2:30AM Thoughts:

Not my first all nighter and definitely not my last. Hello, research paper. But this was one of the happiest all nighters ever. Thank you, Ms. Paige. I needed this.

Now, back to my sad and depressing medtech student reality.

Romance, Suspense, Mystery! 4½ Passionate Stars!

Another enjoyable romantic suspense from Victoria Paige that includes some mysteries to solve along the way. That dash of mystery is becoming a familiar element in Ms. Paige’s romances with characters that are not always who they seem and sinister motivations and secrets that continue to be revealed up until the end.

Blaire Callahan is an intriguing and talented artist who tries to avoid any kind of personal relationships because she is hiding from her dangerous past. She can’t resist the pull of Grant Thorne and the feeling is definitely mutual when they meet near her reclusive residence in the mountains where he has an accident and needs help. While Grant recuperates, there is a strong spark of attraction and that “something special” persona makes Blaire unforgettable and compels this alpha male to pursue a serious relationship.

Blaire soon agrees to move in with Grant because of their strong feelings as well as the protection he can offer if trouble arises. She is willing to take a chance rather than lose him. Grant is the CEO of his own business and the son of a senator. Blaire finds it difficult coping with his political and business world and the possibility of exposure that she has avoided for years. Even though she wants to be with him, she soon becomes afraid of putting Grant and his family at risk if her presence becomes known to her past enemies now that she is no longer in hiding. She has run before, but she has no idea how determined Grant is to keep her in his life. He refuses to let her go.

Falling in love and staying in love is not easy when secrets are exposed and dangers are around every corner. Blaire fears her enemies will destroy any happiness she has found with Grant. As far as Grant is concerned, he has already claimed Blaire and she will just have to learn to trust him and the protection he can provide despite her fears. His possessive and sometimes overbearing ways cause a lot of tension and disagreements in their developing relationship. Grant tends to micromanage and compartmentalize every aspect of his life instead of communicating and sharing decisions with Blaire. Blaire is too independent and spirited to tolerate that for long and clashes are inevitable.

There are some harsh confrontations and heartaches as they work through their issues. This causes immense pressure while trying to stay safe and eventually solve the mystery of who is trying to capture Blaire and use her to get vital information. These two have a hard time compromising because they are passionate, strong-willed people. They feel very deeply for one another and need to work out their issues in order to have a lasting bond. The alternative would be separation, and that is too devastating for them to contemplate. This part of the story was very relatable since couples often need more direct communication and a willingness to change hurtful behaviors in order for readers to actually believe there can be a believable HEA beyond the pages of the book.

The Russian mafia’s constant pursuit of Blaire for information and then elimination and the political pressures made on Grant’s family provide an interesting romance and a well-crafted suspense plot. I liked the loyalty that Blaire and Grant had for one another from the beginning despite family members or other people trying to sew the seeds of doubt or sabotage their trust. It was refreshing that this couple didn't fall for the shade thrown their way. Deep down Grant and Blaire believed in one another in the midst of overwhelming odds. It was a pleasure to read about the growth in their journey despite the turmoil and dangers that kept trying to destroy them. I loved that the heroine was strong, brave, and confident enough to depend upon her own skills when facing tough situations. I liked that Grant could remain possessive and protective, but still make changes that the heroine needed so he could become a better partner in a lasting relationship.

I recommend this story if you like intelligent suspense with an intense love story. Victoria Paige always comes through with interesting characters, passionate and steamy love scenes, and carefully researched plots that keep you turning the pages.

I received an ARC for my honest opinion.

Ahhh ! What can I say? I love the strong but elusive heroines in Ms Paige's stories.
Blaire. Her story is told in 1st person POV. An artist, an enigma. Not in your face, but kinda kick-ass.
Grant. Told in 3rd person POV. He's alpha, strong, possessive. He wants/needs Blaire.
A lot of twists and turns. I kept switching my sympathy. I truly wanted these two to have their happy ending. But how can they? They start off polar opposites, but are so magnetically attracted to each other. Insta -love/lust? Maybe, but boy that gave them more time to explore and me to read about. Very sexy steamy. Their chemistry really kicked in.
So much intrigue & suspense. I had a flash- back reminder of the Jennifer Garner TV series called "Alias".
Sydney was the main character. Up close, she was so sweet & tender. The next minute, she's high kicking some bloke's carotid!
The lesson is: Never under estimate anyone! Especially Ms Paige's heroines!
I highly recommend this book .

Her secrets won’t change his mind…

The woman Grant Thorne craves has left him and he doesn’t know the reasons why, the secrets he’s sensed she kept finally sent her running and him on a mission to track her down. His first stop being the mountains of Colorado where the memories of how they began assail him. This reader loves it when a story begins with suspense and an enigma, an obsessed hero is on the hunt for his missing woman, an alpha male amok but not due to ego, he really cares about this woman and unless she turns out to be a serial killer he’ll protect her. The prologue opens in the present and then we see the past where the protagonists met to get context to the relationship before the story moves forward.

After an accident on a snowmobile in a blizzard left him injured, Grant awakened in a remote cabin to see the beautiful face of an angel, one of two people who rescued him. He’s the CEO of his company, as well as the son of a senator so he’s not an unknown figure to them. Until the storm dissipates and roads are cleared he’s snowbound with this woman who intrigues him like no other has and an older man who lives nearby and is highly protective of her. They are both reclusive in nature and though grateful to his saviors Grant wants more with this woman, there’s a passionate connection between them he needs to explore and he’s a man who goes after what he wants. Little does he know that what she keeps hidden is the obstacle that will eventually derail them. He can’t protect her from what he doesn’t know.

The artist Blaire Callahan is a recluse in the mountains. With her protective friend and neighbor Liam they find a man in the snow. They should leave him for he represents a serious danger to them but she finds that idea inhumane so they take him home and attend his injuries. He’s a known figure and that is worrisome, they are snowbound until the weather eases. She finds herself inexorably drawn to this man and the heat his presence elicits within her. She has much to hide, secrets she cannot share, her isolated life a self-imposed exile. The plan is to return the man to town as soon as possible, she couldn’t predict his persistence afterwards; he’s a hard man to say no to when she doesn’t really want to. He has the means to protect her but can it work? Can her guise stand up around him considering who he is?

This was a most enjoyable read, this book had an involved, captivating, storyline, a steamy budding relationship with seriously stubborn protagonists who looked to protect each other and would go to extremes to do so. I liked the push and pull between them, the personal growth each exhibited and finally the trust in each other once her secrets inevitably came to light. They had to literally fight for what they wanted, and it was time for Liam’s wren to fly on her own. There’s some serious kick-ass action and fitting cameos of characters from the Always series.

An advanced reading copy was obtained from the author.

4.25+ RATING- Captive Lies was a great weekend read. I had plans to meet some girlfriends for brunch and was sad to have to put this down and admit to picking it right back up as soon as I got home. This is probably the best writing from this author that I've seen. I usually hate stories that jump back in forth in time and I was a little peeved when I realized there was some back and forth. But the author kept it to a minimum and I didn't think it was disruptive to the story line at all. In fact, the story was well paced and the writing very readable. The author didn't skimp on the steam either! The hero was Alpha with a capital A. Over the top, obsessive, instant everything and I loved him! The heroine was sassy and held her ground quite well with him. No untried virgin either which was nice. Overall, I'd recommend this to readers that enjoy guilty pleasure romantic suspense stories with crazy in love stalker-like heroes, lol. If you have't read this author before and are wondering where to start, Captive Lies would be my recommendation!

Hero fits the alpha j/p trope. He does a dick move at one point and heroine gets hurt emotionally and physically after.

In theory, I should have liked this book but I didn’t.. maybe it’s the writing style that just didn’t gel with me..

He was out cold in the snow. Could she just leave him to freeze to death? She and her had so many secrets and a past that they were running from, but they just couldn't walk away from a stranger that needed help. Blaire's decision to help Grant would change their lives forever.

Victoria Paige's Captive Lies is a great story about love, lust, secrets, and non stop action. Definitely a must read. Plus, we get cameos from characters from her other best sellers.

He just needed to tone it down a bit…

I hate to say it, but I think I might (MIGHT) be over bossy Alpha males. Or, maybe this was just an extreme case of *TOO BOSSY FOR HIS OWN GOOD*. Unfortunately, the hero had me swinging from I want to smack him for being too bossy or gag him for his lovesick corniness. I never, never, never thought the day would come that I would roll my eyes from the excessive amount of sexy times in a book. Seriously, this guy was permanently aroused and ready to bang her against a wall.

Captive Lies was a little too long for me and I felt like the first half of the story dragged. I found myself looking for distractions and wishing they would just HURRY UP. There were scenes that were overly descriptive but had no relevance to the plot moving forward. For me, a suspense must maintain a certain pace to keep the heart pumping. I needed to be on the edge of my seat, predicting the next move and hoping I was prepared for an attack. It wasn’t until the second half of the story that I reached the high and my heart started pumping. There was too much unnecessary angst to keep the plot flowing in the first half.

I enjoyed it by the end, especially when Victor Baran and Gabriel (Sully) Sullivan dropped in. Those Guardian men make my heart flutter just by walking into a room. Their bossiness is controlled and completely alluring. I would follow their instructions without question…and love every minute of it. Unfortunately, *TOO BOSSY FOR HIS OWN GOOD* didn’t have that same allure.

Once we are introduced to all the players, it didn’t take me long to work out who the baddies were and I was gobsmacked that the heroine didn’t work it out sooner.

I have been a huge fan of Victoria Paige for years. While this story didn’t work for me it will not stop me from reading her future work. If you love OTT bossy Alpha’s, who lose their mind when their woman’s life is in jeopardy, Captive Lies might be perfect for you.

What a rush of a story! There is something for everyone in this. Mafia ties, intrigue, political posturing and finally a love story all tangled together. Grant and Blaire met by chance but their relationship was tested time and time again but they always managed to come out stronger.

This is an action packed, page turning read with larger than life characters and a kick-ass strong female lead. The players will have you guessing who is bad or good. The interactions between Grant and Blaire will have you swooning in their love story.

Captive Lies,  Victoria Paige

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Mystery & Thrillers, Romance

I really liked the sound of this story, and to begin I was enjoying it but....the the Russian Mafia slant came into play, and though I know there are readers who love stories with a Mafia bent I'm not one. Fortunately the Mafia were the bad guys, I really can't take it when they're passed of as good guys really, just misunderstood...

I loved Blaire, she was in the situation she was through her birth, nothing she could have done about it, unless she was prepared to knuckle down and have her life run by the Russians. Liam, her friend and protector was a great guy too, and he gave her the training to protect herself. I so like that, when a main character doesn't have to depend on a man to save her but can hold her own in a fight. Grant, alpha male in the extreme and for me he was at times too pushy, too overly controlling, bordering on abusive in his need to control. Blaire is a tough girl, she's survived despite having some bad people out to get her and though he wants to protect her he shouldn't expect her to hand over all control to him and sit back and ...well, what? Shop? Watch daytime TV? That's just not Blaire, she paints but can't spend all day every day doing that.

I was doing OK with the story, Grant's obsessive personality and tendency to act like a jerk aside, but it got slowly more overly complex, with distrust everywhere, and threats from all quarters. That can be fun, keeping readers on their toes but can also mean a story gets overly complex. I had guessed one person who was not who they seemed, I wasn't totally sure but looking back all the clues were there, I just wasn't sure I was reading them properly – that's good, I like to be surprised. Then the mafia and political threats began to overlap, technology that seemed improbable crept in and was used to make scenes work that wouldn't otherwise, and it seemed a little too far fetched for me. I do need to believe in a story, and though technology has advanced hugely, and of course this is fiction I felt that some parts were a little hard for me to believe in. It seemed if you'd got money – and Grant had – then anything could be had for a price.

I wasn't convinced by Cal, I kind of thought something along those lines would happen, there's hints thrown in all along but I was disappointed that it worked that way – more of that improbable technology for me. I want to believe things could happen that way if this were a true story and that...nope, I can't fall for it.

It sounds like I hated the story, and that's just not true, these were just niggles, big niggles, for me and overall I enjoyed reading this novel. It was my first read by this author and I think if I'd read the Guardians novels maybe I'd have got more from it and understood better what they were capable of.

Stars: Three and a half, a good suspense and romance but both had too many niggles for me.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever said this about any of Victoria Paige's books, but this one was abysmal.

From the jump, this book dives into the action. Like, around 15% in, it's all about guns blazing and fists flying.

Blair's been on the run from the mob with her bestie/bodyguard Liam. Whiel they're laying low in a cabin when they stumble upon Grant, who's basically frozen solid in the snow. They save his sorry butt and nurse him back to health.
Now, here's where it gets messy. Grant starts trippin' hard for Blair, like, major obsession vibes. He's all up in her face demanding she becomes his girl and moves in with him in Boston. And because Blair's lacking some serious backbone, she goes along with it.
But wait, it gets worse. Homegirl gets caught in a photo while she's out with him and his family, and suddenly the mob's back on her tail. And Grant, being the possessive dude he is, ain't about to let her go, so he's in it too.

I took some notes while reading, here they are:

1- There's a thin line between being clingy and being straight-up gross. Dude Jetted from Manhattan to Boston just to fuck her and stake his claim on her because he was jealous she was sparring with her bodyguard, the same one he assigned to protect her. He also put a tracker in her blood stream without her knowledge so she wouldn't be able to escape him which we somehow have to swoon because he was able to track when she got kidnapped.

2- I am extremely disappointed in this book. Are we normalizing rape and even romanticizing it now? He raped her into marrying him, literally. I already hate Grant for how much of a dick he is but this just takes the cake. These ain't steamy scenes anymore, it's just straight-up assault. Even if her body responded like she was into it, that doesn't excuse him forcing himself on her. It's messed up and creepy. How does she keep letting him treat her like that? Grant's got no clue how to handle his issues, every time she gets pissed at him for screwing up, he just pulls down his pants, forces himself on her, spreads her legs, and goes to town like it's all good.

3- This book should have ended at 65%, the last third of the book is just unecessary. And frankly it's not interesting at all. I had a half mind to DNF this at that point.

4- And how about that weird thing where the author keeps calling Liam "my friend" "her friend" I counted by the way which was 43 times! We get it, Blair and Liam are friends, thanks.

Captive Lies was my first book by this author, and WOW! I can't believe it took me this long to read anything by her! It started out with a bang, and the pace never slowed down for a minute! Blaire Callahan has a dangerous past that keeps her living under the radar, which means she has no life per se, but when she rescues a super sexy man, she feels a strong connection to him that is very hard to resist. Grant Thorne is a wealthy man who comes from a powerful political family, and always gets what he wants. And he wants the angel who rescued him out of a blizzard, despite all of her objections, so he's determined to make her his. That's all of the backstory that I'm willing to give, as this is a romantic suspense, so if I give more, then the plot could become spoiler douchery, and that's something that I highly object to. Grant is a sexy alpha that doesn't know what to do with himself when Blaire won't listen to all the time, and while I loved him, he did makes some douche decisions that deserved a junk punch or two. Blaire was a fantastic heroine that didn't deserve anything that happened to her, and yet, she owned it all anyway. They were flammable together, so sexy times lit the sheets, furniture, walls, etc, up when they ignited. And the cast of secondaries added so much more to the story as well, especially Grant's family, because they were refreshing as they weren't the judgemental douches that so many political families are in books. The twists & turns were off the charts insane to keep my f-bombs raining down throughout, as they never stopped coming, because Victoria Paige's writing style displayed amazing talent in creating a story that had layer upon layer to keep me on the edge of my seat! I cannot wait to read more by this amazing author, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Grant Thorne is the CEO of Thorne Industries and the son of a Senator. He is used to being able to get what he wants and he sets his eyes on the beautiful woman who rescued him in a blizzard and saved his life.

Blaire Callahan is an artist who loves her privacy and is on the run from her past. She has no desire to be anywhere near the public spotlight but being with Grant may disrupt her life more than she knows.

When Blaire disappears Grant will not give up looking for her but soon it is clear that he is not the only one after Blaire and how much will the connection between them endanger those around both of them? Will Blaire sacrifice herself to keep those she loves safe?

This was a great book that had me gripped from the moment it started to the moment it ended. There were many twists and turns that had me wondering whose side everyone was on.

I thought Grant was a great character who was determined to make Blake his yet he really had no clue on what her past was and why people were after her. He vowed to keep her safe but his opponents were so powerful and they would stop at nothing to get her.

I loved Blake and I loved that she was such a strong woman who was used to having to protect herself. I loved the relationship she had with Liam Watts and how he became a father figure to her and knew how to keep her safe and under the radar. Blake was so torn with her relationship with Grant as she knew she cared about him but really did not want him or his family to be a casualty in her issues with the Russians she was hiding from.

The passion between Blake and Grant was awesome and they truly cared so much about each other but wanted the other safe which did create a little friction between them.

I really loved how everything came together and overlapped that made you question certain things. I was so surprised at the end and it made me so happy to see how everything played out as I was shocked.

This was such a great book and this was the first book I have read from this author and I look forward to more!

A romance with a twist.

I picked this up thinking it was a straight up romance but I was pleasantly surprised that it had a bit more depth to it.

You meet Grant Thorne a Billionaire and son of a US Senator. After he watched his sister have a fight with her boyfriend then take off in the snow he followed to bring her back, what he wasn’t expecting was to get knocked off his snowmobile and be badly injured.

You then meet Blaire and Liam two people with a dark past who come across Grant and take him to a log cabin to heal. There is immediate fireworks between Blaire and Grant but due to Blaires past can they have a future?!

Follow through Blaire and Grants romance with some fireworks along the way what with having to deal with an overprotective male but also the Russian Mafia is trying to get to Blaire but why?

There is some action in this book which shows Blaire as a strong woman and she takes not crap from Grant.

Enjoyed this book, I do get a little fed up with the immediate attraction between the lead male and female character but this was well written and kept me gripped what with the action and secrets that you wanted to know throughout the book.

It was well written and I liked that even though Blaire faced heartache and loss through the book she was still fiercely independent and strong.

Loved it! I've volunteered to review this book for United Indie Book Blog. This is my first time reading one of Victoria Paige books. This is about Grant and Blaire. This story it has it all interesting characters, passionate, steamy love scenes, and carefully researched plots that keep you turning the pages. Blaire is an intriguing and talented artist who tries to avoid any kind of personal relationships because she is hiding from her dangerous past. While Grant is the CEO of his own business and the son of a senator. Grant would need to fight for what he wants and he definitive wants Blaire. I liked the push and pull between them and the personal growth each exhibited. Until finally the trust in each other once her secrets inevitably came to light. I recommend this story if you like intelligent suspense with an intense love story. Keep up the awesome work!

Amount of sex 3.5 / 5
How explicit 3 / 5
Story 4 / 5
Overall: 4 / 5

Blaire and Liam were driving when they spotted a man lying in the snow. They discovered he had an accident on his snowmobile and was hurt, but still alive. They brought him to Blaire’s house for help as the snowstorm started to get stronger. Blaire and Liam soon found out that the man is Grant Thorne, the son of a senator, and reported as missing.

Blaire and Grant have a strong connection to each other, but Liam has issues with it. What happens when Grant finds out that Blair is covering up a big secret? Can Grant keep her safe?

Captive Lies is a standalone suspenseful romance from author Victoria Paige. This story was steamy and full of twists and turns. It took me a little bit to get into the novel, but I was soon completely engrossed in the action and drama.

3.5 stars

After having loved many of this authors books, I was excited for this latest release but this one ended up being just ok for me.

The characters were likeable enough and the story was good but the plot started to drag at different times which left me up and down with it.

My thoughts:

POV switches between characters
Quick hook or slow starter? 3 (I was hooked at the beginning, but the story lost me on and off throughout)
Character development: 3
Level of Romance between characters: 3
Passion/Heat level: 3.5
Angst/Heartbreak: 3.5 (lots of secrets and lies)
Cliffhanger?: No, there is the assumption of a HEA in the end.

Overall, a good story but not the best I have read by this author.

Spoiler
Why I hated the MMC. He put a permanent tracking device inside the FMC because he did not want her to be able to leave him. It was in her blood so it could never be removed. Yeah no! I love an alpha but this was not it. Every man that so much as looks at her he creates an embarrassing scene. From the body guard he hired to the waiter. I love a possessive man but this was creepy.

So she is hiding from the Russian mob and half way through the book after multiple kidnap attempts and car explosions, the bad guys are gone. But wait there more (insert late night infomercial) for only the price of another hour of reading you can find the super villain who is out to get the MMC and is going to use the FMC to do it. Enter more kidnappings more special ops team more shoot em ups.

ENGLISH REVIEW

“I should be alarmed that I was falling for him all over again but I wasn’t.
For the first time in weeks, my heart lifted with hope. He gave me hope.”

Even though this book is about romance it also contains a lot of action so it is a very exciting book.

Precisely the synopsis tells us what it is and sells us exactly what you get in the book a possessive, jealous and overprotective hero and a strong and intelligent heroine.

Grant is a millionaire man who ends up in the snow when he hits a tree to go in search of his sister Val, which is a spoiled girl and I only like her until the end (lol). Blaire finds Grant in the snow and she take care of him, she lives in the mountain away from everything because she has secrets that can cost her life, lives with Liam more than his guardian is more like that guy who takes care unconditionally.

When Grant and Blaire know each other they have a very special chemistry between them, which is makes them wanting more of it even if they life styles are complicated, in the same way, they try to take that relationship as best they can with it, moving to Grant's house.
Everything is love and happiness until a posted picture of them uncover the secrets that she kept and her past is against them and against Grant's family.

“… I can live resenting you. I’ll even live with Mom and Dad hating me, but don’t ever ask me to live without you, Blaire.”

About the book

The book has many ups and downs, many quiet moments and many with action, it is quite nice if you like books where heroines do not always need the hero to come and rescue them.

There are many hot scenes that will make you explode your ovaries, if you're like me, whenever is dominant Grant even in bed, is one of the best things that a literary boyfriend can have.

I admit that, I do not know if my hormones were out of control, but there are some scenes in which Grant deserves the middle finger, in which I cried for Blaire, because I do not think anyone should make you feel the way Grant did with Blaire, although he later is an incredible human being who understands that he is wrong and tries to remedy the situation by being an exceptional man.

On the other hand, I have to say that the fact that Blaire is always in danger desperate me, I understand that she is the one with THE secret, but I feel that with only the first conflict that was in history was more than enough, in addition which in my opinion made the bodyguards seem like some tremendous useless ... she would have been better on her own without so much protection.

I give it 3.5-4 out of 5 stars, it's the story if I can visualize it as an action movie full of hot scenes and lots of bullets.

“Losing you, Blaire, will kill him”

RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL

“Debería estar alarmada de que me estaba enamorando de él de nuevo, pero no lo estaba.
Por primera vez en semanas, mi corazón se levantó con esperanza. Él me daba esperanza.”
