Moxie is a story about men and women in a sailboat race across the Atlantic. But it is mainly the story of one man alone, against the sea, the man who won. Phillip Weld, he was 65 years old, and this is his account of his great sailing victory in the 1980 Observer Single-handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR) 2810 miles from Plymouth, England to Newport, Rhode Island. (from book jacket)
Definitely an interesting life, well-lived, but a pretty technical & dry read if you know nothing about boats or sailing (I know nothing about boats or sailing). My landlord was friends with the author as well as the boat designer, so he made me read this book when he found out I like Moxie, the soda - I personally don't recommend this being sufficient reason to pick up the book.
One of the great sailing books of all time. Phillip Weld is from Massachusettts and was the publisher of the old Boston Post and then the Gloucester Daily Times. Moxie is a fifty foot trimaran that Weld sailed solo across the Atlantic in a grueling race. Many Massachusetts sailors might remember seeing Moxie on Martha's Vineyard where it was moored after Weld sold it. The book is out of print now but is highly recommended to anyone who peruses old book shops and may come across it.
