The Afflicted

They were coming. She hadn't been careful enough this time. The Lady had told her that she had to always be on the watch for others, those not like herself, but she hadn't heeded her mentor's words well enough and they had seen. A stupid, vapid boy had been her undoing. A boy not much older than she. All because she had to display how different she was, how powerful, how deadly.
"Lady, come to me now. I need ye."

I picked this book up because I loved the author’s previous work and this story was just as great as his other books!

This is a story that takes a power from the time of the Salem Witch Trials and brings it to modern day in the form of a very creepy doll that has very evil plans!

However as this evil entity grows in powers and followers, we are also introduced to Sarah and her group of friends, a motley crew of homeless teenagers that survive by their wits and by relying on each other.

You quickly grow to love this team of misfits as they are all fully developed characters with their own desires and motivations. You can easily identify with Sarah as she will do anything to keep her found family safe and together. I have to admit that my favorite character of this little group is Sloanne, I love how she is tough and a no-nonsense, take action type of girl!

On the other hand, our villains are not just your standard "bad guys," we quickly learn that this group of adversaries is unique, and intriguing to the reader as well. Their story draws you in and you can't help but wonder what they hope to accomplish with their devious plans.

With the help of a few other strong characters, our heroes all manage to overcome the evil that is threatening them and possibly our world.

Something that I personally like about this book is that the majority of the characters in this book are women and they are strong, resourceful, independent, intelligently and fiercely loyal to those they care about. That is something I personally love to see in works of fiction.

All in all it’s a great book with terrific characters that you love to root for. It also has an overall message that family is not always determined by blood, it can be determined by the bonds that we make with the people we meet in our lives.
