Grape Merriweather #2

Wrong Side of the Rift

Rate this book
Grape can’t unlearn what living in Sortilege Falls has taught her. Magic is real. Vampires live among us. And there’s a portal in her back yard that leads to another world.

A few weeks ago, Grape lived a quiet life with her family in Watts Landing. Now, she’s stuck in Sortilege Falls, searching for a way to rescue her brother from the other side of the rift. She’s connected to Brad through dreams and what she sees terrifies her. Brad is being tortured into performing magic and, even worse, he’s being forced to torture others.

Grape hounds the magic folk in town, seeking a way through the rift. Her mother’s memory’s been stolen. Her new vampire friend refuses to help. Grape must do it all alone. What she uncovers is a whole host of secrets about the town and her own family. And she’s not the only one hunting for answers.

Time is running out for Brad, but it might be running out for Grape as well.

I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

Having tried and failed with the previous book .
I decided to give the second book in the series a try.
Unfortunately this was as bad as the first book.
The story was supposedly for teens but the writing seemed to be for so much younger.
The characters was shallow and it felt totally unrealistic.
Just not for me I suppose.

Why is a good book so good? “The Wrong Side of the Rift” seems to be a standard Young Adult Paranormal novel. Magic in an otherwise normal present-day setting. Intertwining conflicts with magical beings and teenage bullies. A quest to solve an unsolvable problem.

But normal as this book sounds, I found myself reading longer than I had planned. There I was, looking up in confusion, as I pulled myself into the real world, away from the enthralling atmosphere of the story.

How does Libby Heily do it? It’s all a matter of balance. This author knows when to push the emotion and when to back off: when a conflict has gone far enough, and when to keep the fight going. I recall one point where I was just starting to feel the main character was becoming too negative. On the next page she did something to redeem herself, and I felt a sense of relief and satisfaction. All was as it should be. I was ready for the next battle, with the right people on the right side of the fight.

Plenty of action, plenty of atmosphere, great setting description (due to the nature of Grape’s burgeoning magic, odours are very important). A reading experience that really draws you in.

This is the second in a series, and while you don’t have to read the first book – Ms. Heily cleverly slips in enough backstory to keep us aware of what has happened – I suspect you will enjoy that one, too.

Highly recommended for Paranormal fans.

The Wrong Side of the Rift by Libby Heily is the 2nd book in the __ series. It’s a fantasy read and talks about how Grape Merriweather tried to save his brother, Brad. While solving the mystery about his brother’s disappearance, she discovers a lot more about who she really is and where her family came from.
This is the first book that I’ve read in the series. I didn’t even have any idea that this was a sequel to another book until I started reading it. Most of the later parts of a series provide introduction on what the series is all about but there was no introduction whatsoever in this book. I was lost in the first half of the book. I felt that I was reading words but not taking the meaning in. I had no idea what was happening. I know I may be at fault for reading this without reading the first one but the book should be more welcoming to new readers.
Grape was meh. Yes, she loves his brother which was already missing. But I think she’s too driven by her emotions. She doesn’t pay attention to the small details that may be important in some time later. She lashes out to Mandy and everyone else without even thinking. She doesn’t even trust her best friend and chose to ignore her. I didn’t even like her that much but thankfully, I kind of got the hang of the story when I started reading the 2nd half.
I think some parts of the story are just too superficial. I get that some people actually worship someone gorgeous but to the extent that they fight over being beautiful really got me thinking, “why?” I don’t really know why but I didn’t find the story very promising. I was expecting a lot from it because I’m a big fan of fantasy books. I was disappointed.
Overall, I rate the Wrong Side of the Rift by Libby Heily 2 out of 5 stars and I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you take the time to read the first book first in the hopes that you’ll like it more than I did.

Title: Wrong Side of the Rift - Grape Merriweather Book 2
Author: Libby Heily
Publisher: Fire & Ice Young Adult Books
Date of Publishing: November 14, 2017

This book given to me by NetGalley and Fire & Ice Young Adult Books in exchange for my honest review.

Grape Merriweather is determined to get her brother back, even though no one seems to remember she had a brother, not even her own mother. Mandy thinks she is loosing her mind as do the other surviving models, Now flawed and normal like everyone else. The only other persons to remeber her brother are those from the other side of the rift. Courage will be needed will all paths to the information she needs are blocked. Who can she trust and who will help her/ Who would destroy her to keep her from finding the truth?

The characters have continued to develope as the story continues. This second offerring of Grape Merriweather's new life in Sortilege Falls seems a bit darker and more intense than the first. The book opens with Grape on her own with no help in sight. She is courageous and inventive. Libby Heily provides a fast moving story that makes you feel as if the town might be real and people there could be someone you might know. The mind of the teens depicted are not minature adults but act like real teens, a bit selfish, a bit self centered, but also loyal to fault to their friends and family. This is a good read for teens and adults alike and I hope to see more of Heily's writing in the future.

I gave "Wrong Side of the Rift - Grape Merriweather Book 2" a 4.5 out of a total of 5 stars.

A Captivating Page-turner—Even better than Book One!

I loved “Welcome to Sortilege Falls” so I expected to love this one too, but I was still surprised by how much I enjoyed this!

It’s a great read, but over way too soon. I was so caught up in the story, that when my kindle told me I only had 45 minutes left of the book, I was really bummed!

The story builds on WTSF but takes it way farther than I originally thought it would/could go. Heily’s imagination is only matched by her brilliantly descriptive and creative writing style. It’s witty, clever, and anything but typical. I can almost always guess where a story is headed, but these books have left me on the edge of my seat, wondering what will happen next, and definitely wanting more.

I can’t wait to read book 3 and whatever else Libby Heily writes. She’s got an amazing way of creating a world and immersing you in it so you know exactly what her characters are feeling and you can relate to it completely.

A must read for fans of fantasy/paranormal stories, it’s easily appropriate for pre-teens through adults. It’s less sappy & full of angst than Twilight, more like our “normal” world than Harry Potter, and approaches issues (like the quest for beauty/ celebrity) that make for good conversations with your kids. It’s also a fun read for people who were teens once upon a time (& are glad to have moved past that phase of life!).

Wrong Side of the Rift is the second book in a series about Grape Merriweather, the main character. I didn’t read the first book, Welcome to Sortilege Falls, before picking up the sequel, but I could follow along just fine. Although I would recommend starting with the first book since you do probably miss some background story by starting with the sequel, it’s not necessary.

Anyway, on to the book itself. Grape knows magic and vampires are real, and that there’s a portal in her backyard that can transport her to another world. But not everything is magical and fun in Grape’s life. Her brother has been kidnapped, and if she wants to save him, she’ll have to find a way through the rift. But while doing so, she uncovers more secrets than she thought possible…and not just about the town, but her own family as well.

This book really kept me on the edge of my seat. The world-building was great, not too complex, but easy enough that you could just dive right in and adapt to the rules of Grape’s world. Grape is an interesting character, and I loved her sometimes quirky personality. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next, and had to finish this book in one sitting.
