tail between her legs after many years of being away.

Detective Joey has been pulled off a high profile case due to becoming too consumed by it and has been roped into helping his younger brother Coen renovate his new home in Haven Point (if you've read Curveball you would've met Coen and Ella in that).

When Kennedy and Joey do officially meet, sparks fly, he thinks she looks like a librarian and she thinks he's just an ass.

You're different," I tell her. "You're like those Sour Patch candies, when one bite is so sweet and the rest is so sour.

it doesn't take long until your falling in love with the small town of Haven Point and the locals who call it home. I enjoyed the sibling banter between Coen and Joey and loved the fierce protective love Kennedy felt towards her sister (and I'm praying to the book gods that we get her story). I think the author also dealt with mental illness sensitvely as she could've.

This was such awesome way to kick start the new year off with, new author to me, new characters I enjoyed reading about. So many dimensions to this book, roll over characters, mental illness, likeable relatable characters, definitely a one click recommendation from me!! The only reason this gets marked down a star is towards the end I found it a wee bit rushed.

DNF at 47%.

Joey DeLuca is an irritating, annoying, rude, arrogant, FBI agent currently on leave. He’s come to this small town to help his brother, Coen, remodel his house and help him get settled in his new life. I did like Coen, his fiancé and her son.

Kennedy Wallace has returned home to live with her parents and work in their hardware store. She’s been unable to find a job in Boston with her teaching degree, is broke and needs to regroup and save some money.

Kennedy’s dad was constantly making mean comments and eroding her already low self-confidence, in public and at home. He didn’t care who heard his opinion of her. Her parents were also busy ignoring and downplaying her sister’s mental illness.

When Joey and Kennedy initially meet, it’s in her parents hardware store where he is bad-mouthing small town living and the inadequacies of the store. I never felt any connection between these two.

This book moves so s-l-o-w. It is depressing and boring. I picked it up and put it down so many times I lost count. I kept pushing myself to read a little more hoping it would pick up or appear to be going somewhere. Nope. Ugh!!

I voluntarily read an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.

I honestly didn't know what to expect while reading Exception. The fact that this story and these characters hit me deeply in the feels department was surprising. The only thing I knew for sure was that this was Joey's book. If you've read Curveball you know that Joey is Coen's older brother. Both books are about different couples, so you don't have to read Curveball to read Exception, but I definitely recommend you do. Why? Because Coen!!!!! Coen is just *heart eyes* Alright, back to Exception.

Exception was a story about discovering your true self and living without fears.

Kennedy Wallace has done the best she can do living away from home. But finding a decent job has been harder than she thought. When she left her small town she was destined for bigger and better. Voted most likely to succeed from her fellow peers in high school has made Kennedy want to achieve that and more. But her financial situation has become grim. So she decides to move back home for a couple of months and stay with her parents and help them out with their hardware store. She wants to save some money and get her life on track before deciding what to do. It's not what Kennedy wanted, but it's what's best.

Detective Joey DeLuca has seen better days. Taken off a very important case, Joey needs to clear his head, and what better way to do that than to visit his brother and help him remodel his new house. And in a trip to the towns hardware store he spots Kennedy. And let's just say their first meeting wasn't exactly smooth.

It was no surprise that Kennedy and Joey had chemistry. And their back and forth banter made it extra fun for when they finally gave in to their feelings. I relished their arguments because they were silly and brought the laughs. They were stubborn, but it was only because they didn't want to get hurt. But when they finally let each other in and break down the walls they had built it was exactly the way it was supposed to be.

“You could have passed me in the busiest city, during the busiest hour, with sirens blaring in the middle of a hailstorm, and I would’ve noticed you.”

Mariah, please tell me you're writing a book for Grace! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I need to know more about her story. I hurt for her so much, and I don't want to say goodbye without knowing certain things. *fingers crossed* for a Grace's book.

Exception is a cute, small town romance that will have you full of the warm and fuzzies in no time. For those that have read Curveball, you may recognise a few of the secondary characters as the hero in this book is none other than Joey DeLuca, Coen's brother.

Mariah Dietz, is always on point with romance and with a little love/hate in the first instance, the dialogue between these two will have you screaming for them to get down and dirty. The banter between these two is fantastic and despite the back and forth Mariah Dietz made sure that their connection and chemistry was prevalent throughout.

Joey, as I mentioned above is Coen's brother, he is in the police force and is on a forced break, so is helping Coen renovate his house. Kennedy is born and bred Haven Point but has spent the past chuck of her life in Boston, getting her degree and trying to find a job that can pay off her student loans. Without success, she comes back to Haven Point in a foul mood, feeling the failure as moving back in with mum and dad becomes her reality.

As I said above, I loved these two with a passion as love is neither what each of them was looking for, but is the one thing they both found. Love comes when you least expect it and it is up to you whether you embrace it with both arms, or run the other way.

This book is extremely slow. Not a whole lot happens even up to the the 60% mark, which is where I decided that I was completely bored and lost interest.

Although this started out slow for me, it eventually picks up with a story focused on family and romance. Joey and Kennedy get off to a bumpy start, but soon find solace in each other as they navigate major changes in their lives. I liked that this romance was a slow burn. There was no insta-love and a lot of the plot revolves around their families (Joey's brother is Coen from Curveball, and Kennedy's family is dealing with some mental health issues).

I loved Kennedy's best friend, Violet, and would love to see her get her own book. Here's hoping Dietz continues on with this fun and thoughtful series.

4 “Jelly Bean” stars!

Graduating at the top of her class with honors and dual degrees, Kennedy Wallace had big dreams for her future. Moving out of her small home town and getting a great job was supposed to jumpstart her life, especially since she had everything she thought she needed to succeed. Ten years later, Kennedy isn’t where she had expected. She doesn’t have a well-paying job despite her qualifications, she’s left wanting more than a no-strings-attached relationship, and she can’t pay her rent. Reluctantly, she heads home to live with her parents in hopes of making some money from subletting her small one-bedroom apartment in Boston. Her plan is to stay in Haven Point, Virginia for a few months until she gets back on her feet. But you know what they say about best laid plans…

Joey DeLuca is a detective in DC; however, after he gets too invested in a case, he is forced to take a step back. During his leave, he visits his brother in Haven Point. When he first meets Kennedy there is an instant attraction no matter how much they deny it. Neither have plans for a relationship but they can't seem to stay away from each other and as they open up to one another, so do their feelings.

Exception is a story about letting go of fear, learning to trust, and finding love when you least expect it. Throw in two complicated characters and you get a whole lot of messy before things get better. It is more emotional and deeper than I expected but it has moments of fun banter that helps lighten the heavy themes.

In the beginning, you think you know where the story is going. But as it unravels it becomes more complex with every layer. The characters are well-developed and my heart hurt for what they go through.

Kennedy is defeated. Her self-doubt is devastating but she is determined to figure out her life. It takes going home and facing things head on to help her grow and learn what is important to her. She is feisty and funny especially when she stands her ground. She wasn’t easily intimidated by the sexy detective that seemed to be everywhere she looked and there was something about him that called to her. She doesn’t expect him to get under her skin but he does. I loved that Joey opened her eyes to what she wanted and offered his support even when they hit a lot of bumps in the road.
“Life isn’t about being comfortable. It’s supposed to hurt. If it were painless and easy, we’d forget why we fight so hard to live.”

Joey is great at his job but he takes it home with him and can’t separate work from life. It's understandable that everything he sees as a detective makes him skeptical of everyone around him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t usually see the good in people, leading him to act like a jerk a lot of the time. It takes him a long time to learn to trust and Kennedy is the stepping stones of his progress.
“You were right when you said it’s hard for me to trust people. Somedays it feels damn near impossible, and for some godforsaken reason, you just seem to bypass every single one of my barriers, and you’ve become my exception to literally everything.”

Kennedy affects him like no one else and he feels a pull toward her. His feelings are strong but he can’t always accept them. I loved watching him fall for her and wanting so much more than just another hook-up.
I want to know her past, and more than that, I want to be written into the Chapters of her future.

Kennedy and Joey clash from the moment they meet. Both have misconceived notions and it’s not until they really get to know each other that they realize how wrong they were. I loved watching them get to know each other and the surprise moments they found at the pond. Their feelings grow and felt real yet it takes a while before they can find a routine that works for them. They don’t always know how to express their feelings and often times they say the wrong thing sending them two steps back for every one step forward creating heartache. I wanted them to work through the details of their relationship sooner, and though I understand where each are coming from, they both pushed more than I would have liked. Kennedy jumps from hot to cold a few too many times and Joey questions Kennedy’s feelings a bit too much. When the lightbulb goes off though, they are all in and I loved the way the story wrapped up.

I loved the secondary characters in this story. Curveball , the first book in the Haven Point series featuring Joey's younger brother was wonderful and I was so excited to get more of the DeLuca clan. Coen, Ella, and even Hayden are back and I enjoyed the parts they played in this story. It was so nice to catch up with them. Seeing the strength of the relationship between Joey and Coen made me happy and gave us good insight to how Joey is with the people he loves.

I also love Kennedy and Violet’s relationship and I couldn’t keep from wanting to be part of their little group. They’re so much fun together but still can be serious when they need to be. They offer unconditional support while being rational.

Grace and Kennedy have a unique relationship that is very emotional and my heart physically hurt when I learned of everything Grace went through. The fear was very real and I wanted to cry for them.

Overall, I enjoyed this emotional read and I hope there are new Haven Point books in the future because I would love more of the DeLuca family, Grace, and Violet!

I finished! I did not DNF it, liked I wanted it on so many occasions.
It starts out slow - both characters are extremely annoying, the heroine is still trying to find herself at 27 or 28 and the hero is a bit of an asshole at first. The heroine's whole family was off, I was hoping it will turn into a thriller.. I didn't see nor feel the connection between the two h/h, nor did I feel any romance bloom or develop.. it unfortunately felt like watching my neighbor cut his grass.. not exciting, not interesting..just there..

When you begin the story you are a little wary. Why? Kennedy seems to have a stubborn streak about Boston. Don’t get me wrong love Boston but her mind is dead set against going back home and her attitude shows it. She is adamant about her length of stay in Virginia. That isn’t to say I didn’t like her I did. I liked how she was devoted to her sister and loved her family and town. I loved her passion and honesty. I also loved how she helped keep Joey in line and helped him open up and find what mattered-love.

Her friend Ivy is a hoot. This is a city girl who falls in love with the small town. when she sees the sheep in the road she loved it and wanted video. Kennedy was exasperated. But I also think she was scared. She now had to face her fears, what she ran away from and herself. Her idea of life and failures is pretty heavy compared to others. she didn’t give herself an inch. Her dad didn’t either. Not because he didn’t love her but because he didn’t want Kennedy to have any regrets. Because she was smart and a go getter and he felt she would grow resentful of small town life.

Joey when you first meet him is sarcastic and biting. You understand why and can tell that he is burnt out but also very self assured and confident. he does suffer fools wisely. He is from the big italian family and boy is he a family guy. Underneath his confidence he is wary of others, protective of his family and very loyal. He is also a sweetheart. But his job has worn him down and tore him apart. He is a shell of himself protecting himself from the horrors he sees everyday at work. Despite his healthy ego you will gravitate to him immediately especially with how he gets Kennedy’s dander up. Also because of his heart and wisdom.

When he and Kennedy first meet. Not good. They don’t exactly hit it off. He is intrigued and loves to push her buttons and she is irritated. They keep seeing each other though and over time get to know one another and see behind the masks. The attraction is there and Joey acknowledges it, Kennedy takes time to. She is also dealing with family issues and Joey is there to help her with that as well. He is also her sounding board and teaches her through his support and wisdom, yes wisdom, to go with her passion and not be afraid to live and try but also embrace it and if you fail you fail. He helps her see sometimes failure helps you grow and learn but also is a success for it shows you a way to go.

Their story is filled with sarcaster banter, sweet moments in a pond, sexy times in a storm and watching two people explore an attraction and take a chance. We see them figure out where they belong and what they want. the romance is not instant. They go from goading one another, to learning about each other, friendship and than love. It is sexy and sweet. You see them support each other and give each other strength.

A story that is filled with sarcastic banter, wonderful family moments, two characters finding love and where they belong, a family finding their way back again to each other and friendship. It shows strength, courage and that the fear of failure shouldn’t rule your actions but be respected and not have it stop you from doing what you love. A wonderful continuation in the series and I can’t wait to see what is next for this set of characters.

Oh the burn, the very, very slow burn!! This story was very much in the wheel house of Mariah Dietz's other books with having strong, independent, female & male characters. Joey and Kennedy have this hate to love relationship mixed in with an emotional connection that draws you in and tugged at my heart. I did wish for a little more drama with some of the subjects that were mentioned but that climax just never came. Overall, I did enjoy the slow burn love story about a small town girl looking for her happy and the big city guy that has trust issues.

Exception by Mariah Dietz is the second book in the Heaven Point duet.
Book one, Curveball is Coen and Ella´s story.
Joey DeLuca is rude, loud, arrogant and should be nothing to her.
Kennedy Wallace is temporary back from Boston to live with her ´rents again. She can´t get the cop out of her head. Both are like catnip for each other. But both have issues and baggage that threatens to destroy their non-relaionship. I loved meeting the characters from Curveball, I love Ella, Coen and Hayden very much. I started reading and was sucked in Kennedy´s world. There are a few characters I didn´t like at all - no spoilers here - and some I liked very much, Violet you rock !
Exception gets exceptional 4 stars.

Received advanced copy off Netgalley for honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. I read the first in the series with Cohen and Ella, when I saw the invite to read this one that was about Cohen's broody but sexy brother Joey and the Feisty Kennedy I jumped.. I loved this series to date..
Kennedy has to come home for a couple months.. get finances in order then she is back off to Boston..
Joey is on leave from his job while investigations are going on.. he has decided no time like the present to help is bro out by helping remodel the house he and Ella have..
So when Joey and Cohen go to the local hardware store for supplies he is taken back by the feisty but guarded Kennedy.
Both have secrets, both have got trust issues. will these help or hurt what both of these two what?

Thank you for allowing me to read this book.. I really enjoyed it.

thanks to netgalley and Moriah Dietz for a copy for review.
Kennedy is the kind of girl who is hard on herself, who really judges herself on what others think of her. so when her life in Boston isn't going well, she decides to go home to Haven Point to regroup. She thinks this means she's a failure, so even though she loves her home town, she's determined to get back to Boston as soon as possible.
She's filling in at her parents hardware store when Joey Deluca comes in. You may remember him from Curveball- that book was about joey's brother Coen. Joey lives in DC, but is helping Coen build a house in town while he's on leave from the PD. He's arrogant and a bit rude and they dont hit it off very well- at first.
I loved that Kennedy was so independent, and that both Kennedy and Joey showed just how important family is. The small town was so easy to picture, it was almost a character itself. Violet was also a great character, and i hope she gets her own story.

What did I just read? There were absolutely O chemistry, feels, connection between Joey and Kennedy. They were just two strangers who argued a lot [tiresome arguments], swam at the pond a few times, had sex, clueless about their careers future[he was 35, a police detective but currently not on the force, she was 27, top of her graduation class, had a teacher's degree but not working as one]
There 2 stars? Yup, they were for Coen, Ella and Hayden. Btw, Ella and Coen were still living together as madly in love couple, why can't Ms.Dietz married them off??? The couple who had O chemistry+biology +physique [Joey and Kennedy]were engaged at the end of this story..
😭 I personally think that you'll not miss a single thing by skipping this book.

I really enjoyed the last book in this series, Curveball. I thought it was well-written, well-paced, and overall, I really loved the characters. I wish I could say the same for Exception. But…

I really didn’t care for the hero, Joey, at all. When he first meets the heroine, he’s being a total jackass, bad-mouthing her family’s hardware store and small towns in general. It’s totally uncalled for, petty and snobby, and I kind of wanted Coen (his brother and all-around awesome hero from Curveball) to beat the crap out of him. Then I wanted the heroine to knee the jerk in the nuts. It didn’t go down that way. I guess because Joey’s hot. Whatever. If he’d been a fat, homely dude with a paunchy belly and a comb-over I think everyone’s reaction to him wouldn’t have been as forgiving as it’s been among most reviewers. (It’s a sad fact in romance land that hot guys can get away with stuff that ugly guys just can’t.)

I didn’t mind Kennedy as a heroine. She was OK for the most part. At the beginning of the story, she’s fallen on some hard times and is leaving the big city to head back home to her childhood small town to mooch off her parents for a while and get back on her feet. I expected there to be some big reason why Kennedy felt she needed to get out of her small town to begin with and go into teaching when all she really wanted to do was open a bakery. As it turned out, there wasn’t really much reason for leaving in the first place. The town is charming, the people all adore her, and her family is mostly supportive (her dad is kind of a jerk, but no family’s perfect, I suppose). The fact that there really wasn’t any drama involved with Kennedy coming home, and she acclimated super quickly took me by surprise. I guess I just wanted...more of a story in the story, you know?

This is also a slow, slow, slow (did I mention slow) burn type of romance, with very little in the way of sexy times. I normally really enjoy a good slow burn, but this one was a little too slow, even for me.

Now, on the flip side, I did think Kennedy’s sister was super interesting. You don’t see too many heroines with mental illnesses in romance land, so if there’s a story in the works for Grace, I’m all in. I’ll 1-click the crap out of that one.

I also think the cover is super cool. This author likes to take chances with her covers and not go the traditional happy-couple-holding-hands-and-smiling-at-each-other or half-naked-hot-dude cover route. I totally dig her sense of style and adventurous spirit. If I were one to judge by covers alone, this one would’ve been a 5-star read for sure.

But long-story-short, this is the story of how a jerk and the town sweetheart (who everyone loves unconditionally, even though she’s kind of grumpy about being there at all) falling in love SUPER slowly. And they go swimming a lot. If that’s your kind of jam, 1-click away. But if you’re looking for more than that in the way of angst or story, you might be disappointed by this one.

People of the book world. Have you ever read a book where things touched you - but at the same time; things bugged you? This book was both fantastic and frustrating at the same time. I don't know if it was just because I thought things were going to go a certain way; but there were parts of this novel that touched my heart, rocked my socks and made me want to punt someone all at the same time.

I loved every single thing (okay, almost) about Kennedy. I mean even her name! She is head strong, she knows where she wants to end up in life - she has just hit a patch trying to get there. She seems to have spent a good part of her life settling just because she thought where she was is where she was meant to be. She is insanely loyal - which leads to most of the issues that seem to arise in her life. She has gotten herself into a situation she cannot seem to see any way out of and ultimately ends up back in her home town.. the one place she said she would never come back to once she left. The thing is, everyone there is happy to see her and asking her how long she plans to stay. The town has grown, the people have expanded and life has gone on in the little town she thought would never change.

Enter Joey Deluca. No one WANTS to end up hating the man who is suppose to win the girls heart. While hate is a strong bit of a word, I seriously disliked Deluca. There is a fine line between arrogant and alpha - and he crossed it just about every change he got. Over and over he showed us just why Kennedy shouldn't fall for him. While yes, he had his moments - to me they were not big enough to outshine all the insanity that seems to be just the person he is. He is rude, very arrogant, un-trusting and has the bad habit of blaming every single annoying habit of his on his job as a detective.

The story itself was a cute read and had some awesome parts. I loved the ends and out of the novel. I loved getting to know the characters and reading about how it all comes together. To me there just wasn't enough. I felt like some of the lines were overplayed, some of the issues were underplayed and some things just seemed to have been thrown in there to cause a little extra drama, but it just got slightly overwhelming with all the players in this novel.

The secondary characters were up there in my rating there. Joey's brother Coen, his fiancee and her little boy were awesome characters. I actually like Coen more than Joey. Kennedy's sister and parents were a big part of the novel as well, but I am still up in the air on her sister. That whole story lined bothered me just a little. I had such high hopes going into this novel and some if it just didn't do it for me. While this one might not have worked, I am very open to trying other novels from this author! Like I said - this is just my opinion so I def would want everyone to read it for themselves!

Exception is another wonderfully executed slow burn romance from Mariah Dietz. An unexpected kind of love between Kennedy Wallace and Joey Deluca that took them both by surprise but could very well be the best thing to happen for them both.

Each in the small town of Haven Point, Virginia, fully expecting to go back to their city lives in Boston and D.C. within a matter of weeks. Kennedy as the small town girl back home with her tail between her legs because she can't seem to find a good job in Boston and Joey as the jaded but always loyal older brother to Coen (his story was told in Curveball) who is on a required break from his position as a Detective in D.C. Together they are uncomfortable at their current lot in life and seem to bring out the worst in each other. Neither will back down whether it's at her parents's store or at the pond she so fondly loves and the sparks are flying whether they want to admit it or not.

I loved that these two took their time and managed to figure out that perhaps staying in a loving small town and grasping the truth that they not only are attracted to each other but bring out the very best even when they feel otherwise, may just be the perfect ending for them both. Joey is one tough dude but the affection he has for his family warmed my heart. And Kennedy is a fighter and I felt for her as she doesn't know how to help her sister Grace when she is plagued so often with confusion. But there is a true love between the sisters and their parents just want what's best for both of them.

The addition of some crazy country characters who can't help but call their beloved Kennedy, Jellybean, rounded out a great story. Violet makes the perfect best friend to Kennedy and I'm glad she doesn't want to leave her bestie's side.

I do hope there is more since I have some unanswered questions wrt Grace and Ethan and wouldn't mind a love interest for Violet in Jackson.

Another wonderful read from an author I'm just getting to know, loving all of her words immensely.

5 solid stars!

Kennedy used to love her small town of Haven Point, but upon returning home from Boston after a failed attempt at independence, she is full of dread about all of the "big city girl" comments that actively separate her from the community. Joey, on the other hand, is in Haven Point solely to help his brother and his wife renovate their new house. While he's been in the town before for detective work, his experience in the field has left him jaded, refusing to believe that the kind-hearted folk around him are actually that kind. After some negative interactions with Kennedy (one in which she accidentally hit his car), he's not ready to give up his stance. Even if she is beautiful. And interesting. And fun to text. And even if they did end up kissing in her secret pond. Oh, who is he kidding? Getting stuck in a storm together is the best thing that's ever happened to him!

I was fascinated by how this book set out to explain what being bipolar could look like, through the lens of Kennedy with her older sister, Grace. It made for some scary moments in which you'd think that things were going to get crazy. While part of me may have wanted something crazier to happen, I'm honestly glad that it didn't, and instead focused on the highs and lows, setbacks and accomplishments. It added a layer to Kennedy's understanding of love and sense of home, and it was something that Joey got to see firsthand, which also added a layer to their relationship. They were both shown to be caring toward their siblings, as well as facing too much heartache from their respective life experiences and job stress. All in all, I was very glad that this book had a FANTASTIC best friend, unlike the last--I don't know how much more I could have taken!

Joey and Kennedy's story is about feeling out of place and realizing where your dreams lie. It's about learning to accept that quitting something shouldn't come as a disappointment, but as another open door. This was a great enemies-to-lovers where the two continued to fight despite the clarity of their attraction.

A moving story of two people who can't seem to find their home until they find each other. These are two of the most stubborn characters I've read in quite some time. Joey is the gruff detective on administrative leave dealing with a case he got too close to and made unwise decisions. Kennedy is the push-over who left her home town searching for herself only to be knocked down by the dream she had and has come back home to regroup.

Joey and Kennedy do not start off on good ground and fight each other from the minute they meet. Kennedy was already on the defensive having to move back to her home-town and Joey was on the defensive because of his job situation. Once their enemy situation turns up the fire-works enough to cause an epic explosion of lust, they start on a journey of finding themselves, each other and where their home really is.

Although there was some back and forth between these two characters, it was just enough to show their vulnerabilities and not enough to be annoying for the reader. Joey and Kennedy both had a good home life and siblings they loved. That's honestly why both of them were in Haven Point, supporting their siblings and trying to find themselves again. You'll hopefully remember Coen and Ella from Curve Ball since this is the town they both moved to as well and why Joey is in town.

This story also touches a bit on a few darker issues, but deals with them in a more gentle way and is not overly descriptive except to explain the situation, which is so very heartbreaking. You'll find yourself rooting for all these characters in the end.

There are so many other characters that have a story to tell in Haven Point. I sure hope the author follows-up with stories for the other characters we've met in Exception.

I'm 100% sure I'm a not an exception between the people who fell in love with this story.

And how could I be? If the words written in the pages grab you from the moment you start reading and don't let go because of how good and flawless they are.

The storyline is so interesting and keeps you at the edge of your sit trying to figure out how it will all fall in the right place or if it will. And of course you are so focused on other details of the plot that you don't even notice the curveballs heading your way, and when they hit you, you are blown away about how impressive the whole thing is.

Joey and Kennedy met on the most regular circumstances but a couple of their next encounters weren't so normal. They are both trying to understand what's happening bewteen then because there is a constant pull that brings them together without them being conscious about it. It's like they gravitate towards each other with the need to know more of the other, and it's in those moments that the connection between them leaves you breathless wainting for more. Because it's not just atraccion, or just a friendship. Their chemistry is so much more and far beyond that and it makes an appearance even when they are not together because of their minds being occupied by the other.

They are so good together, they help each other, are supportive of the other one and bring the best of each other too. They make an unexpected impact on each other's live, while being on a journey of self discovery, forgiveness and trying to understand what they want for their future and how the decisions they make will change everything.

Full of meaning, sweet and perfect.

I did some beta reading on this book and I have to say when picking up the final copy I was pleasantly surprised the changes the author made in this book!! They made a huge difference in not only character development but in the flow of the story. And in the best way!!

Haven Point is quickly becoming a favorite place of mine. And not just because of the DeLuca boys. ;) I love a good, small town setting. Maybe it's because I live that life everyday and these stories give me hope but they have a place in my heart nothing will ever replace.

Although I didn't quite enjoy this book as much as Curveball I still enjoyed this one. Kennedy is the perfect balance of carefree and smart, sassy but respectful, loving but cautious. Her love for her family and friends, especially her sister and best friend pours out of the pages of this book. The parts with her sister about broke me and I applaud Mariah for taking on not one but two very tough subjects with the grace she did.

Joey. Oh Joey. I don't know what to say about him really. His job has made trusting people extremely difficult for understandable reasons but at times I wanted to smack him upside the head, kind of like his mama would have done. But boy did he make me smile. Under that untrusting layer is a good-hearted man that just wants to keep everyone safe from the horrors of this world.

If you're looking for a great book about family, friendship and love then Exception is for you. Because if life teaches us anything, there is exceptions to everything and sometimes those can make your life better.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
This Havens Point book follows Kennedy and Joey through their dance to become a couple.  Joey is the brother of Coen who you met or will meet in Curveball.  Joey is a police detective who's on vacation helping his brother move to a new town for his new Fire Chief position.

Small towns are not Joey's thing.  There's not a whole lot to do and everyone's in your business.  Of course a detective is always suspicious of everyone.  So when he meets Kennedy in her family's hardware store they two didn't hit it off to say the least.  You could say they both had snarky moments.

Intrigued by this woman named Kennedy. Joey still fights with his urge to flee the small town in order to get to know her better.  Meanwhile, Kennedy is fighting her own demons.  She's moved home to save money to move back to Boston.  She's sure everyone's talking about her as small towns often do, and she's not welcoming the thought.

Not to mention there's this annoying guy in town that intrigues but also puts her hackles up every time they're in the same place together.

These two don't have a long road to hoe but they do have quite a few obstacles to overcome. Not everything is as it seems.  You know what happens when you assume, right?  Yeah, well that definitely rings true with Kennedy and Joey.

I think you'll enjoy their love story.  There's some social issues mentioned in this book.  There's trials they both have to over come.  It's all worth it in the end, however.  That's the sweetest spot.

Sometimes you have to go back to the place you spent your life trying to escape to find your way. Kennedy Wallace is in love with Boston but Boston has not been so nice to her. She finds her self at a crossroads that puts her back at home with her parents. Haven Point is a small town that everyone knows everyone and Kennedy said goodbye to a long time ago.
While Kennedy has known everyone in Haven Point her whole life there are a few new faces in town. ( If you haven’t read Curveball yet I definitely recommend but isn’t necessary however we do get the characters we fell in love with ) She can’t seem to stop running into Joey DeLuca and although there is some definite chemistry ( you can definitely see the sparks flying) he is cocky and has an ego the size of Haven Point . Joey is in town helping his brother on his house while on suspension from his detective position in DC. There is no way that Joey and Kennedy could ever work right? I mean come on they are both only in town for a short time and they don’t need any distractions from their “real lives” but just maybe they will become each other Exception and put them in the path they where always meant to be on.
Exception is a story of finding yourself in the place you least expect. Facing your demons and finding your truth. It’s well written and although a little slow paced I would definitely love to see more of the characters (Violet/ Grace) in the future. And definitely want to see where the future takes the DeLucas. Joey and Coen are fantastic bbf. If you haven’t read anything by MD I suggest you get on it! Exception is. a definite good read. I did receive a free Arc from the publisher via net galley but this is my unbiased opinion.

Exception is a beautiful story that takes place in the small town of Haven Point, Virginia. It’s the story of two people trying to live their lives how they think they should be living it. Kennedy is living in Boston, barely scrapping by doing a job she doesn’t like. She isn’t making enough money so she heads back to Haven Point, moves in with her parents and feels like a complete failure.
Joey is on administrative leave from his job as a dectective in Washington D. C. and he heads to Haven Point to help his brother restore an old home he brought into a dream house for himself and his family. Neither Kennedy nor Joey like small towns nor do they like each other after their first disastrous meeting. As with most small towns everybody knows everybody else’s business. But there are a couple of hidden secrets.
This is a character driven story with well developed characters. Ms. Dietz faces head on a serious topic that is relevant to today’s society but doesn’t make it the complete focal point of the book. She also doesn’t provide insta-love or insta-sex with the two main characters. She takes her time to build the relationship between Joey and Kennedy. She also writes the love scenes PG rated and very well done.
I really enjoyed this book and the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was there were a few story lines that I wish had been further developed to make the book a little more exciting. But I love the ending and you definitely get your HEA!

Kennedy has been in Boston for years, but is failing at everything ... her job, her love love and her happily-ever-after. So she decides to move back home to Haven Point to save some money so she can move back to Boston and get her life back on track. But she didn't plan on meeting Joey DeLuca ... he's rude and arrogant, the kind of man you hate. But you know that old saying "there's a fine line between love and hate". Joey is a detective with the DC police department and his job is under review (for getting too involved in a case), so he is helping his brother Coen (from book 1) renovate is newly purchased home in the small town of Haven Point. He has no time for women ... that is until he meets Kennedy. He can't get her off his mind, but he doesn't even remember how to flirt and he comes across as angry. But the sparks fly between them and neither can resist.

This is a sweet romance that will have you laughing one minute and swooning the next. I liked that they took a little bit of time to get to know one another before jumping into bed. And it was a pleasant change that Joey wasn't a womanizer ... in fact he was a little awkward around women ... or maybe it was just Kennedy.

This 4 star story was not only a romantic story but one about family dynamics and friendships. It was about making choices and taking a chance.

Kennedy tired to make it work in Boston. After a few years away from Haven Point, Virginia she must return unwillingly. Joey finds himself in that town helping his brother out. He’s on leave from his job. Sparks fly upon meeting it’s almost hate at first site. A friendship will be born that will flourish into love. Now they both have choices to make.

It was a great story, although it was slow easing into the story but once in it was hard to let go. There was a lot of family drama from Kennedy’s side that was quite heartbreaking. Her sister Grace is going through some rather difficult times. Kennedy is not quite sure how to help her. A story that has been told numerous times over with a storyline that was not unique. It was still entertaining and a fun read. The bantering from Joey and Kennedy was funny at times.

Standalone told in a dual POV with an HEA. I recommend this story.

3.5 STARS!!!

Exception was a good read. To be honest, it did take a while to get into the story because of the slow pace and it also took a while for me to connect with the characters. However, once I did I actually started to enjoy this story so much more. I did not read "Curveball" so even though the characters cross over into this book, this story can be read as a standalone because this story gives readers Kennedy and Joey's story, but I do wish I had read "Curveball" first. I would have loved to have known Ella and Coen's history, but you definitely feel the love they have for each other in this book. The chemistry between Kennedy and Joey was undeniable and I loved the "slow burn" feel to their relationship. This is one story that gives you the dynamics of families, friendships, love and a sweet ending. It had a bit of a "rushed" feeling to the ending but, it was sweet none the less. I enjoyed the banter between the brothers, the love Kennedy had for her sister and her friendship with Violet. I would recommend readers giving this book a try and I look forward to reading more books from this author in the near future, starting with Curveball.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

The first book really surprised me in a very positive way so there was no question whether to read this one either. I enjoyed it quite well, true a tad bit less than the first book but it was still phenomenal. The best way I could describe it how I think about this story is something that you snuggle up with in a cold night in front of the fireplace and a big cup of tea. Even thou it has a couple of really serious topics detailed in it for some reason my focus was on the warm and fuzzy.
So as I mentioned just now there are a couple of darker topics playing quite a big role in this story and however important they are, I felt they got a bit too much of an attention especially since it wasn’t connected to the main characters indirectly. I felt it could have been more beneficial to the story if it concentrated more on Kennedy and the things happening directly to her and not her sister story. I know that the two things went hand in hand and influenced each other still I felt the balance between them was a bit off. Anyway I enjoyed the plot very much even if it was a bit stifling at parts and I felt a bit more action would have shaken it up.

The author has a kind of fluid and easy writing style and I love to read her stories. This style helps when it comes to pulling the reader into the book and so far it was successful with me. Yet what I loved about this book the best was with alternating between the two POVs (Kennedy and Joey) she accomplished to really show the story from different sides. I don’t even know how to describe it to make sense so bear with me a bit. Usually even with dual POVs you only see the same story from different angles but since you know both of them you form a common, an unified feeling about it. However in this case when I was reading the different narratives I was constantly pin-ponging between feelings, opinions I couldn’t decide on just one. As if I was really two people. I don’t know if you could understand what I wanted to say but this element was what was my favorite in this book.

In the end I liked both Kennedy and Joey but in both cases I needed to read more chapters to get there. They didn’t start out as instantly likeable characters, especially in Kennedy case. You needed to peel back the layers around them to really see them and then you could get absolutely enchanted by them. The romance between them is a slower one and starts out as bickering, then friendship and they only take the next step after that.
Also I loved seeing the characters from Curveball.

This was a beautiful, funny and somewhat heartbreaking story of love, family and understanding and accepting who you really are. There is a lot going on in it on different fronts all of them interesting and emotional yet I couldn’t give it five stars because I kept waiting for something more happening, something sinister since there were hints of it here and there in the book.

Another amazing novel by Mariah Dietz! A solid 4.5 Stars. I received a free advanced copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.
Mariah has masterfully weaved another fantastic story. This story has the perfect blend of emotions, humor, sexiness, and realistic characters with real-life issues.
To some, Mariah's novels may start off slow, but to me, the timing couldn't be better. Her writing carries an authenticness which is missing in many romance novels. I love how we get to meet and know her characters first. You end up rooting for them because they could be your best friend, sister, brother, daughter or son.
You will fall in love with Kennedy's easy-going attitude and Joey's brashness, not to mention all the supporting characters that make up the small town of Haven Point. They may not openly admit to liking one another right way, but when they do it is messy and beautiful.
Thank you for the advance copy, a Mariah Dietz novel never disappoints.
