Rate this book
“The United States ends at these gates. This is Joshua’s Country, jefe.”Born-and-raised a cowboy, Vietnam vet Joshua Jacobs looks out across the West Texas plain. All the land stretching to the uncluttered western horizon is his. From just a patch of land he built an empire, one he runs by his own rules. Yet, Joshua learned a hard lesson ... that his family couldn’t be run the same way. Joshua deeply regretted not being on speaking terms with his only son when James died serving his country. James’s wife Katy never forgave Joshua for trying to run their lives. Heartache upon heartache, Joshua’s beloved wife Sarah passed not long after. Now, the only legacy Joshua has left is his grandson, but like his dad and granddad before him, young Josh also chose to serve his country. Joshua spends his days waiting for letters from him. In the latest letter, young Josh said he was thinking of finally leaving the military to take his place on the ranch at his grandfather’s side. Joshua was overjoyed, but his joy was cut short when he saw a picture of his grandson on the news. The report said young Josh was taken hostage by the head of the most violent ISIS unit, known as the “Storm Demons.” Their leader, Shakir was infamous for beheading his hostages and broadcasting the horrors online to the world. Threatening Joshua Jacobs’ grandson was a mistake. Now, an Islamic Extremist’s hate for America faces an old cowboy’s love for his grandson. Couldn't put this book down

I read this book in one sitting , each page holding me captive. So many different well drawn characters, from Joshua a man of his generation , a veteran marine , who loved his family dearly , but struggled to express his emotions , like so many men of his generation , to Snake and Pepper , his old army colleagues. Not forgetting Josh , and his mother Katy. The Isis theme running through the book ,especially with the threat of the Mexican Border is very relevant . Well written , high action , grabs your attention from start to finish .

I’ve always thought it was difficult to capture the spirit of the westerns set in the late nineteenth century in a twenty-first century tale, but Gerard de Marigny managed this feat in his short novel, Joshua’s Country. Joshua Jacob is an old man who struck me as being a little bit out of time. He is very much the sort of rancher you could find in a Louis L’Amour novel carving out a living for himself and his men and their families out in the great American west (in this case, Texas). When his grandson gets in trouble with ISIS insurgents in Iraq, Joshua is forced to look more closely at the relationship he forged with his now dead son and is trying to build with his grandson.

There is a lot of action in this novel and a dastardly set of villains ranging from terrorists, drug cartels and corrupt government officials. It’s all a lot of fun. De Marigny could have built this novel as a thriller or a simple action/adventure piece, but his decision to ground it in the western genre made it feel much more approachable and less over-the-top to me. Joshua has stepped out of the romanticized legends of the west. Character matters. Family matters. A man’s word matters. It made so many of his decisions and actions instantly credible. My only complaint is that I don’t see a sequel coming out of this story. It doesn’t need one.

I received this book from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.

I received a review copy of this book from the author through Voracious Readers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. In fact, I read it in one sitting. This is a high octane action-packed story. It is also relevant in today’s world, as I could imagine hearing something like this on the news. The characters are all well developed, the action is non-stop explosive and the story is so realistic it’s almost scary.

I also loved that the story, although set in modern times, had a bit of a feel of the old-time westerns I read as a child. What do you do when your loved ones are targeted by bad guys and the law can’t help? You circle the wagons and shoot it out. Fantastic read!

I loved this novel. There was so much going on in it. It switched back and forth between two characters, but the chapters were always titled with a location, so you know who's story you were hearing. It was gripping right from the start. I never wanted it to end because it was just so enjoyable. It is a book suitable for more of an adult crowd as opposed to a younger audience it was well written, and it was so descriptive, I could actually imagine everything happening while I was reading it. This is my first read by this author, but will not be my last.

This book is heart-breakingly plausible. It’s a wonderful mixture of western, family love, drama, action. It was wonderfully written, and excellently thought out. I’m incredibly impressed with how much I loved this book. I was a little weary at first because of the ISIS/cowboy theme. That’s not usually something I’m into. However, Gerard de Marigny fused them together wonderfully. The character development in the story is also excellent. Very subtle throughout, but ends up being a complete 180. I can’t wait to read more of de Marigny’s work. What an artist.

I totally loved this book that I got as a complimentary copy from Voracious Readers Only. Although Western style is not my cup of tea, this is so much more than that! it is set in today's world with issues that could very well happen in real life now. A very good book indeed.

Very nice story with plenty of action. I liked getting to know Joshua and figuring out the reason why he is the way he is. Seeing him all protective when it comes to the people he meets and cares about s a very nice plus. However when people cross him he would stop at nothing to get even. That is in the story where Sharif went wrong. He crossed Joshua and had to pay in one way or another. To know how he pays you will have to read it.
It is fast paced with plenty of action to make sure that once you start reading it you won't put it down till you finish it.

Loved this book! I was given a copy via Voracious Readers Only. Fast paced and intense from start to end with a fantastic story line that is totally believable. The author (Gerard de Marigny) spins a tale of excitement and sadness, roping the reader into a world that includes the military and dangers faced by our troops daily, as well as a different pace of life involving a gigantic Texas ranch. Totally different than what I had at first expected!
A definite "must-read"!

Enjoyed this book immensely. Joshua Jacobs is a curmudgeonly rancher who has lost his beloved wife and adored son. His grandson, Josh Jnr, is also a marine, serving another tour in Afghanistan. When Joshua doesn’t hear from him he worries. A crooked Border Patrol agent, a smuggling operation and some Afghan terrorists make this story a definite hit! Don’t miss it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Voracious Readers Only and I’m reviewing it completely voluntarily.

A story that opens readers eyes to the reality of terrorist involvement here in the United States. Joshua's Country is a way of keeping people safe from harm, but despite how prepared he is, evil still enters his world. It makes the reader think that America is not immune to the evil and dangerous actions of the Middle East.

The tale starts out with an interesting, yet emotional background on the elder Joshua Jacobs. Joshua is a hard-working, ornery old cuss that built himself quite an empire on the Texas plains. Unfortunately, dedication to build and expand left little time, passion, or understanding for his family. Joshua’s son is killed in Afghanistan. Not wanting to make the same mistakes with his grandson, Joshua hopes and prays that young Josh will tire of the Marines, return home, and take over the empire. The focus of the tale turns to young Josh. My only complaint is when Sgt. Josh leaves the ISIS leader Shakir alive back in Afghanistan, especially after threatening his family. The action and excitement pick up as Josh returns home, only to have his family confront a terrorist’s vengeance. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I have to admit that I'm a bit biased about this story because my brother and nephew are both named Josh. I saw a lot of my brother in Joshua, the grandfather in this story who will stop at nothing to protect his family. I loved the loyalty he inspired in those surrounding him; their presence showed that he was a good man. This story is very timely and invokes some concepts that many fear may come to pass if nothing changes with our border policies (although the ability to corrupt law enforcement renders any law meaningless anyway). Thought provoking and enjoyable.

I listened to this and appreciated the voices the narrator did for the various characters.

Joshua Jacobs owns a large spread in Texas and is a Vet. His grandson is a Marine stationed in iraq when things go wrong and young Josh is captured. He escapes and returns home to Texas but trouble follows him. N one messes with the Jacobs family especialy in Joshua's Country. This is faced paced and really a wake up call. This just shows how easy it is for terrorists to get into our country. This should be a wake up call

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. Joshua Jacobs is a Texan who after returning from the Vietnam War builds an impressive spread with the help of some of his devoted friends. The story is about the struggles of him wanting his son and grandson to continue in his footsteps. Both his son and grandson choose military service over the ranch. Very good book, deals with a wide variety of issues from ISIS to illegal immigration and more.

I received a copy of this book via Voracious Readers Only - the author sent me a hard copy of the book via Amazon.

I was a little nervous that the tone would be excessively religious after reading the author’s blurb....... but it was not off-putting. The casual racism was disturbing though.

Despite that I enjoyed the book - the characters were enjoyable.

Gerard De Marigny is a masterful storyteller. While I prefer his Cris De Niro series Joshua's Country was very good. A new cast of completely unrelated characters but still with the terrorist storyline.

This book is a take on "cowboys and indians," but it's changed to cowboys(ex military) and terrorists. I did enjoy it, there was the feel of being right there in the story.
