It's Hard to Conceive!: an infertility story

Rate this book
"They had scheduled this night, their first 'timed-relation.'
No sex just for sex—it was sex for creation!"

Seussian rhymes!
Whimsical illustrations!
And oh-so-many sex puns!

"Down the F’n Tubes" attempts to break down the door on a taboo subject. Infertility impacts many would-be parents, and when those damn sperm and eggs refuse to make a baby, it SUCKS.

Whether you’re at the beginning or end of the process of starting a family - dealing with endometriosis, PCOS, or unexplained infertility - this book shows the pain and the humor in trying to get pregnant.

In the story, a young couple is whisked to a magical world where they must help an Egg and a Sperm swim across a wide sea and meet at an island in the middle. But month after month, the damn critters drown in that bloody ocean. During the endeavor, our couple experiences frustration, shame, heartbreak, occasional joy, and double-entendres galore!

Down the F’n Tubes is a hilarious, profane, but ultimately heartfelt exploration of the emotional rollercoaster of infertility, and the strains it places on marriages and relationships.

If you’re trying to conceive, or want to understand why someone you love is so pissed off about it, this is a book for you.

A much needed smile

This book was a cute read for someone who has experienced IF for a decade. It brought a smile to my face instead of the usual tears. The ending was great and unexpected. Very nice.

First of all this is a really mature book due to the content both in text and illustrations as well as the inclusion of some strong language.

Anyway this book has come into my life at a time when I am feeling down and frustrated at our own status married couplehood. Although told quite early on that it wasn't going to be a choice you still hope and review constantly what the other choices may be or whether there may be a magical cure that can fix the some of the worse news in your life. And yet you also wonder whether the whole process is worth the time spent on the whole mess or even if you really can be happy to skip pass that part of life?

The story follow one young couple who finally choose to buckle down and start their own family just to find that unlike all those seemingly hundreds around them that have no cares in the world when it comes to procreation they are just out of luck. And in a strange twist their gametes come out to try to procure some help in a situation that just cannot be resolved on their own.

The writing is a rhyming and fast rollick in the world of infertility while capturing the emotional conflicts that it seems I have faced in my own fight. And paired with the basic almost comic-like illustrations it is a story that strongly resonates, especially the fact that instead of sharing a starter beach both of the couple are stuck on their own deserted beach with seemingly an abyss between them as well as Babyland. Sure does feel like each person in a couple that are trying are really well and alone in their fight, especially if they have been called the culprit causing all the problems.

I truly must say that I love how this story ends, though. Although we are left wondering if they are ever able to reach their dreams and how long it may take for them it does end on a small note of hope. Not only is the reader given along with Rick and Riley all the ways a family can be reached if you should want to try other unconventional means but also that life can be happy and complete without the sound of small feet pattering down the hallways around you.

Great Read

For someone who went threw this for years, it hits every outcome and emotion. I especially liked the ending and how they made every option a possibility if pregnancy didn't occur. It was reality but told in a comforting humorous way others can understand and you can get some sense of journey.

Adorable

This was such a cute way to express what can be a long, lonely and frustratingly painful journey. The very end is simply beautiful.

A ballad on the attempts to achieve so they could conceive! …and, in the end it’s worth it --- even if it doesn’t happen!
